The effect of mass retail buying practises on competitiveness in the retail value chain

Bowen, Craig Andrew 16 February 2013 (has links)
Historically, South African manufacturers and suppliers to the mass retail environment have been compelled to manage significant business risks as a result of the generic buying strategies employed by the mass retailing format. More recently, best practice initiatives such as SCOR’s collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment have risen to the fore of supply chain management as ways to mitigate the undesired effects of theses generic buying practices for all participants in the value chain.Traditional thinking centred on optimising only the merchandise activities and function, through cost based performance measures, have caused a number of undesired effects and invalid assumptions. These factors in turn have impacted the competitiveness and sustainability of manufacturers and suppliers as well as the supply chain ecosystem as a whole. Systemic theory suggests that in order to identify these conflicting and invalid assumptions one must approach the problem through sufficiency based thinking processes that communicate the core conflict and map out possible solutions for managers. Data for this study was collected based on the widely accepted best practice framework of supply chain management for the mass retail environment. With this in mind, this research aims to provide an academic foundation for deeper collaboration between mass retailers and their vendors, as well as an understanding of the practical implications of decisions for managers and executives, on both the mass retail, and manufacturing and supply sides of the value chain. While statistical variation is a reality in the retailing environment, the mass retailing format and its supply chain partners are particularly susceptible to the negative effects of ‘bullwhip’ due to the large scale of promotional activities undertaken. Much of this problem can be mitigated through collaboration on a meaningful bases that allows not only for responsiveness for supply chain partners but greater profitability for all participant in the value chain. It is argued that an improvement in throughput will have a positive impact on the competitiveness and sustainability of the local supply and manufacturing organisations in South Africa. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / unrestricted

SYSTEMIC THINKING IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP: TO WHAT EXTENT DO EDUCATIONAL LEADERS DEMONSTRATE SYSTEMIC THINKING AND TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP BEHAVIORS?

Patterson-Davis, Lauren Michelle January 2020 (has links)
Leadership is contextual and requires educational leaders in public schools to both comply with sweeping political changes and be the catalyst for consistent positive improvements in service to children. The hypothesis of this study is that educational leaders who are demonstrating transformational leadership behaviors are utilizing systemic thinking to make decisions. Scholars who have examined systemic thinking approach argue that it is an engine for dramatic improvements in both organizational function and consistent, productive growth. This study seeks to answer the question: To what extent do educational leaders demonstrate systemic thinking and transformational leadership behaviors? Using observations and interviews, this qualitative study will examine educational leaders understanding of systemic thinking as a approach, their decision-making process, and the relationship between systemic thinking and transformational leadership behaviors. This study will explore potential connections between systemic thinking and transformational leadership behaviors. Implications for practice may include professional development and training in systemic thinking as it relates to a school leader’s intense decision-making process, as well to what extent that this study shows a positive relationship between systemic thinking pursuant to transformational leadership behaviors. / Educational Leadership

A falência do atual modelo de educação superior em tecnologia da informação (TI) / Ruin of the current model of higher education in information technology (IT)

Goulart, Alessandro Rodrigues 09 May 2019 (has links)
However, despite its importance, the education model has been practically the same for almost 200 years. In this time almost everything that is known has already been reinvented; and this becomes more evident with the technological changes in the age of digitization and industry 4.0. However, it is still necessary to broaden the question of how education has been practiced in recent years and how it will be going forward. This work focuses on higher education; and, more specifically, technology education. The perception that Education today does not meet market needs, that stakeholders dissatisfaction appears as an indicator that something needs to change and that it is necessary to first understand what the challenges and future trends are. In a country lacking in investments like Brazil, one cannot go wrong in proposing higher education models that do not achieve effective results. Given emerging country conditions and social vulnerabilities, education becomes a key premise for the promotion of sustainable development. In this sense, this work sought to analyze the perceptions of different stakeholders about the reality of Higher Education in Information Technology (IT) in Brazil. Through the systemic approach, the qualitative study based on stakeholders interviews, used the Soft System Methodology (SSM) to understand the current situation and propose actions that make changes possible. As a result, a framework was developed with alternatives that lead the way to a higher education in technology aligned with the needs and demands of society, especially in the era of digitalization and its respective technological changes. stakeholders IT companies, HEI managers, IT business associations, students and teachers were heard. For the most part, they pointed out to the misalignment of higher education and the demands of the market, teaching with lagged techniques and fragmented content, unrealistic expectation of the students regarding the labor market in IT and lack of emotional support and employability of the school to the student. Solutions pointed towards the partnership with the private initiative for co-creation as well as a program for the development of human resources in the HEI, considering teachers as potential human capital and not as hourly workforce in the classroom

The present work, linked to the line of research "Formative processes, teaching and learning", discusses the importance of a systemic approach in the teaching and learning process of the Nature Sciences in view of the fragmentation of knowledge promoted by the Cartesian reductionist method that still influences the school education and impairs the formation of a scientific-researcher spirit in students. It was observed that the discussion of the importance of a systemic approach in the study of living beings is already present in official documents such as the National Curricular Parameters and Curricular Guidelines, indicating that the teaching of this discipline should provide conditions for the student to understand life as manifestation of organized and integrated systems. This work sought to examine the effective incorporation of these guidelines in the Curricular Framework of the State Educational Network of South Mato Grosso, taking as reference content the study of the human body in the eighth year of elementary school and concurrently six textbooks of Science of this series, approved in PNLD/2014, considering that these are still the main resources used by the teacher in the classroom. Through a predominantly qualitative documentary analysis, the research focused on checking in the materials, according to questions of interest, conceptions that could or could not contribute to the construction of a fragmented vision of the human body by the students and possible advances in a systemic approach in them. For this, four emerging categories of analysis were created, based on the assumptions of the systemic paradigm applied in the study of living beings and in the school curriculum described in the theoretical basis of the research. The study evidenced a strong contradiction between the pedagogical guidelines for the teaching of natural sciences present in the Referential and its own curricular organization, which contributes in the construction of a fragmented vision of the human body by the students, transferring to the teachers the task to promote the articulation and integration between these knowledges. As for the textbooks that could help in this task, it was clear that, although they present some fragmentary conceptual standardization in the approach of the human body, they present, on the other hand, a heterogeneity in the way in which they use other internal resources to contemplate the contents, as texts of support, activities, experiences and images. In several of these resources and methodologies proposed, it was possible to perceive advances that could help in the construction of a more systemic vision and in keeping with the naturalness of the human body by the students, which, on the other hand, reminds us once again of the importance of good training and worthy working conditions of the teacher, who needs to be prepared and have time to select the works in search of these good alternatives of support for their classes.

