Terminology usage in Setswana radio and television: comparative study of translations

Masasanya, Boetie Donald 16 November 2006 (has links)
Student Number : 9311414P - MA research report - School of Literature and Language Studies - Faculty of Humanities / This research report compares the translations of terminology used by radio and television to designate specific concepts. It examines the different strategies adopted by television in the translation of specific terms on the one hand and compares them with those adopted by radio and other. Terms are grouped into two categories; (1) phrasal terms in the source language and (2) established words in the source language. The study examines the semantic shifts in meaning in the translation versions of each of the terms discussed. In studying the patterns of term formation adopted my media, the study focuses on the three approaches by Sager (1990) in the creation of new designations. The first focuses on the use of existing resources, the second on the modification of resources and the third on the creation of totally new linguistic entities. The study challenges the theoretical terminological principle that one designation corresponds to one concept and uses television and radio translations to substantiate this argument. The research is qualitative and does not make any general conclusion about term usage on radio and television. It does however compare the strategies employed by each medium and makes certain recommendations concerning future translations on radio and television.

Uso de termos personificadores por professores de química: uma análise qualitativa / Use of personifying terms by chemistry teachers: a qualitative analysis

Andrade, Lucia Machado de 24 November 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of personifying terms by high school chemistry teachers, giving emphasis to the type of use - conscious or unconscious, to the occurrence of each type - animism and anthropomorphism (literal, metaphoric and teleological), to the reasons and contexts which entail their use and to teachers\' conceptions related to their influence on teaching and learning. The project is structured in two parts: in the first, fifteen scripts for learning objects elaborated by a group of teachers (a total of thirty six teachers) who participated in the LabVirt project from \"Escola do Futuro - USP\" were analyzed. In the second part, the personifying terms detected on these scripts were used to elaborate a set of tasks and interviews (structured and semi-structured) which were used to analyze another group of six teachers. From these results, was possible to admit that the use of personifying terms is a common practice among these investigated teachers, although it happens unconsciously. This practice appears indistinctively between teachers with different academic profiles and experience. The recurrence of these terms is related to the abstraction of the concept studied. Behind, these teachers consider that the use of these terms helps in the teaching learning process. The metaphoric anthropomorphism is the most frequent term used. Besides that, the personifying terms were efficient analysis instruments to infer about the possible mental models of the teachers. These models were revealed by the use of the personifying terms in their respective expressed models. These results point to the fact that the unconscious use of the personifying terms impedes the autonomy of the teacher in terms of the influence of language about the teaching learning process.

Internetavtal : Hur kan de förändras så att användare läser dem? / Online user agreements : How can they be changed so that users will read them?

Smedberg, Rasmus January 2008 (has links)

Arabic collocations : implications for translations

Brashi, Abbas S., University of Western Sydney, College of Arts, Education and Social Sciences, School of Languages and Linguistics January 2005 (has links)
The subject of collocability has been a common concern among linguists, lexicographers, and language pedagogues recently. They find the linguistic aspect of collocation interesting, because words due not exist in isolation from other words in a language. They exist with other words. In every language, the vocabulary consists of single words and multi-word expressions. Collocations are among those multi-word expressions. The aim of this thesis is to characterize collocations in the Arabic language, to devise a classification of the semantic and the distributional patterns of collocations in the Arabic language and to examine the problems encountered in translating English collocations into Arabic. This will require an analysis of the collocational patterns in both English and Arabic, a classification of the translation outcomes, and therefore, types of errors adopted by translators, an indication of how frequent and significant each error is, and an analysis of the causes of each error. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

A cognitive approach to foreign-inspired Chinese terms

Li, Suogui, University of Western Sydney, College of Arts, School of Humanities and Languages January 2008 (has links)
This thesis has aimed to set out the classification and word production of foreign-inspired Chinese terms (FICT) within the language system of modern Chinese. FICT refers to a group of vocabulary items in Chinese as a recipient language, where formation is motivated by foreign entities or concepts and designated by some foreign words, but no established foreign elements are in fact transferred from the donor language. The thesis establishes a group of terms identified as a particular category of Chinese borrowings according to the motivation of word production, concerning human bodily perception and cognition experience of foreign entities or concepts. Chinese borrowing is categorized as four types: phonic loans, semantic loans, loan blends and FICT, based on the motivation of sound, form and meaning of foreign words, and sensory perception and cognition of foreign entities and concepts. Cognitive semantics, adopted as an approach in the thesis, is a study of mind and its relationship with embodied experience and culture. Employing language as a key methodological tool for uncovering conceptual organization and structure, this study explores the methods of FICT word production, such as sensory perceptual and metaphorical production in terms of principles of cognitive semantics within the Chinese language system. The various types of Chinese borrowings are analysed in terms of the theory of categorization, and FICT in particular are examined under the semantic model proposed here. It is hoped that the thesis is able to open a new approach to the investigation of Chinese loan words and the process of FICT word production within cognitive semantics. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Are the labor market conditions causing the terms of trade to deteriorate? : A statistical evaluation of the Prebisch- Singer hypothesis.

Cederlöf, Jonas January 2012 (has links)
The study examines to what extent weak labor unions and an abundance of labor have a negative effect on less developed countries terms of trade, as hypothesized by Hans Singer (1950) and Rául Prebisch (1950). Using a sample from panel data for 74 less developed countries during the period 1980 – 2010 in OLS-regressions with fixed effects, I find some evidence that weak labor unions and abundance of labor is negatively correlated with the terms of trade, which could be interpreted in favor of the Prebisch-Singer hypothesis. The marginal effect of an abundance of labor also appears to have less negative impact on the terms of trade as labor unions grow stronger.

Theoretical Terms And The Ontic Structural Realism

Kaya, Nevzat 01 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The main purpose of the present study is to show that scientific realism is still worth advocating despite its vulnerability in the face of anti-realist objections. For, it does not seem possible to &lsquo / do science&rsquo / without realist commitments. The second purpose of this study is to investigate the plausibility of the novel versions of realism in the sense that whether they can satisfactorily respond to the anti-realist objections. Regarding the main purpose, I try to show that theoretical terms are neither reducible to observables nor they can be dispensed with. Hence in scientific theories there always remains a metaphysical part. Regarding the second purpose I discuss ontic structural realism which holds the individualistic attributions responsible for the metaphysical parts in theories and suggests that non-individualistic interpretation of theoretical terms is possible. The legitimacy of Ontic structural realism&rsquo / s suggestion, as its advocates claim, lies within quantum facts.
