The effects of social media on setting the agenda of traditional mediaMoyo, Nompumelelo 01 1900 (has links)
This study explored how social media are setting the agenda of the traditional media and re-defining the role of the journalists. Content analysis was done to analyse the coverage of Jacob Zuma stories in newspapers and on Facebook, from the 1st of February until the 30th of June 2018.The sample for the study was drawn from three local newspapers, the Citizen, the Sowetan, the NewAge (AfroVoice), as well as the Facebook page called #Zumamustfall. This was done to determine if newspapers which are traditional media were being influenced by social media in what stories to report on. Results from the study showed that social media are influential in building an agenda for the traditional media and in particular, with the Zuma story. In the same vein, it emerged that traditional and social media set the agenda for each other. Based on these findings the research recommends that other social media sites including Twitter be used in similar research to determine their effects on agenda setting of traditional media (newspapers). / Communication Science / M.A. (Communication Science)

Mapping South African internet user's opinions about the use of peer-to-peer file sharing technology to infringe on copyrighted films and/or television series contentBotes, Isabe 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate the various reasons consumers continue to infringe on copyrighted content, specifically in the South African context, even if the law forbids it. This investigation is two-fold since it also recognises that there are many individuals who do not infringe on copyrighted content even though they have access to peer-to-peer file sharing technology. This information could prove valuable since it can then be used to find comprehensive market-led solutions to the problem that targets the end-user. This study adopted a mixed method approach in order to cross validate findings and to reveal aspects of empirical reality. The target population for this study consisted of 100 adult South Africans who have access to the internet. Data was collected through an online, self-administered questionnaire. Quantitative data was analysed through descriptive statistics, while qualitative data was analysed through thematic analysis. The results show that there are variety of factors that influence respondents’ attitudes towards copyright infringement of films and/or television series through peer-to-peer file sharing technology, each of which is discussed in detail. The study concluded by identifying 24 factors that favourably influence people’s attitudes towards copyright infringement, including high prices of legitimate goods, historical inequality in South Africa, and perceived low risk of being caught and punished. Based on the conclusion above, the study recommends that policy makers such as government officials, boards of directors, managers, committees, and executives use the results of the study when making decisions and determining policies, especially in the South African context. / Communication Science / M.A. (Communication Science)

(e.g. adaptability, flexibility and innovativeness), which is situated within its human resources. Hence, the
recruitment function’s role is critical, since it is responsible for the procurement of key intellectual capital that
could equip the organisation with a competitive advantage. However, against the accelerated growth of the
Internet combined with global competition, traditional recruitment methods are increasingly failing to rise to
the challenge of securing key intellectual capital, due to being too time consuming and expensive.
Consequently, organisations are progressively turning to online recruitment (which does not refer to one
specific technique, but rather several different Internet tools that can be employed as a recruitment method,
such as organisational websites, specialised job sites, media websites or newsgroups). However, the
presence of an organisational website that advertises vacancies is not sufficient to guarantee its success as
a recruitment method. Hence, it is vital to gain an understanding of website recruitment, as well as how to
maximise the website’s effectiveness and ability to facilitate successful online applicant behaviour (SOAB), in
order to harness its full potential as a recruitment method, able to secure key intellectual capital. For the
purpose of this study, SOAB refers to potential applicants (i.e. job seekers entering an organisational website
in search of employment opportunities) being able to browse the website without any difficulty and obtain
relevant and sufficient information concerning the organisation and its listed vacancies. In addition to
enabling potential applicants to assess whether he/she will be able to fit, perform and accelerate in the work
climate and culture of the organisation (i.e. decide whether he/she would like to work for the organisation), a
website that facilitates SOAB, should also enable potential applicants to contact the organisation to address
additional information needs.
In essence, this study comprises of three phases and centres on the identification of website content- and
usability design benchmarks that should contribute to a website’s ability to facilitate SOAB. By means of a
comprehensive literature review, it is argued that the content- and usability design are vital contributing
factors to a website’s ability to facilitate SOAB. It is also proposed that the effectiveness of the website as a
recruitment method is, to a certain degree, linked to the effectiveness of the alignment of an organisation’s
online recruitment strategy with the five stages of potential applicants’ job decision-making process (i.e. the
recognition of an employment need, search for career related information, evaluation of career alternatives,
identification and acceptance of employment and post-choice evaluation).
Phase one, entails the identification of website content- and usability design benchmarks and culminates
with the development of the Website Benchmarks Checklist. Phase two, which constitutes the overall
purpose of this study, entails an audit of the sample of the ‘best’ SA employers’ (drawn from a survey
conducted by the Corporate Research Foundation, 2005) websites. The primary aim is to determine the
extent to which the sample’s website design incorporates the identified benchmarks. However, the quality of
potential applicants’ interaction with a website (i.e. informative content being communicated in an effective,
efficient and satisfactory manner), greatly influences their perception of the organisation’s image, its
attractiveness as an employer, as well as their intention to pursue employment within the organisation.
