Sport is
Daarna is
The managerial responsibilities of the headmaster with regard to sport in schools have been
examined from a juridical educational point-of-view. Firstly sport is
viewed from an inter alia, its
educational perspective in order to show, place and value to the child within the
educational system.
Secondly sport is considered from a managerial perspective in order to consider managerial
responsibilities regarding school sports with special reference to the headmaster as manager of the
shcool.
Thirdly this research contains a discourse of relevant juridical aspects, and their implications
regarding school management vis-a-vis the headmaster.
In consequence, this research has led to guidelines and
recommendations which should enable a headmaster to effect a more efficient system of management
with regard to school sports. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Ed. (Onderwysbestuur)

Sport marketing in the Western Cape with specific reference to the implications for tourismVan Der Heever, Ivan Charles 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 1996. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Sport organisations in the Western Cape are finding it
increasingly difficult to survive. The major problem seem to
be a lack of financial resources, but the financial position
of any sport organisation is the culmination of a number of
factors which directly or indirectly influence the financial
status of these organisations.
It is clear that sport organisations did not develop at the
same pace as other business enterprises, with the result that
they are still managed on an informal basis and, in many
instances, by volunteers. It is therefore easy to realise why
virtually no active marketing of sport organisations is
currently being undertaken. It is absolutely necessary that
sport organisations start applying the principles of the
marketing science if they want to ensure their survival. A
total transformation of the organisation might be required and
the best way to face this possibility, is to undertake a
process of strategic planning.
The sport organisation will then be forced to look at all
aspects of its operations in a scientific manner. Strategies
should be devised in terms of each one of the elements of the
marketing mix for sport organisations, namely the sport
product, price, place, promotion and public relations.
It is also clear that co-operation amongst sport organisations
is vitally important in terms of the development of the sport
industry. In addition, the appointment of professional
marketing personnel will ensure the proper implementation of
the sport organisation's marketing plan.
The key marketing success factors for the marketing of sport
are presented in order to provide sport organisations with
guidelines which could be of assistance in the planning
process. The relevance of these success factors will be
determined in each case by the nature and extent of operations
of the organisation.
The implications of sport marketing for the promotion of
tourism in the Western Cape are also considered. This is done
primarily in the form of major sport events and its influence
on the tourism industry.
This study proposes various recommendations for sport
marketing and sport tourism. The outstanding feature of these
recommendations is the recognition of the need for an
organisation to foster co-operation amongst sport
organisations and also between the sport industry and the
tourism industry.
It is generally recognised that tourism in South Africa has
potential for enormous growth over the next few years, In
this regard, it is important to realise that sport has a
unique role to play in the promotion of tourism in the -Western
Cape. Sport organisations are seemingly not aware of their
current and future contributions to tourism, with the result
that there is a lack of interaction and co-operation between
sport organisations and the tourism industry. This situation
will have to be addressed in order to integrate sport into a
tourism strategy for the region.
In hierdie
toerismebedryf , sal verseker.

A history of koshuisrugby at StellenboschHuys, Isabelle E. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSpor)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club is the largest club in the world and the men’s
residence rugby competition is a component of that Club. The purpose of this study
was to document the origin, formation and activities of men’s residence rugby
(koshuisrugby) at Stellenbosch University.
The history of the University, the history of the Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club and a
little of the history of rugby in South Africa, and particularly at Stellenbosch, are given
as background information in the introduction to provide a global view.
The nucleus of this study concerns the development of koshuisrugby at Stellenbosch
University. An attempt has been made to reconstruct all gathered information as
accurately and as thoroughly as possible.
Although there is much popular writing on sport in South Africa, the supply of scientific
information is minimal. Studies such as these are thus hampered by the unavailability
of primary sports history information. As this study is sport-historically orientated, the
historic-scientific method has been implemented. Preference has been given to primary
sources of information. These sources included minutes, annual reports, reports of
annual meetings and reports of special meetings of the Stellenbosch Rugby Football
Club, as well as interviews with people involved with the club. Personal
correspondence and interviews have also been undertaken with the students and warders
of the various male residences. Secondary sources of information included University
of Stellenbosch publications, books, articles and newspapers.
The introductory section provides a broad outline of the history of rugby in
Stellenbosch; the sports fields of the University and especially the various venues of the
rugby club are dealt with. At first, games were played on the Braak, from where they
were moved to the Vlakte, the Paviljoenveld and later to Coetzenburg.
The second chapter is devoted to the formulation of the problem, defining of the study,
method of research and the evaluation of the resources. The third chapter describes all the male residences playing in the koshuisrugby
competition. Their history, emblems and their results in the koshuisrugby competition
are discussed in detail. Two other teams are also described. However, they are not
resident on the Stellenbosch Campus: the Elsenburg Agricultural College has also been
discussed as they take part in the koshuisrugby competition although they are not part of
the University. Medies (the Medical School) is part of the University and plays rugby
in the koshuisrugby competition, but is not situated on the Stellenbosch Campus.
The fourth chapter deals with the koshuisrugby competition. First, the origins and the
evolution of the five leagues are mapped out. Other competitions such as sevens rugby
and the first years’ tournament are also described.
Since koshuisrugby provided the playing field for experimenting with rules, a section
has been written on rule changes. Referees had to know and apply al those rule
changes, so something about the history and evolution of referees has also been given.
Finally, sponsors are discussed because their participation helped to make koshuisrugby
extremely popular.
histories-wetenskaplike metode daarvoor gevolg.
is.

