eScience Approaches to Model Selection and Assessment : Applications in Bioinformatics

Eklund, Martin January 2009 (has links)
High-throughput experimental methods, such as DNA and protein microarrays, have become ubiquitous and indispensable tools in biology and biomedicine, and the number of high-throughput technologies is constantly increasing. They provide the power to measure thousands of properties of a biological system in a single experiment and have the potential to revolutionize our understanding of biology and medicine. However, the high expectations on high-throughput methods are challenged by the problem to statistically model the wealth of data in order to translate it into concrete biological knowledge, new drugs, and clinical practices. In particular, the huge number of properties measured in high-throughput experiments makes statistical model selection and assessment exigent. To use high-throughput data in critical applications, it must be warranted that the models we construct reflect the underlying biology and are not just hypotheses suggested by the data. We must furthermore have a clear picture of the risk of making incorrect decisions based on the models. The rapid improvements of computers and information technology have opened up new ways of how the problem of model selection and assessment can be approached. Specifically, eScience, i.e. computationally intensive science that is carried out in distributed network envi- ronments, provides computational power and means to efficiently access previously acquired scientific knowledge. This thesis investigates how we can use eScience to improve our chances of constructing biologically relevant models from high-throughput data. Novel methods for model selection and assessment that leverage on computational power and on prior scientific information to "guide" the model selection to models that a priori are likely to be relevant are proposed. In addition, a software system for deploying new methods and make them easily accessible to end users is presented.

Destination Arrival and Discharge Unit to Improve Patient Flow

Jeter, Shelia Celeste 01 January 2019 (has links)
The increase in patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) for primary care poses a serious safety issue in the care that can be provided. In a care area that is overcrowded, physicians, nurses, ancillary department staff, and other care team members may have a difficult time delivering care. Poorly managed flow in the ED leads to overcrowding, and patients with life-threatening illnesses are less likely to be transitioned to designated specialized areas in a safe and efficient manner. The practice-focused question was whether processes to improve the flow of patients entering the ED decreased the number of patients leaving without being seen, decreased time from the time entering the ED to hospital admission, improved the average length of stay, and increased patient satisfaction. The plan-do-check-act methodology was used to address this quality improvement project. Results of the project demonstrated a decrease in the number of patients leaving without being seen, a decrease in the time entering the ED to hospital admission, a decrease in average length of stay, and an increase in patient satisfaction. This project provided positive social change to the patients, families, organization, and community by improving the ED processes to ensure patient needs were addressed as rapidly as possible.

Through interviews and memorials, I seek to reveal the following problem: how are effective the relationships between the training they had and training they provide while teachers? The general objective of this research is to elaborate reflections from educational biographies of the teachers interviewed, recovering his memories and meanings about training and professionalization throughout their lives. The specific objectives of this, in turn, consist of: 1) analyze the importance of lifelong education egresses of these teachers of the Pedagogy course, 2) reflect on the professionalization of these teachers, and 3) understand the relations between training and professionalization signified by them. In this sense, the guiding point of this research refers to the reflection of four teachers, relating the story of their own lives with lifelong training and professionalization. For this, I tried to work from the educational biographies, which, as Honorio Filho (2009), present in its developmental perspective, but also provide the narration itself caused by another, in case I, the researcher Daniel. The narrative itself caused by the researcher is not only the desire to tell, but to tell another very specific. From the understanding of how teachers/pedagogues live, I seek, therefore, to understand how the formation of these women as teachers, as well as their dialectical relations in society, demonstrating thus the relevance of life history in the formation processes.