Hence, the third phase of the study entails the subjective evaluation of three websites (selected from the
audited sample), by a sample of potential applicants. Throughout the study, the empirical tests conducted were descriptive in nature and utilised survey research
methods to acquire the required data, related to the specified goals and objectives that encapsulate the aim
and purpose of this study. The results obtained provided valuable insight into website design benchmarks
that should assist potential applicants in their job decision-making process, increase a website’s ability to
facilitate SOAB and maximise its effectiveness as a recruitment method responsible for securing key
intellectual capital. In addition to revealing that the majority of the sample employs its website as a
recruitment method, the audit results also indicated that although a high level of adherence existed
concerning the sample’s incorporation of the usability design benchmarks. However, a notable difference
that ranged from very little to relatively high existed with regards to the extent to which the sample’s website
design adhered to the content design benchmarks. The subjective evaluation of the three websites by
potential applicants revealed that in addition to being critical contributors to the quality of their interaction with
a website, the content- and usability design also had a profound impact on their assessment of the websites.
Finally, the results also showed that a similarity existed between potential applicants’ subjective evaluation
and the extent to which the design of the three websites adhered to the recommended benchmarks (audit
results).

New media technology continues to provide journalists with sophisticated tools that are changing news processing and gathering. Economics journalists in particular have grasped the possibilities offered by new media technologies. Thus, this paper offers a theoretical and practical look at how new media technologies have impacted the production and processing of economics news in South Africa, with a particular focus on Fin24.com which is South Africa's biggest online economics news publication. Using qualitative research methods and the case-study approach, this thesis documents the impact of new media technologies on the production of economics news. It draws on Witschge and Nygren's (2009) framework which describes how new media technologies change the nature in which news is produced and processed. New media technologies in this study will refer to the Internet, particularly search engines like Google, social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, Blogs as well as mobile telephony. Economics journalism will here refer to all coverage of economics and business-related news. This is because the case study (Fin24.com) covers both business and economics journalism by strict definition. Findings reveal that these new media technologies have not only changed economics newsgathering and processing but also journalistic routines. The findings generally show that new media technologies make it easier for economics journalists to produce the news quickly and efficiently. Indeed, the most distinguishing characteristic of new media is its overall speed, which is both challenging and attractive. The findings also reveal that new media technologies within a newsroom can be problematic in a number of ways, mainly raising issues of accuracy and credibility thus challenging the profession of economics journalism more than ever.

The impact of farmer support programmes on market access of small holder farmers in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal ProvincesMpuzu, Misery Sikelwa January 2013 (has links)
Most smallholder farmers in South Africa are characterized by poor resources such as land, labour and capital while they play an important role in poverty alleviation especially in poor rural areas. Smallholder farmers are increasingly recognized because of their contribution to household food security. The world markets are increasingly being integrated due to globalization and liberalization. As a result, smallholder farmers are facing increasing market competition, not only in international markets but in local markets as well. However, smallholder farmers often face a number of barriers to accessing these markets arising in part from the tightening of food safety and quality standards requiring compliance with phytosanitary and sanitary standards and growing power of supply chain integration. Furthermore, the viability of these smallholder producers is constrained by institutional obstacles which include lack of access to information, high marketing and transaction costs and low quality and lack of critical volume in the absence of bulking up arrangements, etc. These barriers have contributed to the exclusion of smallholder/small-scale farmers from formal markets. In order to address these obstacles and speed up the pace of agrarian reform many support schemes (farmer support programmes) are now being designed to specifically address market access and value chain issues through unique co-innovation arrangements to improve the farmer’s access to profitable international chains. A number of farmer support programmes (FSP) have been implemented in South Africa to reduce the risk of a lack of capacity and a lack of economic and/or financial experience in smallholder farms. Intervention measures have been instituted to these smallholder farmers to assist them to move out of poverty through agricultural production. The aim of this study was to understand the roles played by farmer support programmes in addressing income and welfare levels and sustainability of smallholder farmers in South Africa. Eighty nine (89) farmers were interviewed for this study and almost half (49%) of them received support from various organizations while 51% of the sampled farmers did not receive any support. The study was designed to compare the two groups between the treated and control group to assess the impact of these programmes.Using a Tobit and Propensity Score Matching technique, potential diffusion effects were eliminated between farmers supported by Farmer Support Programmes and farmers that did not belong to support services. The latter was selected from comparable communities with no agricultural support services. Findings from the Tobit regression and propensity score matching are consistent across the two methods, suggesting that being a member of any agricultural support programme has a significant positive impact on income and welfare of smallholder farmers.Farmer Support Programmes and collective marketing activities such as the collection and sale of members’ products appear to have a significant and positive impact on smallholder welfare of those farmers engaged in them. In the second analysis the study tested the types of arrangements that farmers would adopt to market their produce. From the results it was established that those farmers who were supported by institutional arrangements or FSP had better access to markets than those farmers who operated as individuals. Marginal effects are used to show the degree to which farmers chose a particular marketing channel or institutional arrangement that these farmers take when trying to access better paying markets. Then the final analysis is on factors that determine the extent to which collective action contribute to farmers’ income and market access. A number of variables (age, distance to the market, region the farmers are located) were evaluated using the multinomial regression model. Empirical results suggest that among South African cooperatives, those established in KwaZulu-Natal and partly in the Eastern Cape and upon the voluntary initiative of farmers are more sustainable and have access to better paying markets both locally and internationally than the other areas. The results also show that NGO-supported cooperatives have a longer life span than Government controlled cooperatives.

