Hunting Snakes in the Eagle's Nest : Skydd av flygbas med drönare

Olofsson, Anders, Olofsson, Magnus January 2023 (has links)
´The use of unmanned aerial vehicles has not escaped anyone, not least in the Ukraine war. Sweden has operated UAV systems for almost 30 years, but on a relatively small scale. The technology is used to a greater extent by some armed forces. The purpose of our study has been to examine from a development perspective the conditions for the introduction of UAVs for the protection and surveillance of Swedish air bases. The study has an inductive approach where we obtained data throuhg interviews and litterature studies, which were then analyzed with the help of previous research and governing documents. Different types of UAVs, together with existing methods, can significantly increase the effectiveness of the protection and surveillance of air bases, especially the ability to monitor large areas. In parallel with own UAV capacity, the air bases´ability to act against enemy UAVs must also be developed. There are challenges with today´s materiel procurement process which means that it is perceived as slow to introduce new materielsystems, a further decentralization of the decision-making mandate would in this case bring out more agile materiel procurement. Operating with unmanned systems in the same area as own aircraft requires well-functioning coordination. There are methods for this, but they need to be developed and practiced to a greater extent.

A Game of Drones : Cyber Security in UAVs / Att hacka drönare : De vanligaste tillvägagångssätten

Dahlman, Elsa, Lagrelius, Karin January 2019 (has links)
As Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are getting more popular and their area of use is expanding rapidly, the security aspect becomes important to investigate. This thesis is a systematic literature review that examines which type of cyber attacks are most common among attacks directed at civilian use UAVs and what consequences they bring. All cyber attacks presented in the report are categorized using the STRIDE threat model, which risk they pose and what equipment is required for the adversary to follow through with the attack. The findings are that Spoofing and Denial of Service attacks are the most common cyber attack types against UAVs and that hijacking and crashing are the most common results of the attacks. No equipment that is difficult to access is required for either of the attack types in most cases, making the result an indicator that the security state for civilian use UAVs today needs improving.

Assessment of Asymmetric Flight on Solar UAS

Belfield, Eric 01 December 2016 (has links) (PDF)
An investigation was conducted into the feasibility of using an unconventional flight technique, asymmetric flight, to improve overall efficiency of solar aircraft. In this study, asymmetric flight is defined as steady level flight in a non-wings-level state in- tended to improve solar incidence angle. By manipulating aircraft orientation through roll angle, solar energy collection is improved but aerodynamic efficiency is worsened due to the introduction of additional trim drag. A point performance model was devel- oped to investigate the trade-off between improvement in solar energy collection and additional drag associated with asymmetric flight. A mission model with a focus on aircraft orbits was then developed via integration of the point performance model over a set of discrete points. It is shown that there is a non-zero bank angle where optimal net power is achieved for a given aircraft orientation, flight condition, and sun position. The study also shows that there is improvement in overall efficiency over conventional flight for various orbit shapes and winds aloft. This indicates that there is potential value in not only flight path planning, but also in orientation planning for solar aircraft.

Design and Characterization of Phased Arrays for UAS Detection and Tracking

Buck, David 02 August 2022 (has links)
This work continues the development of phased array radar for UAS detection and tracking. The earlier 1D scanning, 4 channel BYU SAA radar is improved upon and replicated to form a network of radars. These are shown to work together for higher level tracking across multiple fields of view. Additionally, a new phased array instrument is designed and constructed with 16 channels, 2D scanning, and improved signal processing algorithms. Preliminary metrics and field results show the operation of this sensor. A new technique for measuring array mutual impedances from embedded element patterns is developed here. This technique uses an antenna range instead of a network analyzer. New mathematical relationships are built to handle cases for practical measurements and field transformations. Demonstration of this method with a 2x2 uniform rectangular array is shown and compares favorably with the mutual impedances traditionally measured with a network analyzer. A new way to measure radiation efficiency using the antenna Y factor method is demonstrated. This method does not require an expensive field measurement chamber and can be done with a simple ground shield and absorber foam. Various X band antennas have their radiation efficiency characterized and compare favorable with known efficiencies.

Linking remotely-sensed UAS imagery to forage quality in an experimental grazing system

Norman, Durham Alexander 06 August 2021 (has links)
Forage quality is a principal factor in managing both herbivores and the landscapes they use. Nutrition varies across the landscape, and in turn, so do the distributions of these populations. With the rise of remote sensing technologies (i.e. satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles, and multi/hyperspectral sensors), comes the ability to index forage health and nutrition swiftly. However, no methodology has been developed which allows managers to use unmanned aerial systems to the fullest capacity. The following methodologies produce compelling evidence for predicting forage quality metrics (such as fiber, carbohydrates, and digestibility) using 5 measured bands of reflectance (Blue, Green, Red, Red Edge, and NIR), 3 derived vegetation indices (NDVI, EVI and VARI), and a variety of environmental factors (i.e. time and sun angles) in a LASSO framework. Fiber content, carbohydrates, and digestibility showed promising model performance in terms of goodness-of-fit (R2= 0.624, 0.637, and 0.639 respectively).

