The structural analysis of the effects of distributed leadership on teacher professionalism

Joo, Young Hyeo 30 January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to analyze the direct effects of distributed leadership on teacher professionalism and the mediating effects of collective teacher efficacy, professional learning community, and teacher job satisfaction by using teacher data from the Korea Educational Longitudinal Study (KELS) of 2007, conducted by the Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI). After scrutinizing theoretical foundations and reported evidence on the relationships between research factors, the research constructed a structural equation model. The research questions that guided this analysis are as follows: 1) Does the model of this research fit the observed data?; 2) Does distributed leadership practice directly influence teacher professionalism?; and 3) Does distributed leadership practice indirectly influence teacher professionalism mediated by collective teacher efficacy, professional learning community, and teacher job satisfaction? As a result, the initial hypothesized research model shows an inadequate fit to the data. The researcher revised the initial research model by using the results of modification indices provided by the output result of the AMOS program. The results of the study revealed that 1) the research model successfully accounted for the KELS data, 2) distributed leadership negatively influenced teacher professionalism, and 3) distributed leadership indirectly and significantly influenced teacher professionalism, mediated by collective teacher efficacy, professional learning community, and teacher job satisfaction. Additionally, the effects of these mediators also indicated significant relationships between study variables. Public schools cannot achieve their goals and sustain fundamental reform without considering the day-to-day lives of educators, leadership practice, and educators’ workload, and sometimes even re-culturing of schools. School organization should be a place where school members all collaborate with each other to achieve organizational goals and where teachers and students are learning through reciprocal cooperation. When we consider that teacher professionalism can be directly associated with student and parent satisfaction and student achievement, this study contributes to the creation of a model that improves teacher professionalism, and by implication student achievement and satisfaction. / text

The appropriation of education policy on information and communication technology in South African schools

Vandeyar, Thirusellvan 01 June 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explore how education policy on information and communication technology (ICT) influences teaching and learning in South African schools. An instrumental case study applying backward mapping principles as a strategy of inquiry was used. Utilizing a social constructivist lens and guided by a theoretical framework of a socio-cultural approach to policy analysis, this exploratory qualitative research study set out to investigate how teachers in South African schools appropriate education policy on ICT. The case study included three schools from diverse socio-cultural settings, with two participating teachers at each of the identified research sites. The principal at each school and e-learning specialists (officials) at the District and Provincial Departments of Education constituted additional data sources. Data collection methods included interviews, classroom observations, field notes and document analysis. Constructivist grounded theory methods and computer assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS)were employed in the analysis of data. It was found that, teachers’ professionalism and agency are crucial in formulating and implementing a school-based e-education policy in practice. The national e-education policy currently exists as an “invisible policy” within the school context. Secondly, teachers reposition themselves as social and cultural actors of school-based policy appropriation and formulation rather than as recipients of, or reactors to the national e-Education policy. Thirdly, the lack of systemic support to teachers acted as the catalyst for the emergence of communities of practice between schools. The notion of “our” system as opposed to an imposed system prevails. Fourthly, teachers’ ignorance of the national e-Education policy indicates the need for policy development and implementation at school level and denotes a new construct to policy appropriation. I theorise that teachers’ beliefs, attitudes, professionalism and will to improve teaching and learning through the use of ICT are integral and necessary conditions for effective policy implementation. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Science, Mathematics and Technology Education / unrestricted

Vi är ju inte robotar : en fenomenografisk studie om bedömningsarbete i musikämnet / We are not robots : a phenomenographic study about assessment in music education

