Older white people's experiences of giving care to or receiving care from their children / Sonia S. Howes

Howes, Sonia S January 2013 (has links)
Social and demographic changes have a tremendous effect on the care for older people to the effect that caring for older people might have become a rare commodity. Increased life expectancy during the past century has prolonged the period in which older people need care and has made family care giving an increasingly recurrent activity for adult children. After the demolition of the apartheid area in South Africa, most research focused on previously disadvantaged groups, namely Black and Brown people which resulted in a research gap regarding older White people. Little is known about older White people’s experiences of care in South Africa, as older White people are viewed as the minority group who were not previously disadvantaged. However, older White people’s vulnerability is increasing because poverty is currently escalating amongst older White South African people as a result of early retirement and retrenchment because of employment equity and the conversion goal of Black Economic Empowerment. The aim of this study was to explore older White people’s experiences of giving care to and receiving care from their children. A qualitative research approach with an explorative and descriptive nature was utilized for this study as the research question was aimed at understanding a subjective phenomenon. This research design allows the participants to give meaning to their own experiences. A case study design was followed during this research study in order to provide an in-depth description of older White people’s experience of care. The specific population for this study consisted of all White people older than 60 years, co-residing with their adult children and living in the Midvaal area of the Vaal Triangle, Gauteng. Data were collected through journaling and semi-structured interviews, with 10 older White people. Interviews were conducted on a one-on-one basis at the office of the researcher or at the houses of the participants. This ensured the preservation of the participants’ relationship with their children. The interviews were audio recorded and transcribed. Data were reduced through thematic data analysis and emerging themes and categories were identified. The principles and strategies for enhancing the trustworthiness of the data were done through crystallization and neutrality. The results indicated that older White people’s experience of care can be summarized by means of physical, emotional and financial care. Most of the participants in this study were still physically independent from their children and they could attend to their own physical care. Emotional care was identified by the participants as the ultimate indicator of caring and this component contributed profoundly to their psychological well-being. The financial care component highlighted that older White people’s vulnerability is increasing and that poverty is more prevalent in older White people than what is reflected in current research. / MA (Psychology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Medical Apparatuses above Humanity: A Study of Mary Chase’s Harvey and Margaret Edson’s Wit

Su, Ciao Yi Unknown Date (has links)
In the madicalized society, the doctor-patient relationship is a significant issue because medical science has had tremendous breakthroughs in the twentieth century, yet the quality of hospital care has become worse. Doctors, over-relying on science and rationality, lose respect for their patients, which leads to a situation of medical apparatuses above humanity. Mary Chase’s Harvey and Margaret Edson’s Wit describe patients’ experience in hospital respectively. Through the comparison and contrast of the plays, this thesis cannot see any improvement in doctors’ treatment of patients. Therefore, aiming at demonstrating the dehumanizing evil of medical apparatuses, this thesis elaborates the construction of medical authority from the perspective of Foucault’s analysis of disciplinary power and reflects on the deprival of patients’ autonomy with the approach of biomedical ethics. This thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter One introduces the backgrounds of the authors, literature review of Harvey and Wit and the theoretical frameworks of Foucault and biomedical ethics. Chapter Two, focusing on the rigid disciplinary power of medical apparatuses, illustrates hospital staff’s evil practice on patients. Chapter Three demonstrates the dehumanized patients under the manipulation of medical discipline and unethical treatment. Chapter Four concludes hospital staff’s manipulation of patients and patients’ dilemmas in medical institution and then reiterates the significance of the patient-centered treatment.

Estrada Luttikhuizen, David 17 December 2008 (has links)
Humour helps us to understand and organise the world. It is an aspect in the formation of cultural identities which develops as soon as children can follow an oral narrative, and is further intensified as reading becomes a habit. Written humour displays expressive resources and semantic fields determined by the language, and contents and referents determined by social values; its code includes conventions with the reader regarding form and plot. Being a social strategy, humour evolves through time depending on the circumstances. This research focuses on literature for children and adolescents originally written in the Catalan language and published between 1904 and 2004.

