Learning Science In A Secondary School In Papua New Guinea

Najike, Samuel Vegola January 2004 (has links)
This study investigated teaching and learning, and the classroom learning environment in which the electricity topic was taught by the regular class teacher within the prescribed Grade 9 syllabus in a Secondary School in Papua New Guinea. The study was motivated by the perceived problems students had with understanding science concepts and the lack of classroom-based studies that provide a better understanding of teaching and learning science and the influence of the classroom learning environment on students' learning. An interpretive with embedded case study was conducted in a Grade 9 class over a period of 12 weeks in which data was gathered using mixed and multiple methods. Findings of the study revealed the presence and influence of aspects of the indigenous traditional teaching and learning approach impacting on the formal modern Western oriented teaching and learning approach in this particular classroom. The study recommended that in order to maximise students' learning and understanding of science concepts in the classroom observed, cultural sensitivity should be incorporated in the pedagogy.

The internationalization process of entrepreneurial SMEs in high technology niche market segments

Cruz-Carreon, Gilbert January 2007 (has links)
This study seeks to make a theoretical contribution to the rapidly growing field of International Entrepreneurship by investigating the process of internationalization of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Bell, McNaughton, Young & Crick, (2003) emphasized the need for researchers to re-conceptualize their thinking on the internationalization process of smaller firms. While there has been substantial research done on the small business internationalization and how the participation of these firms in the global economy has fuelled economic growth in a number of countries (Audretsch & Thurik, 2003; Acs, Randall Morck, Shraver & Yeung, 1997; Storey, 1994; Alam & Pacher, 2003), there is tangible evidence that SMEs in Australia are not keeping up with global trends. Studies conducted on Australian firms allude to the following reasons for their constrained presence in international markets: (i) geographic and psychic distance; (ii) costs disadvantage; (iii) overdependence on inward FDI from large foreign multinationals; (iv) a history of inward-looking and narrowly focussed economic development policies of the Australian government. These factors had the combined effect of imbalanced economic growth which was particularly detrimental to the small business sector (Australian Trade Commission, 2002; Maitland & Nicholas, 2002; Alam & Pacher, 2003). Despite the identified obstacles, some Australian SMEs have succeeded in penetrating international markets. This study involved a preliminary qualitative investigation of selected Australian SMEs and their unique internationalization process. Evidence from the case study based investigation will indicate that the respondent firms have leveraged on entrepreneurial qualities to overcome the obstacles and enhance their success in international markets. As such, the internationalization process for these selected firms is seen as an extension of and integral to their entrepreneurial behaviour. Using the lenses provided by relevant facets of the entrepreneurship, internationalization and strategy scholarly fields, this exploratory qualitative study, while building the foundation for further empirical research into the internationalization process of SMEs, can serve as a guide to researchers for ascertaining future directions in this emergent field. The findings from the study are intended to contribute to a body of knowledge encompassing the cross-border operations of SMEs. The research also has value from a practical perspective as Australian SMEs can draw from this body of knowledge as they pursue opportunities internationally.

Image transition techniques using projective geometry

Wong, Tzu Yen January 2009 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] Image transition effects are commonly used on television and human computer interfaces. The transition between images creates a perception of continuity which has aesthetic value in special effects and practical value in visualisation. The work in this thesis demonstrates that better image transition effects are obtained by incorporating properties of projective geometry into image transition algorithms. Current state-of-the-art techniques can be classified into two main categories namely shape interpolation and warp generation. Many shape interpolation algorithms aim to preserve rigidity but none preserve it with perspective effects. Most warp generation techniques focus on smoothness and lack the rigidity of perspective mapping. The affine transformation, a commonly used mapping between triangular patches, is rigid but not able to model perspective effects. Image transition techniques from the view interpolation community are effective in creating transitions with the correct perspective effect, however, those techniques usually require more feature points and algorithms of higher complexity. The motivation of this thesis is to enable different views of a planar surface to be interpolated with an appropriate perspective effect. The projective geometric relationship which produces the perspective effect can be specified by two quadrilaterals. This problem is equivalent to finding a perspectively appropriate interpolation for projective transformation matrices. I present two algorithms that enable smooth perspective transition between planar surfaces. The algorithms only require four point correspondences on two input images. ...The second algorithm generates transitions between shapes that lie on the same plane which exhibits a strong perspective effect. It recovers the perspective transformation which produces the perspective effect and constrains the transition so that the in-between shapes also lie on the same plane. For general image pairs with multiple quadrilateral patches, I present a novel algorithm that is transitionally symmetrical and exhibits good rigidity. The use of quadrilaterals, rather than triangles, allows an image to be represented by a small number of primitives. This algorithm uses a closed form force equilibrium scheme to correct the misalignment of the multiple transitional quadrilaterals. I also present an application for my quadrilateral interpolation algorithm in Seitz and Dyer's view morphing technique. This application automates and improves the calculation of the reprojection homography in the postwarping stage of their technique. Finally I unify different image transition research areas into a common framework, this enables analysis and comparison of the techniques and the quality of their results. I highlight that quantitative measures can greatly facilitate the comparisons among different techniques and present a quantitative measure based on epipolar geometry. This novel quantitative measure enables the quality of transitions between images of a scene from different viewpoints to be quantified by its estimated camera path.

