Desenvolvimento e análise da eficácia de guia cirúrgico paciente-específico produzido por impressão 3D para aplicação de pinos transarticulares atlantoaxiais em cães miniatura / Development and efficacy assessment of a patientspecific 3d-printed surgical guide for implantation of atlantoaxial transarticular pin fixation in miniature dogs

Monteiro, Bianca Fiuza 07 June 2018 (has links)
The atlantoaxial subluxation in miniature dogs leads to spinal cord compression and cervical myelopathy in several degrees. Commonly the surgical treatment is necessary, and one of therapeutic options are the transarticular fixation. Conventionally the passage of these implants is based on anatomical reference points and generics pre-established angles, however, due to the narrow bony corridor the ideal positioning is challenging. The development of individual surgical planning methods could improve the accuracy of atlantoaxial implants application. The present study aimed to develop a patient-specific surgical guide (PSSG) for placement of atlantoaxial pins in miniature dogs and to compare the efficacy of these devices related to the conventional surgical technique. Sixteen cadavers of dogs, up to six kilograms, were randomly placed in two groups of eight dogs each, to undergo atlantoaxial transarticular stabilization with Kirschner wires. On the Group A (GrA) the application of Kirschner wire were guided by a PSSG, developed based on computed tomography (CT) images, using rapid prototyping and fused deposition modeling 3D impression technique. The dogs of Group B (GrB) were submitted to conventional procedure, with the passage of the Kirschner wires guided by anatomical references. After surgeries, dogs in both groups were submitted to a CT scan to evaluate the accuracy of the implants. To evaluate the implants position a scale was created and considered the maintenance of the pins in the safe corridors and classified them according to the stability and safety of the application. It was observed that there was no significant difference between the PSSG method and the conventional surgery, and that both groups had expressive results of inappropriately applied pins, including obliteration of vertebral foramen in 3 (37.5%) dogs from GrA and 4 (50%) dogs from GrB and obliteration of the transverse foramen in 3 (37.5%) dogs from GrA and 1 (12, 5%) dog of GrB. The bilaterally application of pins in a suitable position was observed in only 2 (25%) dogs of each group. We concluded that the development of a PSSG for transarticular pins in miniature dogs is feasible, however, the model that we design was not able to increase the efficacy and safety of the surgery, compared to the conventional surgical technique.

Movimentação de bovinos no Mato Grosso do Sul e implicações econômicas de potenciais surtos de febre aftosa / Bovine cattle movement in Mato Grosso do Sul state and economic implications of potential outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease

Menezes, Taís Cristina de 12 July 2018 (has links)
This work seeks to analyze the economic dynamics of cattle flows in Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) state and to identify their geographic distribution within the state. Given that sanitary and technical barriers are currently some of the main obstacles to international trade, knowledge about the characteristics of this dynamics and the identification of central municipalities in terms of livestock flows allow analyzing the diffusion process of the foot-and-mouth disease in MS in a possible outbreak. In this way, the municipalities with the greatest risk of occurrence and potential economic impacts were identified. The applied methodology consists on socioeconomic network analysis, constructed from the Animal Transit Guides registered in MS in 2014 and 2015. The cattle movement within MS produces heavily connected networks, which could result in a high-speed dissemination of the disease in the territory. The municipalities of Campo Grande, Corumbá and Ribas do Rio Pardo were the most central in this process, since they receive and send many animals to other municipalities, besides acting as intermediaries of animal flows within the movement networks. Due to the supply of animals to other states, the diffusion can occur at a national level, raising the economic impacts of an outbreak. In this sense, the export losses and the costs of emergence to control last FMD outubreak in MS, in 2005/2006, were estimated. The State exports declined 81% in 2006, compared to the previous year. Considering the theoretical model of simulation and the costs and losses estimated for the last outbreak, we conclude that a potential diffusion of the FMD, originating in MS, might generate significant direct impacts on livestock. This conclusion highlights how essential it is to promote studies about the impacts and risks of the FMD entry and diffusion in Brazil, in order to optimize the allocation of resources to prevention strategies and, in case of an outbreak, to implement the Emergency Plan.

"Estudo colorimétrico da translucidez de materiais restauradores odontológicos" / Colorimetric Study of the translucency of restorative odontologic materials.

