Transcription and Critical Edition of Carl Nielsen's Songs, Op. 4 and 10 for Flute and PianoPillman, Laura, 1990- 08 1900 (has links)
Widely regarded as one of the most significant composers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Carl Nielsen and his music have come to define the early twentieth-century musical traditions of Denmark. His original songs for voice and piano are often revered as popular folk tunes and contributed to his status as a national icon. My dissertation explores Nielsen's vocal repertoire through a multipart project that includes transcribing and editing eleven of Nielsen's early songs from Op. 4 (1891) and Op. 10 (1894), originally for voice and piano, for flute and piano. I discuss the reception history and context of Nielsen's Songs, the important role of transcription in flute literature, and provide full score transcription of the original works for flute and piano. Many vocal works have been transcribed for flute from the original vocal score, providing variety in programming and attracting diverse audiences to performances. Transcription offers scholars a new view into a work, by determining what elements of the piece are integral to maintain the composer's intentions.

The Historical Importance and Resulting Arrangement of Artie Shaw's Third Stream Composition Interlude in B-flatRinge, Gerald 08 1900 (has links)
Artie Shaw's Interlude in B-flat is unknown to many in the classical clarinet world and remains unperformed by clarinetists, despite its historical importance as one of the earliest Third Stream compositions, the earliest composition of its type in the clarinet repertoire. This prompts the question, why? This document explores four possible reasons for the marginalization of Interlude in B-flat. First, Shaw's historical narrative typically places him within the jazz world and not the classical world. Classical clarinetists may assume a Shaw composition will require a jazz background and experience beyond their abilities, namely improvisation. Second, the instrumentation, string quartet plus jazz combo, is atypical, making it difficult to program. Third, jazz and classical educational worlds do not necessarily overlap or interact, and neither has taken ownership of this Third Stream composition. Lastly, manuscripts, recordings, and other materials for Interlude in B-flat are limited and not readily available. Because Artie Shaw is not only a significant American clarinetist but also an important composer within the Third Stream narrative, Interlude in B-flat should be known and performed. This project aimed to promote the understanding and accessibility of this important and unknown composition to the classical clarinet world by providing an accessible arrangement of the work for clarinet and piano.

The broken circuit complex and the Orlik - Terao algebra of a hyperplane arrangementLe, Van Dinh 17 February 2016 (has links)
My thesis is mostly concerned with algebraic and combinatorial aspects of the
theory of hyperplane arrangements. More specifically, I study the Orlik-Terao algebra of a hyperplane arrangement and the broken circuit complex of a matroid. The Orlik-Terao algebra is a useful tool for studying hyperplane arrangements, especially for characterizing some non-combinatorial properties. The broken circuit complex, on the one hand, is closely related to the Orlik-Terao algebra, and on the other hand, plays a crucial role in the study of many combinatorial problem: the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a matroid are encoded in the f-vector of the broken circuit complex of the matroid. Among main results of the thesis are characterizations of the complete intersection and Gorenstein properties of the broken circuit complex and the Orlik-Terao algebra. I also study the h-vector of the broken circuit complex of a series-parallel network and relate certain entries of that vector to ear decompositions of the network. An application of the Orlik-Terao algebra in studying the relation space of a hyperplane arrangement is also included in the thesis.

Bohuslav Martinů's Oboe Concerto, H. 353: A New Piano Reduction of the Orchestral ScoreJeoung, Ko Eun 12 1900 (has links)
Bohuslav Martinů's "Concerto for Oboe and Small Orchestra" is one of the most frequently played pieces in the oboe repertoire. For this reason, it is often played with the piano reduction instead of the orchestra in oboe recitals. However, the existing piano reductions include many errors and discrepancies from the orchestral score, misrepresent the orchestration, sometimes fail to make the oboe entries clear, and tend to be unplayable for pianists. Moreover, the scores were published after the composer's death without him supervising the final editing. I have prepared a new, playable piano reduction to represent the orchestration more faithfully and help pianists work with their soloists more easily. Based on the work of Martin Katz, a prominent collaborative-pianist, I establish four principles for creating a new piano reduction. After scrutiny of the deficiencies of existing piano reductions, I suggest solutions for making the passages in question practical and bringing out the leading voices clearly so that the soloist can join in as easily as playing with an orchestra. To aid in reflecting the orchestral texture that Martinů created, I include abbreviated instrument names in many passages to help pianists to understand how to create balance. I have changed some passages completely to make the sound closer to the orchestral texture. All changes and suggestions are based on the orchestral score and its layout. This simplified and practical piano reduction should help pianists have more enjoyable and more successful collaborations with their soloists.

Manuel de Falla's "Siete Canciones populares Españolas" (1914): Study and Transcription for Horn and PianoPérez Alonso, Rubén 08 1900 (has links)
This survey presents a transcription for horn and piano of Siete Canciones populares Españolas (Seven Popular Spanish Songs) by Manuel de Falla (1876-1946). Siete Canciones populares was written originally for voice and piano and previous transcriptions with different instrumentation have been published after the original work. In order to provide a faithful representation in my version, my study explores three main subjects: the style of Manuel de Falla; the significance of Siete Canciones; and the composer's horn writing in his orchestral work The Three-Cornered Hat. The solo horn repertoire originates in the central European countries and remains a product of their traditions until the second half of the twentieth century, when it was broadened by composers worldwide. My transcription helps to fill a gap in the repertoire for horn and piano by Spanish composers before 1950. It will serve as both a resource for horn players and a valuable contribution to horn recital repertoire.

