Efficient calculation of two-dimensional periodic and waveguide acoustic Green's functions.Horoshenkov, Kirill V., Chandler-Wilde, S.N. 06 July 2009 (has links)
No / New representations and efficient calculation methods are derived for the problem of propagation from an infinite regularly spaced array of coherent line sources above a homogeneous impedance plane, and for the Green's function for sound propagation in the canyon formed by two infinitely high, parallel rigid or sound soft walls and an impedance ground surface. The infinite sum of source contributions is replaced by a finite sum and the remainder is expressed as a Laplace-type integral. A pole subtraction technique is used to remove poles in the integrand which lie near the path of integration, obtaining a smooth integrand, more suitable for numerical integration, and a specific numerical integration method is proposed. Numerical experiments show highly accurate results across the frequency spectrum for a range of ground surface types. It is expected that the methods proposed will prove useful in boundary element modeling of noise propagation in canyon streets and in ducts, and for problems of scattering by periodic surfaces.

The identification and quantification of atoms, molecules, or ions concentrations in gaseous samples are in great demand for medical, environmental, industrial, law enforcement and national security applications. These applications require in situ, high-resolution, non-destructive, sensitive, miniature, inexpensive, rapid detection, remotely accessed, real time and continuously operating chemical sensing devices. The aim of this work is to design a miniature optical sensing device that is capable of detecting and measuring chemical species, compatible with being integrated into a large variety of monitoring systems, and durable enough to be used under extreme conditions.
The miniature optical sensor has been realized by employing technologies from the optical communication industry and spectroscopic methods and techniques. Fused silica capillary tubing along with standard communication optical fibers have been utilized to make miniature gas sensor based on near-infrared spectroscopy for acetylene gas detection.
In this work, the basic principles of infrared spectroscopy are reviewed. Also, the principle of operation, fabrication, testing, and analysis of the proposed sensor are discussed in details. / Master of Science

Integration of Multi-Lithography Technologies for the Fabrication of Flexible Optical LinkMistry, Akash, Nieweglowski, Krzysztof, Bock, Karlheinz 09 August 2024 (has links)
The advancement in demand for high bandwidth energy-efficient communication in the data centre and edge cloud servers needs a viable optical interconnection solution to cope with the demands. Therefore, the presented study describes the concept of flexible multi-mode waveguides (MM-WGs) as an optical link for co-packaged optics. It evaluates three lithography technologies; UV-lithography, 2 photon polymerization direct laser writing process (2PP-DLW), and nano-imprint lithography (NIL) for the fabrication of flexible MM-WGs. The UV-lithography and 2PP-DLW process were evaluated for the fabrication of MM-WGs and micro-mirrors, respectively, for the master pattern of the NIL stamp. The NIL evaluates the imprinting of the MM-WGs with micro-mirrors at either end on the flexible and transparent PEN substrates with a low-loss OrmoClad lower cladding layer. There are five different cross-sections from 10×10 µm 2 to 50×50 µm 2 of MM-WGs with micro-mirrors were imprinted. Additionally, it presents the importance of integrating multi-lithography technologies to fabricate flexible optical links where a 2PP-DLW process shows the best results for printing µm-scale optical components. On the other side, UV-lithography with SU-8 gives the foremost definition of the master for the polymeric MM-WGs. Furthermore, NIL offers the industrial mass-production option alongside prototyping.:Abstract

Modélisation électromagnétique des structures complexes par couplage des méthodes / Electromagnetic analysis of complex waveguide discontinuities using hybrid methodsYahia, Mohamed 09 November 2010 (has links)
Hybridization of numerical methods is one inventive way in the research of the rapidity, the efficiency and the precision of the electromagnetic modeling of complex structures joining straight and large elements with complex and small ones. Instead of a global and unique formulation, we hybridize many numerical methods which are the modal methods, the finite element methods and the artificial neural networks. A novel computer- ided design (CAD) tool of complex passive microwave devices in rectangular waveguide technology is suggested. The multimodal variational method is applied to the full-wave description in the rectangular waveguides while the finite element analysis characterizes waves in the arbitrarily shaped discontinuities. The suggested hybrid approach is successfully applied to the full-wave analysis of complex discontinuities with great practical interest, thus improving CPU time and memory storage against several full-wave finite element method (FEM) based CAD tools. The proposed hybrid CAD tool is successfully extended to the design of filters with cascaded complex discontinuities. The hybridization of modal methods and the artificial neural networks improved the CPU time in the analysis of simple waveguide discontinuities which enhanced the optimization of rectangular ridged waveguide filters.