Tryggmo, Kristoffer January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to create a deeper understanding of how music teachers in Sweden interpret the phenomenon equal assessment. The purpose was also to investigate how music teachers practice equal assessment in the classroom. To achieve this a phenomenographic analysis of qualitative interviews with four music teachers. All of these participants were work at various upper-level lower secondary schools in southern Sweden. The results of the study show that the participants see challenges in carrying out an equivalent assessment in the music subject. Co-assessment is seen as a relevant approach to promoting equivalent assessment. The results show, however, that there are problems with co-assessment. One problem that is raised in the study’s result is the fact that music teachers are often alone in their subject competence and can therefore not discuss with colleagues. The participants also experience difficulties in assessing instruments outside their own instrument competence in an equivalent way. The results of the study show that formative assessment is used to give students the opportunity to achieve as high grades as possible during the work process at the individual level. Formative assessment is also described as part of the work with student health, which in turn promotes an equivalent education. In previous research, teachers' “gut feeling” is described as a problem in the equivalent assessment work, as it is considered to be substantiated by subjectivity. The results show, however, that gut feeling is seen as one of the music teacher's most important tools in teaching and that it should not be seen as subjective opinion but rather part of the music teaching profession.

Transformar para conformar: o profissionalismo docente e as normativas estatais para a rede de ensino paulista (1995-2014) / Transform to conform: the teacher professionalism and the legislation of São Paulo States system of education (1995 -2014)

Oliveira, Lucimara Domingues de 04 August 2017 (has links)
This research presents and discusses the legislation concerning the teacher work in the São Paulo States public system of education, in the period from 1995 to 2014, with the objective of analyzing the type(s) of teacher professionalism thats configured through the laws produced by the São Paulos Executive. More specifically, it aims to characterize the changes, made by the governments of that period, at the devices referring to the São Paulos teachers functional situation, taking as basis, the two main norms that rule their work: the Complementary Law nº444/1985, which inclines about the Statute of the Magisterium of São Paulos Public System of Education and the Complementary Law nº 836/1997, establishing Career Path, Salaries and Fees for the Board of the Magisterium of the Secretariat of Education members. Its intended, on this way, to analyze the nature and elements of teacher professionalism present in the documents and regulations produced by the state administration, taking into the justifications and considerations of governments for the creation or modification of these guidelines. Taking as nuclear theoretical reference works of Sachs (2015), Normand (2015) Evans (2011) and Evetts (2009), this research is supported by a bibliographical and documentary study and is guided by the following questions: What is the state\'s role in the conformation on teacher professionalism? What elements are used by the different administrations in force in the period privileged here for that? The data points to two processes that characterize the attempt of the São Paulo governments to shape teacher professionalism, in the way that the teachers suit to the guidelines of the State: one, in the short term, to introduce new elements, such as Career Promotion based on performance evaluation, who try to adapt the career and other regulations to the principles of a specific administration and another, a long-term, with mechanisms being introduced gradually, such as bonus policies, that ends up being adapted throughout the period but act in the direction of the State to mold the teacher professionalism. Its considered that the state action in the legislation that governs the teachers professional presents great challenges for the teaching profession, because puts in question the professions values and knowledge in the name of the teachers adequacy and their practices to the governmental guidelines, implemented in the name of greater effectiveness of the educational system of São Paulo.

About professionalism, it refers to a statement of what is specific in teaching and, according to Gimeno Sacrist?n (1991), also to a series of behaviors, knowledge, attitudes, skills, beliefs, aspects that characterize and delineate the specifications of teaching in a process of professional identity s construction, about what it implies to be a teacher. So, our main point is to investigate the role of initial training in constructing the professionalism of early childhood education s teachers. The methodology used in this research is based on a qualitative approach that applies some data collection techniques such as questionnaires and semi-structured interviews whose respondents are completing the Education course in a public university located in the state of S?o Paulo, Brazil. The data analysis is done according to the following categories: Initial formation to work in early childhood education, Conceptions of early childhood education, and Teaching profession in early childhood education. The main references of this study are Gimeno Sacrist?n (1991), Pimenta (2002), Azevedo (2007), Saviani (2008), Facci (2004) and other theorists. The results point to the need to reflect about what is the profile of early childhood education s teachers that we want to form in the context of initial training, since it is through it that professionalism is (re)build in order to strengthen and enhance the teacher. At last, it s hoped that this study contributes to initial formation of early childhood education s teachers, pointing out possibilities for reformulations and improvements in order to encourage further studies in the area.

