The goal of this research was to understand the language and technical and artistic procedures adopted by composer and arranger Marcos Leite. As such, a historical overview of the Brazilian choral movement was traced starting in the 1960s as a foundation for the practices that solidified this musical activity through the years. In order to analyze the vocal writing of Marcos Leite, the songs Jura, Rosa dos Ventos and The Fool on the Hill were chosen, with arrangements produced specifically for the Cultura Inglesa Chorus (Cobra Coral) and for the vocal group Garganta Profunda. The musical excerpts were analyzed under the technical aspects of form, structure and texture, as well as procedures of harmonic structure. It was concluded that, even in songs with varying levels of difficulty, the colloquial elements that are characteristic to popular language were maintained. The arrangements show balance in all vocal parts, allying the characteristic simplicity of the composer with creative elements in the countermelodies as interest generators. This study points the significance of the work of Marcos Leite and his contemporaries in the sense of renewing the practice of choral music and establishing innovative parameters that influence conductors and arrangers of today / Mestrado / Praticas Interpretativas / Mestre em Música

Stravinsky and the Transcriptional Process: an Analytical and Historical Study of Petrouchka

Hallquist, Robert N. 05 1900 (has links)
After considering Petrouchka's historical and compositional background and the orchestral revision of 1947, this thesis analyzes the composition, dealing specifically with formal, harmonic, and melodic aspects. The study's most important discovery is of a common formal design for all the scenes and the piece as a whole, where the outer thirds of ternary structures are equal in length. The thesis also examines Stravinsky's transcriptional procedures, cataloging and contrasting them with those of the nineteenth century. The solo transcription of Petrouchka is fully discussed in the light of Stravinsky's singular treatment of and writing for the piano. In addition to the recorded performance of Trois Mouvements de Petrouchka, this dissertation includes three tape recordings of selected piano works of J. P. Rameau, L. V. Beethoven, F. Chopin, F. Liszt, C. Franck, A. Scriabin, and G. Crumb.

The perceived organizational support and employee engagement in the context of flexible working arrangements

Moalusi, Odirile January 2021 (has links)
The work environment has vastly become more demanding and organizational practises have required have needed to be cognisant of methods to keep employees engaged. The topic of flexible working arrangements (FWA) has grown in popularity by research scholars and business practitioners. Considerable research has been conducted on the various dynamics of FWA and the influence of employee engagement. This research however aims to explore emerging themes in perceived organizational support (POS) and employee engagement in the context of flexible work arrangements, to gain in-depth understanding of the relationship between POS and employee engagement, in addition to what has been contributed to literature. The research study was conducted through qualitative methodology of exploratory obtained by the researcher. 14 semi-structured interviews were largely conducted through virtual communication platform, Zoom; and where possible interviews were conducted face-to-face, through open-ended questions. Respondents consisted of 7 Managers and 7 Employees from different organisations across three different industries. The analysis of the interviews was conducted through the six-stage thematic analysis. The research found four emerging themes FWA associated with flexible working schedules, enabling infrastructure, work life balance and adapting to a new way of working. The research also found a positive relationship between employee engagement and POS through common themes such as trust between managers and employees, decision making and dedication to work tasks. The perspectives and views from the participants were commonly affected by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and therefore the researcher made every attempt to gain perspectives prior the pandemic and during the pandemic from the participants. The research was limited to medium to large sized organisations operating in South Africa. / Mini Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2021. / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / MBA / Unrestricted

LEGISLATIVE BACKGROUND AND PROCEDURAL ARRANGEMENT OF STRATEGIC ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT IN CHINA AND GERMANY: TAKING SPATIAL PLANNING AS EXAMPLE

Li, Zhilin 24 July 2019 (has links)
Having witnessed significant advancement from an academic aspect and practical experiences, strategic environmental assessment (SEA) in China is still undergoing a series of challenges. These challenges result from the legislative background or procedural arrangement. Moreover, with the increasing significance of spatial planning in China, the integration of SEA into the Chinese spatial planning system is becoming a hot topic; whereas, the practice of SEA in the Chinese spatial planning system is currently rather weak. Against these backgrounds - urgency of the integration of SEA into the spatial planning system, lack of related experiences and a SEA system with challenges in China, and SEA for the spatial planning with abundant experiences and lessons in Germany-, this research takes the form of a comparative study on SEA in China and Germany, using the example of spatial planning. Its primary concern is to identify legislative and institutional differences and similarities between SEA in the two countries and analyse the reasons causing these differences. Based upon these, feasible recommendations are proposed to address these challenges which the Chinese SEA is facing. A total of four SEA cases from China and Germany were described and analysed, and 22 experts were interviewed in the form of semi-structured interviews. The specific objectives of the research are to: • to obtain an overview of the SEA application in Chinese and German spatial planning systems; • to compare legal requirements, institutional and procedural arrangements for SEA between China and Germany, taking the examples of spatial planning; • to identify similarities and distinctions lying in both systems, and explore the reasons and motivations causing them; and • to propose recommendations and suggestions for the optimization of Chinese and German SEA, in particular in the aspects of legal requirements, institutional arrangements and operational procedures. Comparative outcomes indicate both SEA systems possess some similar general requirements while delivering differences as well. Main similarities are embodied in SEA understandings, the establishment of related national legislation and adoption of some common steps, reflecting the two SEA systems are influenced by international SEA development. However, significant differences exist in many aspects, especially regarding SEA modes, application of some stages owned by the individual country as well as the concrete requirements for the same stages which both nations have. Outcomes of this research show different SEA characteristics in the two countries. From the aspect of legislative background, German SEA legislation holds a dynamic nature and highlights communication and cooperation. This communication and cooperation can take place between the EU and Germany, the German federal government and the Federal States or even between Federal States. Comparably, Chinese SEA legislation has less interaction with other planning laws and is mainly dependent on the frequent formulation of related technical guidelines and rules. From procedural arrangements, Germany aims to develop an integrated, highly transparent, efficient and wide participation SEA process while China values the independence of the SEA approach, cherishes experts’ opinions and advantages of the intervention of environmental authorities. Based upon the comparative outcomes, several recommendations to improve the application of SEA in Chinese spatial planning are provided.