: étude de cas comparative d'une population d'actuaires chez AXA France et AXA Mexique / Communities of practice, informal learning and social networks in business : which sharing challenges? : case study of a group of actuaries in AXA France and AXA México

Barrantes, Karina 28 November 2014 (has links)
In the knowledge economy, the economic framework is, however, different from the agricultural and industrial economies, because the value is not produced exclusively by land or tangible objects, but also by the production of forms and the capitalization of knowledge. This research is supported by CIFRE scholarship between AXA Research Founds and Paris Descartes University. We chose to study two fields: AXA France and AXA Seguros México in order to try to define the possible cultural differences and the possible opportunities for sharing resources between both companies that belong to the same multinational group. In both contexts, we used mainly semi-structured interviews and participant observation. In this thesis, we will discuss three aspects: knowledge management within the company, training and circulation of knowledge, and challenges of communities of practice and social networks in new organizational contexts, mainly in the population of actuaries.

Breaking the Culture of Silence in Checkmating HIV/AIDS as a Teacher-Researcher

Esau, Omar January 2007 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / This study is about the author, a primary school teacher, who as a teacher-researcher wanted to improve the awareness of HIV/AIDS that has become a major challenge globally and has been on the increase over the past two-and-a-half decades, especially so, in sub-Saharan Africa. This is in spite of an "overflow" of HIV/AIDS information. The thesis documents two action research projects. Both of them are based on an emancipatory action research methodology. It has long been recognised that the HIV/AIDS pandemic requires more than medical attention and that the way in which teachers deal with HIV/AIDS education, especially at primary school level, becomes critical. A fundamental assumption of this study is that teachers play a critical role and are often the main adults, other than family members, with whom young people interact on a daily basis. Teachers can and must play a vital role in the development of valuable behavioural guidelines about reproductive health amongst the youth. This study views teachers, and more so primary school teachers, as important role players in the struggle to come to terms with HIV/AIDS. In reflecting about the HIV/AIDS pandemic, I realised that my classroom practice was characterised by a "culture of silence" when it came to discussing sex and matters concerning sexuality. The study sets out to enhance behavioural change in the way learners think about sex and sexuality and includes a continuous process of self reflection, self-awareness, planning and appropriate action. In Chapter One, I have tried to locate what I would regard as the problem in my teaching. I became increasingly convinced that my classroom practices might well be contributing to a lack of interweaving HIV/AIDS education into curriculum activity, while at the same time, promoting a "culture of silence" when it comes to issues of sex and sexuality. I arrived at this particular point as a result of reflectively looking at my own teaching career, as well as my own historical and schooling background which I felt has impacted on the way I teach. In this chapter I also give a brief historical background of the school where I teach and where I conducted my research. Towards the end of the chapter, I emphasise that teachers, including myself, need to redefine their role so as to empower students by creating the opportunity for their "voices" to be heard. I also explain concepts used in this written account such as "culture of silence" and "transformative intellectuals". In Chapter Two, I address the HIV and AIDS pandemic debate in more detail. I look at the impact of HIV/AIDS on education and how the implementation of an outcomes - based curriculum (C2005) takes up the HIV/AIDS challenge. In addition to this, I attempt to unpack the Western Cape Education Department's plans and policy concerning HIV/AIDS, after which I focus on breaking the HIV/AIDS "culture of silence". Before I conclude the chapter, I critically engage with the idea of the teacher as a researcher and critical change agent in an HIV/AIDS challenged society. In Chapter Three I provide a brief historical background of the development of action research. I point out how Lewin (1948) and Stenhouse's (1975) idea of action research was later taken up further and given a more critical perspective by writers such as Elliott (1985), Hopkins (1985), Walker (1985), Carr & Kemrnis (1986), Grundy (1987), Winter (1989), McKernan (2000), Meerkotter (2002) and McNiff & Whitehead (2006). I start with the defining (with due regard for the pitfalls of definitions) of action research and then focus on the nature and practices of an emancipatory action research approach. In this chapter I also elaborate on the reasons why I have decided on emancipatory action research as the main approach for this investigation. Chapter Four focuses on my first action research project where I set out to hear my students' "voice". And to contribute to the development of their voice to empower them with regard to sex and sexuality issues, a voice reflecting their increasing understanding of the seriousness of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and most of all a "critical voice" as purported by Freire (1972; 1980), Giroux (1988; 1991) and McLaren (1991; 2006). My second action research project "Checkmating HIV/AIDS", which is described in detail in Chapter Five, is a continuation of the first action research project where I tried to break down the "culture of silence" concerning HIV/AIDS and sex and sexuality in my classroom. On reflecting about the first project, I realized that awareness alone was not going to be enough to take up the HIV/AIDS prevention challenge. Infusing awareness with action was my next step, and sport, being a rallying point on our country's Transformation and Nation Building agenda became the ideal educational tool for this process. For successful prevention, individuals must be able to make decisions to protect themselves. In the second project I focus specifically on one code of sport, namely chess. In this second project, I set out to discuss the potential of using this code of sport to take up the HIV/AIDS challenge. Chapter Six is the concluding chapter. The question posed is: Can we ever win the battle against HIV/AIDS? Is it possible to change the way we think about sex and matters concerning sexuality? Thereafter the concept of change is interrogated and "clarified" in the context of my study. This is followed by looking at the two projects, and I specifically focus on whether these projects had been liberatory or transformative. I then address the issue concerning teachers as "transformative intellectuals" and teacher researchers and conclude by proposing emancipatory action research as a "vehicle" for change. Too often the response to the pandemic produces plans that list endless interventions. I strongly recommend that further research relating to the role of sport in education, with specific reference to HIV/AIDS, be prioritised. The argument being that sport, recreation and play are increasingly elements of development programmes around the world, contributing to the well-being, health and education of children and young people. If chess can contribute to checkmating HIV/AIDS and basketball to dunking HIV/AIDS then a big code such as soccer can definitely contribute to "dribbling" and "tackling" the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Especially, in view of the fact, that South Africa is hosting and showcasing the soccer world cup of 2010.