Goveia, Jane Cleide 07 April 2005 (has links)
When an anterior tooth is restorated, the whole remaining tissue protection technique and functional recuperation of the dental element can be compromised if the choice of the color of the restorative material is not adequate. The familiarity with the color and light interaction with matter theories may help with the task of choosing the restorative material shade. The challenge in searching for an ideal restorative material in its esthetic function was always obtaining the proper translucency of dental enamel. However, this translucency makes the restorative material suffer an influence of the background color, which can be the protection material color or, more commonly, the dentine color. Concerning the odontologic esthetic restorative activities, it was possible to conclude from this work that: 1) Colorimetry can be an important way for the selection and communication of the restorative material shades; 2) The results show that the background color has a large influence on the final color of the restoration; and 3) The shade guides must be reformulated so that it take into consideration the thickness of the restorative material and background color.

O ato de comer, a comensalidade, e a classificação NOVA de alimentos nas recomendações do Guia Alimentar para a População Brasileira: contribuições da pesquisa qualitativa / The act of eating, the commensality and the NOVA food classification in the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for the Brazilian Population: contributions of the qualitative research

Menegassi, Bruna 02 March 2018 (has links)
Introduction - The second edition of the Dietary Guidelines for the Brazilian Population gained prominence in the national and international media by presenting some of its recommendations based on the NOVA food classification as well as on the act of eating and commensality. Objective - Understand what Brazilian adults think and do about the recommendation eating regularly and carefully, in appropriate environments and in company and know what they think about the classification NOVA. Methods - In this crosssectional qualitative research we selected a sample of teachers, administrative technicians and students (n = 24) from the Federal University of Grande Dourados, Brazil. We conducted a semi-structured interview and two food classification activities also guided by interview. In the first activity, using the pile sort method, the participants were asked to freely classify 24 pictures of food (sourced from examples of the four food groups specified in the NOVA) into food groups meaningful to them; in the second, it was proposed that they classify the same foods according to the names of the groups of the NOVA, given to them on a paper card. We analyzed the interviews by content analysis; the data of the first classification activity by multidimensional scaling followed by cluster hierarchical analysis; and the data of second classification activity by multidimensional scaling. Results - Participants in this study had an average age of 30 years (± 9.4 years). Some participants understand eating regularly as time to eat; and eating carefully as without distraction, eat slowly and pay attention to body signals. Others understand eating regularly as balance and proper quantity; and eating carefully as to observe the characteristics of food and the quantity of food. Most participants understand the appropriate enviroments to eat as eat at the table, enjoyable place, without interference and clean place. Regarding eating in company, the theme good was the most recurring, but the themes I prefer alone and indifferent also emerged in the analysis. The analysis of the free classification activity resulted in six clusters, of which two related to contrasting themes, such as real food and junk foods, meals and ready-made foods, healthy foods and unhealthy foods, consumed foods and restricted foods. The NOVA is understood by the participants in terms of processing, production and chemicals. The foods of the groups in natura or minimally processed and ultraprocessed were understood by the majority of participants as belonging to such groups; already the foods of the groups of culinary ingredients and processed foods were among their doubts regarding the classification NOVA. Conclusions - The participants\' thoughts about \"eating and commensality\" are reflected in some of their practices and conform, with the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines; their understandings of the NOVA classification are in line with what it wants to communicate. These are the first steps for the Dietary Guideline to succeed with its recommendations. These results can be used by Brazilian researchers in order to optimize the communication between the recommendations of the Guide and the target community for which they are intended; and researchers from other countries to improve the recommendations of their food guides.

An investigation into the south african correctional officers’ lived experiences of their work and the employee assistance programme and meaning thereof

