Individual behaviour towards authority

The purpose of this research is to explore individual behaviour towards authority. The psychodynamic and phenomenological paradigms are used. Unstructured interviews, conducted on five female consultants, produced themes that provide possible insight into individual behaviour towards authority. These themes were; 'daddy and mommy's little girl', need for attention, approval, to not disappoint and sibling rivalry; anxiety and the use of defense mechanisms; conditions for acceptance and/or comfort; dependency for support; clear and/or rigid boundaries; split in experience towards authority; fear of authority; power struggle; and counterdependency. These themes suggest that individual's project and transfer feelings, fantasies, expectations and wishes of their experiences with their parents, their earliest authority figures, onto other authority figures, for example, their managers. The hypothesis generated was "past experiences with authority figures influences individual experiences and hence behaviour towards present authority figures". / Psychology / M.A. (Industrial Psychology)

Mathematical model of the dynamics of psychotherapy

This is a novel attempt to produce a rigorous mathematical model of a complex system. The complex system under study is the relationship between therapists and their clients. The success of psychotherapy depends on the nature of the relationship between a therapist and a client. We use dynamical systems theory to model the dynamics of the emotional interaction between a therapist and client. We determine how the therapeutic endpoint and the dynamics of getting there depend on the parameters of the model. ... We describe the emotional state of both the therapist and client with coupled, first order, nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODE's). The rate of change of the emotional state of the therapist and client is proportional to their previous state, their uninfluenced state when alone, and an influence function which depends on the state of the other person. We formulated influence functions based on the research literature on psychotherapy and the therapeutic alliance. We then determined the critical points from the intersection of the nullclines and used a numerical ODE solver (Matlab ODE113) to compute the trajectories from different initial conditions. ... No presente estudo foi feita uma investigação qualitativa sobre o discurso de terapeutas e pacientes jogadores patológicos, envolvidos em psicoterapia de orientação psicodinâmica, para que fossem identificados elementos relevantes à formulação de diretrizes para psicoterapia psicodinâmica de curto prazo (PPCP) para jogadores patológicos. O método qualitativo escolhido para este estudo foi a Análise do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo (DSC). Os discursos colhidos de terapeutas e pacientes foram analisados em conjunto a fim de mapear como se deu o processo da perspectiva de ambos. Os objetivos do estudo junto aos terapeutas foram: identificar como se deu a transferência, como se manifestou a resistência, identificar etapas ou seqüências de fases apresentadas pelos Jogadores durante o tratamento psicodinâmico de Jogadores Patológicos. Os objetivos do estudo junto aos pacientes foram: identificar como se deu a percepção sobre o terapeuta e sobre a relação paciente-terapeuta, se houve dificuldades específicas do paciente em relação ao tratamento e relacionamento com o terapeuta e se houve fases de tratamento vividas pelos pacientes entre o início e o término da PPCP. Os resultados mostram a importância da transferência para o tratamento, indicações de como manejar a transferência negativa, a qual se mostrou inescapável. Foram identificadas quatro fases pelas quais o processo psicoterapêutico acontece. Foram identificadas defesas e conflitos típicos do jogador patológico e indicações de manejo eficaz das resistências. Foi possível também verificar a percepção e expectativa dos terapeutas e pacientes com relação ao sucesso terapêutico para este tipo de patologia. Foram levantadas hipóteses teóricas e verificada a importância e formas de se trabalhar assuntos da infância e/ou adolescência do paciente. Foram percebidos aspectos relacionados ao final de tratamento e possibilidades de manejo deste principalmente no caso de psicoterapia com tempo limitado. As conclusões deste estudo apontam para a importância do preparo dos terapeutas no sentido de estarem conscientes sobre as defesas, conflitos e resistências típicas e possibilidades de manejo destes. A postura ativa do terapeuta em psicoterapia breve foi discutida e foi percebida a necessidade de um melhor treinamento dos terapeutas a respeito da finalização do processo. Foram colocadas sugestões de avaliação final do paciente a fim de verificar em que etapa do processo este paciente se encontra e se há necessidade de rever o manejo do final do tratamento e quando não for possível prolongar as sessões fazer o encaminhamento para outro terapeuta. Conclui-se que a partir da análise e comparação entre os discursos foram encontradas, até o presente momento, algumas diretrizes importantes no que diz respeito a PPCP de jogadores patológicos. Estes dados poderão ser organizados em um manual para que os terapeutas possam se preparar para o atendimento visando melhores resultados / This research paper presents the qualitative analysis of the discourse of therapists and of patients who are pathological gamblers, throughout psychodynamic orientation therapy in order to identify elements that are relevant to the formulation of guidelines to short term psychodynamic psychotherapy (PPCP) for pathological gamblers. The method employed in this qualitative study was the Discourse of the Collective Subject Analysis (DSC). The discourses of therapists and patients were jointly evaluated so as to analyze the process from the perspective of both sides involved. The purposes of the study with the therapists were: identify how the transference took place, how the resistance was expressed, and which were stages or sequence of steps revealed by gamblers during the psychodynamic treatment. The purposes of the study with the patients were: identify how the patient assessed the therapist and the relationship patient-therapist, identify if the patient had specific difficulties regarding the treatment and the relationship with the therapist, and if there were different stages experienced by the patients between the beginning and the end of the PPCP. The results of the study show the relevance of transference to the treatment, and indications on how to handle negative transference, which ended up being unavoidable. Four stages were identified during the psychotherapeutic treatment. Defenses and typical conflicts of pathologic gamblers as well as signs of efficient handling of resistances were also identified. Besides, it was possible to observe the perception and expectation of therapists and patients with regard to the therapeutic attainment in this type of pathology. Theoretical hypothesis were analyzed. The importance and forms of working through childhood and adolescence issues were verified. Aspects related to the end of the treatment and its administration were analyzed, especially in the event of psychotherapy for a limited period. The inferences brought in by this study point up the importance of the preparation of therapists in the sense that they have to be fully aware of the defenses, conflicts, typical resistances and administration possibilities. The active attitude of a therapist in a brief psychotherapy was considered necessary and it was found that a better training on the administration of the ending of the treatment is very important. This paper suggests alternatives for the final evaluation of the patient in order to verify the stage in which the patient is and if it is necessary to review the handling of the end of treatment. When it is not possible to extend the sessions, it is suggested redirect the patient to other therapist. Finally, from the analysis and comparison of the discourses, it is possible to conclude that there are, so far, important guidelines for the short term psychodynamic psychotherapy of pathologic gamblers. Such relevant data may be compiled in a manual to be used for the preparation of therapists aiming better results

