Female principals’ skills of managing conflict in primary schools dominated by female teachers in the Gingindlovu Circuit

Mthethwa, Joyce, Fikile, Kutame, A.P., Buthelezi, A.B. January 2019 (has links)
A dissertation submitted in accordance with the requirements for the Master’s Degree in Educational Management in the Department of Educational Planning and Administration, Faculty of Education at the University of Zululand, 2019. / Although the number of women managers in education is increasing, women continue to experience problems that prevent them from realising their full potential particularly as conflict managers. When female teachers are promoted to principalship positions, there are no programmes to equip them with relevant management skills required to lead and manage the schools effectively. This has resulted in some female principals showing lack of confidence in resolving conflict in schools, particularly where the staff is dominated by female teachers. Female principals tend to rely on their male colleagues should there be a case where they have to implement disciplinary measures. The aim of this study was to explore female principals’ skills of managing conflict in primary schools dominated by female teachers in the Gingindlovu Circuit. This study used a qualitative approach, collecting data through face-to-face interviews. Purposive sampling procedure was used to select participants for this study. The study established that female principals have skills of managing conflict despite their gender roles that have been taken as determinants that females may not do well as managers. Some gender roles, which include nurturing and accommodating, have been identified as key to female principals in assisting them when resolving conflict at the work place where the staff is dominated by female teachers. However, they still need to learn more about skills of managing conflict in schools. The study recommends that female principals be workshopped on how to manage conflict in a school situation soon after they have been appointed. A comparative study between female and male principals regarding management skills they have for resolving conflicts is recommended. / National Research Foundation

Teachers' perspective on learner bullying at selected Secondary schools in Moletjie Moshate Community

Kgopyana, Josephinah Kwena 05 November 2019 (has links)
Thesis (M. A.) --University of Limpopo, 2019. / Bullying seems to be prevalent in most secondary schools, and teachers have a daily task of dealing with it. In South Africa, there are many issues which influence teachers’ management of bullying, such as community violence and parental attitudes. Teachers’ abilities to identify and respond to incidents of bullying, and their knowledge of bullying behaviour can have an impact on anti-bullying strategies. Secondary school management as well as parents have a responsibility towards efforts to eliminate bullying in schools. Failure to reduce bullying in secondary schools would result in high failure rates and poor concentration on school work among learners. This study aimed to describe teachers’ perspectives on learner bullying at Schools A and B. This study used Albert Bandura’s (1977) Social Learning Theory which offers a theoretical framework that helped the researcher find meaning in respect of the roles of the bully, victim and offenders. The study followed a qualitative approach, using focus group sessions to collect data in order to explore teachers’ experiences of bullying. The qualitative data were analysed by means of thematic analysis to present the collected data. The responses were recorded in the form of writing. The data was thoroughly structured into themes. Information obtained from respondents was treated with great confidentiality. Purposive and availability sampling were used to identify potential respondents who were asked to volunteer to be part of the study. The research findings specified that teachers experience and observe a wide variety of bullying behaviour which takes place at different sites, both inside and outside the school grounds. Moreover, the teachers conveyed numerous factors which they experienced as pertaining to bullying and emphasised the perceived effects. In addition to this, the participants shared knowledge about their teaching practices and recommended a few approaches on how to deal with bullying more effectively in their schools.

A HISTÓRIA DA DISCIPLINA DE MÚSICA NO CURSO DE PEDAGOGIA DA UFSM (1984-2008) / THE HISTORY OF MUSIC IN THE PEDAGOGY COURSE AT UFSM (1984-2008)

Oesterreich, Frankiele 28 June 2010 (has links)
The present project is linked to the research line of Education and Arts of the Graduate Program on Education/UFSM and to the FAPEM study group and research: Teacher Management, Action and Research on Musical Education. The main objective was to investigate the history of Music in the Pedagogy Course at Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in terms of how it was organized and implemented. Besides, factors that influenced the syllabus organization were analyzed so that an understanding of the changes that took place in the subject of Music between 1984 and 2008 could be better assessed. This kind of investigation is part of the historical field of school subjects having as reference the researches developed by Bittencourt (2003), Chervel (1990), Goodson (1997, 2008) and Santos (1990). Metodologically, the investigation was organized based on oral history∕reports (ALBERTI, 2005; FREITAS, 2006; MEIHY, 2005), whose data were collected through some teachers interviews, teachers who saw changes made in the course syllabus, together with an analysis of corresponding documents. The Pedagogy Course, throughout its history, has been attempting to qualify future professionals in the different fields of knowledge. Thus, issues dealing with the teaching of Arts have permeated this area enabling prospective teachers to have contacts with knowledge necessary to develop classroom teaching. Concerning Musical Education, the insertion of music in the Pedagogy Course syllabus took place in 1984 and, since then, the area has been going through the process of constant development so that teachers can be better prepared. Many professors and teachers that deal with music subjects have contributed with their academic and professional experience besides their personal trajectories, establishing the mark of duty and professionalism of this area within the context of UFSM. Through the research, it has been verified that the year 1984 was seminal to what UFSM pedagogues profile should be. A new course was started, marked by up to date tendencies, with its syllabus organized based on specific methodologies to the different areas of knowledge. Throughout the years, formative propositions have been altered and the course has gone through three major changes - 1984, 2004 and 2007 - in order to comply with legislation, with area guidelines and the changes of conceptions on the part of professors and teachers responsible for the subject of music. The registered syllabus changes reflected a great amount of thought, discussions and movements, internal and external, regarding the context of the Education Center, which reflected a new dynamic in Brazilian education. The serious commitment on the part of the coordination and teachers regarding the course generated new syllabi, which followed new perspectives of what a new teacher should be, and have contributed to the quality improvement of school contexts in Santa Maria and towns in the vicinity.

