The Left Hand Slowly Beckons

In my Bachelor’s project I have attempted to explore and develop my relationship with the amorphous concept that is ”style”. As an illustrator I am sometimes torn between the idea of having a single recognizable style or to be experimental and to use aesthetics as a tool rather than a signifier of a personal brand.  The project takes the form of an anthology of weird fiction stories, where each of the eight stories are illustrated in different ways and with different materials. I have choses weird fiction as a subject not only because of personal interest but also because of the specific qualities of the genre. Weird fiction deals in uncertainties and mood, with a huge emphasis on how things are told, not what is told. In this project I have attempted to transfer some of these qualities to my illustration practice. Letting the contents of the image take the backseat to how it is drawn. Both as a method for producing the anthology but also to develop as an illustrator overall.

O horror sobrenatural de H. P. Lovecraft : teoria e praxe estética do horror cósmico

H.P. Lovecraft, em seus ensaios e cartas, nos oferece uma reflexão riquíssima sobre a narrativa de horror e como esta deve se expressar na literatura. O autor cunhou o termo Horror Cósmico para denominar sua teoria estética. Porém, mais do que ser uma teorização sobre o horror na literatura, o Horror Cósmico é uma teorização sobre como deve ser a narrativa que Lovecraft julga ser a ideal para as histórias que deseja contar. Nessa perspectiva, a análise de sua ficção, acompanhado dos conhecimentos adquiridos pela análise pormenorizada de seus ensaios e cartas sobre o tema, permitem ao leitor compreender melhor sua obra, chegando assim a uma interpretação aproximadamente correta de sua ficção. O objetivo deste trabalho, portanto, é compreender como suas teorizações se refletem em seus textos ficcionais. Os contos e respectivas transposições fílmicas selecionadas foram analisados sobre o prisma destas teorizações. Para alcançarmos esse objetivo primeiro analisamos os seus contos comparativamente com os textos não ficcionais, a fim de compreendermos a forma como o autor expressa o conceito de Horror Cósmico em sua prosa ficcional. Após a compreensão dos elementos teóricos de Lovecraft em sua ficção, analisamos as transposições fílmicas selecionadas sob esse mesmo prisma. Pesquisas bibliográficas foram realizadas com o objetivo de construir um referencial teórico para a abordagem proposta. / H.P. Lovecraft, in his essays and letters, offers the reader powerful insights into the subject of horror and how it should be expressed in literature. The author coined the term Cosmic Fear to name his aesthetic theory. However, in addition to being a theory about horror in literature, Cosmic Fear is a theory about how the ideal horror story (as Lovecraft wishes to write it) should be. From this perspective, the analysis of Lovecraft´s fiction, accompanied by the knowledge acquired through a detailed analysis of his essays and letters on the subject, allows the reader to better understand his work, thus reaching an approximately correct interpretation of his fiction. The goal of our research, therefore, is to understand how Lovecraft´s aesthetic theory works in his fiction. The short stories, novels and the filmic transpositions we selected for this research were analyzed under the prism of these theories. To achieve this goal we analyzed his fiction by comparing it first to his non-fiction in order to understand the concept of Cosmic Fear in his fiction. After understanding Cosmic Fear in Lovecraft´s fiction, we analyzed the selected filmic transpositions under the same prism. Bibliographic references were used with the purpose of building a theoretical framework for the proposed approach.

S'inspirant de l'inconscient collectif jungien, « détaché des sphères personnelles, exist[e] en marge de celles-ci, [...] possède un caractère tout à fait général et [...] ses contenus peuvent se rencontrer chez tous les êtres1 », le concept de la psychosphère, tel que présenté dans la télésérie américaine True Detective (HBO, 2014), en est la trame de fond narrative. Décrire l'invisible et l'intangible n'est possible que par l'étude de ses manifestations. Ce mémoire s'intéresse donc aux phénomènes et aux concepts qui rendent possible la représentation de ce que Ralph Noyes décrit comme un « vast and complex cauldron of ideas, memories, volitions, desires and all the other furniture of conscious experience and unconscious mental functioning2 ». Outre les questions plus larges de la généalogie du récit, la poétique narrative de la psychosphère relève essentiellement de l'archive: True Detective fait maintes allusions à la fiction gothique américaine. Celles-ci désignent à leur tour une explication transhistorique d'un retour à la violence ritualisée. Toutefois, cette explication, s'il en est une, demeure fragmentée, incohérente et ultimement différée. / Inspired by Jung's collective unconscious, the concept of a psychosphere, as seen in HBO's hit series True Detective (2014), underlines the narrative structure of the show. Describing the invisible and the intangible is only made possible by the study of its manifestations. This thesis analyses the phenomena and concept which enable the representation of what Ralph Noyes describes as a « vast and complex cauldron of ideas, memories, volitions, desires and all the other furniture of conscious experience and unconscious mental functioning3 ». Apart from broader questions of genealogy, the narrative poetics of the psychosphere are essentially archival: True Detective contains many allusions to previous Gothic fictions, which point toward an trans-historical explanation for the return of ritualized violence. However, any such explanation is fragmented, incoherent, and ultimately deferred.
