Using the local environment for outcomes-based education: issues raised for INSET by teachers' perceptions of agents of changeBurton, Noreen January 1998 (has links)
South African education is in the process of undergoing what has become known as a "paradigm shift", requiring a change from the familiar transmission method to outcomes-based education (OBE) founded on social constructivist theories oflearning and teaching. Teachers, (45% of whom are poorly qualified), "will play a pivotal role in the success or failure of this change. There is therefore an urgent need to re-educate in-service teachers in the philosophy, and related methodologies underpinning Curriculum 2005. To this end, in-service education courses need to be developed "which will encourage teachers to reconstruct their beliefs about teaching and learning. INSET programmes in the past were aimed at either "topping up" qualified teachers, or "adding on" for under qualified teachers - neither of which have proved successful. It is therefore unlikely that applying similar methodologies to support teachers in the shift to OBE will meet with success, nor will simply "training" teachers to use the new learning programmes. Government documents on Education Policy are calling for teachers to become reflexive practitioners, able to guide learners in their efforts to achieve the critical outcomes which are intended to develop a competent citizenry of lifelong learners. Therefore, teachers ought to be empowered as curriculum developers in their own right. This interpretative case study hoped to find out from teachers themselves what aspects of an activity-based environmental education course acted as change agents in assisting them to begin the shift to constructivist theories of teaching and learning. A variety of research tools were used, including questionnaires, interviews, journals, narratives and concept maps, all of which provided a rich source of data for interpretation. From what was gained from four participants in this research, tentative suggestions for incorporation into the next cycle of action research in future INSET programmes are made.

Previous issue date: 2008-03-18 / The study addresses the theme of the policy of training teachers using the distance education (EAD), reflected in the Agreement between the UNITINS / EDUCON (current EADCON), developed initially in the state of Tocantins from 2000. Its aim explain some of the multiple determinations that formed the policy of initial training of teachers, initially rendered possible by Superior Normal Course. The methodology is based on the literature search, analysis and research virtual documentary. Thus, addresses itself the context of origin of the state of Tocantins and its educational reality. Then, the changes in the neoliberal capitalism and its aspects, as well as the developments (a reengineering), the reform of state and national educational policies, the role of the World Bank, the CEPAL and UNESCO. Thus analyses are the guidelines of these international agencies with emphasis on the adoption of the Distance Education (EAD), combined with a new policy of training teachers. The establishment of the policy of training teachers offered initially in the Tocantins by UNITINS / EDUCON agree with the educational reform implemented in 1990 decade and articulated with neoliberal, interests and the prospect of offering a fast training, focused, funded by students and controlled by the market. In this background there is a release of the state towards the financing and maintenance of the social spheres, among them the education, but his stay as inducer of liberal policies directed to the redevelopment and new demands of the capital.

This investigative study analyses a Course of continuous training for Senior High School teachers, which tackled the youth empowerment and the school. It aimed to permit the reflection about relations established among school, teachers and young people, making possible another look and another comprehension about the ways of production of the contemporary young cultures, the social representations about the young people and their implication in the school culture. It started from an affirmative prospect which intended to give visibility to the diversity/plurality of the youth expressions, in different contexts and experiences, and to permit new relations between generations in the school space. The research methodological strategy was the proposal of a space of continuous training for a group of about 20 teachers that work in different public and private schools in Porto Alegre and suburbs in RS. Two thirds of the teachers work in public schools and the rest works in private schools, beyond 6 educators who coordinate social projects among young people. The universe of the research was not constituted by a random choice, because it tried to include the plurality of youth and the teaching experiences of the schools, which are peculiar in each social context. For the study and investigation with teacher during the continuous training, the proposed themes were about Contemporary Cultures of young people and School, divides in two topics: School Culture and Youth Concept. Related to these topics, authors like, José Gimeno Sacristán, António Nóvoa, Miguel Arroyo, Maurice Tardif and Alberto Melucci, Paulo César Carrano, Marília Spósito, Jorge Baeza Correa, José Machado Pais and Jorge Atílio Iulianelli, constitute, respectively, the main theoretical references of this study. The theme Contemporary Cultures of Young People, proposed as a guideline in the investigative study, made possible to the teachers comprehend how the representations of the school culture and youth cultures, formed along the years, influence school activity and, in this way, the necessity of reconsidering the young people participation in the school space.

This essay deals with teachers’ guides on teaching about sexuality and personal relationships, in particular guides focusing on introductory programmes in languages in upper secondary school and teaching adult immigrants Swedish. The aim is to investigate how the teachers’ guides function as further training for teachers. In Sweden 2016, the number of pupils enrolled in language introductory programmes was rapidly increasing. The number of participants in Swedish language for immigrants was also growing quickly. Teachers are in need of further training in sex and sexuality education and instruction in general, and particularly in this teaching context. It is hard to find teachers with sufficient competence in the field, due to the current general lack of skilled teachers in Sweden. Research on teachers’ guides in Sweden is underdeveloped and previous research on the topic of this essay is virtually non-existent, which makes this a pilot study of sorts. The study focuses on text-analysis, function and normativity. The results show that teachers’ guides respond to teachers’ needs and demands. These specific teachers’ guides affect each other through intertextuality. The norms imbedded in the language used in the teachers’ guides have an influence on teachers reading them.
