Emerging from flatness : Murakami Takashi and superflat aesthetics

Steinberg, Marc A. January 2002 (has links)
This thesis is an examination of the concept and the term "superflat" as it is elaborated by the Japanese artist Murakami Takashi in his writings, in the exhibition he curated under the same name, and in his own art. / Its aim is to contextualize Murakami's project on one hand in terms of a similar attempt to define a Japanese national aesthetic in the early 20 th century, and on the other in terms of the 1990's tendency to return to Edo Japan to find the "origins" of Japan's postmodernity. / Murakami's own art is then turned to in order to both elaborate on and test the aesthetic of Japanese art he calls the superflat. This examination of Murakami's art permits the formulation of an aesthetics of Japanese contemporary art and animation even as it will afford an understanding of the "cultural logic" of the digital age that informs Murakami's argument. / Questions important to this project are: Is the articulation of a local aesthetics possible in this globalizing age? What are the aesthetic traits of the digital age? How should the superflat---as both idea and project---be interpreted?

Apropriações de elementos constitutivos do mangá: investigando Murakami e Nara / Appropriation of constituent elements of the manga: investigating Murakami and Nara

Nakagawa, Simonia Fukue 02 March 2016 (has links)
In its first chapter, this study arises the discussion of the manga as an artistic expression. Its creation model is distinguished from other comics by the plurality and diversity of genres. It presents studies on the visual language of comics from Western and Japanese theories which correlates, such as how to design panel, balloons, gutter, motion lines, living lines and they characteristics of universal language. The lines, backgrounds and pages compositions establish relations with the Japanese traditional art of emakimono (paint rollers), ukiyo-e woodblock prints and kimonos patterns, and have, therefore, such elements analyzed. Furthermore, approach the onomatopoeia, a peculiar characteristic of the Japanese language that reveal as necessary support to value sensations and emotions in the narrative, even when silence is proposed; it also accentuates the visual graphics that are part of the scene. Finally, the features are lifted in the construction of the characters, as the form given to bodies and eyes and facial expressions, which have strong resemblance to the woodblock ukiyo-eimages, the illustrated magazines Jojo-ga and drawn by Osamu Tezuka. The second chapter puts on the manga boom debate, anime and otaku culture of the postwar period, which are presented to the Japanese artists of the 1990s, as important elements for the production of their artworks: thus are inserted the work of Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara, in its relations with the manga and traditional arts. Even with ideal distinct, these artists participated in the movement Neo Japanese Pop and exposure Super Flat (2000), and rethought their production from natural disaster 2011. The difficulty in finding bibliography, much of the information obtained in this study were based on newspaper texts, curators and critics of Western and Japanese art, as well as visits to exhibitions of artists in Japan. Added to this chapter kawaii aesthetic ideal which reveals infantile universe, which influences the arts, strengthened by foment Nipponese pop industry, crosses borders to the West and so is configured as national identity product. The artworks of the above artists dialogue with this aesthetic and also with basara aesthetics, which boasts what is exuberant and luxurious.

The Monstrous Feminine : i Takashi Miikes filmer / The Monstrous Feminine : in Takashi Miike's Films

Ritzén, Gisela January 2013 (has links)

A pluralidade de Takashi Murakami no desafio aos limites da arte / Takashi Murakami\'s plurality in defying the limits of art

Barretto, Lizia Maria Ymanaka 08 February 2019 (has links)
This study aims to investigate the plurality observed in the work of contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami (1962-), discussing how his work in various areas is directly linked to his artistic and to make poetic development. In the first chapter, we will construct a panorama on the art market, presenting some of the main agents and events that constitute and move it. Understanding this scenario makes it possible to delve more clearly into Murakami\'s various actions during the second chapter. Taking the \"artista-etc\" [artist-etc] concept of the Brazilian artist and critic Ricardo Basbaum (1961-) as a starting point, we will begin to realize that partnerships in fashion and design, as well as the work of gallerist, collector and entrepreneur, are roles that Murakami plays in search of answers linked to his inquiry about art. The complexity of the artist is also seen in his aesthetic development, which is the third chapter of this text. Through the mapping of his accomplished works and artists who have instigated him since his formation in college, we will find a diverse repertoire, started with the practice of nihonga. The dissatisfaction with this language led Murakami through a series of experiments, before developing the super flat concept by which he is recognized worldwide. The international projection gained allowed the artist to continue to expand his research, through his partnership with Professor and Art Historian Nobuo Tsuji (1932-) in which he works to rescue some Japanese names of Japanese art that have yet been little-studied outside (and even within) Japan. It is hoped that, from the reading about Murakami presented in this work, one can contribute to the discussions on contemporary and Japanese art.

The Influence of Japanese Composers on the Development of the Repertoire for the Saxophone and the Significance of the Fuzzy Bird Sonata by Takashi Yoshimatsu

Hanafusa, Chiaki 05 1900 (has links)
The history of the saxophone and its development as a performance medium in Japan is short when compared with other European countries and the United States. In this short history, the saxophone performance level in Japan has increased dramatically. At the same time, compositions for the saxophone by Japanese composers have gained more popularity in the world as can be seen in the program of the World Saxophone Congress and the North American Saxophone Alliance conference. The saxophone history in Japan, including contributions of Arata Sakaguchi (1910-1997), Ryo Noda (b.1948), and Nobuya Sugawa (b.1961), is discussed in order to understand the increase of performances of pieces for saxophone by Japanese composers. The success of many original compositions, especially those that incorporate the synthesis of Eastern and Western music, is another significant element examined in this document. Yoshimatsu approaches music for classical saxophone as a new genre. He seeks all possible sounds that the saxophone can create - beautiful tone to "noise like" - in his compositions. The blending of other musical styles in one piece is one of Yoshimatsu's compositional styles, which can be observed in Fuzzy Bird Sonata; however, he does not limit himself to a single style. This unique style with some technical challenges attracts saxophonists and audiences. An analysis of Fuzzy Bird Sonata is provided in order to have a better understanding of the piece and to address performance practice issues. Also various interpretations are examined by comparing available recordings of Sugawa, Nicolas Prost, and Rob Buckland.
