Weak Boson Production in High Energy Colliders as a Probe of Nucleon Structure

Nam, Jae, 0000-0003-1893-5237 January 2021 (has links)
Presented in this thesis are measurements of W boson production in high energy pp collisions and ep deep inelastic scattering that take place at RHIC and HERA facilities, respectively. These measurements explore the inner structure of the nucleons, in particular, probing the distributions of the light flavor sea which consists of up, down and strange quarks. The W+/W− cross-section ratio, RW , in pp collisions is sensitive to the asymmetry in the ¯d and ¯u flavors in the nucleon sea. This ratio was first measured with the STAR detector at RHIC with the data collected in 2009 and again with the data collected from 2011 to 2013, featuring pp collisions of a center-of-mass energy of √s = 500/510 GeV and an integrated luminosity of ∼ 350 pb−1. The study considered in this thesis further improves the precision of this measurement by analyzing an additional data set collected in 2017 which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of ∼ 350 pb−1. The experimental results are compared to theory predictions generated with various global PDF fits. The measurement performed at HERA searches for the strange quark content in the nucleon via charm production in charged current deep inelastic scattering. This is the first measurement of its kind, using the HERA II data collected with the ZEUS detector. This data set corresponds to e±p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 318 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 358 pb−1. The results are consistent with expectations from the Standard Model, albeit with large experimental uncertainties arising from the limited statistics. / Physics

Determination of the Weak Charge of the Proton Through Parity Violating Asymmetry Measurements in the Elastic EP Scattering

Subedi, Adesh 13 December 2014 (has links)
The Qweak experiment has taken data to make a 2.5 percent measurement of parity violating elastic ep asymmetry in the four momentum transfer region of 0.0250 (GeV/c)2. This asymmetry is proportional to the weak charge of the proton, which is related to the weak mixing angle, sin2(thetaW). The final Qweak measurement will provide the most precise measurement of the weak mixing angle below the Z° pole to test the Standard Model prediction. A description of the experimental apparatus is provided in this dissertation. The experiment was carried out using a longitudinally polarized electron beam of up to 180 microampere on a 34.5 cm long unpolarized liquid hydrogen target. The Qweak target is not only the world’s highest cryogenic target ever built for a parity experiment but also is the least noisy target. This dissertation provides a detailed description of this target and presents a thorough analysis of the target performance. Statistical analysis of Run 1 data, collected between Feb - May 2011, is done to extract a blinded parity violating asymmetry of size--299.7 +/- 13.4 (stat.) +/- 17.2 (syst.) +/- 68 (blinding) parts-per-billion. This resulted in a preliminary proton’s weak charge of value 0.0865 +/- 0.0085, a 9% measurement. Based on this blinded asymmetry, the weak mixing angle was determined to be sin2(thetaW) = 0.23429 +/- 0.00211.

A PAM Decomposition of Weak CPM

Wardle, Mason B. 27 June 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The Enhanced Flight Termination System uses weak CPM as its modulation scheme and a limiter-discriminator as its demodulation scheme. A PAM representation of weak CPM was developed which representation provided the necessary componenents to build a simplified PAM-based receiver that outperformed the EFTS limiter-discriminator, even in the presence of phase noise. The PAM representation also provided a new perspective into the negative characteristics of weak CPM.

Mentorskap och "the Strength of Weak Ties" - En fallstudie i hur mentorskap under utbildningen påverkar socionomstudenters sociala nätverk

Wallström, Sofie, Zarrabi, Nathalie January 2010 (has links)

An analytic representation of weak mutually unbiased bases

Olupitan, Tominiyi E. January 2016 (has links)
Quantum systems in the d-dimensional Hilbert space are considered. The mutually unbiased bases is a deep problem in this area. The problem of finding all mutually unbiased bases for higher (non-prime) dimension is still open. We derive an alternate approach to mutually unbiased bases by studying a weaker concept which we call weak mutually unbiased bases. We then compare three rather different structures. The first is weak mutually unbiased bases, for which the absolute value of the overlap of any two vectors in two different bases is 1/√k (where k∣d) or 0. The second is maximal lines through the origin in the Z(d) × Z(d) phase space. The third is an analytic representation in the complex plane based on Theta functions, and their zeros. The analytic representation of the weak mutually unbiased bases is defined with the zeros examined. It is shown that there is a correspondence (triality) that links strongly these three apparently different structures. We give an explicit breakdown of this triality.

Weak functional inequalities in the setting of discrete graphs

Popert, Aldo 04 March 2024 (has links)
Abstract: This thesis explores the application of isoperimetric functions to gain weak functional inequalities involving Dirichlet forms. The connection between such weak functional inequalities and bounds on the convergence speed of the corresponding Markov semi-group is established. Three examples of discrete graphs and the corresponding Dirichlet forms are discussed.
