A cartografia temática no estudo do turismo: o município de Santo Antônio do Pinhal (SP) / Thematic cartography in the study of tourism: township of Santo Antônio do Pinhal (SP)

Silva, Marinyl Ribeiro da 17 December 2010 (has links)
Tourism is an economic activity and social practice that is linked in multiple relationships with the society that vitalizes it. Analyzing a destination, a particular tourist site allows us to regard different perspectives. We seeked to focus this study in the geographical reading of the process that transformed tourism in an important vector for the production of space in the township of Santo Antônio do Pinhal (SP), destination we selected, among many others, that permits us to research and reveal every component, being it natural or social, which integrates the area used for tourism. Beginning from the townships foundation, we proceeded in search of understanding the relationships that configure history, spatial distribution and in which manner it emerges and is part of our current reality. We continued the investigation to view the possible paths of tourist activity and warn of potential predatory tourism. In order to reason about the possibilities and how the appropriation of space for tourism and tourism in the township itself, we learned to know and understand how this territory has developed. Both socioeconomic and environmental aspects were chosen to promote an understanding of how tourism elected Santo Antônio do Pinhal. From the analysis of selected variables and attributes, coupled with the chosen theoretical and methodological fundaments, we traced the goal in this study. We outlined a presentation of analytical and supportive maps for the research and cartographic treatment of the study area. This enabled us to draw up a map of synthesis, specifically of the types of landscape that could, through critical viewing, subsidize a preliminary proposal of tourist zoning for the township, based on an approach of thematic cartography. The present study allowed a connection capable of linking geography, cartography and tourism, permitting the formation of a structure of data and information that guided the research, to achieve our goal.

Uso de simuladores hidráulicos e aplicativos de geoprocessamento para diagnóstico operacional de sistemas de distribuição de água - estudo de caso: setor Sacomã, município de São Paulo. / Use of hydraulic simulators and geoprocessing applications for water distribution systems operational diagnosis - case study: water supply system Sacomã, city of São Paulo.

Oliveira, Hilton Alexandre de 17 February 2011 (has links)
The work presents a proposed methodology for diagnosis of water distribution systems through the development, step-by-step and hydraulic simulators use supported by geoprocessing applications. Using real data and operational history of leaks within the region adopted a time interval, is expected to provide the analyst a tool for visual analysis of the hydraulic behavior of the sector according to a progressive scale of occurrences, mapped through colors, in order to evaluate the quality of hydraulic model as a whole, correcting deviations so that it efficiently reproduces the actual behavior of the distribution network. Through this, it is expected to evaluate the consequences of variation of pressure and flows during the day, supporting decision-making, allowing the evaluation of the options and the reduction of unnecessary risks and investments.

Quantifying and mapping the supply of and demand for urban ecosystem services

Zhao, Chang 01 May 2018 (has links)
The ecosystem services (ES) concept is meant to facilitate consideration of the value of nature in conservation and landscape management processes by translating ecosystem functions into human benefits. Incorporating the ES concept into policy and decision-making has proven difficult due to challenges in identifying, measuring, and locating services and in predicting the impacts of decisions upon them. ES mapping offers a key solution to increase our understanding of the spatial patterns of ES supply and demand and the spatial relationships between them, but may be challenging to implement given a lack of spatial data related to ES or existence of such data at coarse resolution that may not facilitate accurate ES quantification, mapping and modeling. This issue is particularly acute in urban settings where landscapes are highly heterogeneous and fragmented. This research seeks to improve our understanding of urban ES supply, demand and the relationships between them, as well as the impacts of spatial scale, input data quality and method choice on ES mapping in urban landscapes. The dissertation is composed of three studies. In the first study, I introduce a spatially-explicit framework for quantifying and mapping ES supply and demand using carbon storage and sequestration services as an example. This framework assesses supply based on biophysical conditions and demand based on socioeconomic characteristics, allowing for more integrative ES assessments in urban areas. In the second study, I evaluate the sensitivity of ES maps to input spatial data resolution and method choice (ecosystem component-based and land-cover proxy-based methods) in a heterogeneous urban landscape using biomass carbon storage as an example. I find that ES map accuracy is highly dependent on analytical scales and input data representativeness. ES estimates based on ecosystem-component data are more accurate than those based on land-cover proxies. The accuracy of land-cover proxy-based maps, however, can be increased by using high-resolution land-cover maps. The third study aims to increase understanding of ES supply, demand, and supply-demand balance in urban contexts. To this end, I create a high-thematic-resolution land-cover dataset and combine it with the InVEST pollination model to assess the capacity of urban ecosystems to supply pollination services to satisfy the demands of urban agriculture. I find using land-cover dataset at a higher thematic resolution enhances the accuracy of pollination estimates, highlighting the importance of considering scale and land-use dependencies in urban ES mapping. Combined, these studies advance our knowledge of ES supply, demand and the relationships between them, and provide new insight into the impacts of input data spatial and thematic resolution and method choice on the accuracy of urban ES maps.