The prevalence and selected risk factors of musculoskeletal injuries affecting working canines in KwaZulu-NatalRadtke, Storm January 2016 (has links)
Submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master’s Degree in Technology: Chiropractic, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2016. / Background
Dog agility has become one of the most popular canine sport disciplines, growing annually with many owners enrolling their canines without an educated understanding of what the sport of agility entails. Various factors have been identified that can contribute to the injury of the agility dog, these include coming into contact with the agility equipment, the experience of the dog, nutrition, supplementation, handler training in warm up technique and participation in additional sporting activities such as flyball, and risk factors such as breed, sex and age of the dog have been shown to have an impact on the prevalence and type of injury that sporting dogs are at risk for, most commonly, injuries to the shoulder, wrists, hip and an extensive range of soft tissue injuries.
There is a significant knowledge gap in the literature that describes injury prevalence, profiles and the potential risks facing the sporting canine participants in a South African context and that, as more and more owners are seeking out CAM therapies such as chiropractic, literature is needed in order to enable these owners and veterinary chiropractors to better understand the risk that the sport of agility entails. Chiropractic treatment can offer both treatment and prevention, from enhancing the performance of the canine athlete, allowing them to compete more effectively and for a longer period at national and international level, to improving the quality of life of the geriatric canine patient.
Aim
The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and selected risk factors of musculoskeletal conditions affecting working canines registered in the herding breed category in Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Study Design
This study was a cross sectional, prospective survey of sporting canine owners registered with the KZNDAA. The study employed a quantitative descriptive design.
Participants
The study comprised of 70 dogs registered to 38 owners who are affiliated with the KZNDAA.
Methodology
Potential participants were identified on the KZNDAA membership list. These members were approached by the researcher at registered agility shows and invited to participate in the study. Once it has been established that the owners and the canines met the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study, participants were required to sign a letter of information and confidentiality and a consent form and were included as participants in the study. The research questionnaire was then given to participants, who then completed the questionnaire on site and returned it by hand to the researcher. Data was captured on excel and transferred to IBM SPSS version 23. A p value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Descriptive statistics such as mean, standard deviation and range were used to describe continuous variables which were normally distributed, while median and inter-quartile range were used for skew variables. Categorical variables were summarized using frequency tables. Associations between lifetime prevalence and risk factors were tested using Pearson’s chi square tests for categorical risk factors, or Fischer’s Exact tests for continuous variables.
Results
The period prevalence of MS conditions was found to be 8.5% and the lifetime prevalence 45.8%.
Injuries were found to occur most often during play, followed by injury during agility competition, a very small percentage of the injuries incurred were due to direct contact with agility equipment.
Shoulders and hips were the areas most commonly affected, with arthritis and DJD being the most prevalent type of conditions and muscular strains being the most prevalent type of injury. The breed with the highest prevalence of injury was the Border Collie(63%). Neutered males had the highest prevalence of injury (52%), followed by spayed females (30%). The 8-10 year old category had the highest prevalence of injury (30%), followed by the 2-4 year old category (22%). Large breed dogs in the 15-20kg weight category had the highest prevalence of MS injury (40%).
Dogs participating in dog jumping showed a decreased risk of MS injury, while dogs participating in flyball showed an increased risk of developing MS injuries. Handlers with training in specific warm up techniques showed a decreased risk of having dogs developing MS injury.
Reverse casualty associations were found between the increased risk of MS injury and dogs fed on Hills specific diets, dogs supplemented with glucosamine and chondroitin, and dogs currently receiving anti-inflammatories.
Conclusion
The prevalence of musculoskeletal (MS) injuries in agility dogs in KZN is low when compared to studies done outside of South Africa. Factors such as breed, age, sex, and weight of the dog influence the prevalence of MS conditions. Risk factors influencing the development of MS conditions include contact with the equipment, nutrition, participation in other sporting activities and whether warm up periods are allowed. A larger population is needed in order to further analyse the risk of injury in sporting dogs in a South African context. / M

