Influence of Patient Engagement Protocol on Health Outcomes and Medication Adherence of Patients with Metabolic Syndrome

McConnell, Angela H. 01 January 2016 (has links)
August 2016 Management of metabolic syndrome (MetS) may be enhanced by promoting patient engagement. Training health care providers in the conceptual and practical application of integrative patient centered care tools may promote patient lifestyle behaviors for better management of MetS. The purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental study was to assess the impact of training providers in integrative patient centered care for patients with MetS. The biopsychosocial construct provided the conceptual framework for the study. Two groups of physicians were included; one received training in an integrative model (IM) while the second received no training and provided usual care (UC). Following training, patient disease biometrics and medication adherence were monitored for approximately four months. Due to a diminished sample size in the completer data set, an intention to treat (ITT) data set was created with baseline values brought forward. In the ITT set, BMI decreased significantly (p=0.005, d=0.18) with each group over time: (IM: 32.9 -± 7.3 Kg/m2 to 31.6 -± 6.8 Kg/m2) and (UC: 32.1 -± 6.7 to 31.5 -± 6.3 Kg/m2). However, there were no statistically significant differences between these two groups' measures. In the completer set, BMI decreased significantly (p < 0.05, d=0.18) over time with the IM group, but not the UC group: (IM: 35.14 -± 7.9 Kg/m2 to 33.65* -± 7.62 Kg/m2) and (UC: 32.4 -± 6.62 Kg/m2 and (32.4 -± 6.5 Kg/m2); indicating a possible relationship between the intervention training (IM) and improved health outcomes. Thus, providers are assisting patients with important lifestyle choices to better manage MetS, potentially leading to social change around improved patient health care behaviors and advancement in providers' patient centered practices.

The institutionalisation of the SADC protocol on education and training: a comparative study of higher education in two South African countries

Watson, Pamela January 2010 (has links)

Regional integration is being proposed as a means to development in Southern Africa. As a part of the formal agreements regarding this cooperation, a Protocol on Education in the Southern African Development Community region has been signed. This research set out to compare the higher education systems of two Southern African countries and to examine the extent to which this Protocol has had an impact on national policies and practices. The research sought to investigate this by means of exploring the extent to which the Protocol has provided an institutional frame which is guiding the development of higher education policy in each of the two countries. The findings of the study indicate that the Protocol, rather than providing leadership in the area of education policy, is to a large extent a symbolic document, reflective of norms already existent in national policy in the two countries studied.&nbsp / &nbsp / &nbsp / &nbsp / &nbsp / &nbsp /

Learning orientations of FET students: the case of the Applied Learning Programme in a Western Cape FET college

Hamman, Liza January 2011 (has links)

This study investigated the reasons why FET part-time students enrolled at a FET college by examining their learning orientations. Guided by the literature, the focus was on the vocational orientation to learning and orientations to learning were further investigated within the vocational orientation based on orientations developed for part-time students found in the literature. In addition, it was investigated whether students&rsquo / expectations have been met and if they were satisfied with the college experience. Lastly, the study examined the relevance of college learning to the world of work and the contribution it made to the career development of learners in a globalising world.

The research shows that part-time students enrol at FET colleges predominantly for vocational reasons and the majority of the students were enrolled in order to advance their careers and associated with a vocational orientation to learning. However, it emerged that reasons for learning within the vocational orientation to learning are often multi-faceted and complex. The most important findings are 3 new learning orientations for part-time students that were identified: &lsquo / education for a qualification&rsquo / , &lsquo / education for adults who previously made the wrong choice&rsquo / and &lsquo / education for adults as a model for their children&rsquo / . Furthermore, the findings indicate that learners were satisfied with the programme they were enrolled in because they believed that the qualification would enable them to achieve their vocational aims which were primarily to find a new job, to be promoted and to increase their income. The findings suggest that the programme that was examined was relevant to the world of work, promoted employability and that it made a significant and important contribution to students&rsquo / career development in a globalising world.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 1647736 bytes, checksum: 65f9814ce193fab40024fcd2d9c392e3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-06-30 / Religious Education, regulated by Law 9.475/97, as an integral part of the basic education of citizens is a privileged locus for promotion of cultural recognition and assumption of people belonging to minorities, among them people with disabilities, because they present a long-term impairment of physical, intellectual or sensory nature, they are more susceptible to situations of exclusion. Thus, this research has as main objective to investigate the importance of the religious education teacher in special/inclusive education, from the perspective of human rights, in order to strengthen the inclusion process of students with disabilities in school. And the following objectives: contextualize the phenomenon of exclusion/inclusion of persons with disabilities in the mythical and historical time, and the exclusion is evidenced most visibly over time in socioeconomic, religious and education of such persons; present guiding documents aimed at inclusive education, religious education and human rights at the international and national level, seeking dialogue with these three areas of knowledge aiming at the reasoning of including students with disabilities in school; and outline the necessary knowledge for inclusive teaching from the perspective of human rights, with a religious education teacher profile reasoned from the Pedagogy of Autonomy. The dissertation was structured containing an introduction - Through the windows of the soul: resignifying looks! - Three chapters: (1) a glance at the time: the journey between exclusion and inclusion of people with disabilities to stand as a subject of rights; (2) a cutout on the look religious education: leaving the exclusion of proselytizing for the visibility of minorities! (3) The training of religious education teachers from the perspective of human rights: expanding the focus of the look; and the final considerations: a new look on the inclusion of disabled students in school. This study was conducted with a methodological approach as a theoretical-methodological documental and bibliographic research on special/inclusive education, religious education and human rights, always seeking to promote the interface between knowledge, and diversity as a guiding principle. Os princípios políticos e a prática educativa do CESEP: processos formativos de uma ONG em Sergipe: 1988/1998 / The political principles and practice of educational CESEP: formative processes of an NGO in Sergipe: 1988/1998

Figuerêdo, Acácio Nascimento 23 October 2003 (has links)
This study analyses the Political Principles and the Educational Practice of Centro Sergipano de Educação Popular (CESEP) from 1988 to 1998. As well as its institutional nature, its social political role of formation of social movements in Sergipe, and of support for these movements. It interprets the Social Movements, Social Class and Work as explanatory categories for the investigated object. The reseach focuses on the formative processes developed in the educational programs of this NGO`s. In order to accomplish this, it starts with the interpretation of the NGO`s in the context of globalization, emphasising that in Latin America, Brazil, and especially in the Northeast, the apogee of the neo-liberalism, in the 1990`s, determined the new ways of social policies. The work follows the principles of Historical Science in the patterns of Critical-Historical Pedagogy. The conclusion is that CESEP reveals itself as an institution in tune with the neo-liberalism precepts when it comes to its insertion in the global movement proper to the NGO`s, moreover, it presents advances towards the transmission of an Education towards Citizenship , although it is still based on concepts of social rights in the liberal patterns.
