Effect of biological amendments on soil microbial properties and performance of pome fruit treesVan Schoor, Louise 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD(Agric))--Stellenbosch University, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The global movement in agriculture is towards more environmentally friendly, sustainable production practices, since the role of soil microbial functions in ensuring crop production and soil fertility has become
more evident in agricultural systems. Furthermore, with the impeding phase-out of methyl bromide, apple replant disease (ARD) is becoming an increasingly important problem and biological management practises are needed. Since microbial activity is generally carbon-limited in agricultural soil, it is widely accepted that management practices providing a range of organic compounds on a regular basis will tend to maintain
an active and diverse microbial population. It was hypothesised that the application of various biological amendments can affect soil microbial numbers and function, thereby having a positive effect on fruit tree growth and yield. The effect of continued applications of organic material, various microbial inoculants and biostimulants on tree performance were evaluated in conventional management systems. Field trials were established in a conventional pear orchard, potential apple replant disease sites, as well as an optimally
managed, high density apple orchard under controlled fertigation. The use of compost, compost extracts, a Bacillus inoculant and humates were investigated intensively. Furthermore, to improve our understanding
of soil biological systems a combination of simple, practical methods were used to evaluate the effect of biological amendments on soil microbial properties and effects were related to tree performance. Regular application of compost extract in combination with compost showed the most significant effect in improving tree performance in commercial pome fruit orchards under various conditions. In the pear orchard, cumulative yield over the first two seasons was improved by more than 50% compared to controls,
while in the fertigated orchard yield was improved by 22%. Biological amendments also showed improved growth in orchards suffering from stunted growth symptoms typical of ARD. However, in severe ARD cases methyl bromide fumigation showed the most consistent effects. Other biological amendments which showed positive effects on yield were application of Bacillus inoculants (Biostart®) in combination with a
labile C source and a low dosage humate product, as well as a combination of compost and humates. It was clear that a combination of labile organic matter and a diverse group of microorganisms showed most promise. Although for some specific treatments increased microbial numbers and activity may have resulted in improved tree performance, in general, changes in culture-based plate counts, soil enzyme activity and carbon utilisation profiles could not be used as an indicator of yield. It was suggested that
improved synchronisation of nutrient release and plant uptake, as well as microbial phytohormone
production, may play an important role in improving tree performance with application of biological amendments. More research is needed on the exact mechanisms through which compost extracts improve yield and studies on root growth proliferation, as well as effects in the rhizosphere are recommended. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Binne lanbouverband is daar tans wêreldwyd die neiging om die uitwerking van produksie-praktykte op die omgewing in ag te neem en sodoende meer verantwoordelik op te tree. Omdat die belangrike rol wat grondmikro-organisme funksionering in volhoubare verbouingspraktyke speel nou deeglik besef word, word meer volhoubare bestuurspraktyke bepleit. Hiermee saam, noodsaak aspekte soos die uitfasering van
metielbromied vir die beheer van appelhervestigingsiekte, dat biologiese bestuurspraktyke meer aandag geniet. Daar word geredelik aanvaar dat gereelde toediening en aanvulling van organiese materiaal ‘n aktiewe, diverse mikrobe populasie in die grond tot gevolg sal hê. Die hipotese is gestel dat die toediening

konvensionele peerboord, verskeie boorde met moontlike appelhervestigingsiekte probleme, asook ‘n hoëdigtheidsaanplanting appelboord onder optimale bestuur. ‘n Deeglike ondersoek is gedoen met betrekking tot die gebruik van kompos, komposekstrak, Bacillus-inokulante en humate. Eenvoudige, praktiese metodes is aangewend om vas te stel hoe biologiese toevoegings grondmikrobe eienskappe beïnvloed en of dit verband hou met veranderinge in boomprestasie. Die studie het aangetoon dat die gereelde toediening van komposekstrak saammet kompos, betekenisvolle
verbetering in boomprestasie van kernvrugboorde teweeg bring onder verskeie omstandighede. Die
kumulatiewe opbrengs van ‘n peerboord is oor twee seisoene met meer as 50% verhoog teenoor die
kontrole. In ‘n optimaal bestuurde appelboord onder sproeibemesting, is opbrengs met 22% verhoog in vergelyking met die kontrole. Biologiese toevoegings het ook groei verbeter in boorde waar appelhervestigingsiekte bome se groei vertraag het. In die geval van ernstige appelhervestigingsimptome het metielbromied egter steeds die mees konstante positiewe uitwerking gehad. Ander biologiese toevoegings wat ‘n gunstige uitwerking op opbrengs getoon het, was ‘n kombinasie van Bacillus inokulante, ‘n lae dosis humaat en ‘n aktiewe koolstofbron, asook kompos in kombinasie met humate. Dit is duidelik dat ‘n kombinasie van ‘n maklik afbreekbare koolstofbron (soos kompos) tesame met ‘n diverse
groep mikroorganismes mees belowend is vir gebruik in biologiese verbouingssisteme. Resultate toon dat veranderings in aantal organismes gemeet deur plaattellings, die aktiwiteit van grondensieme, en verbruikspotensiaal van verskillende koolstofbronne, nie as ‘n aanduiding van boomprestasie gebruik kan word nie. Daar is voorgestel dat verbeterde sinkronisasie van voedingselementvrystelling en plantopname,
sowel as produksie van plantgroeihormone deur mikrobe, moontlik ‘n rol speel by boomreaksies op
biologiese toevoegings. Meer navorsing wat verband hou met die meganisme waardeur komposekstrak opbrengs verbeter, is nodig. Verder word studies op fynwortelontwikkeling sowel as aspekte van die wortelrisosfeer aanbeveel.

