Is proposal includes both the criticism towards mass media and capitalist-rooted consumer society , spreading idiosyncratic values. Assuming a antisystemic approach, it also builds own paths of consumerism, both symbolic and material. It is also to be noted, yet, a strong communicational and technological basis of this movement, which complexly articulates local, regional and global flows. Through a multi-methodological emphasis documental research, bibliographic revision, observation with ethnographic approach the thesis aims to spot within the speeches and narratives of the youngsters the acting line and movement impacts in terms of tendencies and/or new approaches towards the upraising interaction among mediatic cultures and consumerist cultures. / Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar ações comunicacionais articuladas às práticas de consumo de um dos mais atuantes e duradouros movimentos juvenis da contemporaneidade, o chamado straigh edge. Sua proposta ativista inclui tanto a crítica da mídia de massa e da sociedade do consumo de base capitalista, quanto, ao mesmo tempo, a construção de uma rede de consumo paralela , difundindo valores idiossincráticos. Assumindo uma postura anti-sistêmica, também constrói trajetórias próprias de consumo, tanto simbólicas quanto materiais. Nota-se, ainda, uma forte base comunicacional e tecnológica neste movimento, que articula com complexidade fluxos locais, regionais e globais. Através de uma ênfase multimetodológica pesquisa documental, revisão bibliográfica, observação com viés etnográfico a dissertação buscará identificar nos discursos e narrativas desses jovens as linhas de atuação e impactos do movimento em termos de tendências e/ou novas abordagens da crescente interação entre culturas midiáticas e culturas do consumo.

Its beginnings derive from the late 1970s and early 1980s in the United States. However, the genealogical analysis of their practices through the centuries, going back to abstainers movements of the United States and England between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and its ballast in the formation of moral, instilling in policy that determine behavior. With the emergence of punk in the 1970s as criticism of moralism, society and the state, the straight edge emerges in this context bringing a punk hygiene and, over the years, has become more violent and reductionist, emancipating itself from protoform and pouring a new ways to build and to solidify. The straight edge approached the environmental movements, looking to list anarchist aspects in their practice, but only reiterated other political forms that are linked more to progressivism that, in fact, to anarchism. In this purpose, several straight edgers who sought anarchism as a way of life, broke with the straight edge to proceed their libertarian path, and kept at the same time, the practical abstainers without the use of the nomenclature that identified previously. In Brazil, similar to what happened in the United States and Europe, the intensification of the straight edge scene brought also the anarchist cells of eruption for the construction of a group of vegan orientation appropriating an anarchist nomenclature for its consolidation among young libertarians causing not only the bedlam among their peers, but catches of anarchism and punk / Straight edge é a palavra utilizada para descrever os sujeitos que, em suas vidas cotidianas, aliam-se ao punk de modo a não utilizarem substâncias consideradas viciantes, como álcool, tabaco e psicoativos. No entanto, a análise genealógica de suas práticas atravessa os séculos, remontando aos movimentos abstêmios dos Estados Unidos e da Inglaterra entre os séculos XIX e XX e seu lastro na formação da moral, infundindo na elaboração de políticas que determinariam condutas. Com o surgimento do punk na década de 1970 como crítica aos moralismos, à sociedade e ao Estado, o straight edge emerge neste contexto trazendo uma higienização do punk e, com o passar dos anos, se tornou mais violento e reducionista, desvinculando-se de sua protoforma e vertendo novos meios para se construir e se solidificar. The authentic punk : an ethnography of DiY music ethics

This thesis examines how select participants came to be involved in DiY punk culture, what they do in it, and how, if they do, they exit from the culture. Underpinning this will be an ethnographic examination of how the ethics of punk informs their views of remaining authentic and what they consider to be a sell out and betrayal of these values. I illustrate how such ethics have evolved and how they inform the daily practice of two chosen DiY punk communities in Leeds and Bradford. I show how these communities reciprocally relate to each other. I ask such questions as what do the participants get out of what is often experienced as hard work and toil, particularly where it is fraught with a series of dilemmas bound up in politics, ethics, identity and integrity. I offer a grounded theory of how and what ways those involved in DiY punk authenticate themselves in their actions. This will demonstrate how and, more importantly, why DiY punks distinguish their ethical version of punk over and above what are taken as less favourable forms of punk. What happens if previous passionately held DiY beliefs are surrendered? Severe consequences follow should a participant sell out. I present an account of these and suggest that what they involve is not the clear-cut question that is sometimes assumed, either sincerely or selfrighteously.

Le straight edge au Québec : abstinence, musique hardcore et résistance

Ce mémoire porte sur la notion de résistance sous-culturelle chez la sous-culture straight edge dans le contexte du Québec et s’intéresse à la place et au rôle de la musique hardcore à travers cette résistance. S’inscrivant dans le domaine de la sociomusicologie, il est le résultat d’une étude de terrain menée à l’aide d’entretiens auprès de participants à la sous-culture straight edge québécoise. Il s’intéresse au développement de la culture straight edge dans le contexte du Québec et à son organisation en marge de l’industrie culturelle mainstream en explorant son lien et son positionnement par rapport à la scène hardcore québécoise. Cette enquête se penche sur la perception de l’identité sous-culturelle ainsi que sur la représentation du système de valeurs straight edge chez les participants à la sous-culture. Il explore également, à travers l’analyse du discours des participants, leur conception de la société mainstream, des structures de pouvoir et de l’idéologie dominante afin de comprendre leur conception de la résistance. Le mémoire s’intéresse ensuite aux caractéristiques esthétiques du genre hardcore straight edge à travers ses paramètres musicaux et la production et l’utilisation de la voix dans le genre. Il est finalement démontré que la musique hardcore soutien et appuie la résistance sous-culturelle straight edge à travers diverses stratégies d’interprétation, compositionnelles et scéniques, soutenues par les paramètres vocaux et musicaux du genre, les textes des chansons ainsi que le contexte du concert live. / This thesis examines the notion of resistance in the straight edge subculture in the context of Quebec, focusing on the place and role of hardcore music through this resistance. It is part of a sociomusicology field study consisting in interviews with participants in the Quebec straight edge subculture. It is interested in the development of straight edge culture in the context of Quebec and its organization on the margins of the mainstream cultural industry. It also explores the relationship of this subculture with the Quebec hardcore scene. This thesis examines the perception of subcultural identity and the representation of the straight edge value system amongst subcultural participants. It also explores, through the analysis of the participants' discourses, their conception of mainstream society, power structures and dominant ideologies in order to understand their conceptions of resistance. The thesis then looks at the aesthetic characteristics of the straight edge hardcore genre through its musical parameters and the production and use of the voice in this genre. Finally, it is shown that hardcore music supports and sustains straight edge subcultural resistance through various performances, compositional and scenic strategies, supported by the vocal and musical parameters of the genre, lyrics, as well as the context of the live concert.

Životní styl subkultury mládeže straight edge / Lifestyle of the Straight Edge Suculture Youths

This thesis handles with the lifestyle of Straight Edge youth subculture. This subculture is identified by refusing alcohol, drugs, tobacco, sexual promiscuity and emphasizing moral compassion. First the thesis describes the lifestyle in general, including the typical attitudes, values and freetime activities. Further it reflects subcultures, their place within society, their specifics, and maps the academic studies of (post)subcultural theories. Following part describes the Straight Edge subculture in detail and is asking the question whether this subculture can fulfill the function of the substition of religion. The qualitative analysis then focuses on the lifestyle of the individual followers, their perception of the community, the relationship with society and selfpresentation. Additionaly the thesis presents the ethical and moral dimension of Straight Edge and delas with the problem of commercialism of subcultures.
