Preparação e desenvolvimento do mecanismo da luminescência persistente de materiais dopados com íons terras raras / Preparation and development of the persistent luminescence mechanism of rare earth doped materials

Lucas Carvalho Veloso Rodrigues 27 July 2012 (has links)
Persistent luminescent materials are usually based on Eu2+ doped aluminates or silicates, though novel materials with different dopants are seeked for. Accordingly, BaAl2O4:Eu2+,R3+ (R: La-Lu) materials were prepared by the combustion method with ignition temperatures between 400 and 600 °C as well as with the solid state reaction at 1500 °C. The more versatile CdSiO3:R3+ systems were prepared only with the solid state reaction at 950 °C. Infrared absorption spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy techniques were used to study the structure and phase purity of the materials. The oxidation states of the rare earths and their environment were investigated with synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES and EXAFS). The persistent luminescence properties of the phosphors were investigated with thermoluminescence (TL), photoluminescence and synchrotron radiation UV-VUV spectroscopy. Based on the TL measurements, the trap structure for BaAl2O4:Eu2+,R3+ (R: Nd and Dy) and CdSiO3:R3+ (R: Pr, Gd and Tb) is ideal for room temperature persistent luminescence. The XANES spectra indicated the presence of both divalent and trivalent europium doped in the BaAl2O4 host, while only trivalent rare earth co-dopants were observed (except CeIV). Eu3+ may be present because of in situ charging of persistent luminescence. In contrast for the CdSiO3:R3+ system, only the trivalent R3+ species were observed, thus excluding the direct R3+→RIV (R: Pr and Tb) oxidation. Only the typical interconfigurational 4f65d1→4f7 transition of Eu2+ ion was observed in the persistent luminescence of BaAl2O4:Eu2+,R3+ materials. On the other hand, for the Pr3+ and Tb3+ doped CdSiO3, only 4fn-4fn transitions were observed with no traces of the defect band emission observed in either the conventional UV excited or persistent luminescence spectra of CdSiO3:Gd3+. The band gap energy for the hosts BaAl2O4 (6.5 eV) and CdSiO3 (5.28 eV) were obtained with the UV-VUV excitation spectroscopy. The R2+/3+ energy levels positions determined with the aid of the O2-(2p)→Eu3+ ligand to metal charge transfer transition (LMCT) confirmed the role of electrons as the charge carriers in the mechanism of Eu2+, Pr3+ and Tb3+ persistent luminescence. Finally, the persistent luminescence mechanisms were constructed and, despite the differences, the mechanisms for Eu2+, Tb3+ and Pr3+ proved to be rather similar. This similarity confirms the solidity of the interpretation of experimental data for the Eu2+ doped persistent luminescence materials and encourages the expansion of similar models for other persistent luminescence materials in the future. Theoretical calculations by e.g. DFT method can be used to refine the model, to decrease experimental work and to find different models for systems where the present model evidently fails, e.g. Eu3+ doped materials.

Abstract: Metallic Nanoparticles (NP's), ultra-thin films and nano-structured systems have motivated several theoretical and experimental works because of their new electronic optical and magnetic properties of these materials. In NP's, such properties are directly related to the size and surface effects, which affect its electronic and crystallographic structures, by concentrating a larger number of atoms on the surface in relation to their volume. Recent studies have suggested that some noble metals without any kind of spontaneous ferromagnetic order can exhibit it, even at room temperature, when segmented as nanoparticles. Examples of these metals are Au and Pd. Despite the efforts to prove the existence of a ferromagnetic behavior in such materials, there are no measurements that demonstrate unambiguously the ferromagnetic polarization in Pd atoms, for example. Most of the works shown in the literature have used SQUID measurements to characterize the ferromagnetism in these materials. It is therefore necessary to verify the existence of ferromagnetism in these materials by using element specific techniques, such as XMCD (X-ray magnetic circular dichroism). XMCD is a very important technique, which is element selective and performs quantitative determination of the spin and orbital magnetic contributions for each element separately. Our work has a particular difference when compared to others in literature because instead of studying each element individually we have worked with NP's of the bimetallic compound Aux Pd1-x (x = 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75) capped by thiol. SQUID measurements clearly showed ferromagnetic behavior in these nanoparticles, even at room temperature. In this thesis we will present results of a systematic characterization of these nanoparticles by a multi-technique approach which involves measurements with SQUID, XANES, XPS and XMCD in the L2,3 edges of the Pd and Au L3 edge. We also emphasize the development of a new instrumentation for XMCD measurements at UHV where samples can be submitted to high magnetic fields and conditions of low temperatures. Based on these findings we discuss the possibility of ferromagnetism in these nanoparticles and its origin.