Evaluation of Drone Neutralization Methods using Radio Jamming and Spoofing Techniques / Utvärdering av drönar-neutraliseringsmetoder genom användandet av radiostörning- och spoofingtekniker

Rozenbeek, David Jan January 2020 (has links)
The usage of drones is steadily increasing as drones are becoming more available and useful to the general public, but drone usage also leads to problems as for example airports have had to shutdown due to drone sightings. It has become clear that a counter-drone system must be in place to neutralize intruding drones. However, neutralizing a drone is not an easy task, the risk of causing collateral damage and interfering with other radio systems must be highly considered when designing a counter-drone system. In this thesis a set of consumer drones was selected based on market popularity. By studying the wireless communication links of the selected drones a set of drone neutralization methods was identified. For each neutralization method a set of jamming and spoofing techniques was selected from current research. The techniques was used in practise by subjecting the drones to the techniques in a series of drone behaviour experiments. The results was used to evaluate the techniques in four criteria based on avoiding collateral damage, mitigating radio interference, identification requirement and handling multiple intruding drones. The evaluation was then summarized to discuss suitable drone neutralization methods and jamming & spoofing techniques. The results showed that there are neutralization methods that could potentially avoid causing col- lateral damage for certain drones. A full-band barrage jamming technique was shown to best the best performing based on the evaluation criteria, but was also the technique that theoretically induced the most radio interference. Furthermore, drones operating in way-point mode can only be neutralized using a GNSS jamming or spoofing neutralization method. Also using a GPS spoofing neutralization method was shown to be difficult to implement in practise.

Multi-agent route planning for uncrewed aircraft systems operating in U-space airspace

Ayoub, Yohan January 2023 (has links)
Society today brings a high pace development and demand of Artificial intelligence systems as well as robotics. To further expand and to take one step closer to have Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) working in the cities, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency launched a project that introduces U-space airspace, an airspace where UAVs, for instance, are allowed to operate for commercial services. The problems defined for U-space airspace resemble problems defined in the area of multi-agent path finding, such as scaling and traffic etc., resulting an interest to research whether MAPF-solutions can be applied to U-space scenarios. The following thesis extends the state-of-the-art MAPF-algorithm Continuous-time Conflict based search (CCBS) to handle simplified U-space scenarios, as well as extend other A*-based algorithms, such as a version of the Receding Horizon Lattice-based Motion Planning named Extended Multi-agent A* algorithm with Wait-Time (EMAWT) and an extended A* named Extended Multi-agent A* algorithm (EMA) to handle them. Comparisons of the three algorithms resulted in the EMAWT being the most reliable and stable solution throughout all tests, whilst for fewer agents, the CCBS being the clear best solution.

Thermokarst Landscape Development Detected by Multiple-Geospatial Data in Churapcha, Eastern Siberia

Iijima, Yoshihiro, Abe, Takahiro, Saito, Hitoshi, Ulrich, Mathias, Fedorov, Alexander N., Basharin, Nikolay I., Gorokhov, Alexey N., Makarov, Victor S. 24 March 2023 (has links)
Thermokarst is a typical process that indicates widespread permafrost degradation in yedoma landscapes. The Lena-Aldan interfluvial area in Central Yakutia in eastern Siberia is now facing extensive landscape changes with surface subsidence due to thermokarst development during the past few decades. To clarify the spatial extent and rate of subsidence, multiple spatial datasets, including GIS and remote sensing observations, were used to analyze the Churapcha rural locality, which has a typical yedoma landscape in Central Yakutia. Land cover classification maps for 1945 and 2009 provide basic information on anthropogenic disturbance to the natural landscape of boreal forest and dry grassland. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) with ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 data revealed activated surface subsidence of 2 cm/yr in the disturbed area, comprising mainly abandoned agricultural fields. Remote sensing with an unmanned aerial system also provided high-resolution information on polygonal relief formed by thermokarst development at a disused airfield where InSAR analysis exhibited extensive subsidence. It is worth noting that some historically deforested areas have likely recovered to the original landscape without further thermokarst development. Spatial information on historical land-use change is helpful because most areas with thermokarst development correspond to locations where land was used by humans in the past. Going forward, the integrated analysis of geospatial information will be essential for assessing permafrost degradation.
