Adolescents' sexual attitudes: a Mennonite sample

One hundred fifty-six adolescent respondents from the Virginia Mennonite Conference were surveyed regarding their perceived influences of their attitudes toward sexuality and the Mennonite Church's position on various sexual issues. The adolescents were more sure of their own beliefs about sexuality than they were about the church's position. The church was not perceived as a major source of influence on their attitudes when compared to friends, the media, and the family. A comparison of early and late adolescents did not reveal any significant difference in the amount of perceived influence of the church. The gender of the respondent was not found to differentiate significantly on any of the variables under investigation. The type of school the adolescent attended--either public or Mennonite--was related to a difference in the response to beliefs about premarital sex and pregnancy outside of marriage. Students at public schools held more accepting views on these issues. / Master of Science

The Effect of Interpersonal Skills Training on the Self-Concept and Personal Problems of Adolescent Males

This study undertook to determine of teaching interpersonal skills to adolescents who were already manifesting dysfunctional behavior would increase their self-concepts and decrease their personal problems. Of further interest to this study was whether or not once trained, the experience of utilizing these skills in a structured setting would further increase their self concepts and decrease their personal problems. Fifteen adolescent males who were residing in a residential center for children in need of supervision were randomly assigned to one of three experimental groups. The Piers-Harris Children's Self Concept Scale and the Mooney Problem Checklists - Junior High Form, were administered to all three groups prior to involving two of the groups in an interpersonal skills training program, after the interpersonal skills training program, and after the field experience. A peer facilitation program, Caring and sharing: Becoming a peer facilitator (Myrick & Erney, 1978) was utilized to teach subjects interpersonal skills twice a week for four weeks. At the conclusion of the interpersonal skills training program, half of the participants in the training group planned and presented affective activities in a fourth grade classroom and facilitated small group discussions twice a week for two weeks. No significant results were found on the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale for either the interpersonal skills training only group or the interpersonal skills training plus field experience group. However, subjects who participated in the interpersonal skills training group plus the field experience utilizing these skills reported significantly less personal problems on the Hone and Family Scale and the Boy and Girl Relations Scale of the Mooney Problems Checklist - Junior High Form then did the interpersonal skills training only group and the control group (p< .05). Thus, it appears from this study that interpersonal skills training alone does not have an effect on the self concept or personal problems of troubled adolescent males nor does the opportunity to utilize these skills in a field experience influence their self concepts. However, it does appear that training troubled adolescent males in interpersonal skills and giving them the opportunity to utilize these skills in a field experience does have some impact on their perception of their personal problems.

The role of emotional intelligence in the adaptation of adolescent boys in a private school

The lack of emotional intelligence can be linked to problem behaviour in adolescent boys between 14 and 18 years of age. The concepts of emotions, emotional intelligence, adolescents and adaptation formed the focal point of this research. Profiles were compiled from data obtained from the Q-metrics emotional intelligence questionnaire, the Sacks Sentence Completion Test, an unstructured interview and the projection media (Draw a person). Detailed information with regards to risk and protective factors for each adolescent boy were provided. The above techniques and measuring instruments provided a holistic picture of the adolescent's level of emotional functioning as well as hypotheses for future therapy. The importance of the father-son relationship in the adolescent years was stressed. Early identification of adolescent boys in a private school (with low levels of emotional development) enables the school to implement programmes aimed at developing emotional intelligence. / Educational Studies / M. Tramping: alternatives to traditional American rites of passage

In America today, adolescent boys do not have a structured, ritualized or guided passage From boyhood into manhood. Many young men feel unsure of their manhood even at an age that signifies the transition. This causes young males to need a self--‐created rite of passage. Tramping, the act of travelling by train, hitchhiking or foot, is one way in which young males can independently achieve manhood. This is a literary account of the lives of Jack Kerouac, Chris McCandless, and Zebu Recchia. Their personal stories allow a detailed view of the advantages and disadvantages found in a self--‐created rite of passage. While two of the accounts are successful, in Chris McCandless’s case the rite ends in a transition to death.Tramping as a rite of passage to adulthood seems effective but the danger in self--‐ creation appears to be the lack of guidance that comes in unstructured rites of passage. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013.

Prevalence of depression among adolescent males in residential treatment

Examines the prevalence of depression among delinquent adolescent boys placed in a residential placement facility located in Yucaipa, California and managed by Trinity Children and Family Services, a non-profit organization. The Beck Depression Inventory was administered to 54 randomly selected boys (ages 12-18) of different ethnic backgrounds. Independent variables included length of time in the group home, the level of support from the family and the number of visitations the client received from family or other support systems. Results indicated that (1) White adolescents experience the highest levels of depression, (2) there was no difference in regards to depression in relation to age, and (3) that time in placement and the amount of family involvement had an impact on the level of depression of the adolescent.

