Stora Vika ligger nordväst om Nynäshamn och är ett litet före detta brukssamhälle vid Fållnäsviken. Tidigare präglades området av Cementas fabrik och kalkbrott med ett tätt sammanvävt lokalsamhälle. Eftersom det inte finns någon aktiv arbetsgivare i Stora Vika längre har mycket av det kommunala serviceutbudet försvunnit såsom skolor, tät lokaltrafik och affärer. Detta medför att ingen längre jobbar i Stora Vika och de måste pendla till andra orter för arbete. Efter Cementa lade ner sin verksamhet i orten sjönk invånarantalet kraftigt men har på senare tid börjat öka igen - än väldigt långsamt. Däremot har föreningslivet  fortsatt varit aktivt och båtklubben är en viktig knutpunkt för invånarna. I dag huserar båtklubben i en liten byggnad intill båtupplaget men som inte har kapacitet att fungera som en samlingslokal. Samtidigt råder det en kraftig brist på båtvarv och båtsnickare i Stockholmsregionen, detta då de har fått ge vika åt bostadsexploateringar - eftersom de ligger i attraktiva och sjönära områden. Detta öppnar upp en möjlighet att kapitalisera på Stora Vikas nuvarande sociala värden och tillföra mervärden i form av arbete, lärande samt utöka båtklubbens resurser och yta. Projektet ämnas att skapa ett stort båtsnickeri med tillräckligt med plats för att kunna husera kompetensutvecklande kurser samt yrkesutbildningar för båtsnickeri. Övre plan skall användas som klubbhus åt Stora Vika Båtklubb med extra program för att stärka Stora Vikas attraktionskraft. / Stora Vika is located northwest of Nynäshamn and is a small former industrial community. In the past, the area was characterized by Cementa's factory and limestone quarry with a closely interwoven local community. Since there is no longer an active employer in Stora Vika, many of the municipal services have disappeared, such as schools, frequent local traffic and shops. This means that Stora Vika now are forced commute to other towns for work. After Cementa closed down their operation the population decreased but has recently started to increase again - albeit very slowly. However, the community has remained active and the boat club is an important meeting point for the residents. Today, the boat club is housed in a small building next to the boat yard, but it does not have the capacity to function as a meeting place. At the same time, there is a significant shortage of boatyards and boat builders in the Stockholm region. This provides an opportunity to capitalize on Stora Vikas' current social assets and add value in terms of employment, learning and expanding the resources and space for the boat club. The project aims to create a large boat workshop with enough space to accommodate skill development courses and carpentry education. The upper floor will be used as a clubhouse for the Stora Vika Boat Club with additional programs to strengthen Stora Vika's attractiveness.

Uppgiften var att gestalta en offentlig hybridbyggnad i Nynäshamn kommun. Mitt förslag "Båthuset" ligger i Stora Vika, ett vattennära samhälle tio kilometer nordväst om Nynäshamn. Där bor knappt 750 invånare men både Södertäljebor och Stockholmare är flitiga besökare tack vare områdets unika natur. Idag ser vi en trend där allt fler flyttar från innerstaden till naturnära tätorter. En av de främsta önskemålen vid en sådan flytt är just närhet till vatten och båtliv. Stora Vikas placering längs med Fållnässviken ger alla förutsättningar för att bli en attraktiv båtort. Idag är båtklubben en viktig samhällsaktör som arbetar för att främja gemenskapen i området. Mitt förslag "Båthuset" kombinerar ett hus för folket med båtlivet. Ambitionen är att det ska bli en samlingsplats för såväl lokalinvånare som sommargäster och båtturister. De som inte är de minsta intresserade av båtliv är självklart också välkomna då tanken är att den här byggnaden kan erbjuda en rad olika aktiviteter under ett och samma tak. Byggnadens placering längs med Fållnäsviken, precis i mötet mellan skog och hav, blir symbolisk för samhället Stora Vika som befinner sig i mötet mellan skog och hav. / The task was to design a public  hybrid building in Nynäshamn municipality, Sweden. My architecture proposal “The Boathouse” is located in Stora Vika, a community ten kilometers northwest of Nynäshamn. Stora Vika is a small community of 750 people but is a popular attraction for Stockholmers thanks to the unique nature in the area. Today we can see a trend where people move from the city to smaller towns close to nature. One of the main attractions when moving is the close proximity to water and boatlife. Stora Vika’s placement along the bay Fållnäsviken creates the perfect conditions for an attractive boating town. The current boat club already plays an important role in bringing the community together. My proposal combines a community center with boatlife. The ambition is that "The Boathouse" will become a meeting point for both locals, summer guests and boat tourists. Those who are not at all interested in boats are also welcomed as this building can offer a variety of activities under the same roof. The building's placement alongside the bay, between forest and sea, is representative for the whole community that prides itself in its closeness to both forest and sea.