Using the technology adoption model for the modelling of teachers' technology awareness factorsNtshakala, Tholokuhle Thobile January 2016 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Information and Communications Technology, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2016. / Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are omnipresent in the world and that includes the worlds of sport, education and physical education (PE). However, there seems to be a scarcity of PE teachers who are well aware of the benefits of the use of ICTs in PE. The aim of this study is therefore to design a model of the factors affecting the perceived awareness of PE teachers of the benefits of the use of ICTs in PE.
This aim is sub-divided into four research objectives: (a) to select relevant technology adoption theories for the design of a model of the factors affecting the perceived awareness of PE teachers of the benefits of the use of ICTs in PE; (b) to design a conceptual model of the factors affecting the perceived awareness of PE teachers of the benefits of the use of ICTs in PE; (c) to empirically test the above mentioned conceptual model; and, (d) to make appropriate recommendations from the knowledge of the factors affecting the perceived awareness of PE teachers of the benefits of the use of ICTs in PE. Objectives a, b, and d were accomplished through the review of existing literature on the factors affecting the adoption of e-learning by teachers. As for objective c, it was achieved through the survey of 73 teachers from Camperdown schools in the UMgungundlovu District Municipality of the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.
Here is a summary of how these objectives have been met in this study: (a) The Technology Adoption Model (TAM) serves as the theoretical model behind the choice of the research variables of this study; (b) This study hypothesizes that PE teachers’ perceived awareness of the benefits of the use of ICTs is affected by the following variables: demographics, performance expectancy, social influence, and computer attitude; (c) The survey conducted by this study confirms that PE teachers’ perceived awareness of the benefits of the use of ICTs is affected by their performance expectancy, and by three teachers’ demographics (computer usage, gender, and age group); (d) This study calls for more research on the factors affecting teachers’ awareness of the benefits of ICTs, since the study failed to find enough literature on this topic. / M

Management and development of cricket in South Africa with special reference to Natal.Naidoo, Loganadhan Dalyiah January 1983 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the management and development of cricket in South Africa with particular reference to Natal. The objectives of this evaluation included Highlighting the period of cricket prior to unification; Describing the unification process and the conditions necessary for unity; and Evaluation of the development programmes at national and provincial levels. The extensive area of investigation and the vastness of the area of study, restricts this research to specific aspects that are pertinent to the topic. The objectives of the study therefore focus on the following : To provide a theoretical foundation and analysis of administration, organisation and structure, and development, in order to establish whether the current situation did in fact meet with the objectives of the unification process; To investigate the effects of the apartheid policy on sport in South Africa; and To provide a critical appraisal of existing development programmes in order to enhance the knowledge and literature-base of cricket administration in South Africa. Within the framework of this research, and the theoretical foundations of cricket administration and development, the effects of the government's policy of "Apartheid", the emergence of the non-racial sports struggle, the unification process, and the structure of cricket with particular emphasis on the development programmes both at national and provincial levels, are discussed. The conclusion, which draws inferences from each chapter, provides certain recommendations pertaining to the following: The establishment of a National Sports Coordinating Body; The development of a National Development Policy; The establishment of a National Development Fund; The Development of Talented Players; The Development of Officials; The Development of Clubs; The Provision of Facilities; The establishment of School Cricket Unification; and Control and Accountability. It is hoped that the recommendations and suggestions made address some aspects of the various issues raised about the unification process in cricket in South Africa. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Durban-Westville, Durban, 1993.