We must make them good citizens of society, but we must also let them have their own opinion and at the same time we skould not be the thought police" : A qualitative interview study on teachers' definition and handling of controversial questions in the classroom

Axelsson, Joanna January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate how secondary social studies teachers define and deal with controversial questions in their teaching. This includes both how the teachers themselves choose to raise controversial issues and how they handle situations where students express themselves in controversial ways. In total, eleven high school social studies teachers were interviewed and the analysis led to two themes: Definition and Handling. In short, the results showed that both definition and handling are largely dependent on the context in which the teachers find themselves. The teachers further described that they had different strategies for handling controversial issues in their classroom. The teachers also described that they had different methods that they used to teach about controversial issues, where discussions that, with the help of previous research, could be categorized as deliberative in some cases. Furthermore, the teachers highlighted both positive and negative aspects of raising controversial issues in their teaching and they felt that specific abilities and knowledge were required of them as teachers to be able to deal with these issues. The education the teacher had received were seen by most teachers as not supportive, while colleagues were mainly what the teachers experienced as the most rewarding to get support from when dealing with controversial questions. The results in this study are largely consistent with the previous research on the subject, with the only major difference being that external context was also pointed out by the teachers in this study as important, which previous research did not focus on as much.

The quality is defined<br />as a collection of features, characteristics of products, goods, services, work, which challenges their capacities to meet the needs and the demands of the consumers in accordance with the goal and their expectations.<br />Because of the needs of the economy for labour forces, that are competent to produce products which would meet the needs and desires of buyers, the demands for the quality in the vocational education have become prominet. The assesment of the quality of the educational process is based on the educational results which comprise knowledge, abilities, skills and attitudes of students, which are required<br />through formal education in schools. A high quality education should not be viewed<br />as a process of consumption but as a process of interaction between teachers and students. The educational goal should be to provide opportunities for the students for their personal developement and for boosting their confidence that they would be able to adjust to new situations, and that they would be able to change such situations, if necessary. The education can never be a neutral process; it is<br />always based on values. The balance between objective facts and the examination of these facts represents a big challenge for a professional teacher (www.ei-ie.org).<br />The quality of educational results in the secondary vocational education is affected by<br />various factors, some of which are: teachers with their competences, management of<br />schools, educational curricula and programmes, material resources. For the purposes of research of the impacts and of the abovementioned factors, a questionnaire was designed for schoolmasters, teachers, students, parents and businessmen, through which a collection of data in the sample was<br />made. The reduction of the quantity of the data is conducted by means of factor analysis in SPSS Statistics 17, i.e., the extracting of the smallest number of factors was done, which represents well the interrelations in the collection of variables by means of: Analysis of major factors (Kajzer&#39;s<br />criterion), Factorization of the picture (screen test), Parallel analyses (programme used: Monte Carlo PCA for Parallel Analysis), The assessments of the adequacy of the data for the factor analysis (Bartlet test of specification and Kajzer-Majer-Olikin -<br />KMO indicator of the sample adequacy) For the data processing and in proving the main hypothesis as well as the auxilliary hypotheses, two basic statistical methods were used:<br />1. Descriptive statistics<br />2. Non-parameter test:<br />1. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test of the normality of the distribution<br />2. HI-square test<br />3. Graphic representation of the results of the statistical processing.<br />The results of the research have shown that the quality of the secondary vocational education depends on the teaching staff, school management, modular educational curricula and programmes and material resources.<br />For the fact that the quality of the secondary vocational education affects the increase of the level of production, the evidence was deducted on the basis of the results of the research which was conducted among businesmen. Further researches in the area of the quality of the secondary vocational education should be focused on: competences of teachers, competences of the management, correlation between the level of equipment of a school and the achievemtents of students, the impact of<br />modular educational curricula and programmes of individual subjects, reduction of the encumbrance of students, co-operation of schools and companies on defining the content of the programme of practical education, motivation of teachers and of the management of schools for a high qulity work and for achieving results with which all the beneficiaries will be satisfied.</p>