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is the promising versatile platform proposed for guiding electromagnetic waves at nanoscale dimensions. In this context dynamic control of SPPs prop- agation is of paramount importance. Thermo-optical (TO) effect is considered as an efficient technique for performing active control of plasmonic devices. Among the thermo-optical based plasmonic devices demonstrated so far TO coefficient is dominantly provided by a dielectric material on top of the metal sustaining the SPP mode, however, the role of TO properties of the metal has been rarely investigated for plasmonic applications especially at the telecom frequency ranges. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to investigate in detail the impact of thermo-optical properties of metals onto various SPP modes at telecom wavelengths.First, we report on photo-thermal modulation of thin film SPP mode traveling at gold/air interface excited at telecom wavelengths. We start by investigating the photo-thermally in- duced modulation of SPPs propagation mediated by the temperature dependent ohmic losses in the gold film. Then we extract the thermo-plasmonic coefficient of the SPP mode from the accurately measured SPPs signal depth of modulation by which we could compute the thermo-optical coefficients (TOCs) of gold at telecom wavelength. Lastly, we demonstrate a pulsed photo-thermal excitation of the SPPs in the nanosecond regime.Secondly, we investigate the thermo-optical dynamics of polymer loaded surface plasmon waveguide (PLSPPW) based devices photo-thermally excited in the nanosecond regime. First, we demonstrate thermo-absorption of PLSPPW modes mediated by the temperature-dependent ohmic losses of the metal and the thermally controlled field distribution of the plasmon mode within the metal. Next, we consider the thermo-optical response of a PLSPPW based racetrack shaped resonator coupled to a straight bus waveguide and evaluate the photo-thermal activation through heating and cooling times. We conclude that nanosecond excitation combined to high thermal diffusivity materials opens the way to high speed thermo-optical plasmonic devices. Finally, we report on the photo-thermal modulation of SPPs propagation along litho- graphically fabricated gold nanowires sustaining highly confined plasmonic mode at telecom wavelengths. First, we investigate telecommunication characterization of the nanowires by ap- plying high bit rate signal transmission, 10 Gbit/s, through fiber-to-fiber confocal detection setup. Next, we demonstrate and evaluate the photo-thermal modulation of SPPs propagation along the nanowires where we discuss qualitatively TO effects due to light-induced modula- tions on nanowires and show the impact of the incident beam polarization on the photo-thermal modulation.

Coupled Boussinesq equations and nonlinear waves in layered waveguidesMoore, Kieron R. January 2013 (has links)
There exists substantial applications motivating the study of nonlinear longitudinal wave propagation in layered (or laminated) elastic waveguides, in particular within areas related to non-destructive testing, where there is a demand to understand, reinforce, and improve deformation properties of such structures. It has been shown [76] that long longitudinal waves in such structures can be accurately modelled by coupled regularised Boussinesq (cRB) equations, provided the bonding between layers is sufficiently soft. The work in this thesis firstly examines the initial-value problem (IVP) for the system of cRB equations in [76] on the infinite line, for localised or sufficiently rapidly decaying initial conditions. Using asymptotic multiple-scales expansions, a nonsecular weakly nonlinear solution of the IVP is constructed, up to the accuracy of the problem formulation. The asymptotic theory is supported with numerical simulations of the cRB equations. The weakly nonlinear solution for the equivalent IVP for a single regularised Boussinesq equation is then constructed; constituting an extension of the classical d'Alembert's formula for the leading order wave equation. The initial conditions are also extended to allow one to separately specify an O(1) and O(ε) part. Large classes of solutions are derived and several particular examples are explicitly analysed with numerical simulations. The weakly nonlinear solution is then improved by considering the IVP for a single regularised Boussinesq-type equation, in order to further develop the higher order terms in the solution. More specifically, it enables one to now correctly specify the higher order term's time dependence. Numerical simulations of the IVP are compared with several examples to justify the improvement of the solution. Finally an asymptotic procedure is developed to describe the class of radiating solitary wave solutions which exist as solutions to cRB equations under particular regimes of the parameters. The validity of the analytical solution is examined with numerical simulations of the cRB equations. Numerical simulations throughout this work are derived and implemented via developments of several finite difference schemes and pseudo-spectral methods, explained in detail in the appendices.

