Perceived Impacts of Volunteer Tourism in Favela Communities of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: This phenomenological qualitative study examines the experiences of volunteer tourism on host communities using social representations theory. The experiences of three stakeholder-groups (community residents, volunteers, and nongovernmental organizations) are considered. Overall objectives of this project are to investigate the following questions: a) what are the effects of volunteer tourism on a community as perceived by different stakeholders; b) what effects do volunteer tourists have on the community compared to other forms of tourism as perceived by different stakeholders; c) how do the various stakeholders perceive the different forms of tourism in communities in which they live or work; and d) why and how do nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) use volunteer tourism as a strategy for their projects. This study attempts to describe and interpret these meanings with a high degree of depth and richness using interviews, observation, and document analysis. Each chapter is written as a stand-alone paper to be published in a journal and describes the perspectives of the three groups interviewed with the final chapter a summary and comparison from all three groups. Findings show that there are both positive and negative impacts of volunteer tourism in favela communities, with the majority of the three groups expressing its positives and its importance to the community. All groups mentioned similar positive and negative elements of volunteer tourism with some elements that were unique to each group. This study also attempted to compare and contrast the differences between volunteer tourism and favela tours. The findings show that volunteer tourism helps recreate the social representations of the favela thereby improving self-esteem in the community, helps breakdown preconceptions, and helps create community pride. The community feels as equals with the volunteers and describes the interactions as friendships, sharing cultural experiences, and exchanging of knowledge. Conversely, all three groups described favela tours as dehumanizing using words like `safari tour' or `zoo tour' and felt that their community was being sold as a commodity. However, the interviews showed that all three groups, although had strong opinions about the ethical implications of favela tours, still felt conflicted when comparing it with some of the potential social and economic benefits that it may bring. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Community Resources and Development 2013

Chlodoueci Aduentus : foi et politique en Gaule

Valente, Sylvie January 2012 (has links)

De Rabbe à Baudelaire / Literature and Drugs in the 19th Century France. From Rabbe to Baudelaire

Yogo, Takenori 10 December 2010 (has links)
Broached by Rabelais, Madame de Sévigné and Chardin, the motif of narcotics in literature enjoyed a golden age as early as the first half of the 19th Century, although Homer, Herodotus and Pliny had already described their wonderful effects. Driven by an aspiration to escape to the infinite, or by simple curiosity for an unknown universe, the Romantics started to consume opium and hashish, and started to introduce them into their work as a literary motif in historic and cultural circumstances. This thesis analyses the evolution of the use of drugs in literature, in a wide range of contexts, namely medical, social and anthropological, through the texts of Rabbe, Musset, Balzac, Gautier, Dumas, Nerval, and Baudelaire, and certain cultural phenomena such as the legend of the Order of Assassins and the club des Haschischins at hôtel Pimodan.

Sarah Bernhardt vue du Brésil (1886- 1905) / Sarah Bernhardt seen from Brazil (1886-1905)

Oliveira Moura, Monize 13 November 2015 (has links)
(Granfield, Linda. / This work proposes an analysis of the french actress Sarah Bernhardt's (1844-1923) three tours in Brazil, precisely in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in 1886, 1893, 1905. Taking the thoughts about the flow of artists and the cultural globalization of the 19th century as a background, the present study considers Sarah Bernhardt tours as a precious example of the French theater diffusion process and of the internalization of audiences. In what regards Brazil, it is noticeable that the referred period, marked by a strong foreign artistic presence, is also the moment in which the country’s literate elite reflected about a project of a nation and about the construction of a national dramatic art. The focus of this thesis is, therefore, to locate Sarah Bernhardt’s tours in this panorama. More than a study about French “theatrical influence” in Brazil, our main goal is to ponder about the construction of the Brazilian artistic practice in a context of a broader process of cultural globalization in the 19th century, in which theater played a fundamental role. In what concerns Sarah Bernhardt specifically, this thesis intends to demonstrate the actress’s relevance in this phenomenon. Sarah was a great media star and, at the same time, associated to the french theater erudite repertoire. It attempts, therefore, to understand in what way this “repertory theater” is internationally broadcasted, also impregnating itself with commercial strategies common to the period’s theater industry. In that sense, the construction of the actress’s image abroad, specially in Brazil, is questioned. Also, what part of the cultural “market” Sarah Bernhardt and her managers tried to dominate is evaluated. In other words, how did the actress became Sarah Barnum, with a flair of ambassador of the génie français ?

