The viability of on-demand air travel in dynamic marketsRedelinghuys, Martyn Jan Josef 24 February 2013 (has links)
Business travel has become a considerable part of the daily lives of scarce human resources. Adding to the frustration is the requirement to travel with the current available modes of transport in developing countries, which effectively create a constraint in the ability of scarce human resources to apply their limited time more effectively. This study seeked to understand how and why business travel impacts the productivity of scarce human capital as well as how alternative methods of travel can contribute to increased productivity. In the study the researcher aimed to determine if an on-demand air travel service could be viable in a dynamic market such as South Africa and if so, what value a successful implementation will add to a company and the country. The research was conducted by making use of a descriptive quantitative study over two populations namely business travellers and aircraft pilots. This allowed the researcher to answer the three research questions that were identified. The study has found that not only productivity, but also the work-life balance of scarce human capital is affected negatively by the requirement to conduct business travel. It was also found that on-demand air travel could soon be a viable alternative mode of transport in dynamic markets, which would contribute to improved productivity levels of scarce human capital. This in turn will stimulate company growth and ultimately increase the overall economic growth of the country. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / unrestricted

Postavení řidičů tradičních taxislužeb a alternativních služeb z hlediska pracovního práva / The legal status of drivers of traditional and alternative taxi services in terms of employment lawKotara, Jan January 2020 (has links)
The legal status of drivers of traditional and alternative taxi services in terms of employment law Abstract The aim of this thesis is to apply the defining features of dependent work to the activity performedby drivers in domestic taxi service - and based on this analysis - to decide whether the nature of this work really corresponds to the declared position of drivers as independent providers of transport services mediated by a third party, or whether they potentially are misclassifiedemployees entitledto all labor benefits associatedwith such status. The subject of interest is not only the activityof "traditional"but also "alternative"taxi drivers. Therefore, the work first deals with the phenomenon of shared economy, term allegedly justifiingthe above-mentioneddichotomy and in the eyes of some authors a reason for special legal treatment of some subjects onthe taxi market.Throughthe analysis of the theoryof shared economy with emphasis on the transport sector, a historical excursion into the sharing of transport capacity and a comparison of the operation of BlaBlaCar and Uber services, it is concluded that the subjects dealt in the thesis cannot be subsumed under the concept of shared economy. Furthermore, the case law of the CJEU is analyzed, on the basis of which Uber is qualifiedas a service in the...

Business plan for Akero HBHolmgren, Mattias January 2012 (has links)
The goal of this project has been to investigate the possibility to start a business out of the Taxi-service and application Nico Ghatoore and Jimmy Wickström are developing as a part of their bachelor thesis. This goal has been reached by formulating business ideas and developing business models together with Nico and Jimmy and later written a detailed business plan according to the current standards and thus evaluating the quality of the business idea. This has shown us that it is possible to succeed given that the three largest taxi operators are willing to buy customers to fill upp their extra capacity.

Study of a Shared Autonomous Vehicles Based Mobility Solution in StockholmRigole, Pierre-Jean January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this report is to provide an analysis of potential benefits of a fleet of Shared Autonomous Vehicles (SAV) providing a taxi service to replace private car commuter trips in a metropolitan area. We develop a framework for dynamic allocation of SAVs to passenger trips, empty-vehicle routing and multi-criteria evaluation with regard to passenger waiting time, trip time and fleet size. Using a representation of current private trip demand for the Stockholm metropolitan area and a detailed road network representation, different scenarios (varying levels of accepted passenger waiting time at origin and accepted increase in travel time) are compared with respect to passenger travel time, number of vehicles needed and vehicle mileage. In a second step the environmental impacts of the different scenarios are assessed and compared using a life cycle approach. The assessment includes both a fleet consisting of currently in use gasoline and diesel cars as well as electrical cars. The results show that an SAV-based personal transport system has the potential to provide an on-demand door-to-door transport with a high level of service, using less than 10 % of today's private cars and parking places. In order to provide an environmental benefit and lower congestion an SAV-based personal transport system requires users to accept ride-sharing, allowing a maximum 30% increase of their travel time (15% on average) and a start time window of 10 minutes. In a scenario where users are not inclined to accept any reduced level of service, i.e. no ride-sharing and no delay, empty vehicle drive of an SAV-based personal transport system will lead to increased road traffic increasing environmental impacts and congestion. Envisioning a future using electrical cars a SAV-based system and electrical vehicle technology seems to be a “perfect” match that could definitely contribute to a sustainable transport system in Stockholm.