Street photography in the Google age : written component presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand

Ivory, Andrew John January 2010 (has links)
The role and position of the documentary street photographer is examined in the context of other forms of contemporary visual survey, including Google Street View. The Street View methodology is critically examined and related to the methodologies of other visual artists, including street photographers Peter Black and Robert Frank. Comparisons are drawn between the methodological restrictions imposed by Street View and those imposed by the photographers in the course of their practice. The issue of authorship is discussed and the lack of specific authorship of Street View is related to its inability to augment the viewer's personal sense of space. Wainuiomata, a suburb of Hutt City in Wellington, New Zealand, is introduced as a location for the author's research into how documentary photography might operate. The author's own phenomenological history is considered, and it is proposed that Wainuiomata may act as a mirror which reflects a sense of place derived from personal history, triggered by the visual landscape. The author's installation work The 1 p.m. Project is discussed and contextualised as a response to the author's research findings.

Rule logic and its validation framework of model view definitions for building information modeling

Lee, Yong Cheol 07 January 2016 (has links)
With the growing number of complex requirements for building and facility projects, diverse domain experts iteratively exchange building design and product data during the design, construction, and facility management phases. Such data exchanges, however, frequently involve unintended geometric transformations, inaccurate project requirements, and insufficient syntactic and semantic elements in building model data. To ensure the interoperability of building information models, this dissertation includes an examination of rules categorized from the Precast Concrete Institute model views and a generalization of the rule logic and structures of each rule set. Moreover, rule logic is coded and implemented on modularized validation platforms of a validation tool referred to as the IfcDoc tool, an automated model view documentation and validation application. This dissertation is expected to help domain experts evaluate whether building design data fulfill the data exchange specifications of their domain and the objectives of a proposed project. Furthermore, to identify unreliable and inconsistent IFC mapping procedures of BIM authoring tools, software developers using the proposed approach would implement an automated debugging process in their IFC interfaces according to the specifications of a targeted model view.

"Det handlar väldigt mycket om livet" : En fallstudie om tillämpningen av och elevers möte med livsåskådningsbegreppet i gymnasieskolans religionskunskapsämne / "It's all very much about life itself" : A case study about the application of and student's encounter with the concept »view of life« in the upper secondary school's subject religious education

Paepke, Filip January 2018 (has links)
In the school subject religious education in Sweden, there is a term which easily becomes overlooked, the concept »view of life« (in Swedish: livsåskådning). The concept includes both religious and non-religious world views and is a wider term than religion. Swedish scholars have different approaches to what a view of life can be, which have resulted in a range of interpretations and an uncertainty regarding how teachers should approach the concept in their teaching. In this student thesis I attempt to structure a teaching model, which takes its starting point out of Anders Jeffner’s theories and understanding of the essence of the concept and implement his definition in a teaching situation. The teaching model connects both to the students’ own personal standpoints as well as to more established and collective views of life. This teaching model is being tested and observed as a case study in upper secondary school in order to gather research material and discuss how the students face and understand content and function related to the concept. Furthermore I intend to discuss if Jeffner’s definition is a functioning way to adress views of life in religious education. The result of this thesis is that the students notice a wide range of perspectives of what a view of life can consist of in terms of suppositions and values, as well as its functional effects on an individual and a collective level. However, there is a challenge in translating theoretical concepts and adapting content to a student level.

Conhecidos de vista : a cidade revelada através de olhares, janelas e fotografias

Lampert, Letícia January 2013 (has links)
Known from View is a research in visual poetics that examines an increasingly frequent situation in the contemporary urban context: apartment buildings with opposite windows too close. Neighbors who don’t formally know each other, but inadvertently, follow the one another’s lives. Through the contact with dwellers from forty apartments in Porto Alegre - Brazil, photographs and audio recordings were taken in order to guide the development of this project. In an analysis that takes the creative process as a base point to understand the pathways that lead to the conception of a project in visual arts, earlier projects, where the window appears somehow, are evoked in order to find continuities and operative procedures in my production. The urban landscape, the concept of view, and relationships between public and private spaces are explored in this research.

This dissertation has the goal of approaching the “Reisado do Senhor do Bomfim” under the spectacle’s point of view, this spectacle happens at Piau town, Piranhas municipality, Alagoas. The recognition of two different spectacle conceptions is demanded: one, built by Guy Debord, whose theoretical scheme analyzes the spectacle as a purely merchandising experience, and another one defended by the authors: Patrice Pavis, a playwright who evidences the spectacle as everything offered to our eyes, and Jean-Marie Pradier, an ethnoscenology scholar, a theme within the ethnoscience which has the organized spectacular human behaviors as a target. This is about a reflection on the spectacular dimension of the folk culture, expecting to understand how the spectacles favor the maintenance of the “Reisado do Senhor do Bonfim” and, because of this, besides the theoretical references related to the spectacle, we call on the theoretical outline of Néstor Garcia Canclini, whose statements regarding the hibridation processes were set as a counterpoint regarding what the frankfurtians Adorno and Horkheimer wrote about the culture industry. The analytical process developed on this work allowed reviewing the issues related to tradition, considering the globalization and the opening to new experiences with a possibility to keep the folk artistic practices on happening. The assess of the spectacular regarding the “Reisado Senhor do Bonfim” helped to realize about, how the point of view of someone who doesn’t participate of its social life, that is, the view of a person who is not from Piau, interferes on the group spectacularity, this comprehension was possible, for example, while observing the participation in the Reisado, at the “Romaria de Santa Quitéria”, event that has a car parade going from Piau to Frencheiras town, in the Garanhuns municipality, Pernambuco. The travel gives the chance of having a lecture which points to the relationship between the spectacular and the external view, and even to identity, relationship that can also be drafted in other events lived by the group, which, by the given singularity, are classified as unusual and, exactly because of this, motivate the spectacular. / This dissertation has the goal of approaching the “Reisado do Senhor do Bomfim” under the spectacle’s point of view, this spectacle happens at Piau town, Piranhas municipality, Alagoas.
