The pre-Islamic sources in the iconography of Iranian Shiite amulets and talismansVassaf, Hamid-Reza 25 November 2013 (has links)
If we consider the important role of magic in Islam as well as in Muslim countries and possibly considering its important role in the making of the symbolic universe of Islamic art, the artistic study of magical items can be a new way for historians of Islamic art.The studies and comments developed in the framework of this thesis are two-fold: first, to discover the thematic and visual sources of the symbolic universe of Iranian Shiite amulets and talismans. Or in other words, to find a clear and precise answer to the question whether the composing elements of the iconography of Iranian Shiite amulets and talismans are strictly based on Islamic sources and primitive traditions of Arabic Muslim. Otherwise, can we consider other sources for these elements like the myths and the artistic traditions of oldest Mesopotamia and Persia? On the second hand, our goal is to attract the attention of historians of Islamic art on the themes of symbols - and their regional past - shown on Iranian Shiite magic items specifically and more generally on Islamic art. This work is based on a stylistic and artistic study as well as a thematic and comparative study between the textual and visual elements on the 166 Iranian Shiites amulets and talismans - collected from three collections: « Les cachets, bulles et talismans islamiques » from « Département des Monnaies, médailles et antiques de la Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris », from « Collection des objets » from « Musée du Quai Branly » in Paris et from « Collection des objets talismaniques iraniens (ou des objets magiques iraniens) » from « Musée civilisations Europe Méditerranée de Marseille (MuCEM) » – with those in the pre-Islamic art of Mesopotamia and Persia. This work shows that both textual and pictorial components of these objects have a thematic relationship based on a cosmic and mythical pre-Islamic perspective. In addition, our analysis shows that the birth of the decorative and figurative writing could be the result of an ideological and cultural conflict between the Arabic Muslim conquerors and the intellectuals of conquered countries. Our study also shows that the symbolic universe of Iranian Shiites amulets and talismans was formed under the influence of many disagreements between primitive Islam imported by Arabic Muslims and new Muslims of conquered countries. Our analysis is only based on the three collections of French museums and it is essential to enrich it with other items from other museums around the world.

An important problem in the eld of Pattern Recognition is handwriting recognition. The problem of handwritten mathematical expression recognition is a particular case that is being studied since decades. This is considered a challenging problem due to the large number of possible mathematical symbols, the intrinsic variation of handwriting, and the complex 2D arrangement of symbols within expressions. In this work we adopt the problem of recognition of online mathematical symbols in order to perform an empirical study on the behavior of multi-class classiers. We examine basic methods for multi-class classification, specially the one-versus-all and all-versus-all approaches for decomposing multi-class problems into a set of binary classification problems. To decompose the problem into smaller ones, we also propose an approach that uses a decision tree to hierarchically divide the whole dataset into subsets, in such a way that each subset corresponds to a simpler classification problem. These methods are examined using the k-nearest-neighbor and, accompanied by the oneversus-all approach, the support vector machine models as base classiers. For classification, symbols are represented through a set of features known in the literature as HBF49 and which has been proposed recently specially for the problem of recognition of online symbols. Experiments were performed in order to evaluate classier accuracy, the performance of the classiers as the number of classes are increased, training and testing time, and the use of dierent subsets of the whole set of features. This work includes a description of the needed background, details of the pre-processing and feature extraction techniques for symbol representation, and an exposition and discussion of the empirical studies performed. The data additionally collected for the experiments will be made publicly available.

Previous issue date: 2005-10-05 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This thesis aims at understanding the full meaning of expansion of consciousness, using the theory of the unconscious and interdisciplinary educational methodologies. Following Jung s approach to analytical psychology according to whom the unconscious is the great mother of consciousness I have attempted to interpret a number of dreams I had while writing my PhD thesis, endeavoring to uncover the so-called expansion of consciousness. In this essay I intend to synthesize the conscious-unconscious dialectics through the tentative interpretation of the symbols in my dreams. I am looking at the expansion of consciousness as a theme of studies on its own. This is a fundamental topic of studies in teachers education, connected with the expansion of consciousness in the realm of the unknown, or the unconscious. The proposal of consciousness expansion through one dream attempts primarily to reveal some aspects of Hegel s dialectic philosophy, an invaluable reference in educational literature, unfortunately ignored by most educators. Another dream has also contributed to develop my theoretical and methodological options in the realm of consciousness expansion. The analysis of a set of dreams helps to expand the understanding and meaningfulness of this theme of studies, not only in personal terms, but also in teaching practice. This study imbricates an interdisciplinary approach to education, Jung s search for the self, and consciousness expansion.

Awareness, Perception, and Self-Reported Purchasing Behaviors of College Students Regarding Front-of-Package Nutrition Labeling Systems and SymbolsKessler, Audrey L. 01 August 2016 (has links)
Traditional students enroll in post-secondary institutions during emerging adulthood. College enrollment is increasing and adult weight gain occurs most rapidly during the college-age years, with poor food decisions as a potential contributing factor. The present study examined the awareness, perception, and self-reported purchasing behaviors of college students regarding four front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labeling systems and symbols. Students were sent a 24-question web-based survey, with 908 completed surveys that met the research criteria. There were 888 (98.3%) respondents who recognized at least one of the four presented FOP nutrition labels. There were no significant differences between the groups that recognized one to four of the FOP nutrition labels in their stated likelihood to purchase foods with the specified labels. Students’ awareness of four commercial FOP nutrition labeling systems and symbols on product packaging did not have an impact on their food purchasing behaviors.

The focus of this dissertation is on how communication regarding work environment and work related risks can be understood from an organizational communication perspective. Based on a case study of communication about work environment and work related risks in the Swedish forest industry, the present study discusses institutional influences on organizational sense making processes. A central question has been how to understand the organizational field as a cultural and communicative arena where concepts and ideas connected with issues in the field are communicated between different actors.

The empirical data was gathered using different methods. A questionnaire aiming at screening media habits and information gathering strategies of forest machine contractors was used. Based on information from that screening, mass media content was analysed, such as daily newspapers, trade press and advertisements for forest machines. Also, interviews with actors in the field were analysed thematically with respect to how to unveil hidden key symbols and cultural valuations of forest machine work, the work environment and how to handle work related risks in forest work. The key symbols that were identified to organise conceptions about forest work and occupational risks connected with it contained information about different attitudes towards how to handle risks and other problems in the work environment. Two main types of conceptions were identified, technologically oriented conceptions and person oriented conceptions.

The analysis revealed a fragmented picture of forest work. Yet, the picture was more or less common to the organizational field as a whole. Building on institutional theory and theories of sense making, the study results in a deeper understanding of sense making in relation to work environmental issues by applying an organizational dimension to risk communication in an organizational field.

An iterative approach to operators on manifolds with singularitiesAbed, Jamil January 2010 (has links)
We establish elements of a new approach to ellipticity and parametrices within operator algebras on manifolds with higher singularities, only based on some general axiomatic requirements on parameter-dependent operators in suitable scales of spaes. The idea is to model an iterative process with new generations of parameter-dependent operator theories, together with new scales of spaces that satisfy analogous requirements as the original ones, now on a corresponding higher level.
The "full" calculus involves two separate theories, one near the tip of the corner and another one at the conical exit to infinity. However, concerning the conical exit to infinity, we establish here a new concrete calculus of edge-degenerate operators which can be iterated to higher singularities.
