Sju barn lär sig läsa och skriva : Familjeliv och populärkultur i möte med förskola och skola / Seven children learn to read and write : Family life and popular culture in contact with preschool and primary school

Fast, Carina January 2007 (has links)
This thesis is an ethnographic study in which seven Swedish children from different social and cultural environments were followed over three years. The study began when the children were four years old. The main aim of this thesis is to investigate through what social and cul-tural practices seven children meet literacy events in their families. A second aim is to track informal and everyday literacy events which the children take part in or practice on their own. A further aim is to study the transition be-tween home, preschool, preschool class and primary school in order to de-termine to what extent and in what ways the children are allowed to use their previous experience with and knowledge of literacy. The results show that the children are socialised in practices rich in liter-acy events via their culture, traditions, language and religion. The children practise reading and writing in a number of contexts. This occurs long before the pupils have been exposed to formal education. In the work on this study, it has also become clear that the seven children, regardless of their cultural, language or socioeconomic background, share experiences and knowledge relating to popular culture and the media. The children have a common understanding of texts in the form of words, names, images and icons. The value of this knowledge and experience is often as-signed by the children themselves in their contact with other children. The seven children, in this study, come to preschool and primary school with a wealth of experience in literacies from their family lives. Some chil-dren are allowed to bring their experience to the classroom. For them, there is continuity between literacy practices at home and at school. Others are forced to leave their experience outside the classroom. What is common to all children is that their knowledge about literacy related to popular culture and the media has a low cultural value in instructional settings.

Text och meningsskapande : Analys av meningsskapandet i mötet mellan elev och lärobokstext i fysik

Ljung, Jenny January 2014 (has links)

Antikrikščioniškoji verbalinė agresija lietuviakalbės internetinės žiniasklaidos ribose: kryptys ir tendencijos / Anti-christian verbal aggression within the limits of lithuanian online media: trends and tendencies

Kilpys, Valdas 06 June 2014 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The spread (and expansion) of today’s information space has become a major challenge not only in terms of mutual communication. It also touches deep layers of faith and has other impacts on much deeper formations of human personality. Virtuality, as equivalent to unseen existence, slowly, but surely intrudes into human consciousness and changes a human being and his whole value system, including faith matters. In this context, studies are necessary, on the basis of which the main forms of aggression that arise from virtuality and are directed against faith could be identified. However, the performance of studies is inseparable from the necessity to identify “reference points”. Thus, the theoretical part of the paper focuses on the documents released by the Church, which are related with public communication measures, and distinguishes their ethical principles. According to the documents of the Magisterium of the Church, the main ethical principle prevails in all fields, genres and kinds of media: a human being and society is the objective and a measure of the use of public communication measures. Communication must serve a thorough human development and goodness. The research of the main trends of verbal aggression by impact on the congregation permits to make the following conclusion: verbal aggression is generally expressed indirectly by describing a “hero” by aggressive text author. Usually a churchman becomes a target. The intenseness of the impact of verbal... [to full text]

Short message service (sms) and loneliness in a group of adolescents / Gerda Mclachlan

