Cloning in the news : an analysis of how the science and ethics of cloning are reported in three daily newspapers of Cape Town

Van der Linden, Cornelis Albert 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil) -- Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Background: Cloning is a topic that has long fascinated people. It has imbedded itself into popular culture, but studies show that the general public has, at best, only a vague understanding of what cloning entails. Alternatively, their perception has been skewed by that very same popular culture. However, cloning is a complex scientific subject that has considerable ethical implications. It is the kind of topic that people in a deliberate democracy should know about. The media play an important role in the education of the public with regards to science and technology. However, the media have the potential to do more than provide the basic facts. In fact, the media can play an important role in influencing the actions and opinions of the public. It is therefore a responsibility of the media to provide accurate information on scientific developments, such as cloning. Objective: An analysis of three daily newspapers in the Western Cape was carried out to determine how cloning is reported. The broad topics addressed were whether the coverage focused on the ethical or scientific aspects of cloning, if the subject was reported in a positive or negative tone, and whether the science of cloning was adequately explained. Methodology: A quantitative content analysis was completed of a sample of 69 articles. These articles were all those relating to cloning that appeared in three daily newspapers (Cape Argus, Cape Times and Die Burger) over a period of one year from 10 November 2002 to 10 November 2003. Findings: Of all the articles analysed 34% focused on the scientific aspects, 21% focused on the ethical aspects, 6% focused on both ethics and science, while 39% focused on neither. Fifty two percent of articles dealing specifically with animal cloning focused on the science, while only 4% focused on the ethics. However, in articles dealing specifically with human cloning, more (30%) emphasised ethical aspects than scientific aspects (20%). With regards to tone of coverage, 32% of all the articles analysed were positive, 28% negative, and 40% neutral. Sixty percent of articles dealing specifically with animal cloning featured a positive tone, while only 13% of articles exclusively about human cloning had a positive tone. This 13% was comprised of articles on therapeutic rather than reproductive cloning. In terms of explaining the science associated with cloning, only 30% of articles provided an explicit explanation. Potential threats to the accuracy of explaining science were found to exist. Conclusions: While the overall findings were somewhat indistinct it seemed that when the media of the Western Cape reported on the cloning of animals it was done with a positive tone and emphasised the scientific aspects. Reporting on human cloning tended to feature a negative tone and emphasised the ethical aspects. The large number of ‘neutral’ results for both the ‘tone’ and 'science or ethics’ variables could indicate that the media were wishing to remain neutral. However, the large number of neutral articles relating to the ‘science or ethics’ variable could have a negative impact on public understanding. The small number of articles explaining cloning and an emphasis on ‘breakthrough’ news stories could also have a negative impact on public understanding.

The impact of tabloidisation on the South African press

Holt, Billie-Jean 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The advancement of news technology in the last few decades has lead to an information explosion of an unprecedented scope. Twenty-four hour a day news channels, electronic publications, the Internet, and a proliferation of print publications feed this media explosion. Coupled with this has been the growth of a celebrity culture, where the lives of the rich and famous have been placed under intense scrutiny. Commercial interests also have to be taken into account. It is conventional wisdom that sensational news sells newspapers. This news is not limited to celebrity news, but encompasses crime reporting as well as high profile scandals affecting ordinary people. As the news becomes more ubiquitous, the competition becomes tougher and the pressure to print what sells grows. The other commercial pressure is that of the marketers of the entertainment industry who have a vested interest in having the stars of their movies, music and television shows enjoy a high media profile. This study aims to determine whether the South Africa media has shown a trend towards reporting a more sensational and celebrity based form of news. It seeks to discover whether the South African news has become tabloidised. This will be done by analysing the content and presentation of the front page of The Cape Times, a Cape Town based broadsheet, over the period of several years. This will be used as a measure to determine whether or not the content and form of the South African media is following a trend to tabloidisation. The Cape Times, 'n Kaapse koerant, se voorblad is ontleed oor 'n tydperk van enkele jare.