Willemse, Rachel Philliphina 02 1900 (has links)
Correctional officers work in a coercive environment and as such they are confronted with various challenges on a daily basis. Research found that the unique stressors that correctional officers experience result in stress which can negatively impact their physical and psychological health as well as their family life. However, limited research has been conducted to identify the stressors that are relevant to the South African correctional officer. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate South African correctional officers’ lived experiences of their work and work environment and the Employee Assistance Programme and the meaning they attached to them. Purposive and snowball sampling techniques were utilised to select the 20 participants from the two correctional centres of the Department of Correctional Services in Worcester, Western Cape. The sample consisted of 11 male and 9 female correctional officers between the ages of 26 and 56 years with a mean age of 43.4. A qualitative approach was utilised to obtain in-depth insights into the lived experiences and attributed meanings of participants. Individual interviews were conducted with the participants by utilising a semi-structured interview guide. A demographic questionnaire was completed by each participant after the interview. The interviews were audio-recorded with the written permission of each participant and transcribed for analysis. Through the use of Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) 7 themes were identified namely: (a) confronting various challenges on a daily basis (b) various dimensions of correctional officers life affected (c) neglect of correctional officers’ well-being (d) coping mechanisms (e) barriers preventing corrections officers from utilising the EAP (f) a recognition of the positive value of the EAP (g) personal meaning derived from work. In addition, the themes consist of various subthemes. The findings of the study suggest that correctional officers are confronted with various challenges on a daily basis, which include lack of input into decision making, lack of support from management, lack of trust in management, pressure caused by staff shortages, lack of resources, inadequate training opportunities and a lack of promotion system. Furthermore, participants revealed that their work and work environment had a negative impact on their physical and psychological health as well as their family life. In addition, participants reported that aspects of their well-being are neglected which include a lack of interest from management in their problems, a lack of recognition and motivation from management as well as a lack of team-building opportunities. Various coping mechanisms were utilised by the participants which seems to act as a buffer against the negative effects of their stressful work and work environment. These coping mechanisms include conflict resolution and communication skills, religion, sport, positive thinking, resilience as well as family and co-worker support. A variety of barriers that prevent participants from using the EAP service that are offered at work were identified. These barriers indicated by the participants included a lack of trust in the EAP, the stigma attached to using the EAP, difficulty relating with the EAP practitioner, a negative perception of the EAP, and insufficient marketing of the EAP. Despite the barriers, participants recognised the overall positive value of the EAP service in the Department of Correctional Service. Participants appear to find meaning in their work. Some participants expressed the satisfaction that they experienced from their job while others expressed the sense of reward that they experience from their job. Recommendations for further research include the evaluation of the EAP programme to determine its effectiveness on a national level, more involvement from management in ground floor correctional officers, providing additional teambuilding oppertunities and reintroducing Wellness Days. A limitation of the study is that only a small sample of correctional officers limited to two correctional facilities in Worcester, Western Cape, was used. Therefore, the findings of the study could not be generalised to the whole population of South African correctional officers. / Psychology

A heuristic and HSSI exploration of experiencing interplay between spiritual guidance and synchronicity within person-centred encounters

Gorsedene, Christa January 2018 (has links)
This research has been a study in amazement. Initially an agnostic physics graduate, the researcher undertook training in the person-centred approach (pca) to self-development and counselling, during which she came to experience strange personal experiences which she could neither gainsay nor fit into her then worldview. Sketching these briefly, exceptional human experiences (EHEs) and synchronicities increasingly happened until (shockingly) they declared a seeming spirit guide (Mungo) to her, also juxtaposed in time with her first-ever chance encounter with dowsing. Thereafter these phenomena, combined with randomisable image-cards, tutored her into a physically observable method of 'discussion' with them (alone or with another) conducted with pca values. This PhD involved researching that phenomenon-complex through 'discussions' with 35 participants. The methodology used was heuristics and its heuristic self-search inquiry specialism (HSSI) whose attention to personal experiencing, indwelling to contact tacit knowledge, and incubatory rest phases to foster illuminatory new 'ahaa!' apprehensions suited this nascent mysterious subject. Both participants and researcher experienced coincidences weaving the 'discussions' and their wider lives together. Thus synchronicity became equal-partner research-topic, being studied as it occurred and, through affecting certain choices, becoming part of the methodology itself. The phenomenon-complex was experienced as fostering ethical living, creativity, personal development and science-spirituality interconnection in ways wellpitched and paced for each experiencer. The phenomena were also experienced as synergizing with each other, and as fostering integration within and between persons. After work on the participant sessions was completed, the writings of further thesis chapters were 'butted into' by in-the-moment relevant synchronicities, not just singly but in flows and patterns in which the researcher found herself discerning overarching meanings. Given this exceptional opportunity the researcher (in effect doing a bonus research-section) tracked her experiencing of these synchronistic flows and her responses thereto wherever they led, using Sela-Smith's first-person heuristic self-search inquiry (HSSI) methodology. Each synchronistically-influenced chapter was experienced as exploring certain themes, with themes building as the thesis progressed. Heuristics and HSSI are usually transformative. This researcher was transformed from the ground up from agnosticism to credence in 'something more' through her experiencings (both alone and inter-relationally with participants). Their 'package deal' presented personal shadow-work alongside help in life difficulties, and great fascination but darker times too. In total she came to feel part of an interconnected, spiritually-intelligent and compassionate cosmic domain, and existentially happier.