Taxonomic or Thematic: Categorization of Familiar Objects by Preschool-Aged Children

Calhoun, David Owen 01 May 1995 (has links)
To acquire language, children must learn how to categorize objects on the basis of the meanings that cultures have assigned to the objects. A series of six experiments tested how preschool-aged children categorize familiar objects. Each experiment used a matching-to-sample format in which children matched pictures of familiar objects (comparisons) to a sample stimulus picture. The sample and one comparison related taxonomically (on the basis of function) from which the children were to find another stimulus that was the same as the sample. Each experiment was a systematic replication of published research and of the prior experiment. In all six experiments, these pre-school-aged children demonstrated a statistically significant preference for the taxonomic stimulus. No statistically significant differences were found between genders. The results of these six experiments did not support the development trend described in the majority of the extant literature. These findings are also contrary to the research literature, with one noted exception.

HOW WHITE TEACHERS’ IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT TRANSLATES TO CLASSROOM INTERACTIONS WITH MINORITY STUDENTS

Arsenault, Chelsea 01 January 2018 (has links)
Historically, research on racial microaggressions has focused on adult populations within clinical as well as work environments. The literature is just beginning to examine microaggressions within the K-12 education system and with younger populations. It is important to assess how racial microaggressions are impacting high school students given that research has indicated that this population is experiencing racial injustices. The perpetration of racial microaggressions is the basis for students’ discriminatory experiences within these institutions. This work has recently become even more necessary given that the high school student population is becoming increasingly racially diverse while our teaching population has remained mostly White. The purpose of this study is to investigate how White educators’ White identity development translates to the racial microaggression commission in the classroom setting. This study took place across three public schools within the South United States. This study included five White educators and 25 of their non-White students. The educators were interviewed and a selection of their non-White students were surveyed. This data was then analyzed using Thematic Analysis (TA). TA was utilized to uncover where White educators were in their White identity development and to assess students’ experiences with racial microaggressions. This study explored White identity development using Helms’ (1990, 1995) White Identity Development model. Findings indicated that White educators were at various levels of their White identity development. The educators ranged from those who endorsed colorblind ideologies to those engaged in racial activism. The findings were structured into six overcharging themes: Adherence to Colorblind Attitudes, Initial Response to Emerging Awareness of Racism, Denigration of POC, Intellectual Understanding of Racism, Desire to Achieve a Nonracist Definition of Whiteness, Positive White Racial Identity. The student participants reported diverse experiences within the school setting. The results were organized into two overarching themes: Positive School Experiences and Negative School Experiences. Recommendations were offered for educator preparation programs, ongoing training for educations, as well as larger systemic alterations.

BUILDING BRIDGES FROM CURRENT ENGLISH CONTENT TO AN IMAGINED ENGLISH FUTURE

Alsulami, Iftikar Saeed, Aleisa, Danyah Abdulaziz 01 June 2016 (has links)
Learning English as a second language is a key factor to promote globalization, because the language has spread widely. Furthermore, learning English vocabulary for the fast-paced global business environment is highly dependent on the imagined future of a business major; he or she must imagine in what context the business career will take place: what sphere of activity will be involved, in which scenarios of language usage, and what lexical items will be needed. Vocabulary learning has long been characterized by the use of decontextualized vocabulary academic word lists. As an alternative, this project researches the use of an integrated language thematic mode--the theme being business communication-with a focus on incorporating various linguistics aspects of learning English. This research will emphasize the integrated linguistics approach to the acquisition of academic vocabulary. Additionally, the project explores the use of an individual’s imagined community in setting vocabulary goals and second-language-acquisition strategies. The study took place at the English Language Program and College of Business and Public Administration (CBPA) at California State University, San Bernardino in the spring of 2016. International students were asked to participate in a survey; an interview questionnaire was designed to discover the students’ preferences strategies and in learning English with respect to their future career. The results varied based on students’ backgrounds, their specific majors, and their personalities and preferred ways of learning.

