The User Perspective on Recorder Functionality and Navigation Management : Result from a usability evaluation of a Personal Video RecorderClaesson, Teresia January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to evaluate and give suggestions for interaction improvements to a user interface in a Personal Video Recorder. The study will focus on user learnability, user satisfaction, usability problems from the user interaction with the product and to make a set of interaction improvements. The participants performed a set of predefined tasks involving the recorder functionality and channel lists. The study involved three trials with seven tasks in each trial. The study showed that the time difference for Learnability – Time-on-Task between all trials were statistical significant for the user interface. The study also revealed a set of usability problems that were classified into different severity ratings. A Usability Evaluation of a Personal Video Recorder : Navigation and channel list management from a user perspectiveTanja, Rastad January 2011 (has links)
This thesis aimed to evaluate the user interaction with a Personal Video Recorder software in development by Zenterio. The evaluation focus was on learnability, satisfaction, identification of usability issues and proposing redesign to solve them. A user test with eleven participants was carried out, measuring task success, completion time, lostness, post-task satisfaction and post-session satisfaction across three trials. The seven user tasks concerned mainly channel lists and recording functionality; the former is examined closer in this paper. The results showed that the channel lists were somewhat difficult to manage initially but fairly quickly learned. The satisfaction was lower in the beginning and high after three trials. The results across all tasks followed similar learnability patterns and the overall satisfaction with the interface interaction pointed at the need of improvements. Nine usability issues were discovered concerning channel lists and navigation; they were rated by severity and redesign proposals were given. The issue with the strongest impact on the success of the interaction was the difficulty to find out how to open the submenus.

With the industrial revolutions, there have been challenges to deal with producing goods from limited natural resources while keeping the negative environmental impacts low. The potential impact and contribution from Industry 4.0 are increasingly growing attention. Industry 4.0 allows access to a large amount of data, which can be used to increase knowledge and awareness of unsustainable production performance, and empower more sustainable decision-making. To preserve the advantages of the transition to Industry 4.0, advanced visualization techniques for data-oriented operations are needed to get the full value of available data. One core Industry 4.0 technology that could help display information on a new level is augmented reality. However, there is a lack of studies evaluating the usability of augmented reality in an industrial context. With the purpose to investigate how visualization techniques can be implemented to increase the sustainability of a production line, a solution that could be visualized using a monitor, mobile-augmented reality, or augmented reality with a head-mounted display is presented. The usability of the dashboard solution is evaluated with user testing, which is conducted at Scania in Södertälje, Sweden. A mix of qualitative and quantitative research methodology is used, where an empirical study took place in a laboratory environment. Measurements and questionnaires provide quantitative data for empirical evidence, whereas qualitative data as open questions and thinking aloud isincluded to support the concluding summary. The study concludes with a framework capable of collecting live sensor data and visualizing it through various media. Additionally, the monitor is the most efficient media, and the most satisfying media overall. The mobile media have the highest effectiveness.

Content Management Systems (CMS) can support the creation and maintenance of an e-commerce website and its content. Together with the advance of mobile technology and Internet, it is now possible for business owners to manage their online store using their mobile touchscreen devices. This thesis aims to define the usability problems of the existing CMSs when they are used on mobile touchscreen devices. Heuristic evaluation was performed in three CMSs in order to gain a better understanding of how CMS on touchscreen works and what are the major issues that could downgrade usability. Based on the results of the evaluation, a prototype was implemented and evaluated in order to find out if the design characteristics of the prototype can enhance usability. The impact of the prototype is discussed in terms of efficiency and heuristics violations. Moreover, design guidelines are suggested and uncovered usability problems for further research are provided. / Innehållshanteringssystem (från engelskans Content Management System, CMS) kan stödja skapandet ochunderhållet av en e-handelswebbplats och dess innehåll. Utvecklingen av mobilteknik och internet har gjort detmöjligt för företagare att hantera sin webbutik med hjälp av sina mobila enheter. Denna studie syftar till attdefiniera användbarhetsproblemen hos befintliga CMS när de används på mobila enheter. En heuristiskutvärdering av tre CMS utfördes för att få en bättre förståelse av hur CMS fungerar på en pekskärm, samt för attidentifiera de största problem som kan minska användbarheten. Baserat på resultaten av utvärderingenutvecklades och utvärderades en prototyp för att ta reda på om prototypens designegenskaper kunde förbättraanvändbarheten. Prototypens inverkan diskuteras med avseende på effektivitet och heuristiska oegentligheter. Designriktlinjer föreslås och funna användbarhetsproblem presenteras för vidare forskning.

