Evaluation of an employee assistance programme of Sasol Nitro, EkandustriaMonyakeni, Mhlokonya Stuurman 18 January 2012 (has links)
The research was conducted to evaluate the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) of Sasol Nitro, Ekandustria. The researcher used questionnaires to collect information from the managers, supervisors, and employees. The information collected from all respondents indicated that the structure responsible for evaluating the EAP is not representative. The information also indicated that the EAP is appropriate and a better option to assist the employees with addressing their problems which impact on their job performance negatively. The employees are informed about the programme, while managers and supervisors are skilled on EAP procedures. The programme was utilized by the employees and this improved their job performance. The model adopted is rated poor by employees in terms of confidentiality and accessibility. Finally, it is concluded that the EAP is utilized and, therefore, the programme improved the employees’ job performance at Sasol. / Dissertation (MSW)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Social Work and Criminology / unrestricted

Talent retention among trainers and learners in a mining environment / Nyaradzo ChidyamakonoChidyamakono, Nyaradzo January 2010 (has links)
Global growth in mining activities has resulted in stiff competition for talented employees and characterised the mining industry with high turnover rates. The South African mining environment has not been an exception to this phenomenon. The aim of this study was to inform the design of talent retention strategies through determination of turnover intention predictors and exploration of the turnover process experienced by employees. The study hypothesised that job satisfaction and affective organisational commitment mediate the effect of overall justice, centralisation, trust and job challenge on turnover intentions. A cross-sectional survey design with a random sample of trainers and learners from a South African gold mining company was used (n=171 and n=230, respectively). Results indicate that job satisfaction mediates the effect of centralisation on turnover intention for learners. Only job satisfaction directly predicts turnover intention for trainers, and overall justice and trust play a direct role in the prediction of turnover intention for learners. It was also found that job challenge predicts job satisfaction for trainers, whilst job challenge, centralisation and trust predict job satisfaction for learners. Therefore, to retain trainers, the mining company should focus on enhancing those factors that facilitate job challenge perceptions and job satisfaction. In retaining learners, its thrust should be increasing job challenge, decentralisation, overall justice, trust and job satisfaction. / Thesis (M.A. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

Critical analysis of the taxation of South African employees working abroadVan Wyk, Talita Cornelia 09 March 2012 (has links)
Companies trading in international markets and assigning their employees to these global positions has become a daily occurrence, also in the lives of many South Africans. The taxation planning around these assignments can become a complex matter which can either be beneficial to the employee or result in surprising tax liability. Although many articles have been written on the taxation effect on South African employees working abroad, little research has been performed combining not only the South African legislation, but also taking the effect of double taxation agreements and the legislation of other countries into consideration. This study extends on these prior articles by analysing the taxation of an individual from a South African perspective in combination with double taxation agreements and legislation of the United States of America, Australia and Saudi Arabia. The aim of this study is to create a structure for planning an employee’s taxation liability when sent on a secondment assignment and to provide all the relevant aspects that should be taken into consideration to determine the employee’s final tax liability. This study discusses the South African legislation relevant to employment income, determining the employee’s resident status, the relevant double taxation agreements articles and three countries: USA, Australia and Saudi Arabia, double taxation agreements and legislation on non-residents. The study concludes by summarising the taxation effect on a South African employee working in one of these countries. Copyright 2011, University of Pretoria.
ENGLISH : On the one hand this study determines whether there are specific stressors present, which lead to higher stress levels and contribute to the accompanying negative quality of worklife perspective of employees at the relevant tertiary institution (QWL). On the other hand the focus is on the effectiveness of the current Stress Management Programme (SMP), in order to determine whether participation in this specific programme contributes to a better and more positive experience of the employee's QWL. This study provides extensive theoretic perspectives on the quality of work, stress, wellbeing and interventions in the workplace. From the literature review in Chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5, it is clear that change in the work environment, and the subsequent stress it imposes, impacts on the employee's experience of quality of worklife and wellbeing and the employee's reaction to both these is the decisive factor in reaching health and wellbeing in the workplace. Employers have the responsibility to establish a healthy workplace by utilising intervention programmes in order to enable employees to accept ownership of their lives in reaching optimum health and wellbeing. The literature review is followed by an empirical investigation during which evaluative research was utilised. The quantitative-qualitative research approaches, with focus on Creswell's ‘dominant-less-dominant’ model was used where the quantitative phases were used as the dominant paradigm. The quantitative descriptive design's random cross section is utilized to investigate the nature, extent and impact of stress on the QWL of employees at the relevant tertiary education institution. The adapted ‘ASSET’ mailed questionnaire was provided to respondents from two chosen faculties and respondents who participated in the SMP. The quasiexperimental research design's one-group pre-test / post-test design and hand-delivered questionnaires served as the second quantitative phase of this study. During the qualitative third phase, the case study, with focus on a collective case study as research strategy, was followed during which semi-structured interviews with an interview schedule were used to obtain additional information. The experiences and needs of respondents, who completed the SMP training, were determined in order to take into account these experiences and needs when the SMP is adapted. The structured questionnaires, as well as the semi-structured interviews were used as pre-test and post-test to determine the effectiveness and the utilization value of the current SMP. The choice of the different approaches, strategy and design which were followed during the research process, were relevant and successful in order to address the formulated problem, to provide a sensible answer to the research question, and to confirm the hypothesis. The researcher could therefore succeed to, by using methodological triangulation, combine the quantitative-qualitative approaches, during which multiple methods were applied to explore and compare all possible aspects of the same phenomenon and to subsequently verify the validity thereof. Based on findings, the following conclusion can be made: firstly, there are stressors present at the relevant tertiary education institution; secondly, stress has a substantial impact on the QWL of employees; and the current Stress Management Programme contributes to an improved QWL of employees. / Thesis (DPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Social Work and Criminology / unrestricted