The great waste generation due to the accelerated population growth, urbanization and industrial developments and changes in consumer habits behind as a result many impacts to the environment and people's health if not properly managed and designed. Among the many forms of waste disposal, landfills today are best suited to Brazilian conditions, this because their construction allows minimizing the negative effects of landfill gas and slurry produced. However, the confinement of pollutants from landfills is linked to its construction and operation and when the construction and/or is wrong they can endanger air, groundwater and surface waters qualities. Thus, the main objective of this study was to analyze the concentration of heavy metals in samples of groundwater, surface water and slurry coming from solid waste disposal locations in the city of Campinas, SP - Delta, Santa Barbara and Pirelli Landfills. The samples were analyzed at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory using Synchrotron Radiation Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence technique (SR-TXRF), which is a multi-element and non-destructive methodology. To quantify the total concentration of metal the surface water samples were submitted to an extraction acid procedure based on EPA 200.8 method and for the determination of dissolved contents of metals the samples were only filtered. The same procedure was applied to slurry for the determination of total concentrations, however, to quantify the dissolved contents the extraction procedure used was EPA 3050B method. In Pirelli Landfill, the highest concentrations were observed in one of the wells located to downstream of the Landfill (in relation to the groundwater flux) - the monitoring well PM04, exceeding the intervention value defined by CETESB. For Santa Barbara landfill in one upstream monitoring well the concentrations of Ni, Mn, Pb and Cr, surpassed the maximum permissive values. The manganese in Landfill Delta showed to be higher in wells located downstream and 50% of the wells analyzed exceeded the maximum permissive value for groundwater samples. In the case of surface waters located in the vicinity of landfill sites, the metals that surpassed the maximum permissive values according the legislation in most of the points analyzed were Mn, Cu and Pb. For slurry samples collected in Delta Landfill, the average concentrations for Mn, Ni, Cu and Pb not exceeded the maximum permissive values during the period studied. Moreover for Santa Barbara the average concentration of Mn, Cu and Zn surpassed the permissive limits, as was observed for Mn in the Pirelli Landfill / Doutorado / Saneamento e Ambiente / Doutora em Engenharia Civil

Determination of the stress field in polycrystalline materials by Laue microdiffraction / Détermination du champ de contraintes dans les matériaux cristallins par microdiffraction Laue

Zhang, Fengguo 07 July 2015 (has links)
Laue microdiffraction is a powerful technique to characterize the intragranular elastic strain field at the scale of micrometer. Although a standard procedure extracting elastic strain and crystal orientation from Laue image has been well-established, it can suffer from two sources of uncertainties: the determination of peaks' positions and the sensitivity to calibration parameters. In light of the high accuracy of digital image correlation (DIC), we developed the so-called Laue-DIC method which used the peaks' displacements measured by DIC instead of peaks' positions to determine the elastic strain increment and rotation between two mechanical configurations. This method has been proved more efficient than the standard procedure in terms of stress profiles of bended beam. We also developed the enhanced version of Laue-DIC. By using the term “enhanced”, we mean that we attempt to obtain both lattice matrices and calibration parameters of two configurations rather than solely the elastic strain increment and rotation from peaks' displacements.Aside from the formulation of Laue-DIC, we also developed a procedure of statistically estimating the errors of elastic strain/stress resulted from DIC errors and calibration accuracy. We have first validated a classical noise model, Poissonian-Gaussian model, from diffraction images acquired at synchrotron radiation facility. With the noise model, we could statistically estimate the DIC errors by synthesizing artificial spots. The estimated DIC errors were further transmitted into the errors of Laue-DIC through statistical tests.