Aroma profiles and non-destructive determination of quality parameters of Japanese plums (Prunus salicina Lindl.)Louw, Esme Denise 03 1900 (has links)

includes non-volatile compounds, e.g. sugars and acids, and has been well researched to meet the
consumers’ preferences. Plum aroma, however, has not enjoyed the same attention. Limited literature is
available on the aroma of Japanese plums and none could be found on the effects of relatively long cold
storage on the profiles. The main aim of this study is to investigate the changes in aroma compounds of
Japanese plums throughout maturation and ripening and the effects of commercial cold storage regimes.
Near infra-red (NIR) spectroscopy was also evaluated as a non-destructive method to determine plum
quality parameters aimed at minimising sample variability.
In Paper 1, NIR spectroscopy was used to develop prediction models for total soluble solid (TSS), total
acidity (TA), sugar-to-acid ratio, firmness and weight in three cultivars (Pioneer, Laetitia and Angeleno)
and a multi-cultivar model. Samples were collected for seven consecutive weeks and repeated over two
seasons. TSS results showed excellent predictability (R2 = 0.817-0.955; RMSEP= 0.453-0.610 % Brix)
but the TA models did not perform well. The sugar-to-acid ratio models had results comparable to that of
TSS. Both the firmness and weight models had acceptable results. The models of ‘Pioneer’ and ‘Laetitia’
had a better predictability capacity than the ‘Angeleno’ model. Although the multi-cultivar models
outperformed the single cultivar models on R2 values it had higher prediction errors. The robustness of all
the TSS, TA and firmness models is high in terms of seasonality, range and cultivar.
Papers 2 and 3, the main focus of the study, are concerned with the aroma profile dynamics of Japanese
plums. HS-SPME was used in both papers to extract the aroma compounds followed by GC-TOFMS for
separation and identification. In Paper 2, the aroma volatile compounds of three cultivars (Pioneer,
Laetitia and Angeleno) were determined for a seven week period including samples from three maturity
stages (immature, harvest and tree-ripe). A total of 35 compounds were identified of which ten were
generic. Each cultivar had five unique compounds resulting in different aroma profiles for each of the
maturity stages and distinct separation patterns using discriminant analysis.
The study was extended in Paper 3 where the aroma volatile compounds of six cultivars (Pioneer,
Sapphire, Laetitia, Songold, Larry Anne and Angeleno) and one plumcot (Flavor King) were determined at
three functional stages (commercial harvest, tree-ripe fruit and cold stored fruit). A total of 62 compounds
were identified and classified into three groups (‘unique’ (31), ‘generic’ (11) and ‘frequent’ (20)) based on their frequency of occurrence. The aroma profiles of ‘Larry Anne’ and ‘Flavor King’ are the most affected
by cold storage conditions and ‘Pioneer’ appears to be the least affected. All the cultivars have
significantly different aroma profiles at all three of the functional stages with ‘Sapphire’, ‘Larry Anne’ and
‘Flavor King’ showing the largest differences. ‘Flavor King’, a plumcot, presented a ripe aroma profile that
was much diverged from that of the true plums. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Pruime met ‘n goeie smaak, aroma en eetkwaliteit lei tot herhaalde verkope en volhoubare aanvraag.
Smaak sluit die nie-vlugtige stowwe (suikers en sure) in en is goed nagevors om die verbruikersvoorkeure
te bevredig. Pruim aroma het egter nie dieselfde aandag geniet nie. Daar is beperkte literatuur beskikbaar
wat handel oor die aroma van Japanese pruime en geen kon gevind word oor die effekte van lang
koelopberging op die aromaprofiele nie. Die hoof doel van hierdie studie is om die veranderinge in die
aromatiese komponente van Japanese pruime te ondersoek tydens die volwassewording- en
rypwordingsprosesse asook die effekte van kommersiele koelopberging. Naby infrarooi (NIR)
spektroskopie is ook geevalueer as ‘n nie-destruktiewe manier om pruim kwaliteitsparameters te bepaal
met die doel om monstervariasie te beperk.
In Artikel 1 is NIR spektroskopie gebruik om voorspellingsmodelle vir totale oplosbare suikers (TOS),
totale suur (TS), suiker-tot-suur verhouding, fermheid en gewig te bepaal in drie kultivars (Pioneer,
Laetitia en Angeleno) asook ‘n multi-kultivar model. Monsters is vir sewe opeenvolgende weke versamel
en herhaal oor twee seisoene. TOS resultate toon uitstekende voorspelbaarheid (R2 = 0.817-0.955;
RMSEP= 0.453-0.610 % Brix) maar TS modelle het egter nie so goed gevaar nie. Die suiker-tot-suur
verhoudingsmodelle se resultate was vergelykbaar met die van TOS. Beide die fermheid- en
gewigsmodelle het aanvaarbare resultate opgelewer. Die modelle vir ‘Pioneer’ en ‘Laetitia’ het ‘n beter
voorspelbaarheidskapasiteit getoon as die van ‘Angeleno’. Alhoewel die multi-kultivar model beter
presteer het as die enkel kultivar modelle op die R2-waardes was daar meer voorspellingsfoute. Hoe
robuustheid is gevind i.t.v. seisoene, datagrense en kultivar vir al die TOS, TA en fermheidsmodelle.
Artikels 2 en 3, die fokuspunt van die studie, handel oor die dinamika van die aromaprofiel van Japanese
pruime. HS-SPME is in beide artikels gebruik on die aromatiese verbindings te ekstraeer gevolg deur GCTOFMS
vir skeiding en identifikasie. In Artikel 2 is die aromatiese stowwe van drie kultivars (Pioneer,
Laetitia en Angeleno) bepaal vir sewe opeenvolgende weke en sluit monsters van drie
volwassenheidsstadiums in (onvolwasse, oes en boom-rypgemaakte pruime). ‘n Totaal van 35
verbindings is geidentifiseer waarvan tien as generies beskou kan word. Elke kultivar het vyf unieke
komponente gehad en het gelei tot verskillende aromaprofiele vir elk van die volwassenheidsstadiums en
diverse skeidingspatrone tydens die gebruik van diskriminant analise.
Die studie is uitgebrei in Artikel 3 waartydens die aromatiese vlugtige stowwe van ses kultivars (Pioneer,
Sapphire, Laetitia, Songold, Larry Anne en Angeleno) en een plumcot (Flavor King) bepaal is tydens drie
funksionele stadiums (oes, boom-rypgemaak en koelopgebergde pruime). ‘n Totaal van 62 verbindings is

postharvest control in the table grape industry relies on SO2. This gas not only controls the
fungus but also causes losses due to phytotoxicity. SO2 also creates allergic reactions
amongst certain people. In modern times the focus is on food safety and governments
consequently impose certain regulations and restrictions to restrict the use of chemicals and
ensure “cleaner” produce. The objective of this study was to find a steriliser to reduce B.
cinerea inoculum on the berry surface prior to storage,to be used in conjunction with the
current method of control – the SO2 generator pad.