COPING WITH INTERROLE CONFLICT: A MIXED-METHOD STUDY OF STUDENTS IN A MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK PROGRAM

Torres, Mireya 01 June 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this research study was to assess how social work students cope with interrole conflict. This study attempted to capture the depth and breadth of this issue by adopting a mixed-method research design. The quantitative aspect to the study involved the assessment of coping mechanisms among participants with different levels of interrole conflict. For the qualitative portion of the study, the participants were asked to identify their ways of dealing with interrole conflict. All participants in this research were graduate students from a master’s of social work program in a large, Hispanic-serving institution in Southern California. A non-parametric technique, the Kruskal-Wallis H Test, was used to analyze the quantitative part of the research, while thematic analysis was applied to the qualitative piece of reported information. The Kruskal-Wallis H Test results indicated no statistically significant difference in coping mechanisms among students dealing with different levels of interrole conflict. Meanwhile, results from thematic analysis of the data revealed ten positive coping mechanisms and five negative coping approaches. Organization, social support, self-care, orientation toward solution, spirituality/religiosity, physical activity, and therapy were the most salient ways participants cope with interrole conflict. From a negative coping perspective, as many as 18 participants reported negative coping methods, including unresponsiveness, over/under sleeping, eating, and drinking. Implications for family, workplace, and social work were discussed.

DISCUSSING SEXUAL HEALTH TOPICS WITH SEVERELY MENTALLY ILL CLIENTS: AN EXPLORATION OF SOCIAL WORK PRACTITIONERS’ PREPAREDNESS

Rodriguez, Priscilla 01 June 2018 (has links)
Mental health professionals have an important role to play in assessing and addressing the needs of their clients, including those with severe mental illness. Research, however, has demonstrated a reluctance toward discussing sexual health topics with severely mentally ill clients. The purpose of this study was to explore social work practitioners’ attitudes and preparedness toward addressing the sexual health need of clients who are mentally challenged to a great extent. Under the qualitative research paradigm, this study sampled 8 licensed clinical social workers who currently work in the United States. Thematic analysis of interview data generated four major themes. First, social workers harbor positive attitudes toward mental health; second, social work practitioners perceived themselves as prepared to address sexual health concerns with clients; third, sexual health discussions with severely mentally ill clients should be a part of the solution, not of the problem; and fourth, empowerment of clients and normalization of mental health are ways to combat discomfort toward discussing sexual health issues with clients. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

A Narrative Study Focusing on Survivors of Forced Labor Trafficking

Raggio, Taras NK 01 January 2019 (has links)
Throughout history, the media's rendering of slavery depicts vulnerable groups caught in a network of trafficking looking for a better life. Scholars of trafficking cite challenges in understanding the health care needs of domestic forced labor trafficking survivors in the United States. Seminal trafficking findings have shown that variations of trafficking affect the survivors' health after surviving trafficking. Therefore, in this qualitative, narrative inquiry I sought to understand how 8 survivors of forced labor trafficking, ages 25 years and older, described their health following trafficking beyond 5 years. The theory of social constructionism constituted the theoretical foundation, and the salutogenic model of health is the conceptual framework. The research questions for the study focused on understanding how adult survivors described experiences of entering and exiting trafficking, and their physical health, post-trafficking involvement. Criterion sampling facilitated identifying survivors of forced labor trafficking. Semi-structured interviewing guided the survivors' narrative storytelling. For analyzing the narratives, I used Braun and Clarke's Thematic Analysis strategy. The results of the pilot and main study showed that survivors suffer from an array of ongoing cognitive and general health concerns beyond surviving trafficking. The findings suggest that these ongoing health conditions influenced survivors' well-being beyond surviving trafficking. The results of the study may lead those in the medical field (e.g. health administrators) to identify other conditions influencing survivors' health after surviving trafficking.
