Olebjörk, Karin January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this report is to highlight customers' problems in finding the right size when shopping for clothes in an online store. The focus area is to investigate whether it is possible for customers to take accurate body measurements or garment measurements with a measuring tape in order to select appropriate clothing size in e-commerce.   A market investigation on the internet was conducted to find out how clothing companies design their size guides. Then a study took place with 20 participant soldiers. They were asked to follow the instructions for taking body measurements of themselves, to take measurements of each other and to measure two selected garments. Finally, they where measured by a garment technologist. The result showed a very large difference, and several of the measures had a span from -6 cm to +6 cm. One finding was that some measurement results were improved when someone else than themselves performed the body measuring. Afterwards the participants were asked to answer a few questions. Around 60 % of the them believed that a film instruction could facilitate the body measuring. The conclusion is that it is important to inform the customers in the size guide that it is important to get help to get as accurate measurements as possible and that an instructional film can facilitate the measuring. A complement to body measurements can be garments measurements in the size guide.

Kaufmann, Cristine January 2016 (has links)
Sustainability in complex sense, presents itself as one of the greatest challenges facing humanity, and organizational communication a place of its construction and legitimation. Under this view, with the theoretical and epistemic lens, the Paradigm of Complexity, according to Morin (2006, 2008, 2011, 2013), with this research we aim to understand what perspective (s) theoretical-philosophical (s) about sustainability is (are) guiding practices in contemporary organizations. The study of the subject are the appropriation of the concept of sustainability in / by organizational communication, specifically in the context of "communicated organization" (BALDISSERA, 2009a), which is the size of the official speeches, where organizations propose qualified pictures of themselves in perspective of "discursive ethos" (MAINGUENEAU, 2008). Our research object are produced sustainability senses and offered the organizational discourse, specifically, that materialized in the Exame Sustainability Guide (GES) and institutional sites of companies awarded by the GES. We believe that these are directions institution places, because that these are discursive materialization guided by the intention to communicate and to recognize (institute, as Bourdieu (1996)) certain sense of sustainability. The theoretical and methodological path articulate notions of discourse analysis, the main north reflections of Foucault (2006, 2012), Pêcheux ([88]2009), Orlandi (2009) and Maingueneau (1998, 2001, 2008, 2013). During the review process, we switch-also the systematization proposed by Baldissera (2009b) of the role of sustainability in the culture: 1) central value; 2) peripheral value and / or market strategy; 3) non-value, negative and / or fad; and 4) extrassistema value.

ABSTRACT Reflect on the person with deafblindness and especially the care directed to the deafblind in the social and educational context, constitutes an academic need, whether on produação of theoretical knowledge on the practical interventions. This issue sets the paths taken by this Doctoral Thesis in order to investigate the performance of professional guide-interpreter in caring for people with deafblindness in the city of Salvador, Bahia, identifying intervention procedures used by professionals from the communicative practices with deafblind and caracterizan factors and aspects that interfere with their professional work as mediators for the socialization of deafblind. From the socio-interactionist theoretical constribuições presented by Vygosty (2007) This work charted their thoughts, realizing that the relationship of the subject deafblind with the environment, an essential factor for the development of individuals, as well as presents Amaral (2002), Dorado (2004), Maya (2004), Cader-Birth (2007), Galvão (2010) and others to understand the forms of communication developed between professionals and deafblind and the dynamics of your atentimento in social spaces. The methodological choice defines a way of case study, and from research tools interviews and direct observation will allow the analysis of the lack of information and expertise on disability as a factor in the emergence of structural barriers, programmatic, attitudinal, architectural, which affect both the quality of services to deafblind, the social reality of this individual, thus providing an exclusive and segregation reality

Propagation en guide d'onde large : mesure par antennerie microphonique de la réflexion multimodale pour différentes extrémités / Acoustic propagation in wide guides : measurements by microphone arrays of multimodal reflection for different terminations

Qiu, Zhiping 29 September 2017 (has links)
The experimental study of multimodal propagation and radiation in a wide guide is proposed via measurements of the reflection of modes for different terminations by using microphone arrays. The experimental bench consists of a wide guide closed at one end and ended with different terminations at the other end; an acoustic source and two microphone arrays are flush-mounted to the wall of the guide. Each component of the bench is first studied to improve the measurement results. A method of verifying the performance of the loudspeakers constituting the acoustic source and a method of controlling the acoustic source are proposed in order to facilitate the generation of the different modes of propagation of the wave. An in-situ calibration method for the microphone array is developed for the different modes. A calculation of the uncertainties for the estimation of the reflection coefficient is proposed. Then, measurements are performed for different guide terminations: with a finite flange, without flange, and with an infinite flange. The measurement of the reflection for the different modes consists of applying the method of two microphones to the signals from the modal decomposition obtained by means of two microphone arrays. Results of measurements for the plane mode are satisfactorily compared with theoretical results from the literature. Results for the first higher modes show the ability of the system to extract the reflection coefficient in modulus and in phase with sufficient precision to distinguish the effect of the radiation condition.