Propagation of atoms in a magnetic waveguide on a chip / Propagation d'atomes dans un guide magnétique sur puce

Bade, Satyanarayana 18 November 2016 (has links)
In this thesis we study the propagation of atoms in a magnetic toroidal waveguide, with the aim of developing an inertial sensor. Here, we present different strategies to create the waveguide on an atom chip for a guided Sagnac atom interferometer. We devised three solutions which can be achieved using the same wire configuration. They use the current modulation technique, from a new point of view, which simultaneously tackles the problem of wire corrugation and spin dependent Majorana atom losses. The effect of the multimode propagation of the atoms in the guide is also quantified in this thesis. Using a simple model, we covered the propagation of noninteracting ultracold and thermal gases. We identified the operating conditions to realize a cold atom interferometer with a large dynamic range essential for applications in inertial navigation. Experimentally, the thesis describes the realisation and characterisation of the cold atom source close to a gold coated substrate, as well as the implementation and the characterisation of the atom detection systems.

Epistemic Skills Deficiency in the Project Management Body of Knowledge

Hosch, Alex 01 January 2016 (has links)
Information Technology (IT) projects continue to fail despite being managed by certified Project Management Professionals (PMP) and professionally trained non-certified Project Managers (PM). This study addressed PMPs and qualified PMs who continue to experience IT project failure at a high rate. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore perspectives of PMs and their understanding of project management best practices in the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). There were 5 research questions focused on IT project failures, lessons learned, trends, deficiencies in project management framework, and adherence to standard PM practices. This study utilized a phenomenological approach and an inductive analysis based on Koskinen's theory that a lack of project management knowledge can contribute to project failure. Data were collected from open-ended interviews with 20 project managers; these data were then inductively coded and analyzed for themes and patterns. Findings yielded categories of poor scope management, cost overruns, unmanaged resources, un-realistic requirements, inadequate stakeholder management, and deficiencies in content in the PMBOK standards. The results could influence positive social change for PMs to assess the depth of project management training needed to understand early warning signs of IT project failure. These changes could promote awareness within the project management community and encourage more in-depth PM competency training.

Etude de composants passifs hyperfréquences à base de métamatériaux et de ferrite / Study of passive microwave and millimetre wave components based on matematerials and ferrite

Zhou, Tao 06 March 2012 (has links)
In this thesis we studied some passive components based on metamaterials. Our goal was to assess the physical properties of CRLH lines combined with a ferrite substrate. When the CRLH TLs are integrated with ferrite substrate, new properties based on the “CRLH” structure and nonreciprocity of ferrite can be obtained. Samples were processed on dielectric substrate (alumina) as well as on YIG substrate, according to fabrication steps which are described in this work. These samples have been characterized, in particular for the YIG substrate, with and without a magnetic polarization field. 3D Finite element simulation was used to get the scattering parameters. Lastly, dispersion diagrams were extracted from both measured and simulated data.We can get nonreciprocity by modeling the ferrite substrate, and “left-handed” property by modeling the structure of CRLH. The first chapter of this manuscript focus on theories of microwave transmission lines, coplanar waveguides, magnetic materials and metamaterials. In the second chapter, we designed and implemented conventional CPW components as well as stand-alone capacitors and inductors on alumina substrate. We completed the fabrication process in NANOLYON. Then the simulations in software COMSOL, and the analytical modelling approaches in Matlab are presented. The measured, simulated and analytical S parameters are given, the corresponding propagation constants of CPW, the extracted values of capacitance and inductance are given and discussed. The CPW components on ferrite are introduced in the third chapter. Firstly, different kinds of ferrite and the fabrication of components are presented. Then the modelling of permeability of ferrite material is detailed, and implemented in the 3D finite element simulation. The nonreciprocity is studied using CPW components based on ferrite BaM and YIG. For CPW on ferrite substrate, the measured and simulated S parameters, as well as propagation constant are given. In chapter four, the modelling of CRLH transmission line and the CRLH transmission line theory were presented. Examples of balanced and unbalanced CRLH TL are presented and the dispersion diagram is given. Then a parametric study of the components realized on alumina and on YIG has been driven. The geometric parameters were the left-handed inductances, left-handed capacitances and the length of the CPW separating them (CPW2). Both experimental and simulated scattering parameters are shown and the corresponding propagation constants are given. That enables to identify the different frequency bands: left-handed band, right-handed band and bandgap. Moreover, we establish that the band structure of these components can be tuned with the magnetic applied field.
