Narrative Technique Within Song of SongsKachur, Christine Althea 09 1900 (has links)
The thesis presents one approach to reading the Song of Songs as a unified composition. The first chapter examines the various arguments for unity and disunity that have been put forth in the history of the Song's interpretation. Although no definitive structure based on patterns of repetition seems possible in the Song, the chapter argues that the complex web of repetition in the text points to a unified composition. The second chapter explores the possibility of a regulating structure based on the interaction of voices in the Song. After outlining the various genres evident in the Song, as well as the speaker-addressee relationships within these genres, the chapter argues that such a regulating structure is to be found in the Song's unified discourse setting. This discourse setting consists of two lovers who interact with the Daughters of Jerusalem. The third chapter examines some of the implications of such a unified discourse setting for the interpretation of the Song. The chapter suggests that while the discourse setting is consistent throughout the work, two distinct fictive realms are apparent within the text: one fictive realm deals with the escapades of two lovers; a second fictive realm presents the endeavors of Solomon. The chapter argues for an explanatory relationship between the block of material pertaining to Solomon and the discourse setting of the work. The block of material pertaining to Solomon, because it features the Daughters of Jerusalem as characters, has particular relevance for the Daughters as they reside in the discourse setting of the work. The chapter also argues for a thematic relationship between the stories about Solomon and the narratives and lyrics which deal with the two lovers. The love poetry serves to mold the reader's evaluation of particular images which recur within the Solomonic material. The discourse setting and the two distinct fictive realms work together to convey a negative evaluation of Solomon's treatment of the Israelites, represented metaphorically as the Daughters of Jerusalem within the Song. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

The Problem of Factions Versus Essential Unity in the Church of Corinth: A Study of Causative Factors and Paul's Answer to the ProblemLuthy, Fred H. 20 July 1961 (has links)
I have long been interested in Paul's writings, his various doctrinal viewpoints, and the manner in which he dealt with problems as they developed during his ministry. Certainly, the Corinthian Churoh had its problems, and they were eerious problems. Not the least of these was the matter of a faotious spirit whioh seemed to prevail among the members and whioh was keeping the oongregation from full effectiveness in its witness and work for Jesus Christ. What were the background oonditions out of whioh this Corinthian Churoh oame forth? What types of people comprised this congregation? How and why did these various problems develop? What did Paul do to meet the need? What was his answer to the problems? What does all of this say to us today? These are but a few of the questions with which I am concerned and with whioh I shall deal in this study.

Guidelines for placement of sensors : Placement of sensors in public areaswhile consideringcoverage, cost, and performance.Melin, Oscar, Asperot, Matilda January 2021 (has links)
With the spread of COVID-19, occupancy estimation wason the rise to regulatepeople’smovement in public areasto further decrease the spreadof the diseaseand prepare for future pandemics.Much theory existson the problem of sensor placement, but this theory is mainly treated as a mathematical problem and often not applicable to real-life situationsdue to important real-life factors not being considered. Placing sensors is adifficult task, and it is hard knowingwhere to beginplacing themand what type of sensors to use. The purpose of thisthesis was to help with the problem onplacing sensors by investigatingmethods in a simulated environmentto create guidelines for placing sensors in public areasand evaluatethese placements through a formula. The results are compared to previous researchto prove that it is important to cover different types of hotspots within a building, and where these hotspots canbe foundin general buildings. To truly achieve good sensor placement involves several different things but what is most importantis to be able to track the movement of people, with the number of sensors being as low as possiblewhile still having good coverage. The formula proved to have both benefits and drawbacks, such asthe drawback ofnot consideringwhat kind of sensor is being evaluated. The results should be validatedin a more truthful simulation orin real-lifeto be able to be fully dependent on.

Teaching climate change : Creating and testing an interactive visualization of carbon emissions in order to increase awareness / Att lära ut klimatförändringEkne, Samuel January 2018 (has links)
A gap of knowledge exists between the latest climate change research and the general public. The goal of this thesis is to bridge that gap by making the information more accessible and easier to understand. A proof-of-concept model is created with the goal to visualize carbon emission data, namely size relations between countries, source of emissions per country and the current state of carbon emissions compared to a stated goal (the Paris Agreement), and give the user options to reach said goal by manipulating percentages of renewable energy, electric vehicles, and industry, on a global or local scale.User studies are then performed with members of the target group (students age 13-15) to test whether these visualizations are intuitive and accurately communicates the visualized data. The studies are effective and the goal of the visualization is reached.

Att upptäcka dolda objekt i spel : En undersökning av occlusion culling och dess påverkan i spelscener / To detect hidden objects in games : An analysis of occlusion culling and its affect in game scenesEriksson, Jakob January 2017 (has links)

From Many Logoi to the One Wise: Epistemic Method in HeraclitusFeldman, Sarah 27 October 2022 (has links)
This doctoral dissertation examines the interrelation between three aspects of Heraclitus’ thought: (1) his interest in perspectival or context-dependent conceptions of the opposites; (2) his views on the obstacles to and limitations of human (as contrasted with divine) knowledge; and (3) his conception of reality as a unity, along with the divergent kinds of unity that he associates with the divine and the human perspective.
This dissertation argues that Heraclitus conceives of reality as an undifferentiated unity that can only be understood from a “perspectiveless” state. In other words, reality is such that it can only be grasped from a state unconditioned by the perceptual and cognitive features arising from one’s idiosyncratic “creaturely” constitution – especially one’s needs and values. This perspectiveless state also corresponds to the divine “perspective.”
Heraclitus’ logos, this thesis argues, is a method for recognizing the underlying structure of human thought and discourse, and the view of reality that this structure yields. However, this method, when used consistently and globally, serves to undermine both the logos itself and the human perspective that it reflects. Through an analysis of Heraclitus’ perspective juxtapositions, this thesis shows that a full engagement with the logos’ method of evoking the unity of opposites allows the audience to achieve a (temporary) collapse of perspective and apprehension of reality as a unity free of oppositions and differentiations.
By viewing Heraclitus’ statements concerning human knowledge in this light, we can resolve certain puzzles in Heraclitus’ conception of unity, his preoccupation with the perspectival (despite his rejection of the idiosyncratic) and his attitudes towards human knowledge. The unity of opposites, while not part of the nature of reality, plays an essential part in the common structure of human thought. By cleaving to this common structure, and by engaging fully with the conflicting perspectives which it brings together, and which are equally idiosyncratic with respect to the true nature of reality, the audience overcomes the limitations of the human perspective, and achieves a temporary apprehension of a reality which cannot be grasped from within its constraints.

War and the Home Front: Devon in the First World War, 1914-1918White, Bonnie 10 1900 (has links)

This investigation contributes to the existing scholarship on Britain and the First World War by examining the war's impact on the county of Devon in southwest England. More specifically, this study pays particular attention to how communities, families, and individuals responded to the pressures of war and to what extent social unity was achieved at the county level. By exploring the relationship between the state and its citizens, this dissertation questions the extent to which Devonians were passive and accepting of the sacrifices and hardships that the government required from them, how their experiences were informed, and to what extent class, gender, and religious differences limited public support for the war? While this dissertation argues that Devonians were generally supportive of British participation in the war, that support was provisional and based on the perception of 'equality of sacrifice' - the expectation that the burdens of war would be shared equally throughout the county and across all segments of society. This study reveals that the inequalities of sacrifice and inconsistencies of government policies burdened some groups more than others and led to social disaffection. Rather than promoting solidarity, the war often exacerbated rural/urban tensions, highlighted the social and economic divisions that characterized relations between the communities of northern and southern Devon, and led to frequent and public criticisms of the government's management of the war.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