cultivars, attractive colour is essential to their profitability on export markets. This
study focuses on problems related to poor green colour of ‘Granny Smith’ apples
and insufficient red colour of bi-coloured pear cultivars.
‘Granny Smith’ apples often suffer from poor green colour. Green colour of fruit
from various orchards was already found to differ midway through fruit
development, with these differences being carried through to harvest. In a trial
where nitrogen (N) fertilisers were applied using different forms at different times,
there was no improvement in green colour. In another trial, artificial shading was
applied to fruit only during their early development. Fruit that were shaded during
this time were less green at harvest than unshaded fruit. Additional N
applications may only improve colour where a deficiency exists. However, green
colour may be improved by increasing light distribution early during fruit
development.
Bi-coloured pears attain their maximum red colour midway through their
development, and this desired red colour is mostly lost prior to harvest. Red
colour can also increase transiently with the passing of cold fronts. Anthocyanins,
responsible for this red colour, may have a photoprotective function which would
explain this pigmentation pattern, as photosystems are particularly sensitive to
light damage at low temperatures. As ‘Rosemarie’ fruit bent over from a vertical
to hanging position during development, peel photoinhibition was reduced as
anthocyanins were synthesised. ‘Forelle’ peel was found to be very sensitive to
high light levels at low temperatures. Substantial anthocyanin development took
place in ‘Cripps’ Pink’ apples when weather conditions were cold, but clear
following a cold front. A photoprotective role seems to explain daily changes in
anthocyanins in response to temperature, but not the seasonal progression of

colour development. Dwarfing rootstocks are known to improve red colour of bi-coloured pears due to
improved light distribution. ‘Forelle’ fruit from six rootstocks of varying vigour were
harvested from exposed positions only, so as to establish the effect of rootstock
on red colour development independent of the effect of rootstock on canopy light
distribution. Fruit from trees on quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill.) rootstocks were
found to have redder fruit than those from vigorous BP pear rootstocks. This may
be due to higher chlorophyll and carotenoid concentrations present in the peel of
fruit from BP rootstocks, whose leaf and peel N were also high. The use of
quince rootstocks is recommended where red colour development of bi-coloured
pears is a problem.
An early season bi-coloured cultivar with good red colour is required. Breeding
trials to find such a cultivar are resource intensive. To streamline the process, a
method to preselect immature seedlings for their future fruit colour is required.
Fruit colour from bearing seedlings was compared with colour of their immature
leaves. Trees with red leaves were likely to produce fruit that were too red for the
breeders’ requirements. Trees with green or blushed leaves were capable of
producing blushed fruit. It would be feasible to cull red-leaved seedlings with
minimal risk of losing potential bi-coloured cultivars. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Verskeie appel (Malus domestica Borkh.) en peer (Pyrus communis L.) kultivars

koue fronte. Antosianiene, wat verantwoordelik is vir die rooi kleur, het moontlik
‘n beskermende funksie teen hoë ligvlakke, en hierdie funksie mag moontlik die
bogenoemde patroon van rooikleurontwikkeling verklaar. Die natuurlike buiging
van ‘Rosemarie’ pere van hul aanvanklike regop oriëntasie tot hul karakteristieke
hangende posisie, is gekenmerk deur ‘n afname in fotoinhibisie van die skil en ‘n
gelyklopende sintese van antosianien. ‘Forelle’ skil was uiters sensitief vir hoë
ligvlakke in kombinasie met lae temperature (16 ºC). ‘Cripps’ Pink’ appels het ‘n

Kweperonderstamme (Cydonia oblonga Mill.) het rooi kleur verbeter in
vergelyking met die groeikragtige BP peeronderstamme. ‘n Moontlike rede vir die
verbetering is die laer chlorofiel- en karotenoïedkonsentrasies in die skil van
vrugte op kweperonderstamme. Bome op peeronderstamme het ook hoër blaaren
skil stikstofvlakke gehad. Kweperonderstamme word aanbeveel in gevalle
waar rooi kleurontwikkeling van blospere ‘n probleem mag wees.
Die RSA vrugtebedryf benodig ‘n vroeë blospeerkultivar met goeie rooi
kleurontwikkeling. Die teling van so ‘n kultivar is hulpbronintensief en baie duur.
Ten einde die teelproses meer effektief te maak, word ‘n metode benodig om
saailinge al voor uitplanting in die boord te selekteer na gelang van hul
toekomstige vrugkleur. Die vrugkleur van oesryp pere van draende saailinge is
vergelyk met die kleur van hul onvolwasse blare. Bome met rooi blare is geneig
om vrugte te dra wat té rooi is om te kwalifiseer as blospere. Die meerderheid
blospere is afkomstig van bome met blos of groen onvolwasse blare. Dit is
prakties haalbaar om rooiblaarsaailinge uit te dun, met net ‘n klein, aanvaarbare

