Context aware voice user interface

Demeter, Nora January 2014 (has links)
In this thesis I address the topic of a non-visual approach for interaction on mobile,as an alternative to their existing visual displays in situations where hands free usageof the device is preferred. The current technology will be examined through existingwork with special attention to its limitations, which user groups are currently using anysort of speech recognition or voice command functions and look at in which scenariosare these the most used and most desired. Then I will examine through interviews whypeople trust or distrust voice interactions and how they feel about the possibilities andlimitations of the technology at hand, how individual users use this currently and wheredo they see the technology in the future. After this I will develop an alternative voiceinteraction concept, and validate it through a set of workshops.

Design and Implementation of Convex Analysis of Mixtures Software Suite

Meng, Fan 10 September 2012 (has links)
Various convex analysis of mixtures (CAM) based algorithms have been developed to address real world blind source separation (BSS) problems and proven to have good performances in previous papers. This thesis reported the implementation of a comprehensive software CAM-Java, which contains three different CAM based algorithms, CAM compartment modeling (CAM-CM), CAM non-negative independent component analysis (CAM-nICA), and CAM non-negative well-grounded component analysis (CAM-nWCA). The implementation works include: translation of MATLAB coded algorithms to open-sourced R alternatives. As well as building a user friendly graphic user interface (GUI) to integrate three algorithms together, which is accomplished by adopting Java Swing API. In order to combine R and Java coded modules, an open-sourced project RCaller is used to handle the establishment of low level connection between R and Java environment. In addition, specific R scripts and Java classes are also implemented to accomplish the tasks of passing parameters and input data from Java to R, run R scripts in Java environment, read R results back to Java, display R generated figures, and so on. Furthermore, system stream redirection and multi-threads techniques are used to build a simple R messages displaying window in Java built GUI. The final version of the software runs smoothly and stable, and the CAM-CM results on both simulated and real DCE-MRI data are quite close to the original MATLAB version algorithms. The whole GUI based open-sourced software is easy to use, and can be freely distributed among the communities. Technical details in both R and Java modules implementation are also discussed, which presents some good examples of how to develop software with both complicate and up to date algorithms, as well as decent and user friendly GUI in the scientific or engineering research fields. / Master of Science

[en] A CRITIQUE OF TANGIBLE USER INTERFACE DESIGN BASED ON SEMIOTIC ENGINEERING / [pt] UM OLHAR CRÍTICO SOBRE O PROJETO DE INTERFACES TANGÍVEIS BASEADO NA ENGENHARIA SEMIÓTICA

DEBORA MENDONCA CARDADOR CORREA DA COSTA 06 February 2015 (has links)
[en] With the embedding of computing resources into physical elements, computing is moving toward ubiquity (or pervasiveness) and is present throughout the physical environment. Homes, furniture, and everyday life objects are the interfaces with which people now interact. Such new interfaces harbinger a new interaction paradigm that is little known and exploited to date, such as Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) that use physical artefacts for representing and manipulating digital information. Developing TUIs means acknowledging both concrete (form) and abstract (behavior) aspects of an interface. This work proposes a method called Collaborative Tangible Prototyping Based on Semiotics Engineering that combines prototyping and Semiotic Engineering approaches to tangible interfaces design. By combining these approaches, the method brings together the benefits of continued structured experimentation provided by prototyping with the advantages of a focus on communicability from Semiotic Engineering for designing tangibles. A case study is conducted to investigate whether the proposed method contributes to incorporate the Semiotic Engineering perspective in the design of tangible user interfaces.

Martins, Valéria Farinazzo 15 April 2011 (has links)
This work combines knowledge from Computer Science and Health Science in order to propose an evaluation methodology for Automatic Transcription System of Radiology Reports. At first a study regarding a Voice User Interface is presented, this interface identifies the requirements for Spoken Language Dialogue Systems and it can also be used as a tool for an evaluation methodology. Following, a study of automatic transcription systems is presented; in this study the main requirements are listed and classified. Both studies were integrated to allow a new methodology to evaluate an Automatic Transcription System in Radiology. This methodology was previously validated through some inspections and usability tests outside the hospital environment and afterword the methodology was used in a hospital in São Paulo city. As a main result it was proposed a very detailed guide for evaluating the Automatic Transcription Systems Reports in Radiology, increasingly found in hospitals and clinics in this country, apart from reports on experiences gained in applying this methodology in a real case.

“Do you want to take a short survey?” : Evaluating and improving the UX and VUI of a survey skill in the social robot Furhat: a qualitative case study

Bengtsson, Camilla, Englund, Caroline January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative case study is to evaluate an early stage survey skill developed for the social robot Furhat, and look into how the user experience (UX) and voice user interface (VUI) of that skill can be improved. Several qualitative methods have been used: expert evaluations using heuristics for human-robot interaction (HRI), user evaluations including observations and interviews, as well as a quantitative questionnaire (RoSAS – Robot Social Attribution Scale). The empirical findings have been classified into the USUS Evaluation Framework for Human-Robot Interaction. The user evaluations were performed in two modes, one group of informants talked and interacted with Furhat with the support of a graphical user interface (GUI), and the other group without the GUI. A positive user experience was identified in both modes, showing that the informants found interacting with Furhat a fun, engaging and interesting experience. The mode with the supportive GUI could be suitable in noisy environments, and for longer surveys with many response alternatives to choose from, whereas the other mode could work better for less noisy environments and for shorter surveys. General improvements that can contribute to a better user experience in both modes were found; such as having the robot adopt a more human-like character when it comes to the dialogue and the facial expressions and movements, along with addressing a number of technical and usability issues.

Skapandet av en webbaserad informationsplattform : Designprocess från koncept till slutprodukt / The creation of a web based information platform : Design process from concept to final product

Norén, Jonathan January 2012 (has links)
In this essay I will describe the design process during the creation of a web-based information platform, from concept to final product. My assignment has been to take a web agency’s current way of managing and distributing information, which consisted of a mix between digital and analog information, and create a new web-based information platform. The new web-based information-platforms purpose is to gather all information in one place for easier exchange of information between employees at the company and make it more efficient. I used two theoretical frameworks as a theoretical base working on the project; Nielsen's ten heuristics and Krugs visual design hierarchy. I have worked closely with the client to customize the platform to their needs. The result after extensive work with design templates and front-end coding became the foundation for the web agency’s web-based platform, developed to distribute information more efficiently within the agency.
