Relationships among metalinguistic awareness, cognitive development, verbal abilities and biliteracy in first grade early French immersion studentsHoskyn, Maureen Janet January 1990 (has links)
The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relation of language and cognitive factors to biliteracy development among EFI first grade children. Variables of interest included phonological awareness, print awareness, level of operativity, English/French verbal ability, and influences in the home environment (e.g. socioeconomic status, parent's level of education, time spent on reading activities).
A battery of language, cognitive and reading tests was administered in Fall and again in Spring of the first grade to sixty-eight preliterate Anglophone children. A parent questionnaire yielded information pertaining to socioeconomic status, and reading related leizure activities in the home. A teacher questionnaire provided details which described the various classroom environments of the children in the study.
Results of correlational analyses indicate that phonological and print awareness both form a significant, positive relationship with French and English reading. Level of operativity and level of English verbal ability did not correlate significant with any measure of reading. The pattern of correlations between French verbal ability tasks and French/English reading was inconsistent. Four of the six French verbal measures correlated significantly, but weakly with French reading and only one measure formed a significant positive correlation with English reading.
Analyses of scatterplots which showed the relation of phonological abilities to
reading suggest that phonological awareness is a necessary, but not sufficient skill for learning to read. Several children who had mastered a French phonological test could not decode French words; however, there were no children who were good readers who did not score above the sample mean on at least one measure of phonological awareness.
Step-wise multiple regression analyses of sample performance on measures of reading and phonological awareness indicate print awareness is the best predictor of reading achievement in French and English. Scores on phonological measures were able to account for residual variance after print awareness had entered the equation.
Limitations and implications of the study are discussed and recommendations for further research are presented. / Arts, Faculty of / Psychology, Department of / Graduate

The relationship between visual and verbal codes of visual rhetoric in a sequential art settingVan der Merwe, Ernest 11 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M. Tech.) - Dept. of Visual Arts and Design, Faculty of Human Sciences - Vaal University of Technology / The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between visual and
verbal codes of visual rhetoric in a sequential art setting. The literature
investigation component of the study covered: (1) the notion of visual literacy;
(2) the principles of visual rhetoric, and (3) trends in sequential art. The
empirical component of the study involved the production of sequential art
test material with an accompanying questionnaire in order to measure the
comprehension of visual rhetoric in a sample of 197 undergraduate students
at the Vaal University of Technology. The working hypotheses that guided
the study were, firstly, that the comprehension of the visual code of the visual
rhetoric used in a sequential art setting differs between (a) study participants
that received visual training prior to the data collection and (b) study
participants that received no visual training prior to the data collection, and secondly, that the comprehension of the visual code of the visual rhetoric
used in a sequential art setting differs between (a) study participants that
received test material in their home language and (b) study participants that
did not receive the test material in their home language. Following a one-way
ANOVA analysis of the questionnaire data, the first hypothesis indicated a
significant statistical difference (p=O.OO) and was not rejected. The second
hypothesis indicated no significant statistical difference (p=0.138) and was
rejected. Based on the result obtained, possibilities for further research were motivated. / Vaal University of Technology

Antecedents and Outcomes of Language Choice in Bilingual Toddlers: A Longitudinal StudyUnknown Date (has links)
Bilingual children sometimes respond to their interlocutors using a different language than the one in which they were addressed. These language choices, their concurrent correlates, and relations to subsequent language growth were examined in 91 Spanish-English bilingual children (44 girls, 47 boys). Children's language choices were assessed at 30 months, and their English and Spanish productive vocabularies and receptive language skills were examined at the ages of 30, 36, and 42 months. Children's language choices were concurrently related to English and Spanish productive and receptive language scores and to mothers' English and Spanish proficiency levels. Longitudinal multi-level modeling analyses indicated that children's language choices at 30 months were uniquely related to language growth on measures of English and Spanish productive vocabulary and Spanish receptive language, when controlling for language expo sure. These findings suggest that language use plays a causal role in language development. The findings of this study have implications for the maintenance of heritage languages in the U.S. and for the development of children's English language skills. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Deafblindness : Theory-of-mind, cognitive functioning and social network in Alström syndromeFrölander, Hans-Erik January 2016 (has links)
This thesis addresses young adults with Alström syndrome (AS). AS causes acquired deafblindness, a severe, progressive, combined auditory and visual impairment affecting daily life and self-reliance to a degree that full participation depends on help from others and society. AS is an autosomal, recessively inherited single-gene disorder that affects the ALMS1 gene. AS has a multi-systemic pathology including a high incidence of additional multiple endocrine abnormalities, cardiomyopathy, pulmonary fibrosis, restrictive lung disease and progressive hepatic and renal failure leading to reduced life expectancy. The focus in the present thesis is on the development of Theory-of-mind (ToM) and on how ToM relates to the development of certain cognitive skills and the characteristics of the individual social network. ToM refers to the ability to understand the thoughts and feelings of others. The results reveal that individuals with AS displayed a significantly higher degree of heterogeneity in the performance of ToM tasks, and some individuals with AS performed on an equal level with nondisabled individuals. ToM performance was predicted by verbal ability and executive functioning (EF), whereas working memory capacity (WM) proved to be an indirect predictor. Later onset of visual loss further characterized AS individuals with better ToM. The sizes of the social networks of individuals with AS were smaller relative to those of nondisabled individuals, and many of the acquaintances were professionals working with individuals with AS. The number of friends correlated with ToM performance. Methods to improve verbal ability and EF, and interventions to enhance social participation in childhood of individuals with AS might prove to be fruitful. In addition assistive technology to establish and maintain friendships in adulthood is required.

