The Pioneering Efforts of Ellen Larsen: The First Female Sports Information Director at Brigham Young University

Schlenker, Kiana 12 June 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Title IX began the change of integrating women's sports into universities, but it was up to each university's athletic administration, external media sources, and public relations practitioners to determine how female athletes and sports were supported and publicized. In 1976, Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah hired Ellen Larsen as its first female sports information director responsible for women's sports. Through her 19 years as a sports information director at BYU, Larsen was an advocate for her athletes and helped pave the way for future female athletic administration roles. While there is plenty of literature on male sports information directors, literature on female sports information directors is thin. Even less has been published on pioneer women in this role. This paper will tell the story of Ellen Larsen, BYU's first female sports information director, and describe her pioneering impact in the publicizing of women's athletics at BYU from 1976 to 1995.

Underrepresentation of women in management of sports: implications for women's participation in rugby sports in Polokwane Municipality of Limpopo Province

Shongwe, Thabiso Mapreme January 2023 (has links)
Thesis (MBA.) -- University of Limpopo, 2023 / The underrepresentation of women in management positions of rugby is a continued unresolved phenomenon not only in South Africa, but across the globe. It has been thirty years since the Brighton Declaration was adopted, which was attended 289 international states. The Brighton Declaration Conference seeks to promote the interest of women in sport; the conference in line with Sustainable Developmental Goals (also called “SDG. World Rugby has over 15 working committees that constitute less than 5 women serving as members in committees. South African Rugby Union (SARU), a custodian for rugby in South Africa, lacks women representation in senior management positions. Thus, a research conducted in women rugby in Polokwane Municipality. The aim of the research is to investigate the underrepresentation of women in management of sport and the implications for women ‘s participation in rugby sport in Polokwane Municipality, Limpopo Province. The research uses qualitative approach, and 20 participants were purposively sampled to respond to interview questions. The research findings revealed SARU’s inadequacy in developing women for management of rugby. Thus, the research recommends women empowerment through various sustainable development programs accustomed to equip women to occupy management and leadership roles. Furthermore, policy review on sport management should be considered, the review brings together women coaches, technical staff and other team officiating from various stakeholders of sports and rugby in particular. SARU has to review their inclusion policies, and implement them. World Rugby’s inclusion policies must also be implemented because in many cases inclusion policies only exist on paper.

Sports Fans Newsstand : Illustrated Stories of Title IX and the Fight for Gender Equality in Sports

Baker, Lindsay January 2024 (has links)
My Masters project is a visual exploration of otherwise unrecorded girls' and women's sports stories from the pre-Title IX era. Title IX is an American piece of legislation that was signed into law in 1972. It states that any institution receiving federal funding cannot discriminate based on sex. This law would help to expand girls’ and women’s opportunities and participation in sports, although gender equality in American school athletics has yet to be achieved. The visual outcome of my project took the form of the Sports Fans Newsstand which housed a variety of ephemera such as comics, newspapers, sports trading cards, posters and pins--each element adding a new entry point to these complex stories.

Män på botten = män på toppen? : En studie om rekryteringsprocesser till styrelseuppdrag i en mansdominerad idrottsvärld / Men on the bottom equals men on the top? : A study about recruitment processes to board commissions in a male dominated sporting world

Rehn, Inez January 2017 (has links)
The Swedish sport movement is based on an idea that everyone is welcome to join and should be able to contribute and effect on those decisions that affects themselves. Although, recent studies show that a large percent of all power positions in the Swedish world of sports is held by men. The purpose of this study is to investigate the road to a board commission in one of Sweden’s most established sports where a large amount of the practitioners are men. The Swedish federation of Motorbike- and Snowmobile has 81 percent men as their practitioners and 89 percent men of their board members are male. Through interviews with people in the election committee in all six districts of the federation, this study shows the processes and the criterial that is behind a nomination to the districtal board. Overall, the participations show that most of the work behind a recruitment is based on small and internal networks. Not rarely a person that has a finished career of his own is chosen to be the best suited for the job. Strong criterias for a suitable board member is also having knowledge about the sport and to have a lot of time on their hands for the job. The main conclusion of this study is that it’s not that woman are not wanted as board members, but the processes and social constructions about who’s suitable for this kind of job is making it so much harder for a woman to get it. There will always be men on the top of the pyramid in sports if we don’t change the way we recruit people and challenge our mindsets on how a suitable candidate for board membership looks like.

Obraz Gabriely Koukalové v tištěných médiích v období leden 2017 - červen 2019 / Portrayal of Gabriela Koukalová in the press from January 2017 to June 2019

Sedláčková, Adéla January 2021 (has links)
This thesis deals with the analysis of Gabriela Koukalová's media portrayal in selected print media in the period January 2017 - June 2019. This period was determined due to changes in Gabriela Koukalová's professional focus, as early 2017 she was a successful biathlete who has many victories from international competitions. She stopped racing in autumn of 2017 and due to the controversial biography she published in 2018, she announced retirement from her biathlon career in 2019. The aim is to find out whether the media image of Gabriela Koukalová at a time when she was a top biathlete differs from the media image that she had when she stopped competing. The theoretical part presents the role of the media in society and the theoretical definition of the construction of the media image. This section also includes mediasport, and media portrayal of biathlon and women in sports. The methodological part of the work describes the chosen analysis methods and the process of data recording. The analytical part of the work is devoted to the interpretation of the obtained results.