Phylétika : divisions et subdivisions civiques en Ionie, en Carie, à Rhodes et dans les îles proches du continent de la mort d'Alexandre le Grand à l'arrivée des Romains / Civil Divisions and Subdivisions in Ionia, in Caria, Rhodes and in the islands close to the continent from Alexandre the Great’s death to the Romans’ arrival

Marre, Sébastien 03 September 2018 (has links)
Research has first to study civil divisions and subdivisions in Western Asian Minor cities at Hellenistic times and then show the changes between the pre-Alexander time and the birth of Roman domination. In the Greek world, citizens were divided into large groups: the tribes (phylai) and the phratries (phratriai). Those institutions were the basis of political organization. Then research has to show if kinship plays any role in the repartition of civil divisions and subdivisions in Western Asian Minor cities at Hellenistic times, since the principle of hereditary kinship seems to have been the norm; residential affiliation being, so it seems, a late phenomenon. Those tribe members consider they are descended from a common ancestor, most often a mythic character. Their subdivisions are often phratries which are associations that gather together several Families whose members consider they are kins. Last we have to show the similitudes and differences as to civil divisions and subdivisions in the different Western Asian Minor cities at Hellenistic Times. Thus we can study how citizenship status works in accordance to civil bodies. We may also wonder how citizens could exercise their rights, rights which were probably different from one city to the other and that surely developed in the said period. This study has to make allowances for what is from the role of civil divisions and subdivisions in the way cities are run and for what only concerns the inner organization of those institutions in matters of political structures.

Textual representations of migrants and the process of migration in selected South African media a combined critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics study

Crymble, Leigh January 2011 (has links)
South Africa has long been associated with racial and ethnic issues surrounding prejudice and discrimination and despite a move post-1994 to a democratic ‘rainbow nation’ society, the country has remained plagued by unequal power relations. One such instance of inequality relates to the marginalisation of migrants which has been realised through xenophobic attitudes and actions, most notably the violence that swept across the country in 2008. Several reasons have been suggested in an attempt to explain the cause of the violence, including claims that migrants are taking ‘our jobs and our women’, migrants are ‘illegal and criminal’ and bringing ‘disease and contamination’ with them from their countries of origin. Although widely accepted that many, if not all, of these beliefs are based on ignorance and hearsay, these extensive generalisations shape and reinforce prejudiced ideologies about migrant communities. It is thus only when confronted with evidence that challenges this dominant discourse, that South Africans are able to reconsider their views. Williams (2008) suggests that for many South Africans, Africa continues to be the ‘dark continent’ that is seen as an ominous, threatening force of which they have very little knowledge. For this reason, anti-immigrant sentiment in a South African context has traditionally been directed at African foreigners. In this study I examine the ways in which African migrants and migrant communities, as well as the overall processes of migration, are depicted by selected South African print media: City Press, Mail & Guardian and Sunday Times. Using a combined Corpus Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis approach, I investigate the following questions: How are migrants and the process of migration into South Africa represented by these established newspapers between 2006 and 2010? Are there any differences or similarities between these representations? In particular, what ideologies regarding migrants and migrant communities underlie these representations? My analysis focuses on the landscape of public discourse about migration with an exploration of the rise and fall of the terminologies used to categorise migrants and the social implications of these classifications. Additionally, I analyse the expansive occurrences of negative representations of migrants, particularly through the use of ‘othering’ pronouns ‘us’ versus ‘them’ and through the use of metaphorical language which largely depicts these individuals as en masse natural disasters. I conclude that these discursive elements play a crucial role in contributing to an overall xenophobic rhetoric. Despite subtle differences between the three newspapers which can be accounted for based on their political persuasions and agendas, it is surprising to note how aligned these publications are with regard to their portrayal of migrants. With a few exceptions, this representation positions these individuals as powerless and disenfranchised and maintains the status quo view of migrants as burdens on the South African economy and resources. Overall, the newspaper articles contribute to mainstream dominant discourse on migrants and migration with the underlying ideology that migrants are responsible for the hardships suffered by South African citizens. Thus, this study contributes significantly to existing bodies of research detailing discourse on migrants and emphasises the intrinsic links between language, ideology and society.

Symboly vyloučení ze společenství v lidové tradici / Symbols of exclusion from society in folk tradition

JUŘICOVÁ, Iveta January 2015 (has links)
The dissertation titled Symbols of exclusion from society in folk tradition concentrates on the interaction of symbols and folk tradition. It explores the way the phenomenon of love and death is traditionally viewed in the Czech country, namely during the Middle Ages and modern times. The main focus of this dissertation is on the social roles of women, although it also shows proof of social exclusion of a man as an executioner. To demonstrate the reasons behind excluding individuals on the outskirts of society, the author also gives short characteristics of the views on the issue of chastity, traditional expectations of fulfilling the female social roles - as virgins, wives and mothers. The author then gives examples of behavior which, in folk tradition, were looked upon as impure/virtueless.