The influence of Web 2.0 technologies on the use of public libraries in Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, South AfricaMatobako, Molaodi Margaret 06 1900 (has links)
Recent innovations and advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs) have resulted into radical changes in the way information resources are provided, and have also brought about several options to handle a wide-range of information services effortlessly. Web 2.0 or social media is one of these innovations which expands the option in information services provision. Against this backdrop, this study intended to investigate the use of Web 2.0 technologies in the public libraries in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality in South Africa. The study was guided by mixed-methods of quantitative and qualitative approaches, because the approach enables the researcher to cover a wide variety of issues. The study adopted a sample survey research design to guide selection of subjects. Two data collection tools namely: a self-administered questionnaire were used for collecting data from 248 library users, while unstructured interview schedules were used to collect qualitative data from 16 library officials. The response rate for the survey of library users was 69%, a good rate for an unsolicited survey. The findings revealed that Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality libraries have ICT equipment with access to Web 2.0 technologies and that these technologies are also highly utilised. However, lack of training, low bandwidth, and short time allowed to access WIFI makes it difficult for the library users and staff to fully benefit from the web-based services offered by these libraries. Other factors include poor staff attitudes, technical problems, and challenges in marketing of online public access and catalogue, restrictions of social networking sites, non-linkage of the library OPAC to social media, geographical distances, and load shedding. The study concluded by recommending allocation of sufficient funds to cater for ICT trainings, free WIFI, uninterrupted power supply, increased bandwidth, amongst others which will enhance the quick and effective service that will meet the information needs of their users. / Information Science / M.A. (Information Science)

This study was conducted at the UNISA Library. The study sought to investigate the information technology skills and competencies of the library staff members in the Information Resource Distribution directorate of the University of South Africa Library, with regard to the utilisation and application of information technology tools to handle or process online requests from remote clients timeously and efficiently. Observation, questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data, whereby all the information resource distribution staff members and their supervisors were asked to participate.
The study found that information resource distribution staff members were skilled and competent with regard to processing online requests from remote clients. This means that they were able to use IT to process and deliver requested information resources. However, observation indicated that staff members lack the dedication and commitment to ensure speedy processing and delivery of requests. In addition, they were faced with problems and challenges that impacted on them not providing quality services to remote clients. Developing a feasibility framework based on the characteristics of big data to reduce the taxation gap in South AfricaCilliers, Tanya 03 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to develop a conceptual framework to aid in the reduction of the taxation gap in South Africa (SA) through the use of third-party data and information technology.
In order to develop a framework to prevent non-compliance, an understanding was required of the areas that would enable such a framework to be successful. Since governance, risk and compliance (GRC) is an emerging area in the corporate and information technology domain, organisations, including revenue bodies, are confronted with an increased risk and a growing number of regulatory, legal and other compliance requirements. The frame of reference for integrated governance, risk and compliance was used as base to determine the areas that had to be included in the new feasibility framework for the South African Revenue Service (SARS) in order for the framework to enhance compliance. Thus, the frame of reference for integrated governance, risk and compliance provided a contextual understanding of the areas that had to be reviewed in order to ensure that the framework that was developed adhered to all aspects that would make it a suitable and acceptable framework within SARS.
Since the new conceptual framework will be used to address compliance and risk management, existing frameworks had to be considered – one in particular, namely the Compliance Risk Management Process as described by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The OECD guidance note outlines compliance risk management as a structured iterative process for the “systematic identification, assessment, ranking, and treatment of tax compliance risks” that will enhance decision-making. This structural process is depicted in the Compliance Risk Management Process which can be used by revenue bodies, including SARS. Thus, once the different areas had been identified, discussed and understood, the existing Compliance Risk Management Process as described by the OECD was discussed to identify how the new conceptual framework that would be developed as part of this study could enhance this existing framework.
