The search for continuity in the face of change in the Anglican writings of John Henry Newman

Morgan, Stephen January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation provides an analysis of the attempts by John Henry Newman to account for the historical reality of doctrinal change within Christianity in the light of his lasting conviction that the idea of Christianity is fixed by reference to the dogmatic content of the deposit of faith. The existing literature on Newman is enormous and wide-ranging but this present work fills a notable gap by treating Newman at any particular point in the account as a person with an open future, where his present acts are not determined by later events, and where any apologetic intent has to be identified and accounted for by reference to the immediate matter under consideration and the contemporaneous evidence. The argument of the thesis is that Newman proposed a series of hypotheses to account for the apparent contradiction between change and continuity, that this series begins much earlier than is generally recognised and that the final hypothesis he was to propose, contained in An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, (‘Essay’), provided a methodology of lasting theological value. The introduction establishes the centrality of the problem of change and continuity to Newman's theological work as an Anglican, its part in his conversion to Roman Catholicism and its contemporary relevance to Roman Catholic theology. It also surveys the major secondary literature relating to the question, with particular reference to those works published within the last fifty years. In the first main chapter, covering the period to the publication of his first major work, The Arians of the Fourth Century, in 1833, Newman's earliest awareness of the problem and first attempts to solve it are considered. The growing confidence of Newman's Tractarian period and his development of the notion of the Via Media form the second chapter and the collapse of that confidence, the subject matter of the third. The fourth chapter is concerned with the emergence of the theory of development and the writing and content of the Essay. The conclusion considers the legacy of the Essay as a tool in Newman’s theology and in the work of later theologians, finally suggesting that it may offer a useful methodological contribution to the contemporary Roman Catholic debate about hermeneutical approaches to the Second Vatican Council.

Utilizing primary sources, the author demonstrates a change in the paradigm of understanding of Catholic mission, with a historic-sociological reconstruction of the Catholic Church transplantation from the XIX century and the necessary accommodations during the expansionism of the Greater Japanese Empire. He then points out the Japanese episcopacy's participation in the Vatican II Council and highlights their commitment to inculturation issues and the construction of a local Church identity. Finally, he describes the emblematic conflict between the Newcatechumenal Way and the local Episcopal Conference in the past decades. The locus of this study is theoretically in regards to the religious transplantations and cultural transference process and its efforts to achieve an autochthonous identity. On the one hand, by demonstrating the formation of a Japanese identity within Catholicism, the study challenges the general understanding that Christianity continues to be considered as a foreign religion in Japan; on the other hand, it confirms the tendency of the Japanese people in appropriating a religious tradition and innovating it / A pesquisa mostra a construção de uma identidade particular no catolicismo contemporâneo Japonês.

The Trinity and the religions : an assessment of Gavin D'Costa's Trinitarian theology of religions with reference to the patristic Trinitarianism of Basil of Caesarea

Tan, Loe-Joo January 2012 (has links)
As a key contributor to the current discussion of the Catholic theology of religions, Gavin D'Costa's writings represent a consistent attempt to utilize the resources of the doctrine of the Trinity to address a number of issues regarding the theological significance and function of religions in the salvific plan of God. The aim of this thesis is to examine critically his Trinitarian theology of religions through the lens of a main proponent of patristic theology, Basil of Caesarea, and through a historical-systematic study, address the question of whether his underlying Trinitarianism is consonant with classical Trinitarian theology. After a discussion of Vatican II and post-Conciliar sources, the main contours of D'Costa's theology are highlighted through an interpretive grid of particularity/universality (Christology/Pneumatology) with a second-order universality/particularity. Despite his distancing from the three-fold typology of exclusivism-inclusivism-pluralism, we analyzed that much of his theology continues to fall within the category of traditional inclusivism, particularly since his recent proposal of the limbo of the Fathers contained serious difficulties pertaining to his intention to maintain a singular OT Judaism-Christianity relationship. Next, we examined the main features of Basilian Trinitarianism, and proposed that three major themes are of relevance for a comparative analysis with D'Costa's theology, namely, (1) the doctrines of divine simplicity and inseparable operations, (2) the enlightening work of the Spirit, and (3) the theology of baptism and theosis. Throughout the discussion, in recognition that Basil's thought is part of the patristic theological matrix of his time, we will also reference the writings of other Church Fathers, including Gregory of Nyssa, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Augustine. We concluded that while in Basil's theology, economy, relationality and ethics are intricately woven into each other, D'Costa's system, despite its significant merits, was at risk of disaffiliating the connections between the three.