Mclachlan, Gerda January 2006 (has links)
The aim of the research was to explore the relationship between the use of SMS communication by adolescents and their perceived feelings of loneliness. The SMS seems to be the new communication medium for young people as they are most comfortable with and enthusiastic about this technology and its applications. The adolescent stage is characterised by the building of own social networks, the definition of boundaries between themselves and parents, self-presentation constructed on a social stage in relation to others and characterised by the development of romantic attachments, feelings of anxiety, self-esteem development and maintenance which may result in feelings of isolation and loneliness. Loneliness can be defined as an emotional and cognitive reaction to having fewer and less satisfying relationships than one desires. This includes the absence or self-perceived absence of satisfying social relationships and the unpleasant experience that occurs when a person's network of social relations is deficient in some important way. The motivation for this research was to get insight into the relationship between the use of SMS communication and loneliness in the South African context. An internet search on the 13th February 2006 indicated that no research has yet been done on the relationship between the use of the SMS and loneliness of adolescents in South Africa. An availability sample was used. One hundred and seventeen Grade 11 and 12 learners from two schools in the North West Province participated in the research project. An explanatory cross-sectional survey design with features of qualitative data analysis was used in this investigation. Three methods were used to obtain data, namely the UCLA Loneliness Scale (Version 3), Satisfaction with Life Scale as well as a self-compiled questionnaire. After scoring the UCLA scale the researcher determined which of the participants had the highest level of loneliness and the lowest level of loneliness. Two groups were chosen, each consisting or 15 learners, according to the highest and lowest scores on the loneliness scale respectively. These two groups represented the top and bottom 14% of the sample. The data obtained from the self-compiled questionnaire and Satisfaction with Life scale were qualitatively compared. Analysis of the data indicated that there might be a relationship between the experience of loneliness and the following: gender; number of siblings; involvement in romantic relationships; amount of money spent on bill (financial constraints); quantity of SMS messages sent and received; need to stay in contact with friends over the weekend; reasons for sending SMS messages; feelings regarding sending or receiving SMS messages; feelings regarding no response to SMS messages; feeling with regard to not receiving SMS messages from a friend for a long time; initiating of friendships via cellphone and the SMS rather than face-to-face communication. Suggestions for future research projects were made. / Thesis (M.A. (Clinical Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007

Between Marxism and Postmodernism: Slavoj Zizek Doing the Impossible

Del Duca, Alexander M. 29 April 2013 (has links)
This work seeks to address the major texts of Slavoj Zizek using a reading methodology which treats political philosophy as a practice, rather than a series of logical propositions or claims of truth or falsity. Philosophy is herein understood as a field of relations among authors who occupy precise theoretical and political coordinates. Writing produces and reproduces an author's position within this field via the way in which an author communicates with his/her peers, draws on past concepts, and designs new ones. This paper argues that Zizek cannot usefully be grasped as a theorist attempting to provide positive political solutions or analyses, but rather as a 'negative' force who occupies an impossible position by attempting to negate his peers and popular contemporary theoretical concepts - Zizek wishes to create a new intellectual space where political possibilities can be rethought and rediscovered, and he does this in his texts by ephemerally occupying multiple positions only to displace them.

Discovering Dallapiccola's Suleika in the Goethe Lieder

Duff, Kaley M. V. 30 May 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores text-music relationships in Dallapiccola’s Goethe Lieder. Though the cycle is based on Goethe’s West-östlicher divan, it was Mann’s novel Joseph und seine Brüder that spurred its inception. This seven-song cycle revolves around Suleika, a character from the biblical love story of Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife. Dallapiccola set this text upon reading Mann’s novel, which stems from the same story; however, Mann portrayed the character of Suleika as a sympathetic lover rather than the traditional evil seductress. By conducting a thorough pitch structure analysis of each song, focusing in particular on motives, symmetry and aggregates, this thesis examines text-music relationships to demonstrate how Mann’s Suleika is musically represented. This thesis illustrates that Dallapiccola’s setting is a musical composite of both Goethe and Mann’s Suleikas and thus sheds new analytical and hermeneutic light on an important work by one of the twentieth-century’s most prominent serial composers.

Text Mining Supported Skill Monitoring - A Framework for Analyzing Job Announcements with Special Focus on Curriculum Planning and Spatial Applications

