Two dimensional Maximal Supergravity, Consistent Truncations and HolographyOrtiz, Thomas 07 July 2014 (has links) (PDF)
A complete non trivial supersymmetric deformation of the maximal supergravity in two dimensions is achieved by the gauging of a SO(9) group. The resulting theory describes the reduction of type IIA supergravity on an AdS_2 x S^8 background and is of first importance in the Domain-Wall / Quantum Field theory correspondence for the D0-brane case. To prepare the construction of the SO(9) gauged maximal supergravity, we focus on the eleven dimensional supergravity and the maximal supergravity in three dimensions since they give rise to important off-shell inequivalent formulations of the ungauged theory in two dimensions. The embedding tensor formalism is presented, allowing for a general desciption of the gaugings consistent with supersymmetry. The SO(9) supergravity is explicitly constructed and applications are considered. In particular, an embedding of the bosonic sector of the two-dimensional theory into type IIA supergravity is obtained. Hence, the Cartan truncation of the SO(9) supergravity is proved to be consistent. This motivated holographic applications. Therefore, correlation functions for operators in dual Matrix models are derived from the study of gravity side excitations around half BPS backgrounds. These results are fully discussed and outlooks are presented.

The derivation and quasinormal mode spectrum of acoustic anti-de sitter black hole analoguesBabb, James Patrick 08 March 2013 (has links)
Dumb holes (also known as acoustic black holes) are fluid flows which include an "acoustic horizon:" a surface, analogous to a gravitational horizon, beyond which sound may pass but never classically return. Soundwaves in these flows will therefore experience "effective geometries" which are identical to black hole spacetimes up to a conformal factor. By adjusting the parameters of the fluid flow, it is possible to create an effective geometry which is conformal to the Anti-de Sitter black hole spacetime- a geometry which has recieved a great deal of attention in recent years due to its conjectured holographic duality to Conformal Field Theories. While we would not expect an acoustic analogue of the AdS-CFT correspondence to exist, this dumb hole provides a means, at least in principle, of experimentally testing the theoretical properties of the AdS spacetime. In particular, I have calculated the quasinormal mode spectrum of this acoustic geometry. / Graduate / 0986 / 0753 / jpbabb@yahoo.ca

Laços de Wilson supersimétricos na correspondência AdS/CFT / Supersymmetric Wilson loops in the AdS/CFT correspondenceDhyan Victor Hiromitsu Kuraoka 29 May 2013 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to review Wilson loop operators in the contexto f the AdS/CFT correspondence. These operators, wich are present in any gauge theory, are important because they furnish an order parameter for confinement/deconfinement phase transitions. Besides this, they are particularly relevant in the study of the AdS/CFT correspondence because: i) they allow, in some cases, for exact results thanks to localization to matrix models and make it possible to perform highly non-trivial tests of the correspondence; ii) they are the gauge theory objects dual to strings propagating in the bulk of the space and give a rich dictionary between bulk (AdS) and boundary (CFT) quantities. After reviews of Wilson loops in gauge theories and of the Ads/CFT correspondence, we will introduce the definition of 1/2 BPS supersymmetric Wilson loops, we will compute them at weak coupling and then at any order in the coupling constant via matrix model techniques, and finally we will compare our results with minimal surface computations in the bulk, finding perfect agreement.

Two dimensional Maximal Supergravity, Consistent Truncations and Holography / Supergravité maximale bidimensionnelle, troncatures cohérentes et holographieOrtiz, Thomas 07 July 2014 (has links)
A complete non trivial supersymmetric deformation of the maximal supergravity in two dimensions is achieved by the gauging of a SO(9) group. AdS/CFT correspondence and c-extremizationGoranci, Roberto January 2017 (has links)
In this project we review the method of using c-extremization and computing anomalies to obtain AdS/CFT theories. We start with a quick introduction to CFT's and AdS/CFT correspondence which gives us the tools to later understand the 2D N= (2,0) SCFT and its gravity duals in particular AdS_5xS^5 and AdS_7xS^4 compactified on Riemann surfaces.

The Ratio of Reality : A study of the gyromagnetic ratio in theories ranging from classical mechanics to string theoryNilsson, Daniel January 2021 (has links)
In this project a theoretical study of the so called gyromagnetic ratio was done by investigating classical mechanics, Dirac theory and string theory. The gyromagnetic ratio is a constant term appearing in the coupling between angular momentum and magnetic moment for a particle. A universality in quantum field theory claiming g = 2 regardless of spin is known to exist which also agrees with the found values (g = 2) of the Dirac and string theory. The proof of the aforementioned universality in quantum field theory was sketched in the project by showing that the W-boson Lagrangian is well behaved in the massless limit. Furthermore it is shown that the spin equations of motion for a particle is greatly reduced if g = 2 regardless of spin.

Modular Graph Forms and Scattering Amplitudes in String TheoryGerken, Jan Erik 04 September 2020 (has links)
In this thesis, we investigate the low-energy expansion of scattering amplitudes of closed strings at one-loop level (i.e. at genus one) in a ten-dimensional Minkowski background using a special class of functions called modular graph forms. These allow for a systematic evaluation of the low-energy expansion and satisfy many non-trivial algebraic and differential relations. We study these relations in detail, leading to basis decompositions for a large number of modular graph forms which greatly reduce the complexity of the expansions of the integrals appearing in the amplitude. One of the results of this thesis is a Mathematica package which automatizes these simplifications.
We use these techniques to compute the leading low-energy orders of the scattering amplitude of four gluons in the heterotic string at one-loop level.
For tree-level string amplitudes, the single-valued map of multiple zeta values maps open-string amplitudes to closed-string amplitudes. The definition of a suitable one-loop generalization, a so-called elliptic single-valued map, is an active area of research and we show that a certain conjectural definition for this map, which was successfully applied to maximally supersymmetric amplitudes, cannot reproduce all terms in the heterotic string which has half-maximal supersymmetry.
In order to arrive at a more systematic treatment of modular graph forms and at a different perspective on the elliptic single-valued map, we then study a generating function which conjecturally contains the torus integrals of all perturbative closed-string theories. We determine a differential equation satisfied by this generating function and solve it in terms of path-ordered exponentials, leading to iterated integrals of holomorphic Eisenstein series. Since a similar construction is available for the open string, this opens a new perspective on the elliptic single-valued map.