Finally the framework was developed by making use of an extended literature review on the main characteristics of ‘big data’, which was then tested with the use of two selected case studies and concluded with a comparative analysis of the case studies.
Overall, the framework will aid to determine whether it is feasible to continue with a project to use third-party data and information technology to automate the detection and prevention of taxation gaps before spending too many resources without any significant effect on diminishing the taxation gap. It is therefore recommended that SARS implement this new feasibility framework as a pre-check in order to determine whether:
there is third-party data available for a specific type of transaction that will result in the reduction of the taxation gap;
the third-party data is reliable and usable. If not, which changes are required from the third party in order to ensure that it can be linked to specific taxpayers (for example, such as capturing additional data or changing the format of existing data that had been captured in order to ease the extraction process);
any tax acts or legal aspects should be enhanced to ensure all relevant taxpayer information is available from a specific third party; and
both organisations (SARS and the third party) have the relevant information technology to ensure SARS can extract, store and manipulate the data in a timely fashion in order to obtain the maximum effect.
In conclusion, a new feasibility framework was developed as part of this study in order to aid SARS with the reduction of the taxation gap by using third-party data and information technology. The purpose of the new feasibility framework is to identify whether there is third-party data available and whether any changes are required to the data in order to provide SARS with a mechanism to link it to specific taxpayers. This will provide SARS with guidance as to the steps that are required in order to automate the process of collecting third-party data through by using information technology. The feasibility framework would also indicate whether it is feasible to continue with such an automation project before exhausting too many resources without any significant effect on reducing the taxation gap. / Taxation / M. This research investigated the feasibility of South African translations of Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). The study provides an introductory overview of DDC throughout the world, followed by its use in South Africa. The introduction highlights shortcomings and possible solutions – of which translations seem to be the most ideal. This research involved a critical analysis of the literature on DDC
translations, a documentary analysis and technology-based research in the form of Google translations and evaluation of parts of Abridged Edition 15 of DDC.
The critical analysis of the literature and the documentary analysis identified problems relating to translations, how translations deal with shortcomings in DDC, the fact that no literature exists on multilingual translations, and the process of translations (including the fact that this is an expensive endeavour). It also revealed information about sponsorship and the mixed translation model.
The technology-based research, using Google Translate for translations of parts of Abridged Edition 15 and the subsequent evaluation of these translations indicated that Google translations were comprehensive and needed minimum editorial effort. Further to this it paved the way for describing a possible workflow for South African translations and indicated that the parts already translated as well as
further Google translations can expedite the translation process. A model for South African translations, based on only the cost of the Pansoft translation software was proposed. The mixed model approach, where some languages are used as main languages (schedules, Relative Index terms and the like) and others for Relative Index terms only, was deemed the most appropriate in the South African context.
This led to the conclusion that DDC translations into ten of the official South African languages are indeed feasible. The research supports translations that keep the integrity of DDC intact, with possible expansions based on literary arrant. It is important, though, to get the support of the South African library community and authoritative bodies such as the National Library of South Africa and/or the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) to negotiate and sign a contract for these translations. / Information Science / D. Accommodation of Grade R learners with cerebral palsy by teachers and practitioners : a case study of two special schoolsStevens, Michelle Sharon 02 1900 (has links)
The study explored how a practitioner and a teacher accommodated children living with cerebral palsy in Grade R, also referred to as the reception year, at two special schools, especially how they adapted the environment and used assistive devices.
Cerebral Palsy is the most common form of a neurological disorder that appears in infancy or early childhood, permanently affecting body movement and muscle coordination. Research has illuminated that early specialist intervention such as assistive devices, augmentative and alternative commutation methods and assistive technology can make the world of difference to the future of the child.
My research afforded me the opportunity to observe the children in Grade R living with cerebral palsy, with the practitioner and the teacher in their natural setting at school level. I followed the deductive paradigm, and adopted a case study design.
The use of assistive devices and argumentative and alternative communication has historically been the domain of occupational-, speech- and physiotherapists. With the introduction of inclusive education and the new screening, identification, assessment and support policy to be conducted in all Grade R classes at all schools in South Africa, my research will be beneficial to mainstream and full-service schools, as well as special schools. Young children living with cerebral palsy will be included in all these schools and will need support from expert teachers and practitioners, who are knowledgeable about their requirements for an adapted environment and the use of assistive devices and augmentative and alternative communication methods. The study found that the Grade R staff at the special schools were knowledgeable, but their knowledge was superficial, their classrooms lacked adapted toys, and assistive technology was non-existent. Teachers and practitioners need practical training on the importance of movement for children living with cerebral palsy and the training should emphasize that experiencing the world through assistive devices alleviates barriers to learning and development. / Inclusive Education / M.
