Robust Noise Filtering techniques for improving the Quality of SODISM images using Imaging and Machine LearningAlgamudi, Abdulrazag A.M. January 2020 (has links)
Life on Earth is strongly related to the Sun, which makes it a vital star to
study and understand. To improve our knowledge of the way the Sun works,
many satellites have been launched into space to monitor the Sun‟s activities
where the one of main focus is the effect of these activities on the Earth‟s
climate; PICARD is one such satellite. Due to the noise associated with
SODISM images, the clarity of these images and the appearance of solar
features are affected. Image denoising and enhancement are the main
techniques to improve the visual appearance of SODISM images.
Affective de-noising algorithm methods depend on a proper detecting of
noise present in the image. The aim is to identify which type of noise is
present in the image. To reach this point, supervised machine-learning (ML) classifier is used to classify the type of noise present in the image.
Furthermore, this work introduces a novel technique developed to enhance
the quality of SODISM images. In this thesis, the Modified Undecimated Discrete Wavelet Transform (M-UDWT) technique is used to de-noise and
enhance the quality of SODISM images. The proposed method is robust and
effectively improves the quality of SODISM images, and produces more
precise information and clear feature are brought out. In addition, the non wavelet enhancement is developed as well in this thesis. The results of this
algorithm is discussed. The new methods are also assessed using two
different methods: subjective (by human observation) and objective (by
calculation)

Link Stability Analysis of Wireless Sensor Networks Over the Ocean SurfaceShahanaghi, Alireza 03 September 2021 (has links)
Ocean-surface Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are essential in various thalassic applications,
such as maritime communication, ocean monitoring, seawater examination, pollution
detection, etc. Formed by simple structured sensor nodes, ocean-surface WSN can improve
the data transmission rate, enhance the monitoring resolution, expand the geographical
coverage, extend the observation period, and lower the cost compared to the vessel-based
monitoring approaches. Despite the importance and the broad applications of ocean-surface
WSNs, little is known about the stability of the wireless links among the sensors. Especially,
research suffers from the lack of an accurate model that describes the environmnetal
effects, including the ocean surface movements and the wind speed on the link stability. The
inappropriate understanding of link stability can result in network protocols that are not
robust to environmental interruptions. Such a shortcoming decreases the network reliability
and degrades the accuracy of the network planning. To compensate for this shortcoming, in
this dissertation, we provide a thorough analysis on the stability of the wireless links over
the ocean. In particular, we investigate and capture the effects of ocean waves on the link
stability through the following steps. First, we use the linear wave theory and obtain a novel
stochastic model of Line-of-Sight (LoS) links over the ocean based on the realistic behavior
of ocean waves. Second, we present and prove an important theorem on the level-crossing
of Wide Sense Stationary (WSS) random processes, and combine that with our stochastic
model of LoS links to study two important indicators of link stability, i.e., the blockage probability
and the blockage and connectivity periods. The former indicates the probability that
a LoS link is blocked by the ocean waves while the latter determines the duration of on/off
periods of the LoS links over the ocean. The aforementioned stability parameters directly
affect different stages of network design, such as choosing the antenna height, planning the
sensors' deployment distances, determining the packet length, designing the retransmission
and scheduling strategies in the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols and transport
layer protocols, selecting the fragmentation threshold in Internet Protocol (IP), etc., which
will be discussed in the respective chapters. In the last part of our dissertation, we investigate
the problem of linear prediction of ocean waves, which has special importance in the
design of ocean-surface WSNs. In this regard, we first introduce a low-complexity metric
for effectiveness of k-step-ahead linear prediction, which we refer to as efficiency curve. The
significance of efficiency curve becomes evident when we decide upon the number of previous
samples in the linear prediction model, and determine the extent to which the predictor
forecasts the future. After efficiency curve, we formulate an adaptive Wiener filter to predict
the ocean waves and adapt the prediction model according to the environmental changes. / Doctor of Philosophy / Covering almost three quarters of the earth and supplying half of its oxygen, oceans are
vital to the support of life on our planet. It is important to continuously monitor different
parts of the ocean environment for tracking climate changes, detecting pollution, etc. However,
the existing monitoring approaches have serious weaknesses, which prevent us from
constantly monitoring the state of ocean, and drastically limit the geographical coverage.
For instance, the traditional ocean monitoring system using oceanographic research vessels
is time-consuming and expensive. Besides, it has low resolution in time and space, which
poses serious challenges to oceanographers by providing under-sampled records of the ocean.
To compensate for these defects, one of the promising alternatives is to employ Wireless
Sensor Networks (WSN) which has many advantages, such as real-time access to data for
a longer period of time and a larger geographical coverage of the ocean, higher resolution
of monitoring, faster processing of collected data and instantaneous transmission to onshore
monitoring centers. With the benefit of simple structure sensor nodes, ocean-surface WSNs
can also decrease the cost by at least one order of magnitude compared to the conventional
approaches. Despite the advantages that ocean surface WSN have over traditional ocean
monitoring methods, ocean surface WSN research suffers from the lack of an accurate model
that describes the stability of wireless links among sensor nodes. While some of the existing
literature has developed accurate models of the electromagnetic wave propagation over the
ocean surface, they have failed to consider the environmental effects, such as ocean waves on
the stability of the links. To fill this void, in this dissertation, we investigate ocean surface
waves' effects on the Line-of-Sight (LoS) link between the sensors in an ocean-surface WSN.
Specifically, we derive the blockage probability, and the blockage and connectivity periods of
LoS links between a transmitter and receiver pair due to wave movements. In addition to the
link stability analysis, we dedicate the last part of this dissertation to look into the problem
of linear prediction of ocean waves, which has special importance in the design process of
ocean-surface WSNs. In this regard, we present a low-complexity metric for effectiveness of
k-step-ahead linear prediction, and formulate an adaptive Wiener filter to predict the ocean
waves and adapt the prediction model according to the environmental changes.

