A Consequence of Crisis: A Historical Policy Analysis Examining the Relationship between Economic and Military Crises and the Development and Effects of Early Federal Policy in Higher Education during the Twentieth century, 1934 to 1963

Gorgosz, Jon Edward 01 May 2018 (has links)
This study explores the effect of economic and military crises on federal policy growth in higher education from 1932 to 1963. By analyzing federal records, campus materials, newspapers and educational association journals, the papers demonstrates that economic crises led the federal government to institute decentralized state building efforts to resolve the emergency, while military crises resulted in more centralized growth. In addition, the paper also examines the effects of federal growth during the period on different institution types within higher education. The study explores how individual structures at each institutional type—such as missions, financial stability and history—influenced reactions to federal assistance. By examining institutional structures and their interaction with federal policy during the period, the paper provides a more complex analysis of the outcomes of federal growth for land-grant institutions, religious colleges and women’s colleges and universities that enriches the current historical understanding.

Challenges and Opportunities of Mergers and Alliances between Universities

Salam Alani, Shahad, Essam, Abeer January 2013 (has links)
Mergers between small institutions have greatly increased in a short period of time in order to help them become larger and stronger. The purpose of this thesis  is to explore the main motivations behind mergers or alliances between universities, advantages and the possible challenges which they may face in forming these alliances. The research is characterized by the exploratory, descriptive and qualitative approaches. The information in this paper was gathered by a survey (questionnaire) as a primary data and scientific articles as a secondary data. The research shows that there are many elements which the merged institutions have to take in their consideration not just the benefits that they will gain because not conceding them will lead to fail or non-satisfaction to both partners.

Exploring the Use of the Student Readiness Inventory to Develop a Retention Plan for Incoming Freshmen in the College of Agriculture at Utah State University

Allen, Lisa B. 01 May 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to utilize the Student Readiness InventoryTM to profile retention and academic success rates for College of Agriculture freshmen. The Student Readiness Inventory (SRI) has been developed to help measure psychosocial issues related to academic achievement and college student retention. This information, combined with high school grade point average and admission test scores from American College Testing (ACT, Inc.), will help advisors and administrators in the College of Agriculture identify potential at-risk students during their first year of college. From SRI test results, a model for intervention will be built to meet the students' specific psychosocial needs, encouraging their persistence in obtaining a degree, and enhancing their college experience. Fifty-five incoming freshmen completed the SRI survey. Overall mean scores indicated that the students scored lower in psychosocial skills including social activity, study skills, academic self-confidence, and communication skills. Student SRI summary profile information will be provided to advisors and administrators to identify and help students who may be "at-risk" for dropping out of school before completing their degrees. The SRI information can help advisors and administrators in designing intervention programs or activities to assist students with improving abilities where they may be deficient. Further utilization of the SRI program may provide data on student trends with regard to retention and academic success for students in the College of Agriculture at Utah State University.

A study of the job training needs of the support staff in the six Kansas Board of Regents university libraries

Zhang, ShaLi January 1900 (has links)
Doctor Of Philosophy / Department of Curriculum and Instruction / Rosemary Talab / The purpose of this study was to learn the perceived training needs of the support staff in the six Kansas Board of Regents’ (KBOR) university libraries. Based on data from field and pilot studies and advice from an expert panel, a survey instrument was designed to assess library support staff’s perceptions of their train needs on computer skills, interpersonal skills, supervision/management skills, important library/organizational support, helpful training delivery methods, and training sources. The survey instrument was administered to the entire 167 support staff in the six KBOR university libraries, with a return rate of 83 percent achieved through two mailings and two postcard reminders. Quantitative data from the responses to closed-ended questions were analyzed through descriptive measures and one-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Qualitative approaches to code answers from open-ended questions were utilized in order to allow stakeholder themes to emerge. Quantitative analyses indicated that the respondents viewed the most important training topics for each area of the study to be: database searching and MS Office suites for computer skills; working with difficult people and managing priorities for interpersonal skills; training new employees and supervising student employees for supervision/management skills; being supplied with appropriate software, release time, and technical support were viewed as the most important library support that would help their training. The respondents perceived classroom instruction with a teacher and interactive classroom discussions as being the most helpful delivery methods. The respondents considered in-house trainers, supervisors, and co-workers as being the most helpful training sources. A series of MANOVA tests were conducted on the six areas of the study. At the alpha = .05 level, statistically significant differences were found in the respondents’ perceptions of training needs on computer skills measured by their work units, supervision/management skills measured by their work units and level of job responsibilities, the respondents’ perceptions of important library/organizational support measured by their total years in the library filed and age range, and the respondents’ perceptions of helpful training sources measured by their total years at current positions. Qualitative analyses provided 314 units of information on 32 themes on additional training topics, library/organizational support, delivery methods, and training sources. The top 10 themes were related to “Software programs,” “Windows operating systems,” “Release time,” “Supervisor/management support,” “Relevance/applicable training,” “Promotion/opportunities,” “Training for motivation,” “Classroom with feedback,” “Training materials,” and “One-on-one and in-house training.” Based on the findings, summaries, and conclusions of this study, the researcher made recommendations for further study that focuses on job training needs of support staff at university libraries, including a broader scope of training topics, motivating factors, the perceptions of library administrators on the support staff’s training needs, training needs on supervision/management for non-supervision support staff, differing views on library/organizational support, different training delivery methods, etc.

The efficacy in the development and implementation of the California high school exit exam and the eighth-grade algebra 1 policy

Stovall, Theresa A. 01 January 2011 (has links)
This case study analyzed the roles development and implementation have had in the Eighth-grade Algebra I policy and the California High School Exit Exam policy. From a political, economical, and historical perspective, the intended purposes of many education policies have been distorted due to implementation. By investigating national and California education policies, this case study describes the roles development and implementation have had education policies. In addition, this case study found that the state of education in California is reliant on many mitigating factors affecting education policy development and implementation: Budget cuts, achievement gaps particularly with children of color, and teacher qualification issues. However, systemic education reform requires policy makers to juggle their political affiliations and the needs of students to create policies that improve curriculum, improve student achievement, and supports teachers and administrators. When policy makers do not utilize informed constituencies to assist in policy development, mandates such as the Eighth-grade Algebra I policy are created. Well developed and researched education policies like the California High School Exit Exam, which took about six years to develop before it was implemented in California, was successful because it involved collaboration of various interest groups, educators, local education agencies, and school administrators. Policy makers must learn to work in collaboration with its constituency to develop policies that empower schools to sustain and extend greater individualization on one hand, and broaden community interest on the other. The future of California schools in regard to the Race to the Top policies remain to be seen, but if policy makers rely on the informed voices of education researchers, constituents who are willing to put students' needs before their own political conquests, school administrators, teachers, parents, and students, then California's school will have a future of systemic reform that will be bright.