O professor iniciante no Ensino Médio: um estudo a partir da profissionalidade docente / The beginner high school teacher: a study based on teacher professionalism.

Gimenes, Patrícia Borges 01 February 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to understand the insertion and permanence of beginning teachers in areas of the High School curriculum in four state schools located in Ribeirão Preto, for a period of up to three years. It is in the first years of teaching that teachers construct their professionalism, that is, they acquire a repertoire of knowledge, knowledge and practices aimed at the exercise of teaching. Research on the beginning teacher reveals that there are many problems faced at the beginning of the career: difficulty with the indiscipline of students, lack of teaching material, insecurity with methodology. In high school conditions are more precarious, because in addition to these difficulties pointed out, the teacher is required to be able to assign classes in different classes and in different schools to compose their workload. The theoretical framework that supports this work encompasses research references on teacher education such as André (2012), Gatti and Barreto (2009), Nóvoa (2009), Vaillant and Marcelo (2012), among others. The study was developed through a qualitative research of exploratory nature and the data were analyzed from the Content Analysis. The corpus consists of semi-structured interviews carried out with 8 beginning teachers, candidates and participants in the areas of the High School curriculum, in four schools of the Ribeirão Preto State Teaching Network. From the analyzes carried out, it was verified: a) that the insertion of some professors in the career was contemplated by initiatives of support of the direction of the school, or through the teachers themselves who tried to clarify their doubts with their peers; B) that beginning teachers have many difficulties at the beginning of their careers, especially in relation to the administration of personal and professional time and the organization of teaching, given the conditions of work that are submitted; C) that the factors of higher incidence pointed out to remain in the profession are: the established relationship with the students and with the work colleagues; The students\' learning and the recognition and appreciation of these professionals by the students. It is through the historical knowledge of training courses, educational theories, contact with the day-to-day school, the relationship with other colleagues in the profession, students, parents, other employees of the institution, that beginner teachers become aware and safe Of their professionalism. / The research, case study, focuses on the constitution of the professionalism of teachers who perform innovative practices in La Salle College Esteio. Sought to examine how the trajectories personal, academic (training) and professional of teachers leverage teaching practices from the perspective of innovation. Wanted to identify indicators of educational innovation from teachers' reports, relating them to the indicators already built on research with professors, checking which recurred in both contexts. Sought to understand, yet which indicators more present in the context of basic education and identify, from the design of the research subjects, elements of initial and ongoing training who are essential to promote quality education. In the study used a qualitative methodology that allowed us to understand the teaching professionalism from the context of their teaching practices, their perceptions and representations of the same. Data collection involved two perspectives. At first, to get callers to the survey, a questionnaire was used, enabling who teachers did indication of colleagues who considered innovative in their teaching practices. In the second step, the six teachers nominated by their peers, participated in the case study, when the data collection made use of semistructured interview. Data analysis was performed from Bardin, following the categories already built in the studies of Cunha and Lucarelli. The main research findings indicate that: a) the trajectories personal, academic (training) and professional are elements what constitutes teacher professionalism and devices that potentiate the pedagogical innovation; b) teachers of the study demonstrate concern for the proper development of their students, revealing that their professionalism assume the perspective of an an ethical and social commitment; c) the ordering of pedagogical innovation indicators reveals the conception of teaching and learning which regulates and guides the practice of teachers participating in this study. Somehow these indicators take on a feature of an epistemological-pedagogical dialogues permanently with the administrative, organizational, economic and psychosocial obstacle of the educational institution; d) continuing education can no longer be understood as a personal choice or option, for now to be an "imperative", dictated mainly by the environment of rapidly changing socio-cultural and technological; e) the classroom is an absolute laboratory for innovative teaching practices, where they germinate formative experiences both for the students and for teachers; f ) the students themselves, in some circumstances, become a source of knowledge for teachers. It is necessary, in the pedagogical process of emancipation, consider the value of listening to students; g) there is an enchantment and disenchantment by the teaching profession determined by the working conditions and institutional support; and h) some teachers do not recognize their innovative character in school space. The recognition from colleagues who admire and perceive your work.