UTILIZATION OF WIND POWER IN RWANDA : Design and Production Option

Eric, MANIRAGUHA January 2013 (has links)
This Master Thesis is the research done in the country of Rwanda. The project leads to study the climate of this country in order to establish whether this climate could be used to produce energy from air and to implement the first wind turbine for serving the nation.   After an introduction about the historical background of wind power, the thesis work deals with assessment of wind energy potential of Rwanda in focusing of the most suitable place for wind power plants. The best location with annual mean wind speed, the rate of use of turbine with hub height for an annual production per year, the mean wind speeds for 6 sites of Rwanda based on ECMWF for climatic data for one year at relief of altitude of 100m and coordinates are reported too.   The result of energy produced and calculations were done based on power hitting wind turbine generator in order to calculate Kinetic energy and power available at the best location to the measurement over the period of 12 months, that could be hoped for long term.   With help of logarithmic law, where wind speed usually increases with increasing in elevation and the desired wind speeds at all 6 sites were used. The annual energy production was taken into account at the best site with desired wind speed at the initial cost of turbine as well as the cost of energy (COE).However, with comparison of the tariff of EWSA, the price of Wind designed in this Research per kWh is cheaper and suitable for people of Rwanda. / <p><em>Rwanda has considerable opportunities development energy from hydro sources, methane gas, solar and peat deposits. Most of these energy sources have not been fully exploited, such as solar, wind and geothermal. As such wood is still being the major source of energy for 94 per cent of the population and imported petroleum products consume more than 40 per cent of foreign exchange. Energy is a key component of the Rwandan economy. It is thus recognized that the current inadequate and expensive energy supply constitutes a limiting factor to sustainable development. Rwanda’s Vision 2020 emphasizes the need for economic growth, private investment and economic transformation supported by a reliable and affordable energy supply as a key factor for the development process. To achieve this transformation, the country will need to increase energy production and diversify into alternative energy sources. Rwandan nations don’t have small-scale solar, wind, and geothermal devices in operation providing energy to urban and rural areas. These types of energy production are especially useful in remote locations because of the excessive cost of transporting electricity from large-scale power plants. The application of renewable energy technology has the potential to alleviate many of the problems that face the people of Rwanda every day, especially if done so in a sustainable manner that prioritizes human rights.</em></p>