An explorative investigation of the quality of items of the performance scales on the translated Sesotho version of the junior South African individual scales JSAIS (giq-8)Mawila, Daphney 25 November 2013 (has links)
M.Ed. (Educational Psychology) / This research inquiry employs the Rasch model of measurement to assess the contemporary quality of the items that constitute an intelligence test developed in South Africa during the 1980s. The Rasch model of measurement will be used as an analytical tool for exploring the quality of items constituting the performance scales of a translated version of the Junior South African Intelligence Scales (JSAIS). The JSAIS was translated into Sesotho and was used to assess grade 1 Sesotho home language learners. This study is part of the Soweto Panel Research Programme (SPRP), which aims to investigate the development of children in a specific Soweto school from preschool (grade R, age 5 and 6) to the end of the Foundation Phase (grade 3). Within this school, the research projects include the assessment of cognitive abilities, numeracy, literacy and the households of the children. I am involved in assessing the cognitive abilities of these children and work in collaboration with three Educational Psychology Master’s students from the University of Johannesburg. The cognitive abilities project aims to assess and track the cognitive development of young children from grade R to grade 3 over a period of four years. Cognitive development focuses on how children learn, process information and attain a veridical view of the world (Gopnik & Meltzoff, 1997), it entails the development of the thinking and organizing systems of the mind, and is composed of language, thinking, reasoning, problem solving, and memory development (Oakley, 2004).

Lexis and the undergraduate : analysing vocabulary needs, proficiencies and problemsCooper, Patricia Anne 01 1900 (has links)
Beginning with Plato's expulsion of the poets in the Republic, this dissertation
'
looks at the often hostile, yet also symbiotic, relationship between·poetry and
philosophy. Aristotle's 'response' to Plato is regarded as a significant origin of
literary theory. Nietzsche's critique of Western philosophy as being an attempt to
suppress its own metaphoricity, leads to a revaluation of truth and consequently
of the privileging of philosophy over poetry. Post-structuralism sometimes
overemphasizes this constitutive force of metaphoricity, at the expense of
conceptual modes. However, Derrida's notion of philosophy as play retains a
balance between concept and metaphor: there is no attempt to transcendentally
ground philosophy, but neither is it reduced to a merely metaphorical discourse.
Finally, Wittgenstein's notion of meaning as determined by use can help us
distinguish pragmatically between poetry and philosophy by looking at the
contexts in which they function. / Linguistics and Modern Languages / M.A. (Linguistics)

Percurso para a elaboração de um teste para avaliação da compreensão em língua italiana de (futuros) professores /Veloso, Fernanda Silva. January 2012 (has links)
; 3) qual a fidedignidade e validade... (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This research, of a hybrid nature, aimed at developing a test of proficiency in listening comprehension (abbreviated as CO) of Italian as a foreing language (abbreviated as LI), the TECOLI. At first, we analyzed the teaching of CO in LI to a group of pre-service teachers, considered as a typical context. The study is justified mainly by the preparation of a test in listening comprehension that provides an instrument for courses to evaluate the linguistic ability of pré-service teachers of Italian as a foreign language. Such test finds no similar tool to evaluate CO among the consolidated tests and proficiency tests of italian as a foreign language created by internationally recognized universities, or well-known tests targeted at helping non-nataive teachers of Italian to evaluate their students. It is known that the evaluation of a foreign language is not widelv addressed by the research dealing with the processes of teaching and learning languages. Even more rare in the field are research studies that focus specifically on the phenomenon of evaluating proficiency in listening comprehension, since knowledge and understanding of this ability remains limited nowadays. Our study also aims at contributing to a larger research project entiled "Proficiency examination for foreing language teachers (abbreviated as EPPLE): definition of tasks and parameters for language assessmentin Brazilian contexts", wich focuses mainly on oral skills of pre-service teachers. The questions that guide this research are: 1) How do we characterize the teaching of CO ina pre-service teacher course that prepares teachers of Italian as a foreign language at a state university in Brazil?; 2) How do the versions of the test created for this study function?; and 3) What is the reliability and validity of the final version of the instrument created?