Cooling and shipping studies on table grapes (Vitis vinifera L.)Ngcobo, Mduduzi E. K. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScAgric)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Fruit quality is the most important factor that determines prices for the fruit in the
international markets. Although different consumers perceive quality differently there are
quality variables that are always associated with poor quality by all consumers. In table
grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) these variables may include overall appearance, stem condition,
SO2 damage, decay, berry browning and shatter. The presence of these quality defects
negatively affects prices and most often results in quality claims.
Cooling is the most widely used method to reduce the postharvest loss of fruit quality. In
South Africa, most deciduous fruits including table grapes are forced air cooled to a
statutory pulp temperature of –0.5°C prior to shipping in an effort to preserve quality,
thus ensuring good market prices for the fruits. Despite these efforts, there are still quality
claims from the markets and this reduces the returns to the growers.
The objectives of this research were to: (i) see if cooling time can be reduced by cooling
to higher pulp temperatures of 1.5°C and 3°C without causing quality losses, thus
improving the throughput of the cold rooms; (ii) see if the problem of berry browning can
be alleviated by cooling grapes to higher pulp temperature, and (iii) see whether pallet
positioning in the cooling tunnels and reefer container affect quality.
The trends showed better quality when ‘Victoria’ and ‘Regal Seedless’ were forced air
cooled (FAC) to pulp temperatures of 1.5 °C and 3 °C as opposed to –0.5 °C. There were
no economic losses associated with pre-cooling grapes to pulp temperatures of 1.5 °C and
3 °C. There were no significant differences in berry browning related to pre-cooling
treatments. However, cooling time was reduced significantly. In most of the cooling
tunnels and reefer containers used in this trial, grape quality results showed no significant
differences between the positions in the stack and in reefer containers. However, in cases
where there were significant differences, the middle and the rear positions showed better
grape quality in terms of stem condition (dry and brown stems) than the front position
(near fan) in both the pre-cooling stack and reefer containers. The trends showed that the front is cooler than the back of the pre-cooling stack. The pulp
temperature differences between the front and rear positions in the reefer container were
as high as 1.23 °C. The trends also showed that the bottom layers of the pallets were
cooler than the top layers in the reefer container.
FAC to 3°C resulted in a constant reduction in percentage electrolyte leakage after 4
weeks of storage at –0.5°C, while FAC to 1.5°C, -0.5°C and static room cooling (control)
in some cases showed an initially low electrolyte leakage followed by an increase in
leakage after 4 weeks of storage.
FAC grapes to higher pulp temperatures of 3°C and 1.5°C could reduce the cooling time,
thereby improving the throughput of cold rooms. There was no clear evidence to suggest
that browning was due to pre-cooling practices. Both preharvest and postharvest
conditions need to be further investigated to better understand the problems of browning
in white table grapes. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Vrugkwaliteit is ʼn kritiese faktor in die bepaling van pryse op die internasionale markte.
Alhoewel daar variasie voorkom tussen verbruikers in wat vrugkwaliteit is, bly sekere
aspekte altyd onveranderd. Ononderhandelbare kwaliteit aspekte in tafeldruiwe (Vitis
vinifera L.) sluit die algemene voorkoms, toestand van die trosstingels, SO2 skade,
bederf, korrel verbruining en los-korrels in. Indien enige van die kwaliteit-defekte
voorkom het dit ʼn negatiewe impak op die prys en lei gewoonlik tot gehalte eise.
Verkoeling word algemeen gebruik om die verlies van na-oes kwaliteit te verminder. Die
meeste sagtevrugte geproduseer in Suid Afrika (insluitend tafeldruiwe) ondergaan
geforseerde verkoeling tot ʼn statutêre pulptemperatuur van -0.5°C, voor verskeping.
Ondanks hierdie maatreëls om hoë pryse te verseker, is daar steeds kwaliteiteise in die
mark wat lei tot ‘n laer inkomste vir produsente.
Die navorsing het dus ten doel gehad om : (i) te bepaal of die tyd van verkoeling
verminder kan word, indien na hoër pulptemperature van 1.5°C en 3°C verkoel kan word,
sonder ‘n verlies in kwaliteit en sodoende die deurvloeitempo van die koelkamers
verhoog; (ii) om te bepaal of die voorkoms van korrelverbruining verlaag kan word
indien tot hoër pulp-temperature verkoel word, en (iii) laastens om te bepaal of posisie
van die palet in die verkoelingstonnel en verskepingshouer ʼn invloed het op
vrugkwaliteit.
Tendense toon dat ‘Victoria’ en ‘Regal Seedless’ kwaliteit beter was indien verkoel tot
pulptemperature van 1.5°C en 3°C in vergelyking met -0.5°C. Daar was geen
ekonomiese verliese waargeneem indien die hoër verkoelingstemperature gebruik is nie.
Alhoewel daar geen betekenisvolle verskille in korrelverbruining voorgekom het tussen
temperatuur behandelings nie is die verkoelingsperiode verkort. In die meeste van die
verskepingshouers, asook in posisies tydens geforseerde verkoeling is daar geen
betekenisvolle verskille waargeneem nie. In die gevalle waar daar egter wel betekenisvolle verskille voorgekom het, het die middel en agter posisies beter
vrugkwaliteit gehad as die voorste posisie tydens verkoeling asook houerverskeping.
Die palette aan die voorkant (naby die waaier) het as ʼn algemene tendens laer
temperature as in die agterkant van die verkoelingstonnel. Verskille in pulptemperature
tussen palette in die voor en agterkant van verskepingshouers was so hoog as 1.23°C. Die
temperatuurdata het uitgewys dat die onderste laag kartonne neig om by ‘n laer
temperatuur te wees as die boonste lae kartonne tydens houerverskeping.
Geforseerde verkoeling teen 3°C het gelei tot ‘n afname in persentasie elektrolietlekkasie
na 4 weke van verkoeling teen -0.5°C. Terselfdertyd het geforseerde verkoeling tot 1.5°C
en -0.5°C asook statiese verkoeling (kontrole) in sekere gevalle gelei tot ‘n laer
aanvanklike uitlek van elektrolietlekkasie, gevolg deur ʼn verhoging na 4 weke opberging.
Geforseerde verkoeling van tafeldruiwe tot pulptemperature van 1.5°C en 3°C verkort die
verkoelingstyd en verhoog dus die deurvloeitempo in die verkoelingskamers. Daar was
gedurende die studie geen duidelike bewyse gevind dat korrelverbruining voorkom as
gevolg van verkoelingspraktyke nie. Beide voor en na-oes praktyke sal verder ondersoek
moet word om die invloed daarvan te bepaal op die verbruining van wit tafeldruiwe.