Full-field measurements of elastic and total strains for the determination of the local behaviour in polycrystals

Plancher, Emeric 10 December 2015 (has links)
The prediction of damage occurring in metallic materials is dependent on the knowledge of the mechanical behavior at a micron scale. Crystal plasticity laws are often used to describe the behavior of a single grain in polycrystals. Such laws include many parameters which should be tuned according to the metallurgical and mechanical state of the material. An original way to identify theses parameters is presented in this work. The local constitutive behavior is measured at the local scale. It is used to adjust the parameters’ value on a single point calculation without the need for a finite element mesh. To observe the local behavior two types of full filed measurements are carried out: (i) stress measurements using diffraction-based Laue microdiffraction and high angular resolution EBSD – HR-EBSD – and (ii) strain measurements by digital image correlation. To ensure trustworthy results, the accuracy of Laue microdiffraction (Laue-DIC) and HR-EBSD measurements are determined for the first time in a plastically deformed material. Then, stress and strain fields are monitored at the surface of a single crystal bent in-situ in the low deformation regime (0.5%). The local behavior is determined and used to identify two parameters of a crystal plasticity law, in a 316L stainless steel single crystal.

Characterization of tissue properties on the sub-micron scale in human bone by means of Synchrotron Radiation CT / Caractérisation des propriétés des tissus à l'échelle sub-micronique dans l'os humain au moyen de rayonnement synchrotron CT

Hesse, Bernhard 24 March 2014 (has links)
Under healthy conditions, human bone undergoes permanent remodeling to adjust to mechanical demands, to repair micro-cracks and to maintain mineral homeostasis. This process of remodeling is performed by osteoblasts and osteoclasts: bone-forming and bone-resorbing cells. The activity of osteoclasts and osteoblasts is triggered by osteocytes, the most frequently occurring type of bone cell, via mechanosensation processes. Bisphosphonates (BP) prescribed during treatment for osteoporosis or bone metastasis inhibit osteoclast activity and thus decrease the bone turnover. In this work, the distribution and morphology of osteocyte lacunae of human cortical jaw bone was investigated in 3D, and a comparison between healthy and BP-treated donors was performed using synchrotron radiation (SR) µCT. In a second approach, we used SR nano-CT with phase contrast to investigate the morphology of the canalicular network and the bone tissue properties in the vicinity of the lacuna-canalicular network of human jaw bone, originating from both healthy subjects and patients treated with BPs. We hypothesized that secondary mineralization takes place via a diffusion process through the fluid-matrix interface at both the lacunar and the canalicular surfaces. This should result in mass density gradients with respect to the distance to the pore boundary. Such mass density gradients were indeed observed at both lacunar and canalicular interfaces. We concluded that mineral exchange between extracellular fluid and mineralized matrix occurs at all bone surfaces, including the canaliculi. Our data suggested that the capacity of the pore network to exchange mineral with the bone matrix would increase by one order of magnitude if the canalicular surface is taken into account. However, more studies should be performed, targeting not only the changes of tissue properties during secondary mineralization, but also during fluctuations of mineral concentration in periods of high mineral demand.

Caractérisation des interactions physico-chimiques entre le cuivre et les racines comme base de développement d'un modèle d'évaluation de la phytodisponibilité des éléments traces / Characterization of physico-chemical interactions between copper and roots as a basis for the development of a model predicting the phytoavailability of trace elements

Guigues, Stéphanie 10 March 2015 (has links)
This study has been dedicated to the development of a new modeling approach of trace element phytoavailability, focusing on binding reactions between trace element and plant roots. This approach was used to predict copper (Cu) adsorption on wheat and tomato roots. Several analytical techniques (acid-base titrations, nuclear magnetic resonance of carbon 13, X-ray absorption spectroscopy) were used and crossed with modeling results. At first, plant root reactivity was characterized. Because plant roots are consist of cell walls and plasma membranes, the relative contribution of these two compartments in root binding properties was evaluated. The study was then focused on Cu binding reactions on roots and the effects of physico-chemical conditions (pH, ionic strength, presence of cations) on copper binding. The model has been set thanks to results on root characterization obtained and the acquisition of a set of experimental data on Cu binding. It has been shown that binding properties of wheat and tomato roots came from both cell walls and plasma membranes. Copper speciation in roots was shared, almost evenly, between cell wall pectic compounds and proteins embedded in cell walls and plasma membranes. A model, specific to plant roots, has been developed on the basis of a current model dedicated to the humic substances reactivity. The WHAM-Terrestrial Higher Plants model presented in this study is a first step towards a new tool for assessing the availability of trace elements for plants.