Preference výběru velikosti ráfků kol u rekreačních a aktivních cyklistů / Wheel size selection preferences in recreational and active cyclists

Růžička, Michal January 2021 (has links)
Title: Wheel size selection preferences in recreational and active cyclists Goals: The goal of the thesis is to find relation between anthropometric and training indicators and selection of bicycle wheel size. Methods: The work is a descriptive study of a sample of randomly picked men and women. The research sample consisted of 250 respondents of the age range 13 - 77, with 106 women and 144 men. The research has been carried out in the form of semi structured website survey. The data have been categorized and analysed using basic statistical methods and the results were interpreted in the charts by the frequency of answers. Results: By analysing the survey results we have found the existing relation between the used wheel size and anthropometric and training indicators. With the growing height and weight of the respondents, the tendency to use 29" wheel size increases, as mentioned 81 respondents in height range 160-199 cm. The research has also shown that older riders use their bikes primarily to the cycling tours and that with the smaller wheel size. The size 29" use only eighteen respondents of the age range 40 - 77. The comparison of training indicators with the used wheel size has proven direct relation between effortfulness of the surface and used wheel size, when 2500 km and more will be...

Tourist guiding in the global South : how “Incredible” is India?

Botha, Christoffel Rudolph January 2020 (has links)
Tourist guides are located at the coalface of the tourism industry and occupy an extraordinary position within the contemporary demand and supply chain, seeing that they have the ability to enhance, manage and orchestrate the tourists sought after “unique” experience through their interpretation and commentary on tour. Within this context, most regard the tourist guide as an “ambassador” and “custodian” of a specific country‟s destination image – with India being no exception. This dissertation explores the complexity and multifaceted-nature of the tourist guiding phenomenon in a global South context, by considering the tourist guide of India as an international tourist guiding best practice example. The investigation will also evaluate key components and practical areas of India‟s tourist guiding domain. That consists of the country‟s national tourism and tourist guiding environments, legislative and regulatory frameworks, educational and training components, quality assurance mechanisms, as well as all other integral functional areas associated with the sector. These various research areas, along with the genesis of guiding, the various roles and responsibilities of a tourist guide, and the contextualisation of “international tourist guiding best practice”, all form the main components of the dissertation. / Dissertation (MSocSci)--University of Pretoria, 2020. / Historical and Heritage Studies / MSocSci / Unrestricted

Interactive user onboarding and its effect on activation rates : A statistical study of feature introductions in applications with complex interfaces

Stål, Filip January 2020 (has links)
User onboarding procedures and digital feature introductions are still in their infancy. Consequently, hard data on its impli-cations and its effects on user behavior is scarce and difficult to come by. To contribute to this field of research, within the context of HCI, this study was conducted. It studies the implementation of a contextually sensitive step-by-step feature in-troduction on a digital platform, presented by a complex and composite interface, providing access to a large number of features. It then proceeds to statistically evaluate the effects of the onboarding implementation on activation rates for which the onboarding was designed to improve.  The study’s findings were that users that received the step-by-step feature introduction were associated with statistically significantly lower mean times spent completing the activation requirements, compared to users that did not. Additionally, users partaking in the feature introduction had higher overall activation rates. The study also provides insight into how user time spent completing the different steps leading up to a successful activation was divided among the steps and discusses its significance for the design of user onboarding experiences in the future.

Engaging Graduate Students in Three Easy Steps: Failures and Successes From Back-to-Back Years

Rosen, Rhonda, Andrade, Raymundo, Justice, Alexander 16 December 2024 (has links) (PDF)
In Fall 2022, three librarians representing the outreach and engagement department and reference and instruction department at Loyola Marymount University’s William H. Hannon Library developed a three-part orientation experience to welcome new theological studies graduate students. The three parts consisted of a 10-minute welcome via Zoom by two outreach librarians; a “meet and greet” library orientation and VIP tour co-presented by an outreach librarian and the librarian for theological studies; and an in-depth instruction session led by the librarian for theological studies. With lessons learned and student feedback collected in Fall 2022, the librarians aimed to improve this three-point plan in Fall 2023. This article presents successes and failures from both years of orientation programs to inform academic librarians aiming to support graduate students at their respective institutions.