stress the important role of calcium (Ca) in maintaining firmness and preventing the
development of physiological disorders in fruit. This study focused on the effect of water and
nutrient management strategies, rootstocks and foliar Ca applications on fruit Ca content.
Final Ca content/concentration in apple fruit at harvest did not differ significantly between
treatments water with micro jets (hand nutrition), water and nutrients with fertigation, or
water and nutrients with pulsating drip when applied to ‘Brookfield Gala’ trees in third leaf,
on two rootstocks (M793 and M7).
In the second trial, three Ca levels were applied to ‘Brookfield Gala’ trees through a pulsating
drip system during three phenological periods to evaluate the effect on Ca uptake of the fruit.
During the second season, application of high Ca levels for the period full bloom to harvest
gave a higher fruit Ca concentration than with applications of standard or low Ca.

citrus fruit causing creases on the surface of the fruit. It is a recurrent problem in Navel and
Valencia oranges and can cause individual orchard losses which often exceed 50%. Although the
contributing factors are known, the physiological basis of creasing development is unresolved and
the current control measures do not prevent creasing satisfactory. Hence, better control measures
and further understanding of the physiology of creasing development is required.
The objective of this two-year study was to determine if the position of fruit in a tree, light and
carbohydrate manipulation techniques, and albedo mineral nutrients influence creasing
development. Furthermore, the most effective application timing of gibberellic acid (GA3) with
the least negative effect on fruit rind colour development and the effectiveness of cytokinins,
other products and different root biostimulants to reduce creasing incidence were evaluated.
The position of fruit in the tree and light influenced the development of creasing and the
distribution of mineral nutrients in the albedo. Creasing incidence was higher on the south side
than on the north side of the tree and fruit from the inside sub-sectors had a greater creasing
incidence compared to fruit from the outside sub-sectors. The shady part of outside fruit was
more creased compared to the sunny part of the fruit and covering fruit with brown paper bags
increased creasing severity. The light manipulation techniques used on the leaves and fruit
increased the nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) and manganese (Mn) concentrations in
the albedo and differences in the albedo mineral nutrients amongst the sub-sectors evaluated were
observed, but creasing severity or creasing incidence was not significantly correlated with the
albedo mineral concentrations at harvest. Albedo mineral concentrations earlier in the season may
play a role in creasing development, as creasing severity was significantly correlated with copper (Cu), K, and Mn concentrations in the albedo during stage II of fruit development. Creasing
incidence and albedo mineral concentrations were not affected by any of the carbohydrate
manipulation techniques used in this study.
The incidence and severity of creasing was significantly reduced, with a minor negative effect on
fruit rind colour development, by the application of GA3, from mid November to mid January.
Localised fruit application of CPPU [N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N-phenylurea], MaxCel (6-
Benzyladenine) and CPPU in combination with calcium after physiological fruit drop reduced the
incidence and severity of creasing, although creasing incidence was not significantly different
from the control. The application of Messenger®, AVG (aminoethoxyvinylglycine) and different
root biostimulants did not reduce creasing incidence. The results showed that cytokinins could
reduce creasing incidence and justify further studies on application and uptake efficiency. The
use of different root biostimulants are not recommended, but it is suggested that treatment effects
may be more pronounced over a longer period. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Kraakskil is ‘n vooroes abnormalitiet wat die albedo van sitrusvrugte affekteer, deur krake op die
oppervlak van vrugte te veroorsaak. Dit is ‘n algemene probleem in Navel en Valencia lemoene
en kan boordverliese van tot 50% of soms hoër veroorsaak. Alhoewel die bydraende faktore
bekend is, is die fisiologiese basis van kraakskil ontwikkeling onopgelos en die beskikbare
beheermaatreëls is nie bevredigend nie. Dus, beter beheermaatreëls en ‘n beter begrip van die
fisiologie van kraakskil ontwikkeling is nodig.
Die doel van die twee-jaar studie was om te bepaal of die posisie van vrugte in ‘n boom, lig en
koolhidraat manipulasie tegnieke en minerale elemente in die albedo, kraakskil ontwikkeling