To this end, aspects of the Theory of the Maturing of D.W.Winnicott and their application in the clinic, such as body holding, regression management and egoic needs are included here. Also discussed are questions of technique, transference and countertransference, involving the abstinence rule, analyst neutrality and the necessary modification of classical psychoanalysis in the care of patients who have suffered from inadequate environmental care in a phase of absolute dependence. Diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, the patient in question was assisted in a task group proposal and in individual consultations when she requested it. It was possible to conclude that in some moments, the attendance to the need for corporal contact - touch to the hands and the hair - proved adequate to unfreeze the environmental fault lived by the patient in the beginnings of its existence; in others, however, it was important to deny her the request in order to safeguard the setting and the psychologist as a real person in the treatment / Este estudo tem como proposta realizar uma reflexão acerca da necessidade de contato físico com a psicóloga de uma paciente borderline atendida em instituição pública. Para tanto, são aqui retomados aspectos da Teoria do Amadurecimento de D. W. Winnicott e sua aplicação na clínica, tais como holding corporal, manejo da regressão e necessidades egoicas. Também são abordadas questões da técnica, da transferência e contratransferência, envolvendo a regra da abstinência, a neutralidade do analista e a necessária modificação da psicanálise clássica no atendimento de pacientes que sofreram falhas de cuidados ambientais numa fase de dependência absoluta. Diagnosticada com transtorno esquizoafetivo, a paciente em questão foi atendida numa proposta de grupo de tarefas e em consultas individuais, quando assim o solicitava. Foi possível concluir que, em alguns momentos, o atendimento à necessidade de contato corporal – toque nas mãos e nos cabelos – mostrou-se adequado para descongelar a falha ambiental vivida pela paciente nos primórdios de sua existência; em outros, porém, foi importante negar-lhe o pedido, de modo a salvaguardar o setting e a psicóloga como pessoa real no tratamento

O manejo da transferência e contratransferência na relação, professor e aluno adolescente : sua função no processo de aprendizagem