Autocorrélation et stationnarité dans le processus autorégressif / Autocorrelation and stationarity in the autoregressive processProïa, Frédéric 04 November 2013 (has links)
This thesis is devoted to the study of some asymptotic properties of the $p-$th order \textit{autoregressive process}. The latter usually designates a random sequence $(Y_{n})$ defined on $\dN$ or $\dZ$ and completely described by a linear combination of its $p$ last values and a white noise $(\veps_{n})$. All through this manuscript, one is concerned with two main issues related to the study of such processes: \textit{serial correlation} and \textit{stationarity}. We intend, by way of introduction, to give a necessary overview of the usual properties of the autoregressive process. The two following chapters are dedicated to inferential consequences coming from the presence of a significative autoregression in the disturbance $(\veps_{n})$ for $p=1$ on the one hand, and then for any $p$, in the stable framework. These results enable us to give a new light on some statistical procedures such as the \textit{Durbin-Watson test} and the \textit{H-test}. In this autocorrelated noise framework, we complete the study by a set of moderate deviation principles on our estimates. Then, we tackle a continuous-time equivalent of the autoregressive process. The latter is described by a stochastic differential equation and its solution is the well-known \textit{Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process}. In the case where the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is itself driven by an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, one deals with the serial correlation issue for the continuous-time process. Hence, we infer some statistical properties of such models, keeping the parallel with the discrete-time framework studied in the previous chapters as an objective. Finally, the last chapter is entirely devoted to the stationarity issue. We consider the general autoregressive process with a polynomial trend of order $r$ driven by a random walk of order $d$. The convergence results in the unstable framework generalize the \textit{Leybourne and McCabe test} and some angles of the \textit{KPSS test}. Many graphs obtained by simulations come to strengthen the results established all along the study.

The settlement of investment disputes within the ICSID system is carried out by the ICSID arbitral tribunals which are non-permanent judicial bodies. Every separate case is adjudicated by a different tribunal. The ICSID system, however, does not provide for any institutions similar to the EC Advocate Generals, the EC preliminary rulings, the WTO Appellate Body or to the appeal-like process of the referral to the Grand Chamber of the ECHR capable of securing the homogenous development of the case-law. Moreover, the possibility of appeal of an arbitral award is explicitly excluded within the ICSID system. The present thesis examines the homogeneity of the ICSID jurisprudence in order to ascertain whether the case-law of the separate and not standing ICSID panels proves to be so inconsistent that the ICSID system is in need of reform. The study of the homogeneity of the ICSID jurisprudence concerns the interpretation of identical and similar provisions laid down in international investment treaties as well as of the ICSID Convention itself by the ICSID panels. In particular, it deals with the following topics: (a) Definition of the term “investment” pursuant to the ICSID Convention. (b) Extension of the scope of application of the most-favoured-nation clause to procedural provisions. (c) Jurisdiction of ICSID tribunals over mere violations of an investment contract through broad dispute settlement clauses and umbrella clauses. (d) Standard of compensation for expropriation and distinction between indirect expropriation and state regulation. (e) State of necessity under customary and investment treaty law. This study comes to the conclusion that the ICSID jurisprudence suffers from heterogeneity. Thus, the lack of mechanisms able to secure the consistency of the ICSID case-law constitutes a serious institutional deficit. It is, therefore, urgent to reform the ICSID system immediately, preferably by way of establishing an ICSID appellate authority.

Surface Characterization using Radiometric and Fourier Optical MethodsHansson, Peter January 2003 (has links)
This thesis treats static and dynamic surface characterization using radiometric and Fourier optical methods. A Fourier optical method has been developed for real time image processing in paper production and printing applications. It has been shown that the method can be used to measure crepe frequency, an important parameter in tissue paper production, as well as to monitor the wire mark pattern at paper web velocities of up to 20 m/s. The wire mark pattern has been used to measure dimensional variations across a paper web. These are important for the mechanical properties of paper. Imaging of the moving surfaces onto a spatial light modulator, necessary for Fourier optical analysis of opaque objects, constitutes a motion blur problem. This problem has been solved by means of optical motion compensation using a rotating mirror. A rotating mirror system has also been developed for the inspection of small particles fixed to a rotating sample disc. The optical motion compensation configurations have made exposure times of more than two orders of magnitude longer than the exposure time without compensation possible. A light scattering model for opaque objects, for example coated paper, has also been developed and verified, with a coefficient of determination between theory and measurement ranging from r2=0.84 to r2=0.98, on various paper samples. The light scattering model has been used in the development of an instrument based on the photometric stereo principle. In this instrument the reflectance (or color) and topography of opaque samples are determined from two or more images of the sample illuminated from different directions. The method has been successfully used for studies of the relation between topography and print results in gravure and flexographic printing. Comparisons of surface height profiles measured with the photometric stereo method and profiles obtained with mechanical and optical scanning stylus instruments have shown coefficients of determination of up to r2=0.97. The main advantages of the method are the high speed, the scalability and the ability to obtain reflectance and surface height maps of a surface simultaneously.