Las aplicaciones Web son consideradas actualmente un elemento esencial e indispensable en toda actividad empresarial, intercambio de información y motor de redes sociales. La usabilidad, en este tipo de aplicaciones, es reconocida como uno de los factores clave más importantes, puesto que la facilidad o dificultad que los usuarios experimentan con estas aplicaciones determinan en gran medida su éxito o fracaso. Sin embargo, existen varias limitaciones en las propuestas actuales de evaluación de usabilidad Web, tales como: el concepto de usabilidad sólo se soporta parcialmente, las evaluaciones de usabilidad se realizan principalmente cuando la aplicación Web se ha desarrollado, hay una carencia de guías sobre cómo integrar adecuadamente la usabilidad en el desarrollo Web, y también existe una carencia de métodos de evaluación de la usabilidad Web que hayan sido validados empíricamente. Además, la mayoría de los procesos de desarrollo Web no aprovechan los artefactos producidos en las fases de diseño. Estos artefactos software intermedios se utilizan principalmente para guiar a los desarrolladores y para documentar la aplicación Web, pero no para realizar evaluaciones de usabilidad. Dado que la trazabilidad entre estos artefactos y la aplicación Web final no está bien definida, la realización de evaluaciones de usabilidad de estos artefactos resulta difícil. Este problema se mitiga en el desarrollo Web dirigido por modelos (DWDM), donde los artefactos intermedios (modelos) que representan diferentes perspectivas de una aplicación Web, se utilizan en todas las etapas del proceso de desarrollo, y el código fuente final se genera automáticamente a partir estos modelos. Al tener en cuenta la trazabilidad entre estos modelos, la evaluación de estos modelos permite detectar problemas de usabilidad que experimentaran los usuarios finales de la aplicación Web final, y proveer recomendaciones para corregir estos problemas de usabilidad durante fases tempranas del proceso de desarrollo Web.
Esta tesis tiene como objetivo, tratando las anteriores limitaciones detectadas, el proponer un método de inspección de usabilidad que se puede integrar en diferentes procesos de desarrollo Web dirigido por modelos. El método se compone de un modelo de usabilidad Web que descompone el concepto de usabilidad en sub-características, atributos y métricas genéricas, y un proceso de evaluación de usabilidad Web (WUEP), que proporciona directrices sobre cómo el modelo de usabilidad se puede utilizar para llevar a cabo evaluaciones específicas. Las métricas genéricas del modelo de usabilidad deben operacionalizarse con el fin de ser aplicables a los artefactos software de diferentes métodos de desarrollo Web y en diferentes niveles de abstracción, lo que permite evaluar la usabilidad en varias etapas del proceso de desarrollo Web, especialmente en las etapas tempranas. Tanto el modelo de usabilidad como el proceso de evaluación están alineados con la última norma ISO/IEC 25000 estándar para la evaluación de la calidad de productos de software (SQuaRE).
El método de inspección de usabilidad propuesto (WUEP) se ha instanciado en dos procesos de desarrollo Web dirigido por modelos diferentes (OO-H y WebML) a fin de demostrar la factibilidad de nuestra propuesta. Además, WUEP fue validado empíricamente mediante la realización de una familia de experimentos en OO-H y un experimento controlado en WebML. El objetivo de nuestros estudios empíricos fue evaluar la efectividad, la eficiencia, facilidad de uso percibida y la satisfacción percibida de los participantes; cuando utilizaron WUEP en comparación con un método de inspección industrial ampliamente utilizado: La Evaluación Heurística (HE). El análisis estadístico y meta-análisis de los datos obtenidos por separado de cada experimento indicaron que WUEP es más eficaz y eficiente que HE en la detección de problemas de usabilidad. Much traditional user interface evaluation is conducted in usability laboratories, where a small number of selected users is directly observed by trained evaluators. However, as the network itself and the remote work setting have become intrinsic parts of usage patterns, evaluators often have limited access to representative users for usability evaluation in the laboratory and the users' work context is difficult or impossible to reproduce in a laboratory setting. These barriers to usability evaluation led to extending the concept of usability evaluation beyond the laboratory, typically using the network itself as a bridge to take interface evaluation to a broad range of users in their natural work settings. The over-arching goal of this work is to develop and evaluate a cost-effective remote usability evaluation method for real-world applications used by real users doing real tasks in real work environments. This thesis reports the development of such a method, and the results of a study to:

