A Newly Commissioned Work for Cello, A Recording and Performance Practice Guide by Yu-Ting Tseng

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: The introduction of a new instrumental piece—specifically Taiwanese—into the cello repertoire is as exciting as it is important. Currently, the majority of works for cello and piano include predominantly Western compositions that is repeatedly taught and performed. Reflections, by Taiwanese composer Ming-Hsiu Yen (Ms. Yen) is a response to this saturation. It is a piece that is both demanding for the performers and entertaining for the audience. Brilliantly written by a composer who has intimate familiarity with both the cello and piano, it is highly suitable for scholarly study and performance. This document details ensemble issues, interpretative suggestions for both cellist and pianist, and general concepts about the music. The composer further adds to these concepts and suggestions. Reflections is a programmatic work comprised of four movements, each with a descriptive title: “Gear,” “Tears of the Angel,” “Spintop,” and “Transformation.” Because the composer’s intentions were driven by pictorial ideas and not by a formal harmonic structure, this paper concentrates on ensemble issues and interpretation less than harmonic analysis. Secondly, the project includes the premiere recording of Reflections, as performer by Yu-Ting Tseng, cellist, and Dr. Jeremy Peterman, pianist. This audio documentation provides other cellists and pianists the opportunity of hearing the piece as originally conceived by the composer, as an aid to their own future preparation of this work. This recording, combined with the interpretative analysis, will assist in bringing Reflections into the cello repertoire and public eye. / Dissertation/Thesis / Reflections Recording Movement I Gear / Reflections Recording Movement II Tears of the Angel / Reflections Recording Movement III Spintop / Reflections Recording Movement IV Transformation / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2016

Solving the Riddle of Alkan's Grande Sonate Op. 33 ‘Les quatre âges’: A Performance Guide and Programmatic Overview

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Charles-Valentin Alkan’s Grande Sonate Op. 33 ‘Les quatre âges’ is a unique four-movement work for piano solo that programmatically represents a man’s life through four decades, passing from age 20 to 50, with each movement being progressively slower than the previous. Published in 1847, it was destined for obscurity until it was rediscovered and premiered in 1973 by English pianist Ronald Smith. Its absence from the public’s reach can be attributed to multiple reasons including the reclusive nature of the composer during the time of composition and the societal issues surrounding the French Revolution of 1848. Much of Alkan’s music has a reputation for being nearly unplayable because of its complexity and the extremely high level of technical facility a pianist must possess in order to perform it convincingly. Aside from its performance length of nearly an hour, there are many technical issues that prevent Alkan’s Grande Sonate from being performed more frequently. This paper is an exploration of some of these performance and technical issues for consideration by pianists interested in solving the riddle of performing Alkan’s Grande Sonate. The findings explored are based in part on the author’s experience in performing the complete Grande Sonate in recital, as well as on extant research into Alkan’s life and the interpretation and performance of his works. The paper concludes with an appendix and link to the author’s live performance of the work, another appendix renotating the fugato from Quasi-Faust, and a third appendix providing extensive fingering and voice redistribution for Les enfans [sic] from 40 ans. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2018

A avaliação considerou o aspecto técnico, lúdico, didático e pedagógico do Guia Didático. / This paper presents the gains and contributions of a Roleplaying Game (RPG) to chemistry teaching, presented as a Teaching Guide. While playing RPG, each player undertakes a character role in a fantastic adventure. One of the players assumes the role of Game Master (GM), who holds a unique and special role among all in the team. The GM describes the scenes and follows the plot. The players then, act according to their characters, interfering and building up the history. Researched in Brazil as a pedagogical tool since the 90s, Marcatto (1996) e Schmit (2008) point out the RPG as pedagogic capable of develop a number of skills among its players. Cavalcanti (2009) reports success of its use in natural sciences teaching. With this foundation in mind, a research was done over the literature to create a database of scientific papers and physical books, concomitantly to an analysis of the works regarding the contributions of the RPG in teaching. Later on, it was carried out a research on free RPG materials and game systems, as well as basic concepts for storytelling and plot build focused on construction of chemical concepts. The result of this research indicated that major parts of RPG game masters are the researchers themselves, who already has some experience with the game. Then, it was produced an educational product containing an adventure, an adapted system of rules and information concerning how to drive a RPG game for Chemistry teachers who have no experience with the game itself. After undergoing tests, the educational product became a Teaching Guide, called "Na Trilha da Aventura: Ensinando e Aprendendo Química com RPG". It was rated by experienced players of RPGs, members of Programa Institucional de Bolsa de Iniciação à Docência (PIBID) Interdisciplinar em Ciências naturais e Matemática and teachers of the Centro de Formação e Atualização dos Profissionais da Educação Básica – Cefapro. The evaluation found the technical aspect, playful, didactic and pedagogical of the Teaching Guide. The evaluation results were positive, demonstrating that the guide prepares the teacher to use the RPG in his classes. It helps to create your own adventures, provides subsidies so that the teacher who never had experience with RPG may teach the by playing the proposed adventure, allowing the teacher to add other chemistry concepts and adapt the proposed challenges according to their realities.

Kan du le på bilden eller slicka dig på fingret? : En studie om kockens roll i branschen och media. / Kan du le på bilden eller slicka dig på fingret? : En studie om kockens roll i branschen och media.

Söderlund, Moa, Lundqvist, Ida January 2018 (has links)
Abstract The purpose of the study was to investigate the professional chef, the road to success as well as to highlight which factors affects success. This study incorporated both a qualitative content analysis and qualitative interviews. Consequently to broaden the understanding of the affect in success of chef’s as well as media's influence. Results show a correlation between the informants perception on what requires to succeed in becoming a great cook. Hard work, extended knowledge and high commitment. The lack of leadership skills is believed to be the highest of priority for the industry to evolve in. Pressed media turns out to have a stereotypic angle when publicating articles of both male and female cooks as well as White guide that assesses the quality of these operations. Conclusively media has a large impact on the road to success of the professional chefs and how they are portaitet to the public eye. There seems to be a great difference in how female and male chefs appears in the pressed media. Further there are indications that organisations baring the judgement and quality assurance of the restaurant industry in part with the media glorifies the industry. Lastly there are apparent flaws who needs to be adjusted in the industry to ensure more hirings and meet the market in addition to the younger generation chefs higher demands. The younger generation has an extended awareness considering their terms and conditions. To improve the industry leadership skills, hiring terms and an increase in standard and quality needs to be reconstructed.       Keywords: Cook, influence of the media, restaurant industry, white guide