Henri Rollet : historien de l’Action catholique et chrétien engagé / Henri Rollet : historian of the Catholic Action and committed catholic layman

Rollet, Jacques-Hubert 18 February 2016 (has links)
While studying history at the Sorbonne, Henri Rollet (1917-2003) discovered the Church’s social teaching through Emmanuel Chaptal, an auxiliary bishop of Paris. Though he was an industry manager, he nevertheless submitted a doctoral thesis in 1948 on how Catholics had engaged with French society between 1871 and 1901. The following year, he was appointed President of the Secrétariat Social de Paris. Later he would become national President and then international President of Catholic Action for men, a lay auditor at Vatican II, and then president of the Institut Catholique de Paris. During this period he wrote several works on the role of socially engaged Catholics, mostly of a historical kind, as well as many articles; and he gave numerous conferences. It is essentially though press reports and commentaries on his books, articles and talks that one can discover who this committed lay person was: his attitudes, his opinions, the stands he took. How did this committed lay person conceive and carry out his mission in the second half of the 20th century? How did he bear witness to his faith, not only in France but also in other countries? How did he struggle to give the lay person a more significant role within the Church? As will be seen, a number of topics worked through fifty years ago are still all too relevant. Drawing on newly discovered documents, this study attempts to answer these questions, while bringing out the full importance and relevance of Catholic Social Teaching.

[pt] A AÇÃO DO ESPÍRITO EM JESUS CRISTO: UM APROFUNDAMENTO DA RELAÇÃO ENTRE CRISTOLOGIA E PNEUMATOLOGIA NA CRISTOLOGIA PÓS-CONCILIAR / [en] THE ACTION OF THE SPIRIT IN JESUS CHRIST: A DEEPENING OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CHRISTOLOGY AND PNEUMATOLOGY IN THE POST-CONCILIAR CHRISTOLOGY

ANGELA CRISTINA GERMINE PINTO CALDEIRA 31 May 2016 (has links)
[en] In life of Jesus of Nazareth stands out the presence and action of Holy Spirit over his messianic ministry to affirm the centrality of relationship between christology and pneumatology. Jesus Christ is the most important of all reality mystery, revealed in a unique way, unrepeatable and unsurpassed in the Spirit. The path of Spirit in Christ event is the main argument of this thesis. The theological horizon with the human reality are challenges to face today. For this purpose, it was first placed highlighted the relationship between Christ and the Spirit in the NT, in key moments, where is the manifestation of Spirit in the life of Christ in the incarnation, in his baptism and the paschal mystery. In all three events the active presence of Spirit reveals the divine and human constitution of Christ and the universality of salvation. After the biblical witness and post-biblical highlighted the presence of Holy Spirit in the renewed attention of Vatican II in its christological, pneumatological and ecclesiological aspects. The Council represented a renewal of Church, though with limitations and difficulties to articulate its contents. The conciliar texts boosted the post-conciliar theological production valuing the pneumatological Christology, highlighting the works of Yves Congar, Walter Kasper and Marcello Bordoni. The post-conciliar reflection particularly affected theological position in Latin America, so it was important to analyze the Spirit s presence in the Latin American christology. Finally, some points emerge in contemporary times, indicating the need for theological reflection to deepen the pneumatic dimension of Christ s mystery.