The heuristic evaluation method was found to be an appropriate method for the evaluating the usability of the software as well as the direct accessibility support provided on the DD. Este trabalho relaciona elementos das áreas de Computação e Saúde para comporem a elaboração de uma metodologia para avaliação de usabilidade de sistemas de transcrição automática de laudos na área de Radiologia. Inicialmente, é apresentado um estudo realizado sobre a área de Interface do Usuário Baseada em Voz que identifica requisitos para os sistemas que trabalham com comunicação mediada por voz assim como as iniciativas no sentido de se criar uma metodologia para sua avaliação. Em seguida é realizado um estudo dos sistemas de transcrição automática de laudos, no qual os principais requisitos são caracterizados e classificados. Os dois estudos acima citados foram integrados para a elaboração de uma metodologia para a avaliação de Sistemas de Transcrição Automática de Laudos em Radiologia. A metodologia foi, então, validada previamente através de inspeções e testes de usabilidade realizados fora do ambiente hospitalar, através do uso de um sistema de transcrição automática de laudos em Radiologia. Posteriormente, a metodologia foi também aplicada a um hospital da cidade de São Paulo. Como resultado principal foi proposto um guia bastante detalhado para se avaliar os Sistemas de Transcrição Automática de Laudos em Radiologia, cada vez mais presentes em hospitais e clínicas no país, além dos relatos das experiências obtidas com a aplicação desta metodologia em um caso real. / This work combines knowledge from Computer Science and Health Science in order to propose an evaluation methodology for Automatic Transcription System of Radiology Reports. At first a study regarding a Voice User Interface is presented, this interface identifies the requirements for Spoken Language Dialogue Systems and it can also be used as a tool for an evaluation methodology. Following, a study of automatic transcription systems is presented; in this study the main requirements are listed and classified. Both studies were integrated to allow a new methodology to evaluate an Automatic Transcription System in Radiology. This methodology was previously validated through some inspections and usability tests outside the hospital environment and afterword the methodology was used in a hospital in São Paulo city. As a main result it was proposed a very detailed guide for evaluating the Automatic Transcription Systems Reports in Radiology, increasingly found in hospitals and clinics in this country, apart from reports on experiences gained in applying this methodology in a real case.

A filmagem e a verbalização são métodos de teste de usabilidade considerados fundamentais para apoiar a avaliação da usabilidade de software, pois permitem ao avaliador coletar dados reais da capacidade de interação de um sistema e sua influência sobre o usuário. Os testes são, geralmente, realizados com usuário reais do software para que os mesmos possam submeter a interface as mais diversas situações. Embora eficazes, a filmagem e a verbalização são pouco eficientes, pois necessitam de muito trabalho para análise dos dados coletados e identificação de problemas de usabilidade. Pesquisas já realizadas na área apontam para um tempo de análise de duas a dez vezes o tempo do teste. Este trabalho teve como objetivo desenvolver um ambiente computacional que utilizava eventos de pronuncia de palavras chave e reações faciais para apoiar o processo de coleta, análise e identificação de interfaces com possíveis problemas de usabilidade de forma rápida e segura. O ambiente foi composto por um aplicativo que monitorava (em segundo plano) a utilização de um determinado aplicativo registrando palavras chave pronunciadas pelo participante e imagens faciais em determinados intervalos de tempo. Além destes dados, imagens das telas do sistema (snapshots) também eram registrados a fim de indicar quais interfaces eram utilizadas no momento de um determinado evento. Após a coleta, estes dados eram organizados e disponibilizados para avaliador com destaques para eventos que poderiam indicar insatisfação do participante ou possíveis problemas na utilização. Foi possível concluir que os eventos relacionados à verbalização com palavras chave foram eficazes para apoiar a tarefa de análise e identificação de interfaces problemáticas, pois as palavras estavam relacionadas com classificadores que indicavam satisfação ou insatisfação por parte do usuário. A atividade de verbalização se mostrou mais eficiente quando a análise de seus dados foi aplicada em conjunto com as imagens faciais, pois permitiram uma análise mais confiável e abrangente. Nesta análise, o avaliador teve condições de identificar quais interfaces do sistema foram mal classificadas pelo usuário e qual era o foco de visão/utilização do usuário no momento do evento. Para análises efetuadas com utilização de palavras chave com/sem utilização de imagens, o tempo gasto para identificar as interfaces e possíveis problemas foi reduzido para menos de duas vezes o tempo de teste. / Filming and verbalization are considered fundamental usability test methods to support software usability evaluation, due to the reason that allows the evaluator to collect real data about the software interaction capacity and how it influences the user. Besides these data, snapshots of the interfaces were registered in order to present which interfaces were in used in the event moment. After the collect stage, these data were processed and available to the evaluator with highlights to events that could indicate unsatisfactory events or potential utilization problems. In this research, was possible to conclude that the verbalization events using key words were effective to support the analysis and identification of problematic interfaces because the words were related to specific context that indicated the user opinion. The verbalization activities were more effective in the moments that the data analysis was performed using the face images to support it, allowing more reliable and comprehensive data analysis. In this analysis, the evaluator was able to identify which interfaces were classified negatively by the participant and which was the user focus of view/use in the event moment. In analysis performed using key words and/or not using the face images, the time to identifying the interfaces and potentials usability problems was reduced to less than twice the time of test.