The influence of the family and school in the development of the boy child’s behavioural conduct

Family and school contexts have always been pivotal for shaping children’s behavioural conduct. They are associated with a laboratory where children are expected to learn about freedom, safety, socialisation and good behaviour. A family context lacking the provision of safety, security, love and happiness is tantamount to encouraging negative behaviour to children. The researcher utilized a qualitative research approach and gathered data by conducting face to face interviews with participants likely to inform the study. The researcher also utilized the purposive sampling technique to assemble a sample. Eight steps for qualitative data analysis as proposed by Tesch in Creswell (2009:186) were utilized for data analysis. Criteria for developing the trustworthiness of a qualitative inquiry as outlined by Lincoln and Guba (in Polit & Beck, 2008:539) were also used. The findings reveal that teacher-learner relationships in schools seem to play an important role in the development of behavioural conduct among learners. Learners who have close relationship with teachers appear to demonstrate social and academic competence at school in comparison with learners with distant relationship with teachers. Furthermore, strong family relationships were found to protect children from poor behavioural outcomes, whereas conflictual parentchild relationships and sibling rivalry interfered with children’s social relationships. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Work)

Constructions of masculinity and masculine identities among male adolescent rugby players.

This study explored the negotiation of masculine identities among male adolescent rugby players within South Africa, using the brief of "What it means to be a young man in South Africa today". Of particular interest was the way in which young men engaged with concepts of hegemonic masculinity and how they positioned their own and others' gender identities in relation to this. A total of 14 adolescent boys participated in two focus groups with the topic of masculinity as a discussion point. The research was situated within a qualitative research paradigm which allowed for the exploration, description and interpretation of the data generated during the focus groups. Two focus groups were held, with 10 and 4 participants in each group respectively. The focus group discussions were recorded and transcribed verbatim. The data was analysed using a critical thematic analysis, in order to establish central themes within the data. Four prominent themes were indentified: the male body; aspirational role models; engagement and interaction with the feminine; and negotiation of alternative masculinities. Each theme was discussed and expanded on using appropriate theory. The study highlights how the young men actively engaged with the negotiation of their gendered identities, raising critical questions regarding the acceptance of many hegemonic or dominant forms of expression of masculinity. It was also noted that while there was engagement and debate surrounding the construction of gender identities, a rather conventional hegemonic form of masculinity was still largely regarded as the ideal. An interesting finding in the study was that while many of the young men prized a more hegemonic conception of masculinity, alternative forms were engaged and identified with, and at times were incorporated into a more fluid understanding and expression of gender identity.

A Dissertation on African American Male Youth Violence: "Trying to Kill the Part of You that Isn’t Loved"

This dissertation is based on Sociocultural Theory, Social Learning Theory and Trauma Theory, as well as a new theoretical framework (Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome) which takes into account multigenerational trauma. Five research questions involving independent variables believed to predict violent behavior in African American male youth were investigated. The first three questions addressed stressors experienced by African Americans: violence witnessing, violence victimization, and daily urban hassles. The fourth and fifth questions concerned the sociocultural characteristics of racial socialization and prosocial attitudes toward respect. Participants were 200 African American male youth residing in inner Northeast Portland, Oregon who were recruited from four organizations: The Portland House of Umoja residential facility, McLaren Youth Correctional Facility, Donald E. Long Youth Correctional Facility and the Bridge Builders Gentlemen's Rites of Passage Program. The study included two groups of African American male youth ages 14 to 18, 100 of whom were incarcerated and 100 of whom were non-incarcerated. All five independent variables significantly predicted use of violence in separate regression equations. Multiple regression analyses revealed that the strongest predictor of the use of violence was victimization extent which alone accounted for 43.3% of the total variance in use of violence. In the second step of the regression, witnessing was added to the equation which increased the explained variance to 49.2%. The third and final step added prosocial attitudes toward respect to the regression accounting for a total of 51.2% of the variance of the extent of the use of violence. Variables excluded from the final regression equation were racial socialization and urban hassles which failed to significantly increase the prediction of the criterion variable of extent of use of violence. The data provide evidence that trauma characteristics of absent mothers, witnessing violence, experiencing violence, and feeling disrespected by others are key factors that can provide practitioners a better lens to use in assessment and treatment planning than the current response of punishment and incarceration for displays of violent behavior.