The rapid urban and industrial growth in recent decades caused changes in the environment, including pollution of water bodies, mainly of metals that can cause harm to human health. The cities of Campinas and Jaguariuna are inserted in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (MRC), one of the most dynamic regions in the Brazilian economy. Therefore, to study the influence of anthropogenic citiesit was evaluated the quality of raw and treated wastewater and sludge generated in the wastewater treatment plant of Anhumas, in Campinas and the treatment plant in the municipality of Camanducaia Jaguariuna, both in state of Sao Paulo, particularly with regard to metal contamination. Analyses were performed by the technique of X-ray Fluorescence by Total Reflection with Synchrotron Radiation (SR-TXRF) and the results compared with existing laws. For the treated effluent data were compared laws CONAMA 357 and 430 that set limits for the discharge of effluents into water bodies and all the elements Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb and Ba concentrations presented in accordance with legislation. To reuse in agriculture, whose limits are defined by the Technical Instruction CETESB some elements had concentrations above the permitted and thus the treated effluent can't be used for reuse. In the case of sludge contents of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ba and Pb were compared with maximum permissible values of the laws CONAMA 357 and 430 and the contents of all elements were below the maximum allowable value, and thus it is possible application of sludge to agricultural soil, for the two sewage treatment stations studied, Anhumas (Campinas) and Camanducaia (Jaguariuna) / Doutorado / Saneamento e Ambiente / Doutora em Engenharia Civil

Collective effects in a transient microbunching regime and ion cloud mitigation in ThomX / Effets collectifs dans un régime de micro-paquet transitoire et atténuation du nuage d'ion dans ThomX

Gamelin, Alexis 12 September 2018 (has links)
The thesis is focused on the study of collective effects in a 50 MeV electron storage ring, ThomX, in the absence of synchrotron radiation damping and of longitudinal matching. This thesis is divided in two distinct parts. The first part corresponds to the design of the impedance model (geometric and resistive wakefields, coherent synchrotron radiation) of the storage ring in order to simulate the beam dynamics. The geometric impedance model of the storage ring was obtained via simulation of the individual elements and was checked using wire measurements on prototypes. The coherent synchrotron radiation was simulated taking into account a rectangular vacuum chamber. Beam dynamics simulations, from the RF gun cathode to the storage ring, including collective effects are presented. The simulations are used to optimise the beam dynamics in the storage ring in the micro-bunching regime. The second part is the study of the ion cloud produced by the ionisation of the residual vacuum molecules and the optimisation of the ion clearing techniques. The longitudinal ion accumulation points and the trapping in magnetic fields are both studied analytically and by using a tracking code developed for this purpose. Clearing electrodes and clearing gaps are simulated and optimised using this code and the strategy chosen for the limitation of ion induced effects is described. Finally, the effect of multi-ionisation and ion dissociation is taken into account and the ion effect on the electron beam is estimated.

In Situ Ptychography of Heterogeneous Catalysts using Hard X-Rays: High Resolution Imaging at Ambient Pressure and Elevated Temperature

Baier, Sina, Damsgaard, Christian D., Scholz, Maria, Benzi, Federico, Rochet, Amélie, Hoppe, Robert, Scherer, Torsten, Shi, Junjie, Wittstock, Arne, Weinhausen, Britta, Wagner, Jakob B., Schroer, Christian G., Grunwaldt, Jan-Dierk 03 June 2020 (has links)
A new closed cell is presented for in situ X-ray ptychography which allows studies under gas flow and at elevated temperature. In order to gain complementary information by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, the cell makes use of a Protochips E-chipTM which contains a small, thin electron transparent window and allows heating. Two gold-based systems, 50 nm gold particles and nanoporous gold as a relevant catalyst sample, were used for studying the feasibility of the cell. Measurements showing a resolution around 40 nm have been achieved under a flow of synthetic air and during heating up to temperatures of 933 K. An elevated temperature exhibited little influence on image quality and resolution. With this study, the potential of in situ hard X-ray ptychography for investigating annealing processes of real catalyst samples is demonstrated. Furthermore, the possibility to use the same sample holder for ex situ electron microscopy before and after the in situ study underlines the unique possibilities available with this combination of electron microscopy and X-ray microscopy on the same sample.
