Estudo ergonômico do trabalho dos músicos de uma orquestra sinfônica / Ergonomic study of the work of musicians in a symphony orchestra

Teixeira, Clariana Lia, 1987- 25 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Valmir Antonio Zullian de Azevedo / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Ciências Médicas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-25T07:27:53Z (GMT). The practice of music as a profession demands more than technique, concentration, multisensory processing of information and memory, exceptional flexibility, coordination, handling and dexterity in a specific posture, and most of the times inadequate, for long periods of time. Epidemiological investigation has been evidencing an expressive sickening of musicians, who, in most cases, have to interrupt their careers, making handling pain a constant in their lives. After all, even minor injuries carry the potential to terminate a musical career, which, as aforementioned, demands a very specific set of skills. Ergonomics can contribute to identifying biomechanical, organizational and psychosocial risks that permeate our occupations, as well as to direct the guidelines of health prevention and promotion. The challenge for ergonomics science lies on the fact that it cannot directly intervene in the adaptation of work instruments or the work environment of musicians in a symphonic orchestra. Considering the importance of the musician profession as a research subject for occupational health and the inherent demands of the job, we believe that, just as it occurs to other professions, these factors represent a relatively unknown occupational risk and are aggravators of sickening risks. Evaluation instruments to identify the biomechanical risks were the Strain Index (Moore & Garg, 1995) and the Suzanne Rodgers method revised by Thomas Bernard (2006) to obtain, respectively, the risk level of a musical instrument in developing disorders of the superior distal limb and in other body segments are exposed to Both were applied to everyday situations of the studied population: rehearsals and public performances. All instruments in the studied symphonic orchestra offer some level of biomechanical risk to its instrumentalists during execution, whether on rehearsals or public concerts, pointing us towards the necessity of attention to the musician health (Leaver, Harris and Palmer 2011) / Mestrado / Epidemiologia / Mestra em Saúde Coletiva

Lifelong Music-Making: Exploring Why Community Orchestra Members Continue to Make Music

Potter, Stuart Jacobs January 2024 (has links)
This author conducted a qualitative interview study of community orchestra musicians to better understand why they have sustained their music-making. The first chapter of this dissertation outlines the three research questions along with a rationale and author’s narrative. A problem statement along with a conceptual framework are also included within the first chapter. Three key areas of connected and relevant literature are identified and discussed in the second chapter of this proposal: 1) Socioeconomic Status (SES), parental involvement, efficacy, and attrition in formal school settings: Motivations of students to start learning an instrument and sustain that learning through high school; 2) Characteristics of members of community orchestras; and 3) Studies examining why adults sustain their music-making. The first dimension enables comparisons and contrasts between community orchestra members and school music students. The second and third domains offer a context for both the musicians' individual work and adult music-making in general. The third chapter is a description of the methods, research questions, and timeline of data collection. Data were gathered via a semi-structured interview and a PhotoVoice activity from 10 community orchestra musicians in the New York City area. A description of the pilot study is also included along with the findings. Additionally, the third chapter includes a detailed description of the PhotoVoice method. There were three main findings for each of the three research questions and those findings and the supporting themes/codes are described in chapter 4. The discussion chapter includes extensive thoughts on the implications of the findings. The concluding chapter summarizes the research, lays out plans for future research, and reflects on the study.

Concerto e desconcerto: um estudo antropológico sobre a Osesp na inauguração da Sala São Paulo / Disconcerting concerts: an anthropological study of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (Osesp) during the inauguration of the Sala São Paulo concert hall

Teperman, Ricardo Indig 04 October 2016 (has links)
Since its first concerts in 1953 until the late 1990s, the activities of the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (Osesp) have been characterized by a great deal of volatility, precariously skating on thin ice. The inauguration in 1999 of the Sala São Paulo concert hall, the Osesps headquarters, was the landmark moment in the so-called restructuring of the orchestra, and definitively contributed to the cementing of its permanence and artistic excellence at a level hitherto unseen in Brazil. In the years that followed, the Osesp has had a great impact on the consolidation of the symphonic tradition in Brazil. This thesis seeks to identify the principal conflicts and impasses that have arisen during this process, analysing the behaviour of the parties involved. I propose that the main discursive force during the launch of the Sala São Paulo concert hall stemmed from the dissonance between a project of international standing in the field of classical music and the symbolic burden of the degradation of the Luz district of the city of São Paulo. The announcement that the Osesp would be based in the Sala São Paulo was an urban regeneration strategy but the difficulties of consolidating the orchestras permanence and excellence involved the relative isolation of the orchestra and the undermining of a more democratic project.