Reclaiming Pusey for theology : allegory, communion, and sacrifice

Karlowicz, Tobias Amadeus January 2013 (has links)
Edward Bouverie Pusey once towered over nineteenth-century British theology, but he has now fallen into almost entire insignificance. However, analysis of this decline (Chapter 1) leads to a reassessment. His development—especially his complicated relationship with pre-Tractarian High Church Anglicanism—shows a deep criticism of post-Enlightenment intellectual trends, from his early years through his association with the Oxford Movement and the Tracts for the Times, to the end of his life (Chapter 2). This criticism led him to the patristic use of allegory, both as a biblical hermeneutic and as a creative, complex, image-based approach to theology (Chapter 3). His development of High Church theology (seen especially through comparison with Waterland) and his use of allegory can be traced throughout his theology. His understanding of union with Christ and theosis reveals both: the sacraments have a strong symbolic dimension, while his positions on baptismal regeneration and the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist show a development rather than a rejection of earlier High Church theology (Chapters 4 and 5). His understanding of the atonement blends High Church reliance on sacrificial types with his unitive theology to reconfigure traditional satisfaction theory as restoration of love for God, rather than redemption from punishment—a position which marks Pusey as an important transitional figure in 19th c. theology (Chapter 6). The flexibility of Pusey's allegorical approach also allows him to blend a High Church tradition of spiritual sacrifice with sacramental participation in Christ's self-offering, so that sacrifice becomes an aspect of union with Christ (Chapter 7). Pusey's use of allegory shows similarities to postmodern theology, while his development of High Church theology shows his originality (Chapter 8).

No. of bitstreams: 1 ReginaCelia2.pdf: 1687141 bytes, checksum: 50e7ce162b3229936883a80bf80b87cd (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-09-27 / The present study consists of a survey on the entry of children of six years in elementary education with a duration of nine years at four public schools in the state of São Paulo. As a foundation for the analysis of this educational policy, the theoretical approach is guided studies on the legislation, the concept of childhood, knowledge about the learning processes of reading and writing, training and practice of teachers. This is a qualitative research, structured analysis of propositions in official documents, in a questionnaire (for 25 teachers) and interviews with five of deepening teachers among those who answered the questionnaire. The purpose of the questionnaire and the interviews presented as objective: profiling and studying aspects of the professional life of teachers (research subjects); examine the ideas that guide their literacy practices; were prepared to analyze how this new reality, to discuss the progress and / or difficulties encountered in developing the pedagogical work with children from 1 year and analyze what they believe to be guaranteed for the successful education of these children. The research shows that include children six years in elementary school was, for the respondents, a positive measure, however, the deployment occurred without the preparation of schools and teachers. Teachers who took classes fell 1st year of the challenge, even without the structural conditions and proper training, organize time and school spaces. It was evident in the analysis, reporting about the practices of the teachers interviewed, the emphasis on literacy and literacy, although all recognize the importance of playful dimension in educational activities in the classroom. This emphasis stems from interpretations that make the determinations of the State Secretariat for Education and the indirect pressures perceived by them as the commitment to literacy in the 1st year of compulsory schooling, between them, the expectation of the school community parents and teachers the years following Elementary School. Finally, the data also show the need to ensure the training of educators, as well as discussions about the curriculum of classes for six years.

: fonctionnement et fabrique d'une ville intermédiaire sur le temps long / Space and society at Vendôme between the 11th and the beginning of the 19th century : functionning and urban fabric of the intermediate town in the longue durée

Simon, Gaël 12 December 2015 (has links)
The study of the functioning and of the urban fabric of Vendôme between the 11th and the beginning of the 19th century offers a different interpretation of small towns showing the great complexity of the urban phenomenon in a type of town often regarded as the simple result of the construction of a castle. As a matter of fact, a town is the result of a large number of time and space units in which the time of the people involved in various projects is not the same as the time of structures. To start with, the concepts and the modeling rules of urban fabric used in this research are defined (part 1). Then, the study of Vendôme in the longue durée allows to distinct four main phases in the urban functioning for which the projects fulfilled by various actors are analyzed as well as their impact on urban space (part 2). Finally, urban structures are considered both from a morphological and functional point of view through a model based on the diversity of urban objects such as plots, street system, buildings etc. which have their own timing but interact with each other (part 3)
