An experimental investigation of coloring matter in Canna Indica flowers

Vogt, James Clinton 01 January 1961 (has links)
The research was carried out for the purpose of isolating and identifying the coloring matter in flowers of the canna indica (canna lily) variety. It was done by extracting the pigment from flower petals with methanol, amyl alcohol, and other solvents, and crystallizing the pigment as a salt. Physical properties such as solubility, color reactions, spectra and others were examined for this pigment. Chemical properties and degradation products were also examined in order to identify the chemical structure of the pigment.

Rates of acidic hydrolysis of triptych boroxazolidines

Stump, Ronald Keith 01 January 1963 (has links)
Upon looking at the results of calculation of the rate constants given in Table 2, there are revealed some general trends as to the influence of the substituent groups on the values of the rate constants. If the rate constants of the reaction are considered at a fixed temperature, the rates of reaction in Group I decrease as the substituent is gradually changed from methyl to isopropyl. As soon as the substituent is changed from alkyl to an ether type, the rate of cleavage increases nearer to that of the parent compound again. The rate of cleavage of the nitrogen-boron bond for the third group increases very drastically, indicating that the halogen weakens the bond.

Certain differences in academic ability and achievement between credential and other students of the 1961 graduating class at the University of the Pacific

Stutzman, Carl Raymond 01 January 1963 (has links) (PDF)
In recent years the teaching profession has gained a position of unceasing public prominence which has brought with it increasing demands of professional competence. While the competencies demanded are many in number and varied in nature, the one which. is almost always asked for is that of the ability of the teacher to handle intellectual material. One measure of this ability is the degree of success which the teacher attained in his own academic endeavors while a student in a college or university. The Problem: This study compared the intellectual ability of liberal arts teacher credential candidates with liberal arts students who did not plan on a career in teaching. The problem was to determine the difference in academic ability and achievement between credential candidates and other liberal arts students who were granted the bachelor's degree on June 11, 1961, by the University of the Pacific.

An historical study of Hesperian College, Woodland, California, from 1861 to 1896

Clover, Haworth Alfred 01 January 1960 (has links) (PDF)
Today, one hundred years after the founding of this school, records, programs, catalogues, and other data concerning the school have become scattered throughout California. Data located in historical depositories are sparse and incomplete. Much information lies in the hands of private persons not known or available to the general public. From generation to generation it becomes increasingly difficult to locate data concerning earlier generations and often the data have been unknowingly destroyed. The main purpose for this project then, is to preserve knowledge of this early California school in a single source for the reference of future historians.

Mitochondrial DNA Diversity and its Determinants in the Southwest Pacific

James, Danielle Nicole January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine mitochondrial DNA variation in the Southwest Pacific and determine what factors contribute to the degree and patterning of the observed variation. Population variation is known to be influenced by factors including demographic history, natural selection, climate, isolation, island area/complexity, and population age, as older populations are generally more diverse. The groups compared are from three regions in the Southwest Pacific; (a) northeast New Guinea, (b) Manus in northern Island Melanesia and (c) Easter Island in eastern Polynesia. MtDNA surveys have revealed highly significant differences in molecular variance across these populations. According to traditional biogeographical theory, the likely determinants of these differences are (a) length of time since initial settlement, (b) the comparative isolation of particular islands or regions since settlement, and (c) the size and complexity of settlement areas. Evidence from archaeology and linguistics provides the necessary framework for the study. Detailed archaeological surveys for several of the study regions provides evidence for settlement dates as well as evidence for isolation and/or frequent contact with other areas, usually in the form of trade and translocation of animals and artifacts. Linguistics, though not as informative as archaeology for settlement dates, provides detailed evidence for isolation and/or contact in the form of language isolates, language families, borrowing and linguistic divergence. The mtDNA haplogroups found in this study belong to several documented haplogroups, some of Melanesian origin, and some of Southeast Asian origin. The distribution of mtDNA variants and the pattern and degree of variation was examined using Analysis of Molecular Variance, standard diversity measures and partial Mantel matrix correlations. There were strong positive correlations between insular area, isolation and degree of variation. There were also measurable differences between inland and coastal populations on the larger islands where diversity in the isolated inland populations was greater than diversity in the coastal population. While there was some confounding of the variables, the results of our analysis indicate that insular area/complexity and isolation influence the pattern of variance more than length of settlement time. / Anthropology

Commodore Perry's 1853 Japanese Expedition: How Whaling Influenced the Event that Revolutionized Japan

Burcin, Terry 24 May 2005 (has links)
In July 1853, Commodore Matthew C. Perry illegally entered Tokyo Bay with a fleet of four American warships and challenged Japan's isolationist position towards the United States. This radical diplomatic effort concluded with a return voyage a year later and ended Japan's self-imposed isolation from the Western world. Historians, in an attempt to explain the motivations behind Perry's voyage, cite an American commercial desire for Chinese trade as the main reason behind the Japanese Expedition's dispatch. This historical perspective ignores the important economic and political influence the whaling industry played in spurring American politicians to confront Japanese isolationism. It is incorrect to assert that whaling, and not America's desire to gain access to China, was the main reason behind the 1853 Japanese Expedition. This paper's objective is to understand how whaling influenced Perry's mission. It should be read as a supplement to current historical scholarship concerning America's decision to send a naval force into Japanese waters. / Master of Arts