Bomfim, Camila Carrascoza. January 2017 (has links)
Abstract: This research builds upon the observation of the shrinking process of the number of professional orchestras subsidized by state bodies in the last years, since 2000. The decline of the civilizational ideals that led to the creation of symphonies in the middle of the XX century and the loss of appreciation of considerable part of the society in cultural practices turned to the elite are the hypotheses raised to justify this scenario of concert music retraction in Brazil and, specifically, in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, a privileged space that concentrates several of the main cultural organizations of the parents. This work's intention is to prove the tendency of retraction of the professional orchestras in São Paulo in the period between 2000 and 2016, analyzing all possible reasons and explanations. This work, based on the picture of active or extinct orchestras in those 16 years and the geographical analysis and socioeconomic statistics, as well as the history of culture in the city of São Paulo, resulted in the confirmation of the hypotheses related to the loss of the social function of these groups and the progressive disbandment by the State of an educational model and civility established in the first half of the twentieth century. / Doutor

The Symphony in America: Maurice Abravanel, and the Utah Symphony Orchestra: The Battle for Classical Music

Smith, Alex D. 01 January 2002 (has links) (PDF)
Between 1947 and 1979 the Utah Symphony Orchestra was transformed from an obscure, part-time, amateur orchestra into one of the major symphony orchestras in America. By 1947 the orchestra, which had begun as a Works Progress Administration organization, was barely hanging on. The symphony struggled to remain financially solvent, performing only a few concerts per year. Thirty-two years later the Utah Symphony Orchestra was one of the most prestigious musical ensembles in the country— receiving rave reviews from critics around the world, touring extensively, and with more than a hundred albums to its credit. The remarkable growth of the Utah Symphony Orchestra during this period is largely attributable to the efforts of one man—Maurice Abravanel. Abravanel's unwaveiing commitment to furthering classical music was responsible for the changes that altered the symphony as an organization. His drive to further cultural education throughout the world, and specifically in the American West provides a remarkable story of dedication and commitment. To place Abravanel's ideologies and organizational successes in the context of American classical music, this thesis examines the history of the symphony, as an institution, in America, before turning to a study of Abravanel's personal efforts and the Utah Symphony Orchestra's consequent growth. This thesis argues that the Utah Symphony Orchestra, specifically while under the direction of Maurice Abravanel, provides an example of positive growth in community education and classical music promotion. The particular programs that Abravanel implemented were generally successful, and ultimately responsible for the symphony's unprecedented growth. Further, by examining the challenges and solutions that Abravanel confronted in his work to build the symphony, it is possible to understand better the ingredients necessary to the development of professional classical music organizations. This study uses Abravanel's work with the Utah Symphony as a model for successful community music programs, with the intent to communicate insight into successful methods for the promotion of classical music. Such an examination provides a new and imminently practical method for the historical study of musical institutions.

Orientador: Stelamaris Rolla Bertoli / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Civil, Arquitetura e Urbanismo / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-23T06:13:27Z (GMT). The construction of multiple use theatres is becoming more common due to the need to accommodate different kinds of performances at the same space. In order to acoustically adequate this space to concert music, the inclusion of an orchestra shell becomes necessary. The main objective of an orchestra shell is to improve the acoustic quality on stage, both for musicians and for the conductor. The goal is to improve balance of the group allowing musicians to hear themselves and the orchestra better. However, the orchestra shell can also improve the acoustic quality for the audience. The objective of this study was to analyze the difference of the acoustic performance perceived at the audience area with the inclusion of a lightweight orchestra shell with diffuse surface in a proscenium theatre. Acoustic measurements were done in five different assembles of the orchestra shell. Measurements were done using the impulse response technique according to ISO3382-1 (2009). Measured parameters were Reverberation Time, Early Decay Time and Clarity index. Results showed that the orchestra shell can in fact modify the acoustic performance at audience area, changing the subjective acoustic perception of the space / Mestrado / Arquitetura e Construção / Mestre em Engenharia Civil

Oropesa Mateos, Carlos 30 November 2023 (has links)
[EN] The audiences of symphony orchestras are the fundamental part that gives meaning and allows the continuity of these cultural entities. This research aims to analyze the audiences interested in the cultural proposals performed by symphony orchestras, as well as the entities themselves with respect to the management and communication developed by their leaders through actions that promote the connection between the entity and the audience. The analysis presented here is approached from three fundamental aspects of study: the characteristics, tastes and preferences of the audiences of symphony orchestras, the personnel responsible for the management of the entities and the initiatives they design in relation to programming and communication. In this way, the aim is to answer the question of whether those responsible for managing symphony orchestras know their audiences and carry out the management of the entity taking this knowledge into account. Although the audiences of symphony orchestras is a very broad concept and can refer to a multitude of possibilities, in this study reference is made only to cultural audiences as the main ones interested in enjoying proposals of different cultural nature and the subscribers of the entities themselves as regular attendees to the proposals programmed each season. The study is concentrated in two large blocks, in the first of which a descriptive analysis of the symphony orchestra, the musical public, the situation of classical music in Spain and cultural communication is carried out. And in the second block an empirical work is carried out that seeks to gather information about the cultural audiences and subscribers of symphony orchestras, the programming of these cultural entities with respect to a musical season, the management teams and personnel that form them, the point of view of experts in cultural audiences and cultural communication and the communication carried out by these organizations. / Oropesa Mateos, C.