Problem of the Arrangement for two Pianos of Sedlak by Jindr. Jindrich and Prelude, op. 34, no. 5, by Dmitri ShostakovichEntriken, Rebecca Love 08 1900 (has links)
This study was prompted by the writer's interest and experience in the field of two-piano performance. At the beginning of this writer's two-piano work the available material was scarce, and much of it was inadequate in quality from the standpoint of both composition and arrangement. It seems strange that this particular form of chamber music, so delightful to play and so enjoyable to listen to, did not completely take popular fancy until the twentieth century. During the past ten years however, teachers are realizing the benefits derived from training students in two-piano playing. There is no doubt in the writer's opinion that two-piano concerts will henceforth always be in demand.

[pt] ARRANJOS INSTITUCIONAIS DE IMPLEMENTAÇÃO: ANALISANDO O CONSÓRCIO CEDERJ / [en] INSTITUTIONAL ARRANGEMENT FOR IMPLEMENTATION: ANALYZING THE CEDERJ CONSORTIUMPAULA ARAUJO DA COSTA 16 June 2021 (has links)
[en] Institutional Arrangement for Implementation: Analyzing the Cederj Consortium, it deals with a distance education policy in higher education, which has been going on since the 2000s, which is in line with legal provisions, since it aims to expand and internalize, in the semi-presential modality, admission higher education, in particular access to teacher training courses. The objective of the research when investigating the Cederj Consortium is to analyze the institutional implementation arrangement, through the collaboration regime existing between the federal entities (State Government, through the Cecierj Foundation; Municipal Governments and the Federal Government, with the participation of UAB). This investigation in the light of the literature on policy implementation is relevant, due to the scarcity of studies on this study of this educational policy based on the theoretical framework of political science, especially in the concept of institutional implementation arrangement and in Matland s ambiguity-conflict model. The research is of a qualitative nature, carried out through thematic content analysis with documentary data accessed via the Access to Information Law. Through the analyzed documents, it was possible to map some elements of the institutional arrangement, such as: instruments, incentives and responsibilities existing between the federal entities. As well as, identify the implementation model, proposed by Matland (1995). This study sought to advance academic production on the Cederj Consortium and distance education, using the framework from the field of political science on the implementation of public policies.

The Amalgamation of Western and Eastern Influences in Julius Schloss's "First Chinese Rhapsody"Cai, Ying (Pianist) 08 1900 (has links)
The dissertation seeks to rediscover Julius Schloss, a German Jewish composer victimized by the Nazis. Except for the promising start of his career in his early years, Schloss suffered a hard life as an exiled refugee. However, his unusual experiences inspired him to compose two Chinese Rhapsodies during his last years of exile in Shanghai, in which he synthesized Western composition techniques and Chinese folk materials, amalgamating influences from both Western and Eastern music cultures. Focusing on Schloss's First Chinese Rhapsody, the dissertation explores how Schloss links the new to the old, the West to the East, through an analysis of the way he employs Chinese folk song material and serial polyphonic voice-leading in his post-tonal musical language. Since the Rhapsody has both serial and polyphonic voice-leading aspects, both are analyzed, showing how they are integrated in the form.

Moving towards BIM : Managing the gap between design and construction / Flytta mot BIM : Hantera klyftan mellan design och konstruktionPurba, Prisila Putri Pinarsinta January 2018 (has links)
Many literature suggested that BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a promising future for the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry that offers enormous benefits to its actors, such as improved design quality due to less collision between disciplines and better understanding of building overview for better communication among the project team and decision-making process. However, lack of BIM knowledge and skill, absence of BIM legal acts, huge investment, software limitations, etc, are most of the time becoming barriers for them to reap the full potential of BIM. Especially during the project processes, there is a loss of value in information assets across phases. In a project setting, CPM (construction project management) organisation is believed to be in a key position between the client and the other project team members to encourage BIM implementation, for instance by the ability to formulate BIM guidelines, influence the organisational and contractual arrangement, and mandating model-based deliverables. Yet, this power comes with a bigger responsibility to manage those challenges aforementioned. The purpose of the study is to investigate the current practise of a chosen CPM organisation, Forsen Projekt AB, and propose a suggestion of improvement to implement BIM during the design and construction phase. This study adopts qualitative method that builds on literature study and semi-structured interview in order to answer the research questions on what are the gaps faced by CPM organisation in implementing BIM and how to align BIM with the CPM practise in order to manage those gaps. The interview with eight different project roles from Forsen and its affiliated organisations in a project setting enables multiple perspectives about the challenges they perceived when working in BIM environment. The findings revealed that the major gaps founded in BIM implementation are related to organisational, legal or contractual, people and process, and IT-capacity. Suggestions on how to bridge those gaps are then formulated accordingly, such as the collaborative organisational structure, BIM general guidelines, and knowledge management strategies.