Évaluation et contrôle non destructifs des barreaux et plaques par génération acoustique induite par absorption de micro-ondes / Nondestructive evaluation and testing of bars and plates by means of acoustic waves generated by microwaves absorptionMohamed elarif, Abderemane 22 March 2011 (has links)
Many studies in the field of both nondestructive evaluation and testing of mechanical structures have been conducted so far by analyzing the contribution of the microwaves induce acoustic technique. This new non-contact technique can be easily adopted to generate acoustic waves in non-conducting materials. This work begins with studying the lateral vibrations generated within viscoelastic bars hold inside grooved electromagnetic waveguides and subjected to short microwave irradiations. A parametrical model is established in order to predict the shape of the temperature rise within the sample. Results emphasize the fact that these types of waveguides generate a sudden asymmetric temperature rise, which produces some flexural modes. Besides, the development of a 3D numerical model allow the prediction of new vibration modes which are related to the deformations of the bar cross-sections during the sudden thermal heating. Then, direct methods are developed to complete the assessment of the viscoelastic properties of bars placed inside conventional electromagnetic waveguides. Different analytical models are proposed to study the effects of the Poisson ratio either on the ratio between lateral and longitudinal vibrations or on the dispersion of longitudinal waves. An optimization algorithm that allows the Poisson ratio and the real part of the complex slowness evaluation by means of dispersion curves is elaborate before being applied in the specific case of two polymeric bars. Finally, analytical and numerical finite element methods are conducted to analyze the acoustic waves generated by a circular defect (hole) contained in a plate and heated locally by microwaves. Two acoustic approaches are performed to predict the temperature rise form. Furthermore, a nondestructive testing method is highlighted by a direct relationship between the size of the defect and the frequencies of some peaks that appear on the velocity spectra of the plate. This method could be applied to set up an inverse procedure that can be used to size these kinds of defects.

Titanium Dioxide Based Microtubular Cavities for On-Chip IntegrationMadani, Abbas 03 March 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Following the intensive development of isolated (i.e., not coupled with on-chip waveguide) vertically rolled-up microtube ring resonators (VRU-MRRs) for both active and passive applications, a variety of microtube-based devices has been realized. These include microcavity lasers, optical sensors, directional couplers, and active elements in lab-on-a-chip devices. To provide more advanced and complex functionality, the focus of tubular geometry research is now shifting toward (i) refined vertical light transfer in 3D stacks of multiple photonic layers and (ii) to make microfluidic cooling system in the integrated optoelectronic system.
Based on this motivation, this PhD research is devoted to the demonstration and the implementation of monolithic integration of VRU-MRRs with photonic waveguides for 3D photonic integration and their optofluidic applications. Prior to integration, high-quality isolated VRU-MRRs on the flat Si substrate are firstly fabricated by the controlled release of differentially strained titanium-dioxide (TiO2) bilayered nanomembranes. The fabricated microtubes support resonance modes for both telecom and visible photonics. The outcome of the isolated VRU-MRRs is a record high Q (≈3.8×10^3) in the telecom wavelength range with optimum tapered optical fiber resonator interaction. To further study the optical modes in the visible and near infrared spectral range, μPL spectroscopy is performed on the isolated VRU-MRRs, which are activated by entrapping various sizes of luminescent nanoparticles (NPs) within the windings of rolled-up nanomembranes based on a flexible, robust and economical method. Moreover, it is realized for the first time, in addition to serving as light sources that NPs-aggregated in isolated VRU-MRRs can produce an optical potential well that can be used to trap optical resonant modes.
After achieving all the required parameters for creating a high-quality TiO2 VRU-MRR, the monolithic integration of VRU-MRRs with Si nanophotonic waveguides is experimentally demonstrated, exhibiting a significant step toward 3D photonic integration. The on-chip integration is realized by rolling up 2D pre-strained TiO2 nanomembranes into 3D VRU-MRRs on a microchip which seamlessly expanded over several integrated waveguides. In this intriguing vertical transmission configuration, resonant filtering of optical signals at telecom wavelengths is demonstrated based on ultra-smooth and subwavelength thick-walled VRU-MRRs.
Finally, to illustrate the usefulness of the fully integrated VRU-MRRs with photonic waveguides, optofluidic functionalities of the integrated system is investigated. In this work, two methods are performed to explore optofluidic applications of the integrated system. First, the hollow core of an integrated VRU-MRR is uniquely filled with a liquid solution (purified water) by setting one end of the VRU-MRRs in contact with a droplet placed onto the photonic chip via a glass capillary. Second, the outside of an integrated VRU-MRR is fully covered with a big droplet of liquid. Both techniques lead to a significant shift in the WGMs (Δλ≈46 nm). A maximum sensitivity of 140 nm/refractive index unit, is achieved.
The achievements of this PhD research open up fascinating opportunities for the realization of massively parallel optofluidic microsystems with more functionality and flexibility for analysis of biomaterials in lab-on-a-tube systems on single chips. It also demonstrates 3D photonic integration in which optical interconnects between multiple photonic layers are required.

This work deals with a study of application of the Boundary Element Method (BEM) directed to electromagnetic guided wave propagation. This method relies on an integral formulation that does not need any domain integration. Only boundary integrations have to be performed. The work begins with a study of the theoretical foundations of the method, presenting its general formulation and then directing it to Helmholtzs equation solution. Developed computational procedures allow efficient application of the method to real problems with more than one medium, with or without losses. Simulations results are presented which confirm the applicability of the method and allow the analysis of its performance through parameters variation as, for example, the number of discretized elements and interpolation function.