On the serious social implications of humorous art

Van Tonder, Anna Magrieta 31 January 2007 (has links)
Modern humour appears to initiate the deconstruction of modern correspondence thinking. A close examination shows the opposite, namely that modern humour forms part of correspondence thought in a complicated reciprocal relationship of disruption and support. Ironically, humour is particularly suited to explicating the deconstruction of correspondence thinking in poststructuralist language theories by being prone to refute cornerstone principles of modernism such as truth, rationality, reliability and permanence. This dissertation focuses on the exceptional suitability of humour to adapt to the loss of the centre and to demonstrate the shift from the modernist ontological approach to the postmodernist creative metaphorical approach to art. Humour, like metaphor, reinvents meaning rather than discovers it; it remains open-ended instead of offering closure. It becomes a valid creative option and enters a new dynamic into a postmodern culture of play where truth and meaning remain infinitely suspended in an ungrounded state of possibility. / Art History, Visual Arts and Music / M.A. (Visual Arts)

"Qua comando mi" : a estereotipação do colono italiano no universo de Radicci, do cartunista Iotti / a estereotipação do colono italiano no universo de Radicci, do cartunista Iotti

Menegotto, Roberto Rossi 22 August 2017 (has links)
Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2017-10-02T16:53:53Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Roberto Rossi Menegotto.pdf: 22481208 bytes, checksum: 081182e493b4ac14b9c420263bd096a2 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2017-10-02T16:53:53Z (GMT). The analysis starts with the selection of three categories in the comics series: character development, description of spaces in which the narrative takes place, and the identity conflict existing among characters. For this purpose, connections are established with the historical, social, and cultural context of the Italian Colonization Region in Rio Grande do Sul, in order to verify how the stereotyping of the Italian immigrant cultural features happens. The theoretical basis is multidisciplinary, including: Literary Studies, History, Sociology, Social Communication and Visual Arts. From the results, one can consider that stereotyping historical data can (re)create identities while preserving and providing new meanings for cultural habits and manners.

Entre a épica e a paródia = a (des) mistificação do gaucho nos quadrinhos de Inodoro Pereyra, el renegau / Between the epic and the parody : the (de) mystification of the gaucho in the comics of Inodoro Pereyra, el renegau

This research analyzes the representations of the gaucho in the comics of Inodoro Pereyra, a character created by the Argentine comedian Roberto Fontanarrosa, in the 70s of the twentieth century. Born as a parody of Gauchesca literature, of radiotheater and of Argentine folklore, the renegau's trajectory retakes the sarmientina metaphor of civilization and barbarism, which crosses not only the History of this country, but also inscribes itself in all Latin America's political tradition. In this sense, through the comic of this gaucho, it is possible to rediscuss important issues that have marked the history of the Argentine Republic such as the oppositions between pampa and coast, unitary and federal, nationalism and cosmopolitanism, which composes the image of a divided nation. Moreover, the epopee experienced by the character allows us to resize the theme "two Argentinas". Considering that, this comic is transfixed by images related to the social imagination of this nation / Mestrado / Politica, Memoria e Cidade / Mestre em História

Grobler, Daniel Christiaan 19 May 2014 (has links)
Ph.D. / A central tradition within the art of novel-writing is that of realism. Reality cannot be duplicated, and the illusion of reality in literature depends on narrative conventions. Within the perspective of the age-old tradition of realism one would have to view the bent and the emphasis of modern prose in the light of what has been described as "realism with documentary woof", "faction" , and "the new realism". The link with the reality of the day is often such that one cannot merely talk about "illusion of reality" - it pertinently becomes "illusion of actuality". The "political" noveI that wants to play in upon an actual situation, brings about an important change in the character of the literary work: the fictional is subdued, so to speak. In this study the question concerning the relation between work of art and actuality strikingly comes to the fore as a problem. The author increasingly addresses himself to the portrayal of the actual. Two methods of portrayal are identified: i) the actuality situation is fictionalised and ii ) a semblance of authenticity is given to the fictitious situation. In this thesis the different strategies employed in each of the two methods of portrayal of actuality are examined. The concepts "actuality", "illusion", and "involvement" are demarcated. Then note is taken of portrayal of actuality in older Afrikaans prose, before proceeding to an analysis of the different strategies employed in three "exemplary" works: Die swerfjare van Poppie Nongena (Elsa Joubert), 'n Droë wit seisoen (André P. Brink), and Dagboek van 'n verraaier (J.C. Steyn). The conclusion eventually drawn, is that novels with a fictitious world as a point of departure, have potentially richer literary posibilities than novels in which the actual situation serves as a point of departure. However, notwithstanding the fact that Dagboek van 'n verraaier has the fictional situation as point of departure, it does not succeed novel-wise. Despite the relatively weaker technique being used in Die swerfjare van Poppie Nongena, the novel is a success. The respective success or failure of these works is determined by the extent to which the concrete author manages to make full-fledged, blood-warm human beings of his characters. 'n Droë wit seisoen serves as an illustration of what· can be achieved when the fictitious world is used as point of departure and the characters are rendered true to life. The latter is, novelwise, the greatest success of the three. Contributing to this, in particular, are narrator's perspective, colloquial usage and tonality, the convincing manipulation of documentation, period location and characterization.