Optimum temperatures for colour development in applesGouws, Anton 23 November 2010 (has links)
Thesis (MScAgric (Horticulture))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Peel colour is an important quality factor in the production of bi-coloured apple fruit. Most markets set minimum requirements for red colour coverage. Fruit that do not meet these requirements are downgraded and has a major impact on the profitability of apple production
in South Africa. South African apple production areas are amongst the warmest in the world.
Since anthocyanin accumulation requires induction at low temperature and synthesis require
mild temperatures, experiments were conducted to investigate optimum day and night temperatures for red colour development throughout fruit development for red and bi-coloured apple cultivars grown in South Africa. We found that redder strains of bi-coloured apple cultivars did not appear to owe their enhanced pigmentation to higher temperature optima for anthocyanin synthesis. The optimum day temperatures for red colour development in the
different cultivars seemed to differ between seasons, but not between production areas. In
general, red colour in the cultivars evaluated developed maximally between 17 ºC and 25 ºC.
The optimum day temperature for red colour development remained constant throughout fruit
development for most cultivars, but increased roughly from 14 ºC to 22 ºC in ‘Cripps’ Pink’
between January and April. The extent of red colour development increased during fruit development in all the cultivars assessed. We were unable to determine optimum induction temperatures for red colour development. ‘Royal Gala’ from Ceres seemed to benefit from
induction at 4 ºC while red colour in ‘Fuji’ decreased with decreasing temperature.
To explain the presence of anthocyanins in immature apple fruit, we tested the hypothesis
that anthocyanins protect the peel from photoinhibition and photooxidative damage during
conditions of increased light stress. First we established that the rate of colour change in
response to a passing cold front appears to be sufficient to provide photoprotection during a
cold snap. Also in agreement with the hypothesis, ‘Cripps Pink’ peel incurred significantly
more photoinhibition at low temperature (16 ºC) compared to mild (24 and 32 ºC) and high (40
ºC) temperature under high irradiance with visible light. Recovery rate was temperaturedependent,
being the slowest at low temperature and increasing with temperature. The photoapparatus in ‘Cripps Pink’ peel appears to be particularly sensitive to light stress at low temperature throughout the season, with significant photoinhibition occurring even at
moderate temperature (24 ºC). The sensitivity of the apple peel to photoinhibition increased throughout the season at lower irradiance levels, but remained the same at higher irradiance.
In our final experiment, fruit were exposed to high irradiance at low and mild temperature before exposure to high temperature in combination with high irradiance. This was done to test the hypothesis that photoinhibition incurred during cold snaps predisposes peel to photothermal damage when temperature increases again after the cold snap. Unfortunately, due to the severity of the stress incurred in response to high temperature treatment, the
results were inconclusive. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Vrugkleur is ‘n belangrike kwaliteitsfaktor in die produksie van tweekleurappels. Die meeste markte stel minimum vereistes vir rooi kleurbedekking. Antosianien akkumulasie benodig induksie by lae temperature gevolg

seleksies van tweekleurappel kultivars nie aan ‘n hoër temperatuur optimum vir antosianiensintese toegeskryf kan word nie. Die optimum dag temperature vir rooi kleurontwikkeling vir die onderskeie kultivars verskil klaarblyklik tussen seisoene, maar nie tussen produksie areas nie. Oor die algemeen het kleurontwikkeling maksimaal plaasgevind tussen 17 ºC en 25 ºC. Die optimum dagtemperatuur vir rooi kleurontwikkeling het konstant
gebly tydens vrugontwikkeling, buiten vir ‘Cripps’ Pink’ waar dit toegeneem het van ongeveer
14 ºC tot 22 ºC vanaf Januarie tot April. Die mate van rooi kleurontwikkeling het in al die
kultivars toegeneem deur die loop van vrugontwikkeling . Ons kon nie daarin slaag om optimum induksie temperature vir rooi kleurontwikkeling vas te stel nie. Rooi kleurontwikkeling
van ‘Royal Gala’ uit Ceres is moontlik bevorder deur induksie by 4 ºC, terwyl ‘Fuji’ se rooi
kleur afgeneem het met ‘n verlaging in induksie temperatuur.
Ten einde die teenwoordigheid van antosianien in onvolwasse appelvruggies te verduidelik,
het ons die hipotese getoets dat antosianien die vrugskil beskerm teen fotoinhibisie en fotooksidatiewe beskadiging gedurende tydperke van verhoogde ligstres. Eerstens het ons
bevestig dat die tempo van kleurontwikkeling in reaksie op ‘n koue front waarskynlik vinnig
genoeg is om fotobeskerming te verleen. Vervolgens is gevind dat ‘Cripps’ Pink’ vrugskil
aansienlik meer fotoinhibisie ervaar het by lae temperatuur (16 ºC) in vergelyking met matige
(24 ºC en 32 ºC) en hoë (40 ºC) temperatuur onder hoë irradiasie met sigbare lig. Die hersteltempo was temperatuur-afhanklik; dit was die stadigste by lae temperatuur en het toegeneem met ‘n toename in temperatuur. Die foto-apparaat in ‘Cripps’ Pink’ vrugskil blyk
besonder sensitief te wees vir ligstres by lae temperatuur regdeur die groeiseisoen met

opgedoen word gedurende ‘n onverwagte koue periode, die skil meer vatbaar maak vir fototermiese
skade sodra die temperatuur weer styg na die koue periode verby is. Ongelukkig het
die hoë temperatuur stres al die behandelings tot so ‘n mate geaffekteer dat dit onmoontlik
was om enige gevolgtrekkings vanuit ons resultate te maak.

