Kocurková, Magda January 2014 (has links)
The author of this thesis examines the style of P. Papinius Statius'poetics in two of his descriptive poems from the Silvae. In the Introduction she puts forth basic data of his life and works. Then she describes Flavian building program and activities of Roman élite in relation with Statius' other descriptive poems. The author consequently puts separately both poems in question, that is Silvae 1.1. and 4.6, in historical and artistic context, then she summarizes existing research on the poems, then she defines genre, style and literary background of each poem and examines their structure. At the end of each chapter the author presents latin text and czech translation, commentary and analysis of typical elements of Statius's poetics in particular sections of the poems according to their structure. In the Conclusion the author summarizes what she has learned about the style of Statius' descriptive poems in relation to the people and objects described.

This thesis proposes a poetic translation project for the first five books of the epic poem Thebais, by the Roman author Publius Papinius Statius (1st century AD), based on the objec- tive of expressing in Portuguese the peculiarities of Statian poetry. For this, the translation was preceded by an analysis of the main characteristics of the text and a by a discussion about the nature and the proper role of the translation, based on contemporary conceptions developed within the framework of the Translation Studies. After the translation, critical and explanatory comments were presented for each of the five books in order to discuss, highlight and clarify more obscure passages, subtle references and issues relevant to the construction of meanings in the poem. / CAPES: 88882.180355/2018-01 (Migrado - SACPAIS)

La memoria di Stazio in Claudiano : Commento intertestuale / La mémoire de Stace chez Claudien : Commentaire intertextuel / The Memory of Statius in Claudian : Intertextual commentary

Pavarani, Cecilia 27 June 2014 (has links)
The paper studies the intertextual dialogue between the work of Statius and that of Claudian, showing the most significant recurrences of Statius’ themes and stylistic features in the latter’s verses. Having ascertained the persistent memory of Statius in Claudian, it verifies the relevance of the allusions reported to date by editors and commentators and it supplements the critical remarks deemed valid with various arguments and in accordance with certain thematic axes of importance in both authors. Following intertextual research criteria and the classification of the parallel passages illustrated in Chapter I, the comparative survey is divided into seven sections dealing with as many themes: power in the mythical universe, power among men, the conception and representation of discord and war, the valorization of culture, the nuptial encomium, the image of the mother. The present contribution, apart from verbal coincidences which, albeit not casual, can be explained as unconscious reminiscences, explores the relation between the two poets in terms of the relevance of their texts to a stylistic-thematic koiné stratified in time, but above all in terms of a direct, creative and deliberate imitatio. Claudian’s texts are therefore presented to the reading enriched with reflections and meanings stemming from the example of his illustrious predecessor.

La Thébaïde de Stace et le sublime / Statius’ Thebaid and the sublime

Lagière, Anne 21 November 2014 (has links)
This work aims at shedding new light on Statius’ Thebaid by having recourse to On the Sublime, which constitutes a contemporary hermeneutic instrument for Neronian and Flavian literature, freed from the projections of modern aesthetic thought. First of all, I try to define the notion of the sublime as it is presented by Longinus. Then I try to analyse the importance of passion in On the Sublime as in the Thebaid and to reveal the links between the two works : the same conception of an audacious poetic creation, the same attraction to outbursts of passion, the same desire to create a shockwave on reception by bringing into play feelings of terror and admiration. The sublime is to be found in the ecstasy of the poet and the characters and in the spectacular portrayal of horror or of disordered nature. On the Sublime is therefore an interesting tool to understand the generic interferences at work in the Thebaid. It highlights the tragic in passion, which is to be found in the theme of tyranny and which gives rise to tension within the epic thus rendering the characters more complex and bringing into question traditional heroism.