A pesquisa articula Psicanálise e Educação, trata da relação professor-aluno adolescente e discute sua importância para a efetivação da aprendizagem. Como temática central, destaca-se o processo da transferência e da contratransferência na perspectiva psicanalítica. O estudo da transferência teve como referencial teórico os textos de Freud no contexto evolutivo de sua obra. Como o conceito de contratransferência foi pouco trabalhado por Freud, recorremos a alguns pós-freudianos para fundamentar nosso estudo; dentre estes ressaltamos as contribuições de Sándor Ferenczi, Paula Heimann, Pierre Fèdida e Luís Cláudio Figueiredo. Os processos da transferência e da contratransferência, que podem ser observados em qualquer relacionamento interpessoal, ganham importância diferenciada no âmbito da relação professor-aluno adolescente. Partindo da convicção de que o manejo da transferência e da contratransferência, na relação professor-aluno adolescente, tem um impacto positivo, ou negativo, sobre o processo da aprendizagem, desenvolvemos a presente pesquisa de natureza qualitativa, observando e escutando professores e alunos acerca de suas experiências no contexto escolar. O locus da pesquisa foi a Escola de Referência em Ensino Médio Francisco Madeiros, localizada no município de Garanhuns (PE), no bairro Magano. Quanto aos resultados alcançados, verificamos, nas narrativas dos professores, fatos que indicam relações positivas, alicerçadas no respeito, admiração e vínculos de amizade. As maiores dificuldades indicadas pelos professores para o estabelecimento de uma boa relação com os alunos foram a falta de respeito, a rebeldia e a agressividade. Quanto aos alunos adolescentes, a afetividade permeia suas relações com os professores e constrõe vínculos positivos de admiração, mas existem também aqueles que se distanciam dos professores devido à rigidez com que são tratados e à desconfiança que este tratamento provoca. A maioria dos alunos apresenta um melhor desempenho nas disciplinas com as quais mantêm um bom relacionamento com o professor. A pesquisa pretende também contribuir para a comunidade escolar, favorecendo uma nova forma de entendimento dos fatores que podem concorrer para uma melhor eficácia do processo de aprendizagem / The research articulates Psychoanalysis and Education, approaches the teacher-teenager student relationship and discusses its importance for an effective learning. The transference and counter-transference that con be observed in any interpersonal relationship, gains differentiated importance in the teacher-teenager student context. Based on the conviction that the management of transference and counter-transference in the teacher-teenager student relationship has a positive or negative impact on the learning process, we developed the current qualitative- nature research, by watching and listening teachers and students about their experiences into the school context. The locus of the research was the school of reference in High School Madeiros Francisco of Garanhuns (PE) in Magano neighborhood. As for reached results, according to the teachers narratives, we found facts indicating positive relationships, based on respect, admiration and friendship bonds. The greatest difficulties pointed by the teachers to establish a good relationship with students were lack of respect, rebellion and aggression. As for teenagers students affectivity permeates their relationship with the teacher and builds positive bonds of admiration, but there also those ones who set apart from the teacher due to the way they are treated and the suspicion provoked by this treatment. Most students show a better performance in subjects with which they have a good relationship with the teacher. The research also intends to contribute to the school community , by promoting a new understanding of factors that may contribute to a better efficiency of the learning process

Text in Afrikaans / It is alarming that psychologists are in many cases insufficiently trained with regard to homosexuality. Against this background and on the basis of a literature study and empirical research, this study aims to provide guidelines to educational psychologists on working with homosexual clients. Within the Educational Psychology, a person's self actualisation rests on three pilars, namely experience, meaning assignation and involvement. The premise of the qualitative research (focus group interviews) used in this study is homosexual persons' experience of psychologists - the investigation was therefore approached from an Educational Psychology viewpoint. Altogether 75% of the focus group respondents' experience of psychologists was negative. The possibility exists that insufficient training may cause insufficient knowledge and insight, which in turn may lead to homosexual persons' negative experiences of psychologists. It is therefore imperative that the aspect of training of psychologists with regard to homosexuality will receive attention. / Educational Studies / M.Ed.

Os processos da transferência e da contratransferência, que podem ser observados em qualquer relacionamento interpessoal, ganham importância diferenciada no âmbito da relação professor-aluno adolescente. Partindo da convicção de que o manejo da transferência e da contratransferência, na relação professor-aluno adolescente, tem um impacto positivo, ou negativo, sobre o processo da aprendizagem, desenvolvemos a presente pesquisa de natureza qualitativa, observando e escutando professores e alunos acerca de suas experiências no contexto escolar. O locus da pesquisa foi a Escola de Referência em Ensino Médio Francisco Madeiros, localizada no município de Garanhuns (PE), no bairro Magano. Quanto aos resultados alcançados, verificamos, nas narrativas dos professores, fatos que indicam relações positivas, alicerçadas no respeito, admiração e vínculos de amizade. As maiores dificuldades indicadas pelos professores para o estabelecimento de uma boa relação com os alunos foram a falta de respeito, a rebeldia e a agressividade. Quanto aos alunos adolescentes, a afetividade permeia suas relações com os professores e constrõe vínculos positivos de admiração, mas existem também aqueles que se distanciam dos professores devido à rigidez com que são tratados e à desconfiança que este tratamento provoca. A maioria dos alunos apresenta um melhor desempenho nas disciplinas com as quais mantêm um bom relacionamento com o professor. A pesquisa pretende também contribuir para a comunidade escolar, favorecendo uma nova forma de entendimento dos fatores que podem concorrer para uma melhor eficácia do processo de aprendizagem