Shoot growth control of apple, pear and plum trees with prohexadione-calciumSmit, Mariska 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScAgric)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Excessive shoot growth of fruit trees may have various negative effects. These include a
decrease in fruit set, fruit size, red colour and in return bloom. Cultural practices that are
currently in use, such as the use of dwarfing rootstocks, girdling and pruning do not always
give sufficient shoot growth control. The use of plant growth retardants, in combination with
these cultural practices, offer additional possibilities. Trials were conducted to evaluate the
effect of the new plant growth retardant prohexadione-calcium (P-Ca) on apple, pear and
plum shoot growth. In addition, the effect of P-Ca on fruit set, fruit size, yield, fruit quality
and return bloom were also evaluated.
During the 1999/2000 season P-Ca was applied to full bearing twelfth leaf 'Golden Delicious'
trees on M793 rootstock, twenty-sixth leaf 'Granny Smith' trees on seedling rootstock, ninth
leaf 'Royal Gala' trees on M793 rootstock, seventh leaf 'Rosemarie' trees on seedling
rootstock and eighth leaf 'Songold' trees on 'Marianna' rootstock in the Villiersdorp area in
the Western Cape (33°59' S, 19°17' E; ca. 365 m a.s.l.; Mediterranean climate). P-Ca was
applied at concentrations of 3 x 50, 4 x 50 and 3 x 67 mg.l' to the apple trees. The first
application was at petal drop with no surfactant added with any of the treatments. P-Ca was
applied at concentrations of2 x 62.5,125,250 and 2 x 125 mg.l" to the pear and plum trees.
The first application was at petal drop and pit-hardening for the pear and plum trees
respectively. Agral-90 was used as surfactant only with the first spray applied to the pear
trees. During the 2000/2001 season the same 'Golden Delicious' and 'Royal Gala' trees were
used as in the 1999/2000 season. Thirteenth leaf 'Granny Smith' trees on M793 rootstock in
the Villiersdorp area were used. Sixth leaf 'Rosemarie' trees on BP3 rootstock, fifth leaf
'Golden Russet Bose' trees on BP3 rootstock, seventh leaf 'Forelle' trees on BP3 rootstock
and 16th leaf 'Packham's Triumph' trees on seedling rootstock in the Wolseley area in the
Western Cape were used. P-Ca was again applied at concentrations of 3 x 50,4 x 50 and 3 x
67 mg.l' to the apple trees. The first application in the 'Golden Delicious' and 'Granny
Smith' trees was at full bloom and at petal drop in the 'Royal Gala' trees. The last application
was at 45 days before harvest. No surfactant was added with any of the sprays. P-Ca was
applied at concentrations of 50, 75, 150, 2 x 50,2 x 75 and 3 x 50 mg.l" to the pear trees with
the first spray when 4 to 5 leaves were unfolded and the last one 45 days before harvest.
Agral-90 was added as surfactant with all the pear sprays. The pear trial also included a
girdling treatment. P-Ca effectively inhibited shoot growth of all three apple cultivars in both seasons. Regrowth
occurred in both seasons in all the cultivars, therefore it is not clear which treatment(s)
is optimal for reducing shoot growth. P-Ca increased fruit size in 'Royal Gala' in the
1999/2000 season and decreased yield expressed as kg fruit harvested 1 em trunk
circumference in 'Golden Delicious' in the 2000/2001 season. This reduction in yield can be
attributed to the low number of flower clusters in the spring of 2000 following P-Ca treatment
in 1999. P-Ca decreased the number of developed seeds in 'Royal Gala' in both seasons and
increased the number of seeds with aborted embrios in the 200012001 season. After four
weeks of cold storage (± 5°C) and one week at room temperature (± 20°C), P-Ca had no effect
on the occurrence of bitter pit in 'Golden Delicious'. The 'Granny Smith' trees were
harvested before fruit analysis could be done in the 2000/2001 season.
In pear, girdling was not effective in inhibiting shoot growth in any of the cultivars, but P-Ca
proved to be an effective inhibitor of shoot growth of 'Rosemarie' and 'Golden Russet Bose',
and to a lesser degree 'Packham's Triumph', but not 'Forelle'. Despite the re-growth that
occurred ca. four weeks after harvest in 'Rosemarie' in the 2000/20001 season, it appears that
a single high rate (250 and 150 mg.l' for the 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 seasons respectively)
P-Ca application is more effective than a single low rate or multiple low rates in inhibiting
shoot growth. In the 200012001 season P-Ca increased fruit set in 'Rosemarie' and 'Forelle'.
In both seasons P-Ca reduced 'Rosemarie' fruit size while girdling increased 'Forelle' and
'Packham's Triumph' fruit size in 2000/2001. P-Ca increased 'Rosemarie' fruit firmness and
'Forelle' fruit colour in the 2000/2001 season and decreased the percentage of 'Packham's
Triumph' fruit with cork spot. Girdling increased 'Packham's Triumph' fruit colour and TSS
concentration while decreasing fruit firmness in 2000/2001. P-Ca reduced return bloom in
'Forelle' and 'Packham's Triumph' in 2001, while girdling increased 'Golden Russet Bose'
and 'Forelle' return bloom. Due to poor flowering and thus low fruit number in 'Golden
Russet Bose', fruit set in 2000 could not be determined and no fruit analysis could be done.
In 'Songold' all four P-Ca treatments inhibited shoot growth, but the 2 x 125 mg.l' treatment
were the most effective, both in terms of total shoot growth and in reduction of the re-growth
that occurred ca. two weeks before the first commercial harvest date. P-Ca increased fruit
firmness and decreased TSS concentration both at harvest and after four weeks of cold storage
at dual temperature (10 days at -O.soC + 18 days at 7.S°C). In conclusion P-Ca is an effective inhibitor of shoot growth of the apples 'Golden Delicious',
'Granny Smith' and 'Royal Gala', the pears 'Rosemarie', 'Golden Russet Bose' and