Impact of Forecasted Freight Trends on Highway Pavement Infrastructure

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: The major challenge for any pavement is the freight transport carried by the structure. This challenge is expected to increase in the coming years as freight movements are projected to grow and because these movements account for most of the load related distresses for the pavement. Substantial effort has been devoted to identifying the impacts of these future national freight trends with respect to the environment, economic growth, congestion, and reliability. These are all important aspects relating to the freight question, but an equally important and often overlooked aspect of this issue involves the impact of freight trends on the physical infrastructure. This study analyzes the impact of future freight traffic trends on 26 major interstates representing 68% of the total system mileage and carrying 80% of the total national roadway freight. The pavement segments were analyzed using the Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide software after collecting the relevant traffic, climate, structural, and material properties. Comparisons were drawn between the expected pavement performance using current design standards for traffic growth and performance predictions that incorporated more detailed freight projections which themselves considered job growth and six key drivers of freight movement. The differences in the resultant performance were used to generate maps that provide a bird’s eye view of locations that are especially vulnerable to future trends in freight movement. The analysis shows that the areas of greatest vulnerability include segments that are directly linked to the busiest ports, and surprisingly those from Atlantic and Central states that provide long distance connectivity, but do not currently carry the highest traffic volumes. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Civil and Environmental Engineering 2016

Using Instructional Design and Cognitive Load Management Theories to Improve the Efficiency of a Video-Based College Algebra Learning Environment Through a Note-Taking Guide and Learner Control

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: The problem under investigation was to determine if a specific outline-style learning guide, called a Learning Agenda (LA), can improve a college algebra learning environment and if learner control can reduce the cognitive effort associated with note-taking in this instance. The 192 participants were volunteers from 47 different college algebra and pre-calculus classes at a community college in the southwestern United States. The approximate demographics of this college as of the academic year 2016 – 2017 are as follows: 53% women, 47% men; 61% ages 24 and under, 39% 25 and over; 43% Hispanic/Latino, 40% White, 7% other. Participants listened to an approximately 9-minute video lecture on solving a logarithmic equation. There were four dependent variables: encoding as measured by a posttest – pretest difference, perceived cognitive effort, attitude, and notes-quality/quantity. The perceived cognitive effort was measured by a self-reported questionnaire. The attitude was measured by an attitude survey. The note-quality/quantity measure included three sub-measures: expected mathematical expressions, expected phrases, and a total word count. There were two independent factors: note-taking method and learner control. The note-taking method had three levels: the Learning Agenda (LA), unguided note-taking (Usual), and no notes taken. The learner control factor had two levels: pausing allowed and pausing not allowed. The LA resulted in significantly improved notes on all three sub-measures (adjusted R2 = .298). There was a significant main effect of learner control on perceived cognitive effort with higher perceived cognitive effort occurring when pausing was not allowed and notes were taken. There was a significant interaction effect of the two factors on the attitude survey measure. The trend toward an improved attitude in both of the note-taking levels of the note-taking factor when pause was allowed was reversed in the no notes level when pausing was allowed. While significant encoding did occur as measured by the posttest – pretest difference (Cohen’s d = 1.81), this measure did not reliably vary across the levels of either the note-taking method factor or the learner control factor in this study. Interpretations were in terms of cognitive load management, split-attention, instructional design, and note-taking as a sense-making opportunity. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Educational Technology 2018

This research aims to identify the importance and benefits of a study routine focused on sonority in wind instruments. The objective of that kind of study is to obtain better performance development and could be adopted by saxophonists and other wind players as well. The investigation also found out the origins of sonority techniques, notably the ones related to the breathing process. The research method concentrates on describing the pedagogical sonority workbook developed by this researcher; reviewing workbooks and handbooks that target wind musicians, especially saxophonists; finding theoretical basis encompassing questions related to breathing process and air emission; conducting an action research with students from Escola Municipal de Música; and interviewing professional musicians, both popular and classical, to verify their knowledge regarding study practices, breathing information and sound emission. That allowed me to delineate a general perspective regarding the comprehension by musicians and instructors and the approach given by book authors to sonority studies—it is worth mentioning that musicians and instructors participants in this study are mainly from São Paulo. The results show that breathing techniques used by wind performers originate from singing techniques. Additionally, results demonstrate that the adoption of the practice dedicated to sonority development offers benefits to the practioner, as volume enhancement and timbre uniformity through all instrument regions. This dissertation includes, besides Introduction and Final Conclusions, four chapters that describe simultaneously the pedagogy applied by this researcher in studying sonority, the theoretical foundation of the research, the action research and the results discussion.