A home for stragers är en hybridbyggnad i Stora Vika som kombinerar äldreboende med medborgarhus. Projektet utforskar hur en öppen mötesplats skulle kunna skapa liv i en väldigt liten tätort och bli en början till vidareutveckling. Byggnaden står bestämd mitt i Stora Vika, på den stora ängen som är symbolen för samvaro och högtider. På samma sätt ska medborgarhuset bli en förlängning till detta som möjliggör mindre och större samlingar åt de boende året om. Byggnaden ska synliggöra de boende inne i huset och i tätorten till varandra och möjliggöra både aktivt och passivt samvaro i form av vardagliga möten. Huset med lägenheter för 30 pensionärer utgår från en tanke av att gradvist skapa trygga kontakter till personerna i ens omgivning. Att ha möjlighet att mötas i sina vardagliga sysslor eller att dela på en vanlig måltid med en granne ligger i fokus i gestaltningen. Allt börjar med att hälsa på sin granne vid dörren. / A home for strangers is a hybrid building in Stora Vika, in Nynäshamns municipality, that combines a retirement home with a lively community house. The project explores how an open meeting place could create life in a small community and be the start to further development. The building stands firmly in the middle of Stora Vika, on the large meadow which is the symbol of togetherness and celebrations. In the same way, the community house will become an extension to this, enabling smaller and larger gatherings for the residents all year round. The building makes both the people living inside the house as well as in the area, visible to each other. The house with apartments to 30 elderly is based on the idea of gradually creating safe contacts with the people around you. To be felt seen in your everyday-activities or sharing a meal with your neighbor are in focus in the design. Everything begins with greeting your neighbor at the door.

Stora Vika är ett litet samhälle i Nynäshamns kommun som en gång var en aktiv plats med mataffär och bibliotek mm. Idag har flera av dessa funktioner lagts ner men det finns fortfarande ett stort medborgarengagemang på platsen. Detta är något som jag i projektet vill ta vara på och främja genom ett nytt centrum i samhället med co-working, café och andra gemenskapsfrämjande aktiviteter. Här ska det finnas möjlighet att vistas ung som gammal, morgon som kväll. Tanken är att detta ska bli en plats där många trivs och vill vara på men som också underlättar vardagslivet för invånarna med exempelvis en liten livsmedelsbutik. Förhoppningsvis kan denna nya byggnad locka fler människor att flytta till ett litet samhället som Stora Vika.  Huset för folket i Stora Vika är ett nytt tillskott till tätorten men med rötterna i platsens historia och folket. / Stora Vika is a small community in the municipality of Nynäshamn, which once was an active place with a grocery store and a library, among other things. Today, several of these functions have been shut down, but there is still a strong civic engagement in the area. This is something that I want to harness and promote in the project through a new center in the community with co-working spaces, a café, and other community-enhancing activities. This place should be accessible to both young and old, morning and evening. The idea is for it to become a place where many feel comfortable and want to stay at, but also to facilitate everyday life for the residents with, for example, a small grocery store. Hopefully, this new building can attract more people to move to a small community like Stora Vika. The House for the People in Stora Vika is a new addition to the urban area, but with roots in the history and people of the place.

