Pieterse, Johannes Jacobus 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Sport Sc)) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigated the effects of a relaxation, self-talk, goal-setting, imagery, and concentration training package on the performance of six athletes in the 1500- meter event. Subjects were four female and two male high school middle distance athletes. The dependent measure was time taken to complete the 1500-meter nm in competition settings. A mental skills training package was developed, implemented and evaluated using a single subject, multiple baseline design. Performance scores were plotted for each 1500-meter nm and subjects' graphs were assessed for intervention-related change against mean performance change and established split-middle analysis criteria. Visual inspection of plotted values was supplemented by quantitive analysis using repeated measures analysis of variance (RANOV A). This study also included procedural reliability checks to ensure that the athletes did in filet utilize the mental skills they received training in. Visual analysis indicated the mental skills package to be effective in enhancing performance times (1500-meter) in the case of four of the athletes. Overall, repeated measures analysis of variance revealed significant improvement in 1500- meter performance times for subjects across phases. However, a split-middle analysis of within subject variation indicated that a significant intervention effect was not observed in two of the six subjects. The social validity assessment by athletes and their two coaches provided further confirmation of the overall effectiveness of the intervention. Social validation checks indicated all participants to have perceived the intervention to be successful and all were satisfied with the delivery and content of the training package. The results support the usefulness of single-subject research designs for assessing the impact of mental training. The present study demonstrated that a mental skills training package combining relaxation, self-ta1k, goal setting, imagery, and concentration skills was effective in enhancing athletic performance.

Vliv strečinku na výkon žáka v atletice / Influence of stretching on performance of pupil in athletics

Nováková, Magdalena January 2019 (has links)
Title: The effect of stretching on performance of youth athletes in track and field Objectives: The difference of views on stretching as part of sports training is great, so this work aims to prove or disprove its effect on performance. The work should contribute to the awareness of domestic athletic trainers and the results will be applied practically. This work also aims to demonstrate whether the rate of shortened muscles affects the pupil's speed and endurance performance. The work is also interested in whether a strictly adhered stretching plan will reduce the amount of shortened muscles. Method: The thesis is conceived as an experimental study. The study was attended by 30 probands who were divided into two groups. To evaluate the results, a standardized test of shortened muscles according to Janda is used, as well as a run measured by hand-held stems for 2x40 and 600 meters. Result: There are great differences in the youth age between individuals with the almost same age and do the same sport. There are individuals who do not have shortened muscles, but those who have shortened almost every muscle group. The rate of shortened muscle does not affect pupil performance in athletics. Performance on the sprinter and endurance track was deteriorated or even improved, regardless of whether there...

”Mother ́s should sit on the bleachers” : Women coaches experience concerning leadership in track and field elite based on equality perspective.

Hansen, Ida January 2019 (has links)
This study aims to investigate how female trainers at elite level in Swedish athletics experience their role as leaders from a gender perspective. Furthermore, it is examined how gender equality work in Swedish athletics looks and how it can be developed. The method used to answer this purpose was qualitative interviews with five women who are trainers at the elite level. The result shows that the experiences are mainly based on the treatment of others in the environment, that they find it difficult to accept and need to work hard to be respected for the job they do. Since the study is small with few respondents, it is difficult to establish a general conclusion but it gives an indication of what these five trainers have experienced. It turns out that in order to get a development regarding gender equality, role models and mentors are needed. The network for the female coaches is important because they can raise experiences and conduct discussions and the associations should pay attention to the issue already at club level. Furthermore, it is examined how gender equality work in Swedish athletics is portrayed and how it can be developed.

The Training Process: Planning for Strength–Power Training in Track and Field. Part 2: Practical and Applied Aspects

DeWeese, Brad H., Hornsby, W. Guy, Stone, Meg, Stone, Michael H. 01 December 2015 (has links)
Planning training programs for strength–power track and field athletes require an understanding of both training principles and training theory. The training principles are overload, variation, and specificity. Each of these principles must be incorporated into an appropriate system of training. Conceptually, periodization embraces training principles and offers advantages in planning, allowing for logical integration and manipulation of training variables such as exercise selection, intensification, and volume factors. The adaptation and progress of the athlete is to a large extent directly related to the ability of the coach/athlete to create and carry an efficient and efficacious training process. This ability includes: an understanding of how exercises affect physiological and performance adaptation (i.e., maximum force, rate of force development, power, etc.), how to optimize transfer of training effect ensuring that training exercises have maximum potential for carryover to performance, and how to implement programs with variations at appropriate levels (macro, meso, and micro) such that fatigue management is enhanced and performance progress is optimized.

The Training Process: Planning for Strength–Power Training in Track and Field. Part 1: Theoretical Aspects

DeWeese, Brad H., Hornsby, W. Guy, Stone, Meg, Stone, Michael H. 01 December 2015 (has links)
The process of strength–power training and the subsequent adaptation is a multi-factorial process. These factors range from the genetics and morphological characteristics of the athlete to how a coach selects, orders, and doses exercises and loading patterns. Consequently, adaptation from these training factors may largely relate to the mode of delivery, in other words, programming tactics. There is strong evidence that the manner and phases in which training is presented to the athlete can make a profound difference in performance outcome. This discussion deals primarily with block periodization concepts and associated methods of programming for strength–power training within track and field.

Skirtingų lengvosios atletikos rungčių traumų pobūdis, dažnis ir taikomas gydymas / Frequency of traumas and their character, and the applied treatment in different events of track-and-field athletics

Kerdokaitė, Kristina 15 May 2006 (has links)
The purpose of work is to determine the character and frequency of traumas encountered in different events of track-and-field athletics, and the influence of physical therapy on decrease of traumas. In order to achieve the goal, we have implemented the tasks, i.e. we determined the character of traumas usually encountered in track-and-field athletics, as well as the traumas suffered by men and women. We determined the frequency of sport traumas, according to the sport experience. We determined the character and localization of traumas, according to the events of track-and-field athletics, as well as the most common treatment methods in case of sport traumas. We learnt whether the physical therapy has the influence on the rise of repeated traumas. While writing the work, we referred to the hypothesis that the character and frequency of traumas depends on the specificity of events of track-and-field athletics, and studied whether the number of traumas decreases if the physical therapy is applied. The work used the following research methods: analysis of scientific literature, oral questionnaires-interview, analysis of the content of documents (data of medical cards). After the research had been made and the results compared to the other authors, we reached the conclusion that the character and localization of the traumas depends on the event of track-and-field event. The lesion encountered the most often is the strain, and the rarest one is abrasion and fatigue fractures... [to full text]
