In a complex perspective (LARSEN-FREEMAN and CAMERON, 2008; ELLIS and LARSEN-FREEMAN, 2009) and perceiving a group in a virtual learning environment (VLE) as a Complex Adaptive System (CAS), Vetromille-castro (2007, 2011) presented the role of the teacher as a disturber one, which can provide favorable conditions for interaction and, therefore, for the maintenance of a system, when taking into account concepts such as dynamic/systemic balance and edge of chaos. In this work, we study an autonomous and collaborative English learning group in WhatsApp application and question how it is constituted and remains cohesive without course and lesson plans and without a teacher as a disturber as well as what elements could be pointed out as affordances of the interaction. The study is guided by an ecological view (KRAMSCH, 2002, 2008; KRAMSCH and STEFFENSEN, 2008; TUDOR, 2003; VAN LIER 1988, 1996, 2002, 2004, 2007), which suggests that the use of technologies should not be seen as an end in itself, but as a tool that allows a broader and more complex understanding of the learning process, especially language learning. It also perceives language learning as a contextualized activity, marked by multimodal and multisensory experiences, fostered through the emergence of affordances. The methodology adopted is ethnography for the Internet, according to Hine (2000, 2005, 2008 and 2015) as well as Fragoso, Recuero and Amaral (2009); Amaral (2009) and Poliavnov (2013). Based on data analysis, it was noticed that the group remained active and cohesive through the engagement among its members, either by system order disturbance performed by some participants and/or by collaboration and, from this, by the systemic emergence of affordances, especially linguistic ones. The autonomy in an ecological perspective was also fundamental for the cohesion of this space. In addition, WhatsApp has also proved to be a conducive space for new online learning practices, especially for its fluid multimodality.

The theoretical foundation was based on Simmel, L??vy and Castells, among others. The data was collected by means of questioners and implementation of two focal groups and the material was given a qualitative treatment by means of the Bardin's Content Analysis Technique. As the main results, the fluent appropriation of the WhatsApp app in their daily routine, mostly in a modest to intense way, stands out. However, the app is still not primarily used in their interactions with their social groups, prevailing, still, the face-to-face interactions. The online and offline communication are interchanged. They are motivated to use it by the need of immediate and ubiquitous communication, which the app makes available in an easy and simple way, allowing continuous connectivity, intrinsic to contemporary times. Also, as motivation, they receive influence from friends and colleagues, from the capitalist market and from the families' financial condition. As opportunities for their sociabilities, they pointed out the maintenance and intensification of their relationships, sociality and enlargement of their contact network. In relation to the challenges, they indicated the communication conflicts, digital privacy and the sporadic showing of psychic and physical symptoms. The consequences regarding their sociabilities transpired in dualistic manner as bonds and awkwardness, chiefly in their basic social circles. In the friend circle, the bonds arise from the intensity and warmth with which they interact. The awkwardness, among others, from the fear of exclusion from the group, conflicts and the matter of privacy. In the family circle, seeking security, they contact their parents through WhatsApp, keeping the primary bonds. The restriction to the use of the app, the absence of familiar talking groups or in an unpleasant participation generate the awkwardness. On the social school circle, given opportunity by the resources made available by the app, they become collaborative in sharing the school tasks, registering the subjects needed to be studied and participating in groups of student interest. The awkwardness arise from the restraint of the use inside classroom and from the pretentious neutrality of the school regarding the prevention of cyberbullying. The conclusions are preliminary, induced by the literature review and the interpretation reported by the researched. In face of this, we understand that the communication technology advances that are happening in the 21st century requires of the academic knowledge new researches seeking to analyse the possible consequences in the experience of the teenagers.

Social networking among UWC students: instant messaging genres and registers

Dalwai, Nausheena Begum January 2015 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / Contemporary research has pointed to the importance of social media in the lives of young people today. This project aims to explore the emerging discourse conventions and generic structures of chat conversations on social networking media applications such as MXit, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and WhatsApp. The data for this project was acquired from undergraduate students between first- and third-year of study at the University of the Western Cape across four years (2010-2012 and 2014). The data is of three types: instant messaging chats which were collected from 2010 to 2012, and questionnaires and a focus group interview which were conducted in 2014. The main theoretical frameworks used for this project are genre and register theory by Martin and Rose (2003), Eggins and Slade (1997), Chandler (1997), Eggins (2004), Halliday and Hasan (1985). Bock (2013) and Spilioti (2011) were also used for the chat analyses. In this project I argue that although generic structures in instant messaging (IM) are conventionalised they still show a great amount of hybridity and fluidity. One of the main findings illustrates how different participants choose to begin and end their chats, whether it is with or without a greeting, and although they may be flouting the conventions of IM chatting they are not necessarily considered to be impolite. Furthermore, the findings of this project explores how the evolution and advancement of technology has contributed to the style of chatting as well as the norms of instant messaging as a genre.

Utilising m-learning for enhancing student participation at a South African university of technology

Bere, Aaron January 2013 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / Previous studies on the academic utilisation of mobile devices in South Africa have rendered some invaluable insights into the rationale and different ways students utilise mobile technologies in and outside the classroom. However, these studies have addressed issues about social practices of adoption in high schools that emphasise tutor-directed, instant messagingmediated supply of supplementary tuition/training in subjects like science and mathematics. Consequently, insufficient attention has been devoted to understanding the dynamic complexities of implementing mobile learning (m-Learning) projects in tertiary institutions. This research contributes to the m-Learning discourse by exploring a collaborative m-Learning perspective, through the pedagogical application of WhatsApp, a special-purpose instant messaging service implemented at a University of Technology in South Africa. This research paper argues that mobile instant messaging (MIM) may create alternative academic discussion platforms for the students’ collaborative interactions outside the classroom, which implies the transformation of pedagogical delivery. The FRAME model was utilised as the theoretical lens for this study. An interview instrument was developed based on the FRAME model constructs. Face-to-face semistructured interviews were conducted with twenty participants. The findings suggest improved academic participation, the promotion of collaborative m-Learning for critical thinking, knowledge creation and sharing, as well as fostering effective learning through student-centered approach hence liberal transformation in the lecturer’s mode of instructional delivery.

Catto, Karina Martins January 2020 (has links)
Abstract: In an increasingly connected world, the use of applications and social networks on television and especially on television news has become a very common practice among Brazilian broadcasters. Therefore, this research aims to understand the phenomenon of the current society in which viewers have been using the Whatsapp application as a way to participate in the TV news of free-to-air broadcasters, in special "Balanço Geral" of Record TV Paulista broadcaster. The case study has guided us to try to understand through a theoretical repertoire how communication within television journalism has been altered with the use of the attraction Flagrou Tá na Record (Freely translated as: “Caught red-handed by Record”), in which viewers send their contributions to the broadcaster. This research had as methodology a bibliographic survey, case study, application of a questionnaire, interview, and finally a data analysis. The present study analyzed the videos of the newsletter "Balanço Geral" between June 1st and August 31st, 2018 and what can be seen is that the picture is most often used by the population to make complaints about their cities and neighborhoods. However, for television journalism to continue to play a relevant role in our society, it is necessary to deepen the debate so that the use of these participation tools contributes significantly to the construction of a journalism that will be relevant and transformative for our society. / Mestre

Silva Fiestas, Jorge Enrique January 2023 (has links)

Imamovic, Delila January 2022 (has links)
