Large-Sample Logistic Regression with Latent Covariates in a Bayesian Networking Context

Wang, Junhua 01 August 2009 (has links)
We considered the problem of predicting student retention using logistic regression when the most important covariates such as the college variables are latent, but the network structure is known. This network structure specifies the relationship between pre-college to college variables and then from college to student retention variables. Based on this structure, we developed three estimators, examined their large-sample properties, and evaluated their empirical efficiencies using WKU student retention database. Results show that while the hat estimator is expected to be most efficient, the tilde estimator was shown to be more efficient than the check method. This increased efficiency suggests that utilizing the network information can improve our predictions.

The Relationship Between Physical Activity Levels And Time Management Skills Among Selected University Students

Dincay, Hulya 01 June 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the physical activity levels and the time management practices of selected university students, and to identify the differences between physical activity levels and time management practices in terms of gender. The subjects of this study were 128 male (55,9%) and 101 female (44,1%) university students from six universities in istanbul, Turkey which were selected on a volunteer basis. The Physical Activity Assessment Questionnaire (PAAQ) and the Time Management Questionnaire (TMQ) were used to gather data. The data were analyzed by employing a Statistical Package for Social Statistics. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. The level .05 of significance was selected. There was significant correlation between total hours spend in a week and time planning, and negative correlation between time wasters. There was significant correlation between total MET spend in an hour and time attitudes, between total MET intensities and time attitudes. According to Chi-squared analysis gender difference is dependent of the PA levels in terms of &ldquo / sport MET&rdquo / and &ldquo / total MET&rdquo / intensities. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) indicated a significant main effect. Subsequent unvaried analysis indicated differences in Time Management in terms of gender.

Self-efficacy beliefs of assistant residence hall directors at Ball State University / Self efficacy beliefs of assistant residence hall directors at Ball State University

Lichterman, Hilary L. January 2004 (has links)
While the graduate assistantship experience exists as an opportunity for aspiring professionals to gain practical experience, little research exists regarding one's selfefficacy beliefs related to specific responsibilities of an assistantship. This study of assistant residence hall directors at Ball State University aided seasoned Student Affairs professionals as they trained, supervised and mentored graduate students. Four first-year and four second-year assistant residence hall directors and three full-time residence hall directors, who were alumni of the graduate program and assistantship at the University were interviewed during April of the Spring 2004 semester. The researcher created an interview guide using Bandura's (1977) concept of self-efficacy. The researcher and later an unbiased individual identified themes within the data and offered recommendations for the application of the findings as well as recommendations for possible future studies. / Department of Educational Studies

No. of bitstreams: 1 Sandra Lia R Franco.pdf: 2974622 bytes, checksum: 93fd549e5c9eaf8f88502bd99397537a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-02-22 / The non specialized printed media shows several pieces concerning university students and this thesis aims to verify which psycho-social aspects are most frequently included. Selected news about university students were chosen from Folha de S. Paulo, O Estado de S. Paulo and A Tribuna newspapers. The news analysis was led by the Ryad Simon s Adaptative Evolution Theory, especially with the concern of adaptative sectors named relational-affective, productive, organic and social-cultural. It was verified that the printed media cares more intensively of the students productive and social-cultural sectors rather than the relational-affective and organic ones. Aiming to investigate the journalists way of thinking about these results, they were requested to fill out a questionnaire and it was verified that the majority of journalists are aware of the productivity and social-cultural sectors relevancy, but still consider all adaptative sectors presence important in their articles.

The overall objective was to verify from the point of view of the existence of the university health promotion in the classroom. We opted for a method employed descriptive and exploratory content analysis. The author used interviews of 15 students of pedagogy, law and business administration courses for several semesters. The results indicate that respondents have a perception about the concepts of health promotion, particularly as regards health as a combination of wellness and good maintenance of the aspects that characterize the physical and mental health. Some respondents said that the play would be capable of use only in courses aimed at training for teaching practice. The classroom can be understood as a space to promote health and trigger the creative processes in learning. It was pointed out also the possibility of keeping open the channels which enable the improvement of mental health by conducting recreational activities knowing that they bring benefits not only in the socialization process necessary to cope with everyday situations that permeate the school environment, but above all, in maintaining a relational environment that can bring benefits in all aspects of school life.

Monitoring užívání společensky tolerovaných návykových látek u studentů vysokých škol / Monitoring of Socially Tolerated Addictive Substances in Students at the University

TEPLÁ, Simona January 2009 (has links)
The Czech Republic is one of those countries where it is possible to monitor a trend of excessive hard drinking; and the alcohol consummation is quite common and tolerated phenomenon in this country, the same as smoking of tobacco products. The society toleration is high within this field. Experimenting with habit-forming substances is an integral part of this period; therefore just this became the target of my thesis. The theoretical part brings the knowledge of individual socially tolerated habit-forming substances (alcohol, tobacco, excessive use of medicines, caffeine and anabolic substances) and of the related problems. Furthermore, this part contains specifics of university population. The aim of this thesis was to map the problem of the socially tolerated habit-forming substances in university students in term of the students{\crq} preferences and attitudes towards such substances. Simultaneously, the thesis was to verify two forward hypotheses. This verification was followed by the chosen questioning method by means of questionnaires. The questionnaires were addressed to students of the South Bohemian University in České Budějovice. The research set to collect the questionnaire data is made up by 213 respondents as a whole. H1 Hypothesis supposed that university students use the socially tolerated habit-forming substances to a higher degree during the examination period. This hypothesis was not verified. H2 Hypothesis supposed that the student hostel life encourages and increases use of the socially tolerated habit-forming substances. The observed results brought the verification of such hypothesis. The attitude of the students towards the socially tolerated habit-forming substances is predominantly positive. The thesis brought new knowledge and mapped the situation within the socially tolerated habit-forming substances abuse in university students; hence it can serve to implementation of the effective prevention focused on this specific group.