Identification of the critical success factors for public-funded R&D projects in South Africa

Mkhize, Bahle 15 May 2019 (has links)
South Africa (SA) is classified as a middle-income emerging market, with the most resource-rich economy in Sub-Saharan Africa (SAccess, 2012). Its Research and Development (R&D) journey is characterised by a history of imbalances and oppression. Since the introduction of SA’s National R&D Strategy, recorded government R&D spending has been on the rise. However, the success rate for public-funded R&D projects has neither been satisfactory nor readily exposed for all to see. Factors considered critical for project success are largely contextual and tend to differ per project and industry. There appears to be no general consensus among scholars and authors on the common factors deemed critical in influencing the success of public-funded R&D projects. In SA, such factors still remain a mystery for further exploration. This research study sought to develop a model that will assist in achieving two key objectives, namely to identify the Critical Success Factors (CSF) of public-funded R&D projects in SA, as well as to exhume possible interrelationships between the identified critical success factors. This paper argues for a systemic and structure-based holistic approach and adopts Warfield’s Interactive Management (IM) in its endeavour to identify those factors that are deemed critical in the successful implementation of public-funded R&D projects in SA. The methodology comprises three key phases: a planning phase; a workshop phase; as well as a follow-up phase. The planning phase is a foundational phase that lays the basis and a plan for the ensuing two phases. The workshop, also known as the conversation phase, could be conceptualised as a process for building patterned interactions among the participants. It is in this phase that a relationship model, in the form of a diagraph, is constructed. The follow-up phase is the last phase and involves the implementation of the results to prove validity of solutions proposed in the workshop phase. However, since this last phase falls outside the scope of this paper, it has been excluded. Through the application of the IM methodology, a total of 35 identified CSFs were reduced to 23 key to formulate the CSF relationship model using the Interpretive Structural Model (ISM). Based on the model results, the study is concluded by identifying “Product market viability” and “Executive management support” as the two primary success factors that are most significant and have the greatest leverage to influence other factors towards the successful completion of public-funded R&D projects in SA.

A systemic exploration of information systems project risks in the South African public sector

Chiloane, Poelo Leo 18 January 2022 (has links)
Purpose: This study aims to investigate Information Systems (IS) project risks in the South African public sector, and to develop a systemic model of the most dominant risks encountered and identify the interrelationships that exist between these risks. Design and methodology: The study is conducted through the application of Interactive Management (IM) to identify IS project risks and structure the interrelationships between them. The IM methodology comprises of four key phases: Idea Generation, Idea Clarification, Idea Structuring, and Interpretation. A workshop with a group of participants is required to carry out an IM intervention successfully. During the Idea Generation phase, participants are asked a triggering question to elicit ideas, which are then clarified and structured in the subsequent phases of IM before final interpretation. Findings: In the Idea Generation phase, six IM participants working on public sector IS projects were asked a triggering question to elicit dominant IS project risks they perceive to be important. The participants initially identified 34 IS project risks, which were reduced to 24 after they brainstormed their relevance during the Idea Clarification phase. Further deliberations led to the participants removing another risk during the Idea Structuring phase. During the Idea Structuring phase, the remaining 23 risks were structured to produce an Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) digraph with the aid of software. The ISM digraph revealed three risk factors as the primary drivers of IS project risks in the public sector, specifically, in the context of this study. These risks are ‘lack of consultation with users', ‘budget cuts' and ‘excessive red tape'. Value of study: This research contributes to the following: (1) the existing knowledge-base on public sector IS project risk management; (2) the focus on a soft systemic approach such as IM helps in uncovering context-specific issues on IS project risks that may not be available in extant literature; and (3) the collaborative learning process of the IM approach adds to research on the sustainability of complex IS projects implemented in the public sector.

In countries like Germany, Japan, the United States and China, the photovoltaic power generation occupies a prominent place among their main electric energy generating source. In Brazil, the photovoltaic power generation is being timidly introduced. However, it does not stand out as an electric power source in its energetic matrix. There are evidences that its development inertia is related to economic, regulatory, institutional and market barriers. In an attempt to find the factors that prevent its dissemination in the State of Tocantins, this research seeks to engender knowledge about the main hindrances to the use of that source, through a case study, with the application of the systemic thinking method. It aims to meet the increasing demand of electric power and making it possible a popularization of the renewable sources. In the first phase, a better understanding of the studied topic was carried out. Thereupon, some interviews with specialists were performed. They provided the comprehension of the current situation of the photovoltaic systems diffusion in the state, thus confirming the existence of obstacles and creating a basis for the preparation of systemic mini structures that, subsequently, were consolidated into a single structure, presenting the data encountered. The obtained results demonstrated the problems confronted by the distributed photovoltaic generation in the state, reaffirming the existence of economic, institutional and market barriers among others, what obstruct the spreading of that source. Actions to eliminate or minimize those obstacles were proposed.