Ledermüller, Karl 18 August 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In our fast changing global village, the wealth of nations and the wealth of individuals are to some extent determined by a production factor which is called human capital. Nations are seen to be more competitive and therefore create a higher level of wealth if they have a better educated workforce. On an individual basis human capital, which is seen as ones skills and competencies, also define the success on the labor market. This success on the labor market generates individual wealth. The probability of an individual receiving a proper job is assumed to be higher, if the skills, competencies and signals of the employee reflect the skills, competencies and signals required at the job market. This dissertation wants to explore the required skills, competencies and signals by screening job announcements and analyze them via text mining techniques. (author's abstract) Part I chapter I gives an overview of relevant literature, which deals with the economic dimension of knowledge. Starting from the idea of the knowledge based economy the question: "What is useful knowledge?" is raised and discussed with the ideas of Mokyr (2005). These ideas form the framework of the heuristic model for job announcement based competence classification (see chapter: 2.5). This classification is the foundation of the first application of curricular investigation 8. To fill the framework with content, the historical development of the role of skills, competencies and signals is shortly discussed. Starting with the competence and skill dimension in the famous book "Wealth of Nations" from Smith (1868) the dissertation focuses on the 1960's where Schultz (1961) (re-) invented the idea of human capital and the importance of investing in this factor. Theodore W. Schultz received a nobel prize for his ideas. Additionally disparities and similarities according to the approaches of Bourdieu (2005) as a famous sociologist and nobel laureate Spence (1973) are disputed. Chapter 2 debates personal competence from an educational perspective. After discussing "What is educational quality" and "Who is interested in high quality education" it is argued, that employability seems to be important for all stakeholder groups. Basic concepts of employability skills and competencies are defined. Theory comparison in chapter 2.5 leads to a heuristic model for job announcement based competence classification. However, this model could be applied for different problems. Chapter 3 defines the role of the job announcements (and its contained skills and competencies) and critical assumptions which lie behind the analysis of job announcements. Part II explains the used methodology by explaining how the data were harvested from the internet (chapter 4). Data were pre- and post processed (chapter 5) and job announcements were connected with their regional origin (chapter 7). Part III shows two possible applications. The first application is a text mining based context analysis of financial related job announcements to help finding strategies to support curriculum planning focused on employability (see chapter 8). The second application shows (regional) credential inflation effects based on the core/periphery model of Krugman (1991) which are seen as an "adverse reaction" of the knowledge based economy idea (see chapter 9). Religion och vetenskap : En studie om tematiken religion och vetenskap samt dess gränsländer i gymnasieläromedel / Religion and science : A study of the themes of religion and science in high school textbooks.

Larsson, Kajsa January 2014 (has links)
The following essay aims to determine what textbooks and teaching media educators in the county of Västerbotten use when teaching the relation between religion and science. Based on educational science theory and through analyzes of factual texts, the teaching materials was examined to determine how much focus they put on the thematic of religion and science. The result shows how the different teaching materials affect this thematic differently. The main conclusion is therefore that students in Sweden could, depending on the teaching materials used in their education, be taught by different standards to reach the same requirements.

Personalized Medicine through Automatic Extraction of Information from Medical Texts

Frunza, Oana Magdalena 17 April 2012 (has links)
The wealth of medical-related information available today gives rise to a multidimensional source of knowledge. Research discoveries published in prestigious venues, electronic-health records data, discharge summaries, clinical notes, etc., all represent important medical information that can assist in the medical decision-making process. The challenge that comes with accessing and using such vast and diverse sources of data stands in the ability to distil and extract reliable and relevant information. Computer-based tools that use natural language processing and machine learning techniques have proven to help address such challenges. This current work proposes automatic reliable solutions for solving tasks that can help achieve a personalized-medicine, a medical practice that brings together general medical knowledge and case-specific medical information. Phenotypic medical observations, along with data coming from test results, are not enough when assessing and treating a medical case. Genetic, life-style, background and environmental data also need to be taken into account in the medical decision process. This thesis’s goal is to prove that natural language processing and machine learning techniques represent reliable solutions for solving important medical-related problems. From the numerous research problems that need to be answered when implementing personalized medicine, the scope of this thesis is restricted to four, as follows: 1. Automatic identification of obesity-related diseases by using only textual clinical data; 2. Automatic identification of relevant abstracts of published research to be used for building systematic reviews; 3. Automatic identification of gene functions based on textual data of published medical abstracts; 4. Automatic identification and classification of important medical relations between medical concepts in clinical and technical data. This thesis investigation on finding automatic solutions for achieving a personalized medicine through information identification and extraction focused on individual specific problems that can be later linked in a puzzle-building manner. A diverse representation technique that follows a divide-and-conquer methodological approach shows to be the most reliable solution for building automatic models that solve the above mentioned tasks. The methodologies that I propose are supported by in-depth research experiments and thorough discussions and conclusions.
