Extended Techniques in Stanley Friedman's Solus for Unaccompanied TrumpetMeredith, Scott 05 1900 (has links)
This document examines the technical execution of extended techniques incorporated in the musical structure of Solus, and explores the benefits of introducing the work into the curriculum of a college level trumpet studio. Compositional style, form, technical accessibility, and pedagogical benefits are investigated in each of the four movements. An interview with the composer forms the foundation for the history of the composition as well as the genesis of some of the extended techniques and programmatic ideas.

A Critique of Stanley Fish’s Reader-Response Reading of John Milton’s Paradise LostGibson, Kristopher January 2021 (has links)
The essay critically examines Stanley Fish’s reader-response reading of Paradise Lost.In particular Fish’s main thesis that John Milton’s sole purpose in Paradise Lost is toeducate the reader on their position as fallen. The essay then examines two key claimsthat Fish employs to arrive at his conclusion, namely: (1) Fish’s notion of intendedreadership and authorial intent for Paradise Lost; and (2) Fish’s claims of readerresponse to Paradise Lost in two selected contexts (i) the reader response to Satan in thebeginning of Paradise Lost (ii) the reader response to an aspect of narration in ParadiseLost i.e. the poem’s epic voice. Based on the analysis of these two key claims the essayfinds Fish’s thesis unsubstantiated and in need of further argument.

Homological and combinatorial properties of toric face rings / Homologische und kombinatorische Eigenschaften torischer SeitenringeNguyen, Dang Hop 21 August 2012 (has links)
Toric face rings are a generalization of Stanley-Reisner rings and affine monoid rings. New problems and results are obtained by a systematic study of toric face rings, shedding new lights to the understanding of Stanley-Reisner rings and affine monoid rings. We study algebra retracts of Stanley-Reisner rings, in particular, classify all the $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebra retracts. We consider the Koszul property of toric face rings via Betti numbers and properties of the defining ideal. The last chapter is devoted to local cohomology of seminormal toric face rings and applications to singularities of toric face rings in positive characteristics.

Unique Signed Minimal Wiring Diagrams and the Stanley-Reisner CorrespondenceNewsome-Slade, Vanessa 01 June 2022 (has links) (PDF)
Biological systems are commonly represented using networks consisting of interactions between various elements in the system. Reverse engineering, a method of mathematical modeling, is used to recover how the elements in the biological network are connected. These connections are encoded using wiring diagrams, which are directed graphs that describe how elements in a network affect one another. A signed wiring diagram provides additional information about the interactions between elements relating to activation and inhibition. Due to cost concerns, it is optimal to gain insight into biological networks with as few experiments and data as possible. Minimal wiring diagrams identify the minimal sets of variables for which a model that fits the data exists. Previously established algorithms to compute possible minimal wiring diagrams rely on the primary decomposition of ideals in polynomial rings.
Stanley-Reisner theory provides a one-to-one correspondence between squarefree monomial ideals and abstract simplicial complexes. In this work, we use this correspondence to determine conditions under which a given set of inputs is guaranteed to have a unique signed minimal wiring diagram, regardless of the output assignment.

The Shining - Stanley Kubrick's film adaption of Stephen King's novel / The Shining - Stanley Kubricks filmatisering av Stephen Kings romanAndersson, Denniz January 2024 (has links)
This thesis studies the film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining (US 1977) by Stanley Kubrick (US 1980). The focus of this study lies on Kubrick’s approach towards the settings and the characters. How can we study the role of the auteur in the adaptation process and the differences between source text and film adaptation? How can we understand King’s negative reaction to Kubrick’s ways of altering and differentiate the storytelling? The summary presents a discussion of what adaptations can create and what the process from source text to film looks like. This thesis contributes to adaptation studies and their discussions of media specificity.

Mathematical Analysis Of The Effect Of Biofilm Upon Porosity And Permeability In Oil-Bearing Sandstone Of The Eutaw Formation In Jasper County, MississippiFunderburk, William Keith 02 May 2009 (has links)
SEM and CT X-ray imaging were used to quantify the surface geometries of sandstone pore and throat networks of the oil-bearing Stanley Sandstone of the Eutaw Formation of Jasper County, Mississippi, both in dry samples and in samples that had undergone laboratory simulations of Microbial Permeability Profile Modification (MPPM) oil-recovery technology. The goal of the study was to acquire some quantified understanding of the way induced bacterial activity affected the surface geometries and impacted the porosity and permeability of the oil-bearing Stanley Sandstone. Visible porosity remained high, but significant permeability modification occurred ubiquitously with pore and throat spaces of 10 ìm – 20 μm diameter. Based upon quantitative analysis of photomicrographs, biofilm did not completely fill porosity but did clog pore throats, thus significantly impacting permeability.