Botes, Anri January 2013 (has links)
The use of temporary employment services as a means to achieve flexibility in die labour market led to various complications due to a lack of proper regulation. The atypical formation of the triangular employment relationship, limited rights and less favourable employment conditions of the temporary employees, multiple authority figures and their liabilities under various circumstances and the impact thereof on such employee’ collective bargaining rights caused legal uncertainty in the absence of sufficient legislation to govern it. Temporary employment agencies developed certain methods in order to evade the restrictive labour legislation and employer duties imposed on them, namely by making use of automatic termination clauses (resolutive conditions) and by categorising the temporary employee as an independent contractor. Last mentioned would effectively exclude the temporary employee from labour legislation and the protection it provides.
In reaction to abovementioned problems, trade unions have been objecting to the use of temporary employment agencies and went as far as demanding the total ban thereof. This raised the question in the South African Government whether said agencies should indeed be banned. The other option is a less restrictive approach and entails the attempt to regulate these agencies by amending the current labour legislation in order to accommodate temporary employment services. In light of the fact that various proposals to amend the current South African labour legislation (especially with regard to temporary employment services) have been published in the Government Gazette, it can be deduced that the social partners ultimately chose to regulate temporary employment agencies rather than ban them altogether.
From an early stage the International Labour Organisation (ILO) provided rules and regulations for the management of employment agencies in general by way of conventions and recommendations. In 1997, in order to give effect to the labour standards identified by it, the ILO brought the Private Employment Agencies Convention into existence. This document could be applied to all temporary employment agencies on an international level. This document provides for administrative regulations, the duties of the agency and the client as well as the rights of the temporary employees concerned. The ILO recommends that all of its member states incorporate the principles contained within this document in their own legislation.
Temporary employment services are also used in other legal systems. For purposes of this study, the English law (United Kingdom (UK)) and the Namibian law will be scrutinised. Similar issues to those recognised in the South African law have been identified in these countries. However, each has approached said problems in different ways. The Namibian Government banned the conducting and provision of these services by way of legislation in 2007. The constitutionality of the ban has however been questioned by the Supreme Court of Namibia, after which it had been found to infringe upon the fundamental freedom to carry on any business, trade or occupation. The ban was struck down as unconstitutional. The Namibian Government has since promulgated new legislation in which it removed the ban and replaced it with numerous amendments providing for the regulation of temporary employment services.
Since 1973 the UK has been promulgating various instruments for the thorough regulation of temporary employment agencies. These instruments provide for the management of temporary employment agencies and the rights of the employees involved. The relevant legislative instruments have been updated regularly with the purpose of ensuring that the needs of all the parties concerned are met. The UK, as a member state of the European Union (EU), (which has also been providing for the regulation of temporary employment services in various directives), promulgated legislation specifically with the aim to give effect to the principles in the mentioned directives. By way of doctrines and the creation of a third category ―worker‖ the UK has been attempting to prevent any loopholes in their legal system with regard to temporary employment services and the rights of the employees involved.
The aim of this study is to investigate all the important complications experienced with temporary employment agencies in order to indicate the impact the atypical circumstances have on the rights of the temporary employees. The degree to which, if at all, the South African law complies with the preferred labour standards identified by the ILO will be pointed out. A comparative study will be conducted, first by ascertaining in detail how the comparable issues in the UK and Namibian law are dealt with, and second by identifying which aspects in these legal systems could be of value to the South African law. Finally the potential effectiveness of the proposed amendments to the South African labour legislation will be analysed, during which recommendations for the unresolved issues will be provided. The recommendations are mainly aimed at achieving sufficient rights and legal certainty for the temporary employees associated with temporary employment agencies. / Thesis (PhD (Law))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

Developing authenticity: a framework to enhance women's well-being in a male-dominated work environmentJacobs, Rochelle Dorothy 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Abstracts in English, isiXhosa and Afrikaaans / This study’s primary objective was to create a framework for developing authenticity,
by exploring women’s experiences of authenticity and how these relate to their wellbeing
in a male-dominated work environment. Twelve purposively chosen women
participated in the study, comprising six police officers and six traffic officers from
the Western Cape province in South Africa. Data were gathered through narrative
interviews by using open-ended questions, and analysed by applying thematic
analysis. The research findings revealed that challenges or stressors in their law
enforcement environment serve as potential agents for moving the self away from
best-self in the authenticity dynamic, resulting in the need for coping and therefore
for developing authenticity.
The framework for developing authenticity was constructed as an ongoing and
unfolding process comprising the following: experiencing challenges or stressors;
turning within; recognising possible ways of being; managing perceptions, thoughts,
emotions and behaviour; making conscious choices and taking responsible actions;
as well as evaluating responses and consequences against best-self standards.
During this process various best-self characteristics and associated skills are
developed and employed, but also serve as best-self standards against which to
evaluate growth and transformation. Secondary objectives aimed to advance the
concept of authenticity in the study of well-being as a discipline of psychology. It also aimed to make a methodological contribution by applying hermeneutic
phenomenological and transpersonal approaches in a novel way. / Eyona njongo yesisifundo ibikukuphuhlisa umgaqo nkqubo wokwenene, oqwalasela

ontvouende proses wat die volgende insluit: ervaring van uitdagings of stressors;
Psychology / Ph. D. (Psychology)