'Packham's Triumph' and the plum 'Songold', but more work is needed to control re-growth. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Oormatige lootgroei van vrugtebome kan verskeie negatiewe effekte tot gevolg he,
insluitende 'n afname in vrugset, vruggrootte, rooi kleur en 'n verlaging in die
daaropvolgende jaar se blom. Boordpraktyke soos die gebruik van dwergende onderstamme,
ringelering en snoei, beheer nie altyd lootgroei doeltreffend nie. Die gebruik van
groeireguleerders, in kombinasie met hierdie boordpraktyke, bied bykomende geleenthede.
Proewe is uitgevoer om die effek van die nuwe groeireguleerder proheksadioon-kalsium (PCa)
op appel, peer en pruim lootgroei te evalueer. Die effek van P-Ca op vrugset,
vruggrootte, opbrengs, vrugkwalitiet en die daaropvolgende jaar se blom is ook geevalueer.
Gedurende die 1999/2000 seisoen is P-Ca toegedien aan voldraende twaalfde blad 'Golden
Delicious' bome op M793 onderstamme, ses-en-twintigste blad 'Granny Smith' bome op
saailing onderstamme, negende blad 'Royal Gala' bome op M793 onderstamme, sewende
blad 'Rosemarie' bome op saailing onderstamme en agste blad 'Songold' bome op
'Marianna' onderstamme in die Villiersdorp area in die Wes Kaap (33°25' S, 19°12' 0;
ligging ong. 270 m.; Meditereense klimaat). P-Ca is aan die appelbome toegedien teen
konsentrasies van 3 x 50, 4 x 50 en 3 x 67 mg.l' met die eerste toediening by blomblaarval.
Geen benatter is by enige van die toedienings gevoeg nie. P-Ca is aan die peer- en
pruimbome toegedien teen konsentrasies van 2 x 62.5, 125, 250 en 2 x 125 mg.l' met die
eerste toediening by blomblaarval en pitverharding vir onderskeidelik die peer- en
pruimbome. Agral-90 is as benatter gebruik slegs saam met die eerste toediening op die
peerbome. Tydens die 2000/2001 seisoen is dieselfde 'Golden Delicious' en 'Royal Gala'
bome gebruik as in die 1999/2000 seisoen. Derde blad 'Granny Smith' bome op M793
onderstamme in die Villiersdorp area is gebruik. Sesde blad 'Rosemarie' bome op BP3
onderstamme, vyfde blad 'Golden Russet Bose' bome op BPI onderstamme, sewende blad
'Forelle' bome op BP3 onderstamme en sestiende blad 'Packham's Triumph' bome op
saailing onderstamme in die Wolseley area in die Wes Kaap is gebruik. P-Ca is weereens aan
die appelbome toegedien teen konsentrasies van 3 x 50, 4 x 50 en 3 x 67 mg.l". Die eerste
toediening aan die 'Golden Delicious' en 'Granny Smith' bome was by volblom en die eerste toediening aan die 'Royal Gala' bome by blomblaarval. Die laaste toediening is 45 dae voor
oes gedoen. Geen benatter is met enige van die toedienings bygevoeg nie. P-Ca is aan die
peerbome toegedien teen konsentrasies van 50, 75, 150,2 x 50, 2 x 75 en 3 x 50 mg.l' met
die eerste toediening toe vier tot vyf blare ontvou was en die laaste een 45 dae voor oes.
Agral-90 is as benatter gebruik met al die peer bespuitings. By die peer proef is ook 'n
ringeleer behandeling ingesluit.
In beide seisoene het P-Ca die lootgroei van al drie appel kultivars verminder. Hergroei het in
beide seisoene in al drie kultivars plaasgevind. Dit is dus onduidelik watter behandeling(s)
optimaal is vir lootgroei beheer. In die 1999/2000 seisoen het P-Ca 'Royal Gala' vruggrootte
verbeter. In die 2000/2001 seisoen is 'Golden Delicious' opbrengs, uitgedruk as kg vrugte
geoes / cm stamomtrek, verlaag. Hierdie verlaging in opbrengs kan toegeskryf word aan die
lae blom aantal in die lente van 2000 wat gevolg het op die P-Ca behandeling in 1999. In
beide seisoene het P-Ca die aantal ontwikkelde sade in 'Royal Gala' verminder terwyl die
aantal sade met geaborteerde embrios verhoog is in die 2000/2001 seisoen. Na vier weke
koelopberging (± 5°C) en een week by kamertemperatuur (± 20°C) het P-Ca geen effek op die
voorkoms van bitterpit in 'Golden Delicious' gehad nie. Die 'Granny Smith' bome is in die
2000/2001 seisoen geoes voordat enige data ingesamel kon word.
Ringelering het geen effek op lootgroei gehad in enige van die peer kultivars nie, maar P-Ca
het lootgroei effektief beheer in 'Rosemarie' en 'Golden Russet Bose' en tot 'n mindere mate
'Packham's Triumph', maar het geen effek op 'Forelle' lootgroei gehad nie. Ten spyte van
die hergroei wat voorgekom het in die 'Rosemarie' bome ongeveer vier weke na oes in die
2000/2001 seisoen, wil dit voorkom asof P-Ca toegedien teen 'n enkele hoe konsentrasie (250
en 150 mg.l' vir die 1999/2000 en 2000/2001 seisoene onderskeidelik) meer effektief was om
lootgroei te beheer as 'n enkele lae konsentrasie of veelvuldige lae konsentrasies. P-Ca het
vrugset in 'Rosemarie' en 'Forelle' verhoog in die 2000/2001 seisoen. In beide seisoene het
P-Ca 'Rosemarie' vruggrootte verlaag terwyl ringelering 'Forelle' en 'Packham's Triumph'
vruggrootte verbeter het in die 2000/2001 seisoen. P-Ca het 'Rosemarie' vrugfermheid en
'Forelle' vrugkleur verhoog in die 2000/2001 seisoen en die aantal 'Packham's Triumph'
vrugte met kurkvlek verlaag. Ringelering het 'Packham's Triumph' vrugkleur en TSSkonsentrasie
verhoog, maar vrugfermheid verlaag in die 2000/2001 seisoen. P-Ca het die
aantal blomme in 'Forelle' en 'Packham's Triumph' verlaag in 2001, terwyl ringelering blom
in 'Golden Russet Bosc' en 'Forelle' verhoog het. As gevolg van 'n lae blom- en dus vruggetal in 'Golden Russet Bosc' kon vrugset In 2000 nie bepaal word nie en geen
vrugontledings kon gedoen word nie.
Al vier P-Ca behandelings het lootgroei in 'Songold' beheer, maar die 2 x 12S mg.l'
toediening was die effektiefste, beide in terme van totale lootgroei en in beheer van die
hergroei wat ongeveer twee weke voor die eerste kommersieele oesdatum plaasgevind het. PCa
het vrugfermheid verhoog en die TSS-konsentrasie verlaag, beide tydens oes en na vier
weke koelopberging by dubbel temperatuur (10 dae by -O.soC + 18 dae by 7.S0C).
Om saam te vat kan gese word dat P-Ca 'n effektiewe inhibeerder van lootgroei van die
appels 'Golden Delicious', 'Granny Smith' en 'Royal Gala', die pere 'Rosemarie', 'Golden
Russet Bosc' en 'Packham's Triumph' en die pruim 'Songold' is. Meer werk is egter nodig
om die hergroei te beheer.