The role of the minibus taxi industry in promoting the development of small businesses in South Africa : a case of Mankweng Taxi Association, Limpopo ProvinceMolobela, Terrance Talent January 2021 (has links)
Thesis ( MPAM.) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / This study focuses on the role of the minibus taxi industry in promoting the development of small businesses at Mankweng taxi ranks. This area of study has not been thoroughly researched; therefore, existing literature on the role of the taxi industry in promoting the development of small (especially informal) businesses is limited. This lack thereof does not help in casting a clear sense of how the taxi industry benefits small businesses around their operation centres. Therefore, this study specifically investigated the role of the minibus taxi industry in promoting the development of small businesses at Mankweng Taxi Ranks.
Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were employed, with the use of structured questionnaire and focus group interviews as techniques to collect data from Mankweng Taxi Ranks. The study had a target population of 300. Stratified random sampling was chosen for small businesses while random sampling was employed for taxi operators, and purposive sampling was applied for employees at Mankweng main taxi offices.
This study had a sample size of 300, sampled differently with 180 participants forming part of stratified random sampling and 110 participants forming part of random sampling. Two different questionnaires were prepared for both small businesses and taxi operators. Questionnaires were randomly distributed to small businesses (30 hawkers, 15 filling stations, 69 street produce sellers, 15 car washers, 15 restaurants, and 36 caterers) and 110 taxi operators at different taxi ranks such as Mankweng, Boyne, Ga-Mothapo, Solomondale and Dikgale. Additionally, the focus group interviews were purposively conducted with 10 employees working at Boyne, as it is the main office of the Mankweng Taxi Association, and they hold more administrative information relating to the taxi business.
The findings of the study show that, the taxi industry play a significant role in promoting the development of small businesses. The study further reveals that, poor business plans, inadequate working conditions, taxi violence, reckless driving, and a lack of funding affected the investigated businesses, as well as lack of exposure to new products, confronted the Mankweng Taxi Association. There seems to be a huge gap, both in research and government policy, that, seeks to promote the development of small businesses depending on the environment, and infrastructure, in which these businesses operate. Additionally, this study reveals the nature of the taxi industry and its crucial role in benefiting small businesses. All stakeholders in the taxi industry need to create an environment that, encourages the spirit of harmony, active cooperation and development dedicated to the betterment of the taxi industry.

SAFARI-Taxi: Secure, Autonomic, FAult-Resilient, and Intelligent Taxi Hailing SystemHoque, Mohammad A., Pfeiffer, Phil, Gabrielle, Sanford, Hall, Edward, Turbyfill, Elizabeth 29 March 2018 (has links)
The Secure, Autonomic, FAult-Resiliant and Intelligent Taxi Hailing System (SAFARI-Taxi), currently undergoing prototyping, will broker rides between taxi drivers and spontaneous taxi users, or hailers. SAFARI-Taxi will leverage anticipated growth in connected vehicle infrastructure (V2X) as enabled by dedicated short range communications (DSRC) technology to replace line-of-sight street hailing with automated dispatch, via public kiosks and smart phone apps Hailing will be managed with a novel protocol, based on Hailing Request, Service Offer, Hailer Response, and Ride Cancellation messages. Threats to its operation will be mitigated using distributed dispatch; provisions for assuring correctness, timeliness, and appropriate content; and account lockouts, "hailing deposits", and ticketing. Preliminary results indicate that the system will reduce the time to match hailers with taxis. The project's goals align with the U.S. Dept. of Transportation's vision for dynamic mobility applications, including Integrated Dynamic Transit Operation, which specifically targets integration of taxis with public transportation through a citywide connected infrastructure.

Using Stochastic and Deterministic Approaches for Integrating Freight Movement and Aircraft Taxiing to Solve the Gate Assignment ProblemBehrends, John A 12 August 2016 (has links)
With the increase in fuel prices, the efficient movement of aircraft around an airport can impact the profitability of a flight and an airline. The assignment of a flight to a specific gate not only impacts passenger satisfaction, but also impacts the efficient movement of aircraft from the departure gate to the runway. There have been bodies of research investigating aircraft taxi problems and gate assignment problems. However, each of these research bodies has not included the effects of the other research areas into their respective areas. This research presents a proposed framework that integrates the passenger or freight movement within a terminal with the taxiing of the aircraft to support an integrated approach to solving the gate assignment problem. A solution technique that incorporates a job shop scheduling solution method is presented and demonstrates that a large problem can be solved efficiently and in a short time using both deterministic and stochastic data.