I detta projekt har Stora Vikas befintliga småbåtshamn utvecklats till en samlingsplats för de boende i Stora Vika samt övriga Nynäshamns kommun, samtidigt som platsens nuvarande användningsområde i form av lokaler för båtklubben, båtbryggor samt förvaring av båtar hanterats. I programmet återfinns även bland annat en båtverkstad, resturang samt utrymme för försäljning av matvaror och andra produkter vilka kan tänkas behövas till båtar och verkstaden.  Stora Vika uppfördes i samband med etableringen av Cementas fabrik under 40-talet, men är idag framförallt en pendligsort där många arbetar i Nynäshamn och Stockholm. Den tidigare centrumanläggningen med bland annat konsum, bensinstation och biograf är nedlagd, och orten saknar idag samhällsinrättningar. Det finns, utöver småbåtshamnen, även en idrottsplats, och orten har ett aktivt föreningsliv med engagerade invånare.  Närheten till vattnet är en viktig del av både Stora Vikas och Nynäshamns identitet, och den lilla inbuktningen i viken bildar i kombination med dalsänkan en naturlig mötesplats och är den punkt bostadsområdet organiserats kring. Platsen är dock idag endast tillgänglig för båtklubbens medlemmar, vilket innebär att många invånare stängs ute från området, och grunden i detta projekt är att tillgängliggöra denna plats. Att göra platsen offentlig och förtydliga områdets koppling till vattnet kan även tänkas förstärka kopplingen mellan Stora Vika och Fållnäsviken samt övriga Nynäshamn. / The existing harbor in Stora Vika has in this project been developed into a gathering place for the residents of Stora Vika as well as the rest of Nynäshamn municipality. At the same time, the current use of the site, including premises for the boat club, boat docks and boat storage, has been taking into consideration. The program also includes, among other things, a workshop, a restaurant and space for selling groceries as well as products that may be needed for the boats and the workshop.  Stora Vika was built in the 1940s when the cement factory was established, but is now mainly a commuting town where many people are working in either Stockholm or Nynäshamn. The former center with a grocery store, gas station and cinema has been closed, and the town currently lacks public facilities. In addition to the harbor, there is also in Stora Vika a sports field, and the town has an active community life. The proximity to the water is an important part of both Stora Vika’s and Nynäshamn’s identity, and the small indentation in the bay, combined with the small valley, creates a natural meeting place and is the point the residential area is organized around. However, the site is today only reachable for the members of the boat club which means that many people are excluded from the area, and the foundation of this project has been to make this place more accessible. Making the site public and emphasizing the area’s connection to the water could also strengthen the connection between Stora Vika, Fållnäsviken, and the rest of Nynäshamn.

Från bruksort till BRUKA, med kalkbrottet som gemensam nämnare. Stora Vika har historiskt bestått av en symbiotisk relation mellan ortens tre ”ben”: kalkbrottet, cementindustrin och bostadsområdet. Idag präglas orten av att kopplingen mellan dessa tre element gått förlorad. Visionen med BRUKA är att väcka liv i platsens historiska koppling mellan människa och industri, med kalken som “cementerande” element. Till skillnad från bruk - ett substantiv med fokus på maskin och industri så är BRUKA ett imperativ: en mänsklig handling, en plats för folket att göra till sin. BRUKA förvaltar Stora Vikas arv av att bruka platsens unika råvara, kalken, men istället för den historiska produkten cement är kalken i BRUKA en källa till kunskap för geologiska forskare. BRUKA gjuter nytt liv i Stora Vika bygd i form av arbetstillfällen, aktiviteter samt ekonomiskt tillskott för att stötta upp andra insatser i närområdet och i kommunen i stort. BRUKA visar vikten av att luckra upp gränser och göra bruk av mötet mellan människa och natur. BRUKA sätter återigen ortens ”grande dame”, den unika urkalkstenen, i förgrunden, och låter den bli en generator för arbetstillfällen, kunskapsproduktion, kunskapsdelning och bildning, kreativt skapande och lärande. / From the industrial village to BRUKA, the limestone quarry serves as a common denominator. Stora Vika has always had a symbiotic relationship between its three "legs": the lime quarry, the cement industry, and the residential area. Today, the town is distinguished by the fact that the connection between these three elements has been lost. The aim of BRUKA is to revive the site's historical link between man and industry, using lime as the "cementing" element. Unlike "bruk", the Swedish term for "industry" focused on machinery and production, BRUKA is an imperative: a human action. BRUKA honors Stora Vika's tradition of using the site's unique raw material, limestone, but instead of being turned into concrete, the lime in BRUKA serves as a source of knowledge for geological researchers. BRUKA breathes new life into the Stora Vika village through jobs, events, and financial contributions to other community and governmental projects. BRUKA demonstrates the necessity of bridging boundaries and leveraging the combined power of man and environment. BRUKA brings the local "grande dame," the unique primordial limestone, back into the spotlight and enables it to become a generator of jobs, information production, knowledge exchange and education, creativity and learning.