Gestão de carreira no início da carreira profissional: um estudo sobre atitude de carreira de jovens discentes da graduação da FEA/USP / Career management at the beginning of the professional career: a study on the career attitude of students from FEA/USP

Irineu Soares de Camargo 18 November 2016 (has links)
Studies on career management, whether organizational or individual, are something new in literature. Currently, it is understood that the responsibility for the career management is of the person and that its consolidation takes place over the experiences of personal and professional life. With the changes arising from globalization, new technologies and increased competition, the work\'s psychological contract migrated from a lifetime employment model to an independence and autonomy model, where the individual is responsible for the management and development of his own career. These changes influenced the concept of career and demanded the development of theories that consider aspects related to mobility, the search of a meaning to work and psychological success, such as boundaryless career and protean career. Considering the scarcity and the need for empirical studies in Brazil on the subject, this study aimed to identify and analyze if the career atitude of university students is related to the new career theories. The career profile groups the individuals according to the presence of protean career attitudes, represented by self-direction dimensions and values orientation, and attitudes of a boundaryless career, represented by the dimensions of psychological mobility and physical mobility. This is a descriptive research with quantitative and qualitative characteristics. Data collection was performed by applying a questionnaire, whose scales were validated in the United States and Brazil, as well as conducting interviews. The sample is not probabilistic and intentional and was formed by 140 undergraduate students of USP\'s School of Business, Economics and Accounting. The validation of the career attitude scale was made by the analysis of reliability and internal consistency of the survey instrument based on SPSS - Statistical Package for Social Sciences. The results obtained through the factorial analysis technique were satisfactory in terms of reliability, using the SPSS software. Based on statistics, the overall scoresof protean careers and boundaryless career presented a positive relation, indicating the existence of a general correlation between the two career models for this study\'s sample. Theresults of this research, in general, indicate the presence of targeting by values, career selfdirection, physical and psychological mobility, indicating that respondents have career attitudes favorable to face the changes required by the labor market. These attitudes are more relevant to those who made the Career Management discipline, which was also confirmed by interviews. Thereby, it is concluded to be relevant to discuss career management at the beginning of the career of these young students, who are entering the labor market. For these young people, these new careers are a reality, even if it is verified to be a movement, and can not be considered as a fact for all individuals surveyed. Follow the career path of these students, expanding research with other variables, will add to the study greater details on the slopes careers of these individuals. The discussions of this work, besides contributing to the reflections on the career management business in Brazil, opens doors for research with graduates who are in the labor market longer, expanding the discussion of correlation results between protean and boundaryless career models.

Students' perceptions of service quality levels of students housing at the large metropolitan university

Elie, Sammy Abraham January 2013 (has links)
The increasing attention to the provision of accessible, decent, safe and academically appropriate student housing in South Africa has led to a closer investigation of the nature and levels of quality in both on-campus and off-campus student accommodation. Nationwide, student housing management recognises that quality student housing is of great importance to both the quality of the higher education system and the success of students. In recent years, many studies in the field of service quality have been conducted within higher education. However, fewer studies have focused specifically on service quality in student housing. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perceptions of students with regard to service quality levels in on-campus and off-campus student housing at NMMU, and to identify those service quality dimensions that need attention. A literature review was conducted to explore the meaning and nature of service and quality in student housing. It was concluded that from the different facets of service that quality, customer expectations, customer perception and customer satisfaction are important constructs in evaluating fully the levels of service quality. An amended SERVQUAL instrument comprising 41 items was used for students, in order to evaluate the service quality at on-campus and accredited off-campus student housing at NMMU. The results showed that there are significant differences in the service quality dimensions of on-campus student housing and off-campus student housing. Oncampus student housing gleaned a positive assessment for the dimensions of reliability, responsiveness, empathy and assurance. However, negative perceptions prevail with regard to on-campus infrastructural/tangible issues. The off-campus student housing fell short in a number of service-quality dimensions, including reliability, empathy, responsiveness and infrastructural/tangible issues. The assurance dimension received positive assessments for both on-campus and off-campus student housing. The study proposes that the NMMU student housing management pay attention to the shortcomings and make the desired improvements. The findings of this treatise have practical implications for student-housing managers, as they could direct their resources to improving poor service dimensions, and similarly refine marketing strategies, so that students’ needs are met in an exceptional and satisfactory manner.

Osobní organizace vysokoškolských studentů / Personal management of university students

Dejmalová, Lenka January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to explore the first-year undergraduates' strategies of self-management. The thesis contains the theoretical and empirical part. The theoretical part deals with the transformation of higher education in Europe and in the Czech Republic followed by the changes in the university student career and lifestyle. Special attention is devoted to university socialization, the personality of the university student and their new roles. The next chapter of the theoretical part presents the concepts of personal management and academic self-management. Effective and successful university study and personal strategies of self-management then appear to be interdependent. The aim of the qualitative research is to explore and describe how the first-year students organize their study. Firstly, the content analysis of selected study plans was carried out and the orientation questionnaire survey was conducted among 165 first-year students at the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. Later, also other methods were applied: the diary of study week and electronic interviews. The data were analysed through open coding and thematic coding. Two basic types of students were distinguished based on the dominant out-of-class activities and the diversity of tendencies in independent...
